In this short note, based on Carleman estimates and Holmgren's type theorems, we provide a converse theorem of the classical Huygens principle for free wave equations. Possible generalizations to other underlying space-times or other wave type equations are also discussed.
In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of solutions to the logarithmic Minkowski problem in $\mathbb{R}^3$ without symmetry condition, provided the density of the measure is close to $1$ in $C^α$ norm. This result also implies the uniqueness of self-similar solutions to the anisotropic Gauss curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$ when the speed function is $C^α$ close to a positive constant.
We give a new proof of a classical uniqueness theorem of Alexandrov using the weak uniqueness continuation theorem of Bers-Nirenberg. We prove a version of this theorem with the minimal regularity assumption: the spherical hessians of the corresponding convex bodies as Radon measures are nonsingular.
By means of Banach fixed point theorem , the uniqueness of Boltzmann Equation generalizaled Solutions in Sobolev spaces in $L^1(\mathbb{R}^+\times \mathbb{R}^n\times \mathbb{R}^n)$, can be proved as well as Boltzmann Equation renormalized solutions uniqueness
We obtain the existence, regularity, uniqueness of the non-stationary problems of a class of non-Newtonian fluid is a power law fluid with $p>9/5$ in the half-space under slip boundary conditions.
We address the uniqueness problem for mild solutions of the Boussinesq system in R 3. We provide several uniqueness classes on the velocity and the temperature, generalizing in this way the classical C([0, T ]; L 3 (R 3))-uniqueness result for mild solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.
We prove a uniqueness theorem for compactly supported initial data for the variable speed wave equation arising in models of thermoacoustic tomography, given measurements on a part of the boundary. The proof is based on domain of dependence arguments and D. Tataru's unique continuation theorem.
In this paper we show the uniqueness of the critical point for \emph{semi-stable} solutions of the problem $$\begin{cases} -Δu=f(u)&\text{in }Ω\\ u>0&\text{in }Ω\\ u=0&\text{on } \partialΩ,\end{cases}$$ where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth bounded domain whose boundary has \emph{nonnegative} curvature and $f(0)\ge0$. It extends a result by Cabré-Chanillo to the case where the curvature of $\partialΩ$ vanishes.
We construct a singular solution of a stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with square-exponential nonlinearity having linear behavior around zero. In view of Trudinger-Moser inequality, this type of nonlinearity has an energy-critical growth. We use this singular solution to prove non-uniqueness of strong solutions for the Cauchy problem of the corresponding semilinear heat equation. The proof relies on explicit computation showing a regularizing effect of the heat equation in an appropriate functional space.
In this paper, we present the result of maximum regularity of the mild solution of the fractional Cauchy problem. As our main result, we investigate the uniqueness of mild solutions for time-fractional Navier-Stokes equations in class $C\left([0,\infty);L^{N}\left( \mathbb{R}^{N}\right)^{N}\right)$ by means of the estimates $L^{p}-L^{q}$ of Giga-Shor inequality and the Gronwall inequality.
We give a description of a magnetohydrodynamical system in $n$ dimension using the exterior derivative. We then prove existence of global solutions for small initial data and local existence for arbitrary large data in two classes of critical spaces -- $L^q_tL^p_x$ and $\mathcal{C}_tL^p_x$, as well as uniqueness for solutions in $\mathcal{C}_tL^p_x$.
We present a new, easy, and elementary proof of Jensen's Theorem on the uniqueness of infinity harmonic functions. The idea is to pass to a finite difference equation by taking maximums and minimums over small balls.
This note shows that under $(p,α, N)\in (1,\infty)\times(0,2)\times\mathbb Z_+$ the fractional order differential inequality $$ (\dagger)\quad u^p \le (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}} u\quad\hbox{in}\quad\mathbb R^{N} $$ has the property that if $N\leα$ then a nonnegative solution to $(\dagger)$ is unique, and if $N>α$ then the uniqueness of a nonnegative weak solution to $(\dagger)$ occurs when and only when $p\le N/(N-α)$, thereby innovatively generalizing Gidas-Spruck's result for $u^p+Δu\le 0$ in $\R^N$ discovered in \cite{GS}.
In this paper, we are concerned with the uniqueness result for non-negative solutions of the higher-order Lane-Emden equations involving the GJMS operators on $\mathbb{S}^n$. Since the classical moving-plane method based on the Kelvin transform and maximum principle fails in dealing with the high-order elliptic equations in $\mathbb{S}^n$, we first employ the Mobius transform between $\mathbb{S}^n$ and $\mathbb{R}^n$, poly-harmonic average and iteration arguments to show that the higher-order Lane-Emden equation on $\mathbb{S}^n$ is equivalent to some integral equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Then …
This paper concerns the uniqueness of weak solutions to the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystal models in $\mathbb R^2$, with both general Leslie stress tensors and general Oseen-Frank density. It is shown here that such a system admits a unique weak solution provided that the Frank coefficients are close to some positive constant, which solves an interesting open problem. One of the main ideas of our proof is to perform suitable energy estimates at level one order lower than the natural basic energy estimates for the Ericksen-Leslie system.
In this paper, we establish a type of uniqueness and nondegeneracy results for positive solutions to the following nonlocal Kirchhoff equations \begin{eqnarray*} -\left(a+b\int_{\mathbb{R}^{3}}|\nabla u|^{2}\text{d} x\right)Δu+u=|u|^{p-1}u & & \text{in }\mathbb{R}^{3}, \end{eqnarray*} where $a,b$ are positive constants and $1<p<5$. Before this paper, it seems that there have no this type of results even on positive ground states solutions to Kirchhoff type equations, much less on general positive solutions. To overcome the difficulty brought by the nonlocality, some new observation on Kirchhof…
We consider the hydrodynamics for biaxial nematic phases described by a field of orthonormal frame, which can be derived from a molecular-theory-based tensor model. We prove the uniqueness of global weak solutions to the Cauchy problem of the frame hydrodynamics in dimensional two. The proof is mainly based on the suitable weaker energy estimates within the Littlewood--Paley analysis. We take full advantage of the estimates of nonlinear terms with rotational derivatives on $SO(3)$, together with cancellation relations and dissipative structures of the biaxial frame system.
We consider a generalization of the inverse problem of the electrocardiography in the framework of the theory of elliptic and parabolic differential operators. More precisely, starting with the standard bidomain mathematical model related to the problem of the reconstruction of the transmembrane potential in the myocardium from known body surface potentials we formulate a more general transmission problem for elliptic and parabolic equations in the Sobolev type spaces and describe conditions, providing uniqueness theorems for its solutions. Next, the new transmission problem is interpreted in …
In this paper, we prove that the existence and uniqueness of globally weak solutions to the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative Camassa-Holm equation in time weighted $H^1$ space. First, we derive an equivalent semi-linear system by introducing some new variables, and present the globally conservative solutions of this equation in time weighted $H^1$ space. Second, we show that the peakon solutions are conservative weak solutions in $H^1.$ Finally, given a conservative solution, we introduce a set of auxiliary variables tailored to this particular solution, and prove that these variables…
We investigate a stochastic transport equation driven by a multiplicative noise. For $L^q(0,T;W^{1,p}({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}^d))$ drift coefficient and $W^{1,r}({\mathbb R}^d)$ initial data, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of stochastic strong solutions (in $W^{1,r}_{loc}({\mathbb R}^d))$.In particular, when $r=\infty$, we establish a Lipschitz estimate for solutions and this question is opened by Fedrizzi and Flandoli in case of $L^q(0,T;L^p({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}^d))$ drift coefficient. Moreover, opposite to the deterministic case where $L^q(0,T;W^{1,p}({\mathbb R}^d;{\mathbb R}…
We study the equation \begin{equation*}\label{P0} (-Δ)^s u = |x|^α u^{\frac{N+2s+2α}{N-2s}}\mbox{ in }\mathbb{R}^N,\tag{P} \end{equation*} where $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplacian operator with $0 < s < 1$, $α>-2s$ and $N>2s$. We prove the linear non-degeneracy of positive radially symmetric solutions of the equation (\ref{P0}) and, as a consequence, a uniqueness result of those solutions with Morse index equal to one. In particular, the ground state solution is unique. Our non-degeneracy result extends in the radial setting some known theorems done by Dávila, Del Pino and Sire (see \cite[Th…
In this Note, we present a Calderón-type uniqueness theorem on the Cauchy problem of stochastic partial differential equations. To this aim, we introduce the concept of stochastic pseudo-differential operators, and establish their boundedness and other fundamental properties. The proof of our uniqueness theorem is based on a new Carleman-type estimate.
This work establishes a strong uniqueness property for a class of planar locally integrable vector fields. A result on pointwise convergence to the boundary value is also proved for bounded solutions.
We study the $C^4$ smooth convex bodies $\mathbb{K}\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying $K(x)=u(x)^{1-p}$, where $x\in\mathbb{S}^n$, $K$ is the Gauss curvature of $\partial\mathbb{K}$, $u$ is the support function of $\mathbb{K}$, and $p$ is a constant. In the case of $n=2$, either when $p\in[-1,0]$ or when $p\in(0,1)$ in addition to a pinching condition, we show that $\mathbb{K}$ must be the unit ball. This partially answers a conjecture of Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang about the uniqueness of the $L_p$-Minkowski problem in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Moreover, we give an explicit pinching constant depending onl…
This work is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of generalized (mild or distributional) solutions to (possibly degenerate) Fokker-Planck equations $ρ_t-Δβ(ρ)+{\rm div}(Db(ρ)ρ)=0$ in $(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^d,$ $ρ(0,x) \equiv ρ_0(x)$. Under suitable assumptions on $β:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R},\,b:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $D:\mathbb{R}^d\to\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge1$, this equation generates a unique flow $ρ(t)=S(t)ρ_0:[0,\infty)\to L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$ as a mild solution in the sense of nonlinear semigroup theory. This flow is also unique in the class of $L^\infty((0,T)\times\mathbb{R}^…
A well-known question of Perelman concerns the classification of noncompact ancient solutions to the Ricci flow in dimension $3$ which have positive sectional curvature and are $κ$-noncollapsed. In this paper, we solve the analogous problem for mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and prove that the rotationally symmetric bowl soliton is the only noncompact ancient solution of mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which is strictly convex and noncollapsed.
Using ODE-methods and trapping regions derived by Mattingly and Sinai we give a new proof of the existence and uniqueness of solutions to Navier-Stokes equations with periodic boundary conditions on the plane.
We consider the $\mathbb{T}^{4}$ cubic NLS which is energy-critical. We study the unconditional uniqueness of solution to the NLS via the cubic Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy, an uncommon method, and does not require the existence of solution in Strichartz type spaces. We prove $U$-$V$ multilinear estimates to replace the previously used Sobolev multilinear estimates, which fail on $\mathbb{T}^{4}$. To incorporate the weaker estimates, we work out new combinatorics from scratch and compute, for the first time, the time integration limits, in the recombined Duhamel-Born expansion. The new combinato…
Mean curvature flow evolves isometrically immersed base manifolds $M$ in the direction of their mean curvatures in an ambient manifold $\bar{M}$. If the base manifold $M$ is compact, the short time existence and uniqueness of the mean curvature flow are well-known. For complete isometrically immersed submanifolds of arbitrary codimensions, the existence and uniqueness are still unsettled even in the Euclidean space. In this paper, we solve the uniqueness problem affirmatively for the mean curvature flow of general codimensions and general ambient manifolds. In the second part of the paper, ins…
Under some assumptions on the vectors $a_{1},..,a_{n} \in\mathbb{R}^{k}$ and the function $B : \mathbb{R}^{n} \to \mathbb{R}$ we find the sharp estimate of the expression $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{k}} B(u_{1}(a_{1}\cdot x),..., u_{n}(a_{n}\cdot x))dx$ in terms of $\int_{\mathbb{R}}u_{j}(y)dy, j=1,...,n.$ In some particular case we will show that these assumptions on $B$ imply that there is only one Brascamp--Lieb inequality.
We prove uniqueness of solutions for the nonlocal Liouville equation $$ (-Δ)^{1/2} w = K e^w \quad \mbox{in $\mathbb{R}$} $$ with finite total $Q$-curvature $\int_{\mathbb{R}} K e^w \, dx< +\infty$. Here the prescribed $Q$-curvature function $K=K(|x|) > 0$ is assumed to be a positive, symmetric-decreasing function satisfying suitable regularity and decay bounds. In particular, we obtain uniqueness of solutions in the Gaussian case with $K(x) = \exp(-x^2)$. Our uniqueness proof exploits a connection of the nonlocal Liouville equation to ground state solitons for Calogero--Moser derivative NLS, …
We show the $L^r(\mathbb{R}^d, μ)$-uniqueness for any $r \in (1, 2]$ and the essential self-adjointness of a Dirichlet operator $Lf = Δf +\langle \frac{1}ρ\nabla ρ, \nabla f \rangle$, $f \in C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with $d \geq 3$ and $μ=ρdx$. In particular, $\nabla ρ$ is allowed to be in $L^d_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{R}^d)$ or in $L^{2+\varepsilon}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{R}^d)$ for some $\varepsilon>0$, while $ρ$ is required to be locally bounded below and above by strictly positive constants. The main tools in this paper are elliptic regularity results for divergence and non-dive…
Let $Γ$ be the hyperbola $\{(x,y)\in\mathbb R^2 : xy=1\}$ and $Λ_β$ be the lattice-cross defined by $Λ_β=\left(\mathbb Z\times\{0\}\right)\cup\left(\{0\}\timesβ\mathbb Z\right)$ in $\mathbb R^2,$ where $β$ is a positive real. A result of Hedenmalm and Montes-Rodríguez says that $\left(Γ,Λ_β\right)$ is a Heisenberg uniqueness pair if and only if $β\leq1.$ In this paper, we show that for a rational perturbation of $Λ_β,$ namely \[Λ_β^θ=\left((\mathbb Z+\{θ\})\times\{0\}\right)\cup\left(\{0\}\timesβ\mathbb Z\right),\] where $θ=1/{p},~\text{for some}~{p}\in\mathbb N$ and $β$ is a positive real, th…
We prove the existence of stationary solutions for the density of an infinitely extended plasma interacting with an arbitrary configuration of background charges. Furthermore, we show that the solution cannot be unique if the total charge of the background is attractive. In this case, infinitely many different stationary solutions exist. The non-uniqueness can be explained by the presence of trapped particles orbiting the attractive background charge.
We give background which shows the connection between the mean value theorem and the obstacle problem, and then we prove that a set is a mean value set for an elliptic operator of the form $Lu := \partial_i (a^{ij}(x) \partial_j u(x))$ if and only if it arises as the noncontact set of an obstacle problem involving the Green's function of the operator.
A classical result about minimal geodesics on R^2 with Z^2 periodic metric that goes back to H.M. Morse asserts that a minimal geodesic that is asymptotic to a periodic minimal geodesic cannot intersect any periodic minimal geodesic of the same period. This paper treats a similar theorem for nonparametric minimizing hypersurfaces without selfintersections -- as were studied by J. Moser, V. Bangert, P.H. Rabinowitz, E. Stredulinsky and others.
We rereview the classical Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem and the related uniqueness theorem of Holmgren, in the simple setting of powers of the Laplacian and a smooth curve segment in the plane. As a local problem, the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya and Holmgren theorems supply a complete answer to the existence and uniqueness issues. Here, we consider a global uniqueness problem of Holmgren's type. Perhaps surprisingly, we obtain a connection with the theory of quadrature identities, which demonstrates that rather subtle algebraic properties of the curve come into play. For instance, if $Ω$ is the interior…
Let $F : \mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^{N\times n} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^N$ be a Caratheodory map. In this paper we consider the problem of existence and uniqueness of weakly differentiable global strong a.e. solutions $u: \mathbb{R}^n \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}^N$ to the fully nonlinear PDE system \[\label{1} \tag{1} F(\cdot,Du ) \,=\, f, \ \ \text{ a.e. on }\mathbb{R}^n, \] when $ f\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)^N$. This problem has not been considered before. By introducing an appropriate notion of ellipticity, we prove existence of solution to \eqref{1} in a tailored Sobolev "energy" space (known…
An inverse problem of finding an obstacle and the boundary condition on its surface from the fixed-energy scattering data is studied. A new method is developed for a proof of the uniqueness results. The method does not use the discreteness of the spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian in a bounded domain. Proof of the uniqueness results is based on the fact that the Hilbert space of square integrable functions is separable.
The existence of weak solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in the whole plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ is proven. This particular geometry was the only case left open since the work of Leray in 1933. The reason is that due to the absence of boundaries the local behavior of the solutions cannot be controlled by the enstrophy in two dimensions. We overcome this difficulty by constructing approximate weak solutions having a prescribed mean velocity on some given bounded set. As a corollary, we obtain infinitely many weak solutions in $\mathbb{R}^2$ parameterized by this mean velocity, which …
We give a geometric approach to proving know regularity and existence theorems for the 2D Navier-Stokes Equations. We feel this point of view is instructive in better understanding the dynamics. The technique is inspired by constructions in the Dynamical Systems.
Two measurable sets $S, Λ\subseteq \mathcal{R}^d$ form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair, if every bounded measure $μ$ with support in S whose Fourier transform vanishes on Λ must be zero. We show that a quadratic hypersurface and the union of two hyperplanes in general position form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair in $\mathcal{R}^d$. As a corollary we obtain a new, surprising version of the classical Cramér-Wold theorem: a bounded measure supported on a quadratic hypersurface is uniquely determined by its projections onto two generic hyperplanes (whereas an arbitrary measure requires the knowledge of…
