Proximity-induced superconductivity in a ferromagnet can induce Cooper pairs with a finite center-of-mass momentum. The resultant spatially modulated superconducting order parameter is able to stabilize Josephson junctions (JJs) with pi phase difference in superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures and realize 'quiet' phase qubits. The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) layered superconducting and magnetic materials promises a new platform for realizing pi JJs with atomically sharp interfaces by van der Waals stacking. Here we demonstrate a thickness-driven 0-pi transition in JJs made of NbSe2 (an Ising superconductor) with a Cr2Ge2Te6 (a ferromagnetic semiconductor) weak link. By systematically varying the Cr2Ge2Te6 thickness, we observe a vanishing supercurrent at a critical thickness around 8 nm, followed by a re-entrant supercurrent upon further increase in thickness. Near the critical thickness, we further observe unusual supercurrent interference patterns with vanishing critical current around zero in-plane magnetic field. They signify the formation of 0-pi JJs (with both 0 and pi regions) likely induced by the nanoscale magnetic domains in Cr2Ge2Te6. Our work highlights the potential of van der Waals superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures for the explorations of unconventional superconductivity and superconducting electronics.
Non-reciprocal electronic transport in a spatially homogeneous system arises from the simultaneous breaking of inversion and time-reversal symmetries. Superconducting and Josephson diodes, a key ingredient for future non-dissipative quantum devices, have recently been realized. Only a few examples of a vertical superconducting diode effect have been reported and its mechanism, especially whether intrinsic or extrinsic, remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a substantial supercurrent non-reciprocity in a van der Waals vertical Josephson junction formed with a Td-WTe2 barrier and NbSe2 electrodes…
Stacking two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials rotated with respect to each other show versatility for the study of exotic quantum phenomena. Especially, anisotropic layered materials have great potential for such twistronics applications, providing high tunability. Here, we report anisotropic superconducting order parameters in twisted Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) vdW junctions with an atomically clean vdW interface, achieved using the microcleave-and-stack technique. The vdW Josephson junctions with twist angles of 0° and 90° showed the maximum Josephson coupling, which was comparable t…
When two superconductors are connected across a ferromagnet, the spin configuration of the transferred Cooper pairs can be modulated due to magnetic exchange interaction. The resulting supercurrent can reverse its sign across the Josephson junction (JJ) [1-4]. Here we demonstrate Josephson phase modulation in van der Waals heterostructures when Cooper pairs from superconducting NbSe$_2$ tunnel through atomically thin magnetic insulator (MI) Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. Employing a superconducting quantum interference device based on MI JJs, we probe a doubly degenerate non-trivial JJ phase ($ϕ$) origin…
Superconductor-ferromagnet (S-F) interfaces in two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures present a unique opportunity to study the interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism. The realization of such nanoscale heterostructures in van der Waals (vdW) crystals remains largely unexplored due to the challenge of making an atomically-sharp interface from their layered structures. Here, we build a vdW ferromagnetic Josephson junction (JJ) by inserting a few-layer ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6 into two layers of superconductor NbSe2. Owing to the remanent magnetic moment of the barrier, th…
Van der Waals (vdW) Josephson junctions can possibly accelerate the development of advanced superconducting device that utilizes the unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductors such as spin-orbit coupling, spin-valley locking. Here, we fabricate vertically stacked NbS$_{2}$/NbS$_{2}$ Josephson junctions using a modified all-dry transfer technique and characterize the device performance via systematic low-temperature transport measurements. The experimental results show that the superconducting transition temperature of the NbS$_{2}$/NbS$_{2}$…

We investigate a Josephson junction in an electron-hole superfluid in a double layer TMD heterostructure. Observation of a critical tunneling current is a clear signature of superfluidity. In addition, we find the BCS-BEC crossover physics in the narrow barrier region controls the critical current across the entire system. The corresponding critical velocity, which is measurable in this system, has a maximum when the excitations pass from bosonic to fermionic. Remarkably, this occurs for the density at the boundary of the BEC to BCS-BEC crossover regime determined from the condensate fraction.…
Modern Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) are commonly fabricated from either Al or Nb electrodes, with an in-situ oxidation process to create a weak link between them. However, common problems of such planar nano- and micro-SQUIDs are hysteretic current-voltage curves, and a shallow flux modulation depth. Here, we demonstrate the formation of both Josephson junctions and SQUIDs using a dry transfer technique to stack and deterministically misalign flakes of NbSe$_{2}$; allowing one to overcome these issues. The Josephson dynamics of the resulting twisted NbSe$_{2}$-NbSe$_{2…

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide superconductors have unique and desirable properties for integration with conventional superconducting circuits. However, fully superconducting contact must be made between the 2D material and three-dimensional (3D) superconductors in order to employ the standard microwave drive and readout of qubits in such circuits. Here, we present a method for creating zero-resistance contacts between 2D NbSe$_2$ and 3D aluminum that behave as Josephson junctions (JJs) with large effective areas compared to 3D-3D JJs. We present a model for the supercurr…
Three-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT) is regarded as a candidate for the magnetic topological nodal line semimetal. We investigate lateral electron transport between two 3~$μ$m spaced superconducting In leads beneath a thick three-dimensional FGT exfoliated flake. At low 30~mK temperature, we observe Josephson supercurrent that exhibits unusual critical current $I_c$ suppression by the magnetic field $B$. The overall $I_c(B)$ pattern is asymmetric in respect to the B sign. We demonstrate, that the asymmetry is defined by the magnetic field sweep direction, so the $I_…
Highly transparent superconducting contacts to a topological insulator (TI) remain a persistent challenge on the route to engineer topological superconductivity. Recently, the higher-order TI WTe$_2$ was shown to turn superconducting when placed on palladium (Pd) bottom contacts, demonstrating a promising material system in pursuing this goal. Here, we report the diffusion of Pd into WTe$_2$ and the formation of superconducting PdTe$_x$ as the origin of observed superconductivity. We find an atomically sharp interface in vertical direction to the van der Waals layers between the diffusion crys…
Twisted interfaces between stacked van der Waals cuprate crystals enable tunable Josephson coupling between in-plane anisotropic superconducting order parameters. Employing a novel cryogenic assembly technique, we fabricate Josephson junctions with an atomically sharp twisted interface between Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x crystals. The Josephson critical current density sensitively depends on the twist angle, reaching the maximum value comparable to that of the intrinsic junctions at small twisting angles, and is suppressed by almost 2 orders of magnitude yet remains finite close to 45 degree twist angle. …
High-temperature cuprate superconductors-based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures hold high technological promise. One of the obstacles hindering progress is the detrimental effect of disorder on the properties of Josephson junctions (JJ) realized by the vdW devices. Here we report the new method of fabricating twisted vdW heterostructures made of Bi2Sr2CuCa2O8+d, crucially improving the JJ characteristics, pushing them up to those of the intrinsic JJs in bulk samples. The method combines a cryogenic stacking using a solvent-free stencil mask technique and covering interface by the insulatin…
Thin transition metal dichalcogenides sustain superconductivity at large in-plane magnetic fields due to Ising spin-orbit protection, which locks their spins in an out-of-plane orientation. Here we use thin NbSe$_2$ as superconducting electrodes laterally coupled to graphene, making a planar, all van der Waals two-dimensional Josephson junction (2DJJ). We map out the behavior of these novel devices with respect to temperature, gate voltage, and both out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic fields. Notably, the 2DJJs sustain supercurrent up to $H_\parallel$ as high as 8.5 T, where the Zeeman energy $…
A magnetic field is generally considered to be incompatible with superconductivity as it tends to spin-polarize electrons and breaks apart the opposite-spin singlet superconducting Cooper pairs. Here, an experimental phenomenon is observed that an intriguing reemergent superconductivity evolves from a conventional superconductivity undergoing a hump-like intermediate phase with a finite electric resistance in the van der Waals heterointerface of layered NbSe2 and CrCl3 flakes. This phenomenon merely occurred when the applied magnetic field is parallel to the sample plane and perpendicular to t…
Thin-film-like high temperature superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x single crystals (TSB) with a typical thickness of 20-200 nm is produced by mechanical exfoliation. The TSB, which shows excellent superconductivity, can adhere firmly to the substrate by van der Waals force. The TSB may find important applications in fabricating high temperature superconducting devices. Intrinsic Josephson junctions made of the TSB are demonstrated. A very interesting finding is that the TSB can follow exactly the topology of the substrate, making it possible to fabricate superconducting devices with artificial st…
Van der Waals heterostructures have risen as a tunable platform to combine different electronic orders, due to the flexibility in stacking different materials with competing symmetry broken states. Among them, van der Waals ferromagnets such as CrI3 and superconductors as NbSe2 provide a natural platform to engineer novel phenomena at ferromagnet-superconductor interfaces. In particular, NbSe2 is well known for hosting strong spin-orbit coupling effects that influence the properties of the superconducting state. Here we put forward a ferromagnet/NbSe2/ferromagnet heterostructure where the inte…
Quantum computers can potentially achieve an exponential speedup versus classical computers on certain computational tasks, as recently demonstrated in systems of superconducting qubits. However, these qubits have large footprints due to their large capacitor electrodes needed to suppress losses by avoiding dielectric materials. This tactic hinders scaling by increasing parasitic coupling among circuit components, degrading individual qubit addressability, and limiting the spatial density of qubits. Here, we take advantage of the unique properties of the van der Waals (vdW) materials to reduce…
We demonstrate that the inclusion of van der Waals dispersive interaction sensibly improves the prediction of lattice constants by density functional theory in iron-chalcogenides (FeCh) superconductor compounds, namely FeSe and FeTe. We show how generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange correlation potential overestimates the out-of-plane lattice constants in both compounds when compared with experiments. In addition, GGA predicts a too weak bonding between the neutral FeCh layers, with a sensible underestimation of the bulk modulus. van der Waals corrected simulations complete…
We show that in anisotropic or layered superconductors impurities induce a van der Waals attraction between flux lines. This attraction together with the disorder induced repulsion may change the low B - low T phase diagram significantly from that of the pure thermal case considered recently by Blatter and Geshkenbein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 4958 (1996)].
