Spectroscopy of vortex bound states can provide valuable information on the structure of the superconducting order parameter. Quasiparticle wavefunctions are expected to leak out in the directions of gap minima or nodes, if they exist, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) on these low-energy states should probe the momentum dependence of the gap. Anisotropy can also arise from band structure effects, however. We perform a quasiclassical calculation of the density of states of a single vortex in an anisotropic superconductor, and show that if the gap itself is not highly anisotropic, the Fermi surface anisotropy dominates, preventing direct observation of superconducting gap features. This serves as a cautionary message for the analysis of STS data on the vortex state on Fe-based superconductors, in particular LiFeAs, which we treat explicitly.
We investigate the fishtail effect, critical current density ($J_c$) and vortex dynamics in LiFeAs single crystals. The sample exhibits a second peak (SP) in the magnetization loop only with the field $||$ c-axis. We calculate a reasonably high $J_c$, however, values are lower than in 'Ba-122' and '1111'-type FeAs-compounds. Magnetic relaxation data imply a strong pinning which appears not to be due to conventional defects. Instead, its behavior is similar to that of the triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Our data suggest that the origin of the SP may be related to a vortex lattice phase tr…
If strong electron-electron interactions between neighboring Fe atoms mediate the Cooper pairing in iron-pnictide superconductors, then specific and distinct anisotropic superconducting energy gaps Δ_i(k) should appear on the different electronic bands i. Here we introduce intra-band Bogoliubov quasiparticle scattering interference (QPI) techniques for determination of Δ_i(k) in such materials, focusing on LiFeAs. We identify the three hole-like bands assigned previously as γ, α_2 and α_1, and we determine the anisotropy, magnitude and relative orientations of their Δ_i(k). These measurements …
Detailed tunneling spectroscopy of vortex core states can provide important insight to the momentum structure of the superconducting order parameter. We present a theoretical study of vortex bound states in iron-based superconductors by use of a realistic five-band model relevant to these systems, and superconductivity stabilized by spin-fluctuation generated pairing vertices yielding an $s\pm$ gap structure. The computed local density of states agrees remarkably well with both the bias dependence of the local conductance and the spatial structure of the low-bias conductance as obtained by sca…
A crucial step in revealing the nature of unconventional superconductivity is to investigate the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy has proven a powerful technique to probe this symmetry by measuring the quasiparticle interference (QPI) which sensitively depends on the superconducting pairing mechanism. A particularly well suited material to apply this technique is the stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs as it features clean, charge neutral cleaved surfaces without surface states and a relatively high Tc~18K. Our data reveal that in LiFeAs the qua…
Quasiparticle interference (QPI) by means of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and multi-orbital tight bind- ing calculations are used to investigate the band structure and superconducting order parameter of LiFeAs. Using this combination we identify intra- and interband scattering vectors between the hole (h) and electron (e) bands in the QPI maps. Discrepancies in the band dispersions inferred from previous ARPES and STM/STS are reconciled by recognizing a difference in the $k_z$ sensitivity for the two probes. The observ…
We investigated magnetic vortices in two stoichiometric LiFeAs samples by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The vortices were revealed by measuring the local electronic density of states (LDOS) at zero bias conductance of samples in magnetic fields between 0.5 and 12 T. From single vortex spectroscopy we extract the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length of both samples as $4.4\pm0.5$ nm and $4.1\pm0.5$ nm, in accordance with previous findings. However, in contrast to previous reports, our study reveals that the reported hexagonal to square-like vortex lattice transition is ab…
We utilize a combination of vector magnetic field and scanning tunneling microscopy to elucidate the 3D field-based electronic phase diagram of a correlated iron-based superconductor, LiFeAs. We observe, under a zero-field-cooled method, an ordered hexagonal vortex lattice ground-state in contrast to the disordered lattice observed under a field-cooled method. It transforms into a four-fold-symmetric state by increasing c-axis field and distorts elliptically upon tilting the field in-plane. The vortex lattice transformations correlate with the field dependent superconducting gap that character…
Using a realistic ten-orbital tight-binding model Hamiltonian fitted to the angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data on LiFeAs, we analyze the temperature, frequency, and momentum dependencies of quasiparticle interference (QPI) to identify gap sign changes in a qualitative way, following our original proposal [Phys. Rev. B 92, 184513 (2015)]. We show that all features present for the simple two-band model for the sign-changing $s_{+-}$-wave superconducting gap employed previously are still present in the realistic tight-binding approximation and gap values observed experimentally. We discuss…
High-precision measurements of magnetic penetration depth $λ$ in clean single crystals of LiFeAs and LiFeP superconductors reveal contrasting low-energy quasiparticle excitations. In LiFeAs the low-temperature $λ(T)$ shows a flat dependence indicative of a fully gapped state, which is consistent with previous studies. In contrast, LiFeP exhibits a $T$-linear dependence of superfluid density $\propto λ^{-2}$, indicating a nodal superconducting order parameter. A systematic comparison of quasiparticle excitations in the 1111, 122, and 111 families of iron-pnictide superconductors implies that th…
LiFeAs is one of the iron-based superconductors having multiple gaps with the possible sign reversal. To clarify how those novel natures affect the energy dissipation of magnetic vortices, we investigated the microwave surface impedance of LiFeAs single crystals under finite magnetic fields. The flux-flow resistivity enhanced rapidly at low magnetic fields, which is similar to the case of MgB$_{2}$. This is probably the consequence of the multiple-gap nature and the gap anisotropy. This suggest that the sign-reversal is not important for the flux-flow even for multiple-gap superconductors. As …

We investigate vortices in LiFeAs using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Zero-field tunneling spectra show two superconducting gaps without detectable spectral weight near the Fermi energy, evidencing fully-gapped multi-band superconductivity. We image vortices in a wide field range from 0.1 T to 11 T by mapping the tunneling conductance at the Fermi energy. A quasi-hexagonal vortex lattice at low field contains domain boundaries which consist of alternating vortices with unusual coordination numbers of 5 and 7. With increasing field, the domain boundaries become ill-defined, result…
Several angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies reveal a poorly nested Fermi surface of LiFeAs, far away from a spin density wave instability, and clear-cut superconducting gap anisotropies. On the other hand a very different, more nested Fermi surface and dissimilar gap anisotropies have been obtained from quasiparticle interference (QPI) data, which were interpreted as arising from intraband scattering within hole-like bands. Here we show that this ARPES-QPI paradox is completely resolved by interband scattering between the hole-like bands. The resolution follows from an ex…
A true critical current density, $j_{c}$, as opposite to commonly measured relaxed persistent (Bean) current, $j_{B}$, was extracted from the Campbell penetration depth, $λ_{C}(T,H)$ measured in single crystals of LiFeAs. The effective pinning potential is non-parabolic, which follows from the magnetic field - dependent Labusch parameter $α$. At the equilibrium (upon field - cooling), $α(H)$ is non-monotonic, but it is monotonic at a finite gradient of the vortex density. This behavior leads to a faster magnetic relaxation at the lower fields and provides a natural \emph{dynamic} explanation f…
Miniature Hall-probe arrays were used to measure the critical current densities for the three main directions of vortex motion in the stoichiometric LiFeAs superconductor. These correspond to vortices oriented along the c-axis moving parallel to the ab-plane, and to vortices in the ab-plane moving perpendicular to, and within the plane, respectively. The measurements were carried out in the low-field regime of strong vortex pinning, in which the critical current anisotropy is solely determined by the coherence length anisotropy parameter, ε_ξ. This allows extraction of ε_ξ at magnetic fields f…
The iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) have recently emerged as a promising single-material Majorana platform by hosting isolated Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at relatively high temperatures. To further verify its Majorana nature and move forward to build topological quantum qubit, it is highly desirable to achieve tunability for MZMs on homogeneous FeSCs. Here, with an in-situ strain device, we can controllably create MZMs on the homogeneous surface of stoichiometric superconductor LiFeAs by inducing a topological phase transition. The evolution of discrete energy modes inside a strained vortex…
The magnetic properties of LiFeAs, as single crystalline and polycrystalline samples, were investigated. The lower critical field deduced from the vortex penetration of two single crystals appears to be almost isotropic with a temperature dependence closer to that of two-gap superconductors. The parameters extracted from the reversible magnetizations of sintered polycrystalline samples are in good agreement with those from the single crystal data.
We measured the optical conductivity of superconducting LiFeAs. In the superconducting state, the formation of the condensate leads to a spectral-weight loss and yields a penetration depth of 225 nm. No sharp signature of the superconducting gap is observed. This suggests that the system is likely in the clean limit. A Drude-Lorentz parametrization of the data in the normal state reveals a quasiparticle scattering rate supportive of spin fluctuations and proximity to a quantum critical point.
A major question in Fe-based superconductors remains the structure of the pairing, in particular whether it is of unconventional nature. The electronic structure near vortices can serve as a platform for phase-sensitive measurements to answer this question. By solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for LiFeAs, we calculate the energy-dependent local electronic structure near a vortex for different nodeless gap-structure possibilities. At low energies, the local density of states (LDOS) around a vortex is determined by the normal-state electronic structure. However, at energies closer to the ga…
Majorana zero modes (MZMs) obey non-Abelian statistics and are considered building blocks for constructing topological qubits. Iron-based superconductors with topological band structures have emerged as promising hosting materials, since isolated candidate MZMs in the quantum limit have been observed inside the topological vortex cores. However, these materials suffer from issues related to alloying-induced disorder, uncontrolled vortex lattices and a low yield of topological vortices. Here, we report the formation of an ordered and tunable MZM lattice in naturally-strained stoichiometric LiFe…
The recent realization of pristine Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in vortices of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) provides a promising platform for long-sought-after fault-tolerant quantum computation. A large topological gap between the MZMs and the lowest excitations enabled detailed characterization of vortex MZMs in those materials. Despite those achievements, a practical implementation of topological quantum computation based on MZM braiding remains elusive in this new Majorana platform. Among the most pressing issues are the lack of controllable tuning methods for vortex MZMs and inhomogen…
The time of life of fermionic quasiparticles, the distribution of which in the momentum-energy space can be measured by angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), is the first quantity to look for fingerprints of interaction responsible for the superconducting pairing. Such an approach has been recently used for superconducting cuprates, but its direct application to pnictides was not possible due to essential three-dimensionality of the electronic band structure and magnetic ordering. Here, we report the investigation of the quasiparticle lifetime in LiFeAs, a non-magnetic stoichiometric supercond…
The lack of nesting of the electron and hole Fermi-surface sheets in the Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs, with a critical temperature of 18 K, has led to questions as to whether the origin of superconductivity in this material might be different from other Fe-based superconductors. Both angle-resolved photoemission and quasiparticle interference experiments have reported fully gapped superconducting order parameters with significant anisotropy. The system is also of interest because relatively strong correlations seem to be responsible for significant renormalization of the hole bands. Here we …
The quasiparticle spectrum inside the vortex core in the mixed state of a strongly type-II superconductors are studied. The s-wave symmetry for the gap parameter is assumed. The crossover behavior from dirty to clean limit is shown by numerical calculation based on the random matrix theory.
We report superconducting (SC) properties of stoichiometric LiFeAs (Tc = 17 K) studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). Although the vortex lattice exhibits no long-range order, well-defined SANS rocking curves indicate better ordering than in chemically doped 122-compounds. The London penetration depth of 210 nm, determined from the magnetic field dependence of the form factor, is compared to that calculated from the ARPES band structure with no adjustable parameters. Its temperature dependence is best described by a single isotropic SC gap of…
The thermal conductivity k of the iron-arsenide superconductor LiFeAs (Tc ~ 18K) was measured in single crystals at temperatures down to T~50mK and in magnetic fields up to H=17T, very close to the upper critical field Hc2~18T. For both directions of the heat current, parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis, a negligible residual linear term k/T is found as T ->0, revealing that there are no zero-energy quasiparticles in the superconducting state. The increase in k with magnetic field is the same for both current directions and it follows closely the dependence expected for an isot…
The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the vortex state has been probed by specific heat measurements under magnetic fields (H) for clean and dirty s-wave superconductors, Y(Ni1-xPtx)2B2C and Nb1-xTaxSe2. We find that the quasiparticle DOS per vortex is appreciably H-dependent in the clean-limit superconductors, while it is H-independent in the dirty superconductors as expected from a conventional rigid normal electron core picture. We discuss possible origins for our observations in terms of the shrinking of the vortex core radius with increasing H.
Quasiparticle transport in the vortex state of an s-wave superconductor at T -> 0 was investigated by measuring the thermal conductivity of LuNi_2B_2C down to 70 mK in a magnetic field perpendicular to the heat current. In zero field, there is no electronic conduction, as expected for a superconducting gap without nodes. However, as soon as vortices enter the sample quasiparticles are seen to conduct remarkably well, even better than they would in a typical d-wave superconductor. This is in stark conflict with the widely held view that quasiparticle states in s-wave superconductors just above …
The quasiparticle energy spectrum of an isolated vortex in a clean layered d-wave superconductor is calculated. The Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations are solved perturbatively, within the model of step-variation of the gap function, adjusting the Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon approach for low-lying excitations in cuprates. A large peak in the density of states in a "pancake" vortex is found, as a consequence of two-dimensionality and strong coupling.
The electronic spectrum of multi-vortex configurations in type-II superconductors is studied taking account of the effect of quasiparticle tunneling between the vortex cores. The tunneling is responsible for the formation of strongly coupled quasiparticle states for intervortex distances $a<a_c$, where the critical distance $a_c$ is of the order of several coherence lengths $ξ$. Analyzing the resulting spectra of vortex clusters bonded by the quasiparticle tunneling we find a transition from a set of degenerate Caroli - de Gennes - Matricon branches to anomalous branches similar to the ones in…
Identifying the uniqueness of FeP-based superconductors may shed new lights on the mechanism of superconductivity in iron-pnictides. Here, we report nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) studies on LiFeP and LiFeAs which have the same crystal structure but different pnictogen atoms. The NMR spectrum is sensitive to inhomogeneous magnetic fields in the vortex state and can provide the information on the superconducting pairing symmetry through the temperature dependence of London penetration depth $λ_L$. We find that $λ_L$ saturates below $T \sim 0.2$ $T_c$ in LiFeAs, where $T_c$ is the superconducti…
On the basis of the Bogolubov-de Gennes theory we develop an analytical description of low-energy extended quasiparticle states around an isolated flux line in a superconductor with gap nodes. The wavefunctions of these excitations and the corresponding density of states are shown to be strongly influenced by the interaction with a pure gauge potential due to the Aharonov-Bohm scenario.
We study several aspects of the structure of vortices in conventional s-wave Type $II$ superconductors. It is well-known that there are low energy quasiparticles bound to the core of a vortex. We show that under certain conditions, these quasiparticles form a degenerate Fermi gas with a finite density of states at the Fermi energy. In three dimensional superconductors, the result is a one dimensional Fermi gas of quasiparticles bound to the core of a vortex line. As is usual in one dimensional systems, interactions between the quasiparticles lead to Luttinger liquid behaviour. This may be prob…
Focusing on a quantum-limit behavior, we study a single vortex in a clean s-wave type-II superconductor by self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The discrete energy levels of the vortex bound states in the quantum limit is discussed. The vortex core radius shrinks monotonically up to an atomic-scale length on lowering the temperature T, and the shrinkage stops to saturate at a lower T. The pair potential, supercurrent, and local density of states around the vortex exhibit Friedel-like oscillations. The local density of states has particle-hole asymmetry induced by the vo…
We have measured the low temperature heat capacity Cp and microwave surface impedance Zs in the vortex state of YNi_2B_2C. In contrast to conventional s-wave superconductors, Cp shows a nearly \sqrt H-dependence. This \sqrt H-dependence persists even after the introduction of the columnar defects which change the electronic structure of the vortex core regime dramatically and strongly disturb the regular vortex lattice. On the other hand, flux flow resistivity obtained from Zs is nearly proportional to H. Taken together, these results indicate that the vortex state of YNi_2B_2C is fundamentall…
We theoretically study the dependence of the quasiparticle (QP) scattering rate $\varGamma$ on the uniaxial anisotropy of a Fermi surface with changing the magnetic field angle $α_{\rm M}$. We consider the QP scattering due to the non-magnetic impurities inside a single vortex core. The field-angle dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate $\varGamma(α_{\rm M})$ is sensitive to the sign-change of the pair potential. We show that with increasing the two dimensionality of the system, $\varGamma(α_{\rm M})$ reflects more clearly whether there is the sign-change in the pair potential.
In a recent Letter Morita, Kohmoto and Maki analyzed the structure of quasiparticle states near a single vortex in a d-wave superconductor using an approximate version of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes theory. Their principal result is the existence of a bound state within the core region at finite energy with full rotational symmetry, which they assert explains the recent scanning tunneling microscopy results on YBCO single crystals. Here we argue that the approximation used in this work is fundamentally inadequate for the description of a d-wave vortex and that the obtained circular symmetry of …
The electronic structure of the giant vortex states in a mesoscopic superconducting disk is studied in a dirty limit using the Usadel approach. The local density of states profiles are shown to be strongly affected by the effect of quasiparticle (QP) tunneling between the states localized in the vortex core and the ones bound to the sample edge. Decreasing temperature leads to a crossover between the edge-dominated and core-dominated regimes in the magnetic field dependence of the tunneling conductance. This crossover is discussed in the context of the efficiency of quasiparticle cooling by th…
In copper- and iron-based unconventional superconductors, the Bogoliubov quasiparticles interact with a spin resonance at momentum $(π,π)$. This interaction is revealed by specific signatures in the quasiparticle spectroscopies, like kinks in photoemission and dips in tunneling. We study these signatures, as they appear inside and around a vortex core in the local density of states (LDOS), a property accessible experimentally by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Our model retains the whole nonlocal structure of the self-energy in space and time and is therefore not amenable to a Hamiltonian tre…
We calculate the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the Raman response, superfluid density and the NMR relaxation rate in the vortex state of a d-wave superconductor arising from the Doppler energy shift of extended quasiparticle states. Our results are valid both at low temperatures, where we observe scaling with variable $TH^{-1/2}$ and obtain explicit form of the scaling functions, and beyond this region. We derive a universal frequency dependent scaling relation for the Raman response, and discuss the breakdown of the single relaxation rate approach to NMR response.
We discuss the evolution of the local quasiparticle spectral density and the related tunneling conductance measurable by the scanning tunneling microscope, as a function of distance r and angle θfrom the vortex core in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. We consider the effects of electronic disorder and of a strongly anisotropic tunneling matrix element, and show that in real materials they will likely obscure the ~1/r asymptotic tail in the zero-bias tunneling conductance expected from the straightforward semiclassical analysis. We also give a prediction for the tunneling conductance anisotropy ar…
Motivated by understanding Majorana zero modes in topological superfluids in particle-number conserving framework beyond the present framework, we study the effect of particle number conservation on the Berry phase resulting from transport of a bound quasiparticle around a superfluid vortex. We find that particle-number non-conserving calculations based on Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations are unable to capture the correct physics when the quasiparticle is within the penetration depth of the vortex core where the superfluid velocity is non-zero. Particle number conservation is crucial for d…
We theoretically investigate the quasiparticle scattering rate $\varGamma$ inside a vortex core in the existence of non-magnetic impurities distributed randomly in a superconductor. We show that the dependence of $\varGamma$ on the magnetic field direction is sensitive to the sign of the pair potential. The behavior of $\varGamma$ is quite different between an s-wave and a d-wave pair potential, where these are assumed to have the same amplitude anisotropy, but a sign change only for the d-wave one. It is suggested that measurements of the microwave surface impedance with changing applied-fiel…
We demonstrate an efficient numerical method for obtaining unique solutions to the Eilenberger equation for a mesoscopic or nanoscale superconductor. In particular, we calculate the local density of states of a circular d-wave island containing a single vortex. The "vortex shadow" effect is found to strongly depend on the quasiparticle energy in such small systems. We show how to construct by geometry quasiparticle trajectories confined in a finite-size system with specular reflections at the boundary, and discuss the stability of the numerical solutions even in the case of vanishing order par…
In the mixed state of an extreme type-II d-wave superconductor and within a broad regime of weak magnetic fields H_c1 << H << H_c2, the low energy Bogoliubov-deGennes quasiparticles can be effectively described as Dirac fermions moving in the field of singular scalar and vector potentials. Although the effective linearized Hamiltonian operator formally does not depend on the structure of vortex cores, a singular nature of the perturbation requires choosing a self-adjoint extension of the Hamiltonian by imposing additional boundary conditions at vortex locations. Each vortex is described by a s…
We perform large-scale numerical calculations self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations in the magnetic field together with random impurities to directly demonstrate the typical quasi-particle interference (QPI) in the presence of vortices as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy experiments in unconventional superconductors. The calculations reveal that vortex itself never works as a scatter causing the QPI pattern but vortex core containing impurity brings about the enhancement of the sign-preserving QPI peaks. Its origin is Andreev bound-states dist…
Charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors leads to collective pinning of flux vortices, whereas isovalent doping does not. Moreover, flux pinning in the charge-doped compounds is consistently described by the mean-free path fluctuations introduced by the dopant atoms, allowing for the extraction of the elastic quasiparticle scattering rate. The absence of scattering by dopant atoms in isovalently doped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ is consistent with the observation of a linear temperature dependence of the low-temperature penetration depth in this material.
The local density of states (LDOS) at one of the vortex lattice cores in a high Tc superconductor is studied by using a self-consistent mean field theory including interactions for both antiferromagnetism (AF) and d-wave superconductivity (DSC). The parameters are chosen in such a way that in an optimally doped sample the AF order is completely suppressed while DSC prevails. In the mixed state, we show that the local AF-like SDW order appears near the vortex core and acts as an effective local magnetic field on the quasiparticles. As a result, the LDOS at the core exhibits a double-peak struct…
We consider the problem of the vortex contribution to thermal properties of dirty d-wave superconductors. In the clean limit, Volovik has argued that the main contribution to the density of states in a d-wave superconductor arises from extended quasiparticle states which may be treated semiclassically, giving rise to a specific heat contribution δC(H)\ltsim H^{1/2} . We show that the extended states continue to dominate the dirty limit, but lead to a H \log H behavior at the lowest fields, H_{c1}\ll H\ll H_{c2}. This crossover may explain recent discrepancies in specicific heat measurements at…
We report the spin Knight shift (K_s) and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) in the vortex state as a function of magnetic field (H) up to 28 T in the high-T_c superconductor TlSr_{2}CaCu_2O_{6.8} (T_c=68 K). At low temperatures well below T_{c}, both K_s and 1/T_1 measured around the middle point between two nearest vortices (saddle point) increase substantially with increasing field, which indicate that the quasiparticle states with an ungapped spectrum are extended outside the vortex cores in a d-wave superconductor. The density of states (DOS) around the saddle point is found…
We calculate the dependence of the interlayer quasiparticle conductivity, $σ_q$, in a Josephson coupled d-wave superconductor on the magnetic field B||c and the temperature T. We consider a clean superconductor with resonant impurity scattering and a dominant coherent interlayer tunneling. When pancake vortices in adjacent layers are weakly correlated at low T the conductivity increases sharply with B before reaching an extended region of slow linear growth, while at high T it initially decreases and then reaches the same linear regime. For correlated pancakes $σ_q$ increases much more strongl…
We present the results of a microscopic calculation of the longitudinal thermal conductivity, $κ$, of a d-wave superconductor in the mixed state. Our results show an increase in the thermal conductivity with the applied field at low temperatures, and a decrease followed by a nearly field independent $κ(H)$ at higher temperatures, in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. We discuss the relationship between the slope of the superconducting gap and the plateau in $κ(H)$.
Scanning tunneling microscopy is used to image the additional quasiparticle states generated by quantized vortices in the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. They exhibit a Cu-O bond oriented 'checkerboard' pattern, with four unit cell (4a0) periodicity and a ~30 angstrom decay length. These electronic modulations may be related to the magnetic field-induced, 8a0 periodic, spin density modulations of decay length ~70 angstroms recently discovered in La1.84Sr0.16CuO4. The proposed explanation is a spin density wave localized surrounding each vortex core. General theoretical principles predi…
From measurements of the c-axis I-V characteristics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} (Bi-2212) mesas we obtain the field dependence (H || c) of the quasiparticle (QP) conductivity, sigma_q(H,T), and of the Josephson critical current density, J_c(H,T). The quasiparticle conductivity sigma_q(H) increases sharply with H and reaches a plateau at 0.05 T <H< 0.3 T. We explain such behavior by the dual effect of supercurrents around vortices. First, they enhance the QP DOS, leading to an increase of sigma_q with H at low H and, second, they enhance the scattering rate for…
Low temperature specific heat has been measured for an overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ (x = 0.22) single crystal. The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the mixed state is found to deviate from the predicted scaling law $C_{vol}=Hf(T/H^{1/2})$. However, this scaling behavior is nicely reconciled if one considers the normal core region ($ξ\approx$ 21$Å$) which gives small contribution to the total DOS. The radius of the core and other parameters derived are consistent with reported values. Our results suggest that there is no zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP), which is predicted by the simp…
We use a real-space recursion method to calculate the local density of states (LDOS) within a model that contains both d-wave superconducting and antiferromagnetic order. We focus on the LDOS in the superconducting phase near single vortices with either normal or antiferromagnetic cores. Furthermore, we study the low-energy quasiparticle structure when magnetic vortices operate as pinning centers for surrounding unidirectional spin density waves (stripes). We calculate the Fourier transformed LDOS and show how the energy dependence of relevant Fourier components can be used to determine the na…
We report muon spin rotation measurements on the conventional type-II superconductor V3Si that provide clear evidence for changes to the inner structure of a vortex due to the delocalization of bound quasiparticle core states. The experimental findings described here confirm a key prediction of recent microscopic theories describing interacting vortices. The effects of vortex-vortex interactions on the magnetic and electronic structure of the vortex state are of crucial importance to the interpretation of experiments on both conventional and exotic superconductors in an applied magnetic field.
We calculate the magnetic field dependence of quasiparticle transport properties in the vortex state of a d-wave superconductor arising solely from the quasiparticle's Doppler shift in the superflow field surrounding the vortex. Qualitative features agree well with experiments on cuprate and heavy fermion superconductors at low fields and temperatures. We derive scaling relations in the variable $T/H^{1/2}$ valid at sufficiently low temperatures $T$ and fields $H$, but show that these relations depend on the scattering phase shift, and are in general fulfilled only approximately even in the cl…
