We study a class of infinite dimensional Lie algebras called generalized Witt algebras (in one variable). These include the classical Witt algebra and the centerless Virasoro algebra as important examples. We show that any such generalized Witt algebra is a semisimple, indecomposable Lie algebra which does not contain any abelian Lie subalgebras of dimension greater than one. We develop an invariant of these generalized Witt algebras called the spectrum, and use it to show that there exist infinite families of nonisomorphic, simple, generalized Witt algebras and infinite families of nonisomorphic, nonsimple, generalized Witt algebras. We develop a machinery that can be used to study the endomorphisms of a generalized Witt algebra in the case that the spectrum is "discrete". We use this to show, that among other things, every nonzero Lie algebra endomorphism of the classical Witt algebra is an automorphism and every endomorphism of the centerless Virasoro algebra fixes a canonical element up to scalar multiplication. However, not every injective Lie algebra endomorphism of the centerless Virasoro algebra is an automorphism.
In this paper, we prove that every invertible $2$-local or local automorphism of a simple generalized Witt algebra over any field of characteristic $0$ is an automorphism. In particular, every $2$-local or local automorphism of Witt algebras $W_n$ is an automorphism for all $n\in \mathbb{N}$. But some simple generalized Witt algebras indeed have $2$-local (and local) automorphisms that are not automorphisms.
We describe infinite-dimensional Leibniz algebras whose associated Lie algebra is the Witt algebra and we prove the triviality of low-dimensional Leibniz cohomology groups of the Witt algebra with the coefficients in itself.
We construct homomorphisms from the universal enveloping algebra of the positive (part of the) Witt algebra to several different Artin-Schelter regular algebras, and determine their kernels and images. As a result, we produce elementary proofs that the universal enveloping algebras of the Virasoro algebra, the Witt algebra, and the positive Witt algebra are neither left nor right noetherian.
This paper is primarily concerned with the first cohomology of $\frak{gl}_{0|2}$ with coefficients in the generalized Witt Lie superalgebra, where $\frak{gl}_{0|2}$ is a subalgebra of the general linear Lie superalgebra. The derivations and inner derivations from $\frak{gl}_{0|2}$ into submodules of the generalized Witt Lie superalgebra are represented by matrices, respectively. Then the first cohomology of $\frak{gl}_{0|2}$ with coefficients in the generalized Witt Lie superalgebra is completely determined by matrices.
In this paper, we characterize the graded post-Lie algebra structures and a class of shifting post-Lie algebra structures on the Witt algebra. We obtain some new Lie algebras and give a class of their modules. As an application, the homogeneous Rota-Baxter operators and a class of non-homogeneous Rota-Baxter operators of weight $1$ on the Witt algebra are studied.
For any factorization domain $\cal A$ and an algebra endomorphism $σ$ of $\cal A$, there exists a non-associative algebra $({\cal A},σ,[\cdot,\cdot])$ with multiplication satisfying skew-symmetry and generalized (twisted) Jacobi identities, called a $σ$-deformed Witt algebra. In this paper, we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for the algebra $({\cal A},σ,[\cdot,\cdot])$ to be simple.
In this paper, we prove that every 2-local derivation on Witt algebras $W_n, W_n^+$ or $W_n^{++} $ is a derivation for all $n=1,2,\cdots,\infty$. As a consequence we obtain that every 2-local derivation on any centerless generalized Virasoro algebra of higher rank is a derivation.
In this paper, we prove that every local derivation on Witt algebras $W_n, W_n^+$ or $W_n^{++} $ is a derivation for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$. As a consequence, we obtain that every local derivation on a centerless generalized Virasoro algebra of higher rank is a derivation.
In this paper, a simple Lie algebra, referred to as the completed Witt Lie algebra, is introduced. Its derivation algebra and automorphism group are completely described. As a byproduct, it is obtained that the first cohomology group of this Lie algebra with coefficients in its adjoint module is trivial. Furthermore, we completely determine the conjugate classes of this Lie algebra under its automorphism group, and also obtain that this Lie algebra does not contain any nonzero ad-locally finite element.
This paper initiates the study of 2-local derivations on Lie algebras over fields of prime characteristic. Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simple Jacobson-Witt algebra $W_n$ over a field of prime characteristic $p$ with cardinality no less than $p^n$. In this paper, we study properties of 2-local derivations on $\mathfrak{g}$, and show that every 2-local derivation on $\mathfrak{g}$ is a derivation.
We construct the universal enveloping preassociative and postassociative algebra for a pre-Lie and a postLie algebra respectively. We show that the pairs $(\mathrm{preLie},\mathrm{preAs})$ and $(\mathrm{postLie},\mathrm{postAs})$ are Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt-pairs, for the first one it's a reproof of the result of V. Dotsenko and P. Tamaroff.
Let $P_n=k[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial algebra over a field $k$ of characteristic zero in the variables $x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n$ and $\mathscr{L}_n$ be the left-symmetric Witt algebra of all derivations of $P_n$. We describe all right operator identities of $\mathscr{L}_n$ and prove that the set of all algebras $\mathscr{L}_n$, where $n\geq 1$, generates the variety of all left-symmetric algebras. We also describe a class of general (not only right operator) identities for $\mathscr{L}_n$.
Let $W_+$ be the positive Witt algebra, which has a $C$-basis $\{e_n: n \in Z_{\geq 1}\}$, with Lie bracket $[ e_i, e_j] = (j-i) e_{i+j}$. We study the two-sided ideal structure of the universal enveloping algebra $U(W_+)$ of $W_+$. We show that if $I$ is a (two-sided) ideal of $U(W_+)$ generated by quadratic expressions in the $e_i$, then $U(W_+)/I$ has finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, and that such ideals satisfy the ascending chain condition. We conjecture that analogous facts hold for arbitrary ideals of $U(W_+)$, and verify a version of these conjectures for radical Poisson ideals of th…
We first quantize the Witt algebra in characteristic 0. Then, we consider the reduction modulo p of our formulas. This gives polynomial deformations of the restricted envelopping algebra of the Witt algebra. By this way, we get new families of noncommutative noncocommutative Hopf algebras of dimension p^p in char p.
We provide a short alternative homological argument showing that any invariant symmetric bilinear form on simple modular generalized Jacobson-Witt algebras vanishes, and outline another, deformation-theoretic one, allowing to describe such forms on simple modular Lie algebras of contact type.
We classify all graded compatible left-symmetric algebraic structures on high rank Witt algebras, and classify all non-graded ones satisfying a minor condition. Furthermore, graded compatible left-symmetric algebraic structures on high rank Virasoro algebras are also classified.
We prove a version of the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem for profinite pronilpotent Lie algebras in which their symmetric and universal enveloping algebras are replaced with appropriate formal analogues and discuss some immediate corollaries of this result.
In this paper we construct ternary $q$-Virasoro-Witt algebras which $q$-deform the ternary Virasoro-Witt algebras constructed by Curtright, Fairlie and Zachos using $su(1,1)$ enveloping algebra techniques. The ternary Virasoro-Witt algebras constructed by Curtright, Fairlie and Zachos depend on a parameter and are not Nambu-Lie algebras for all but finitely many values of this parameter. For the parameter values for which the ternary Virasoro-Witt algebras are Nambu-Lie, the corresponding ternary $q$-Virasoro-Witt algebras constructed in this article are also Hom-Nambu-Lie because they are obt…
A Hom-type algebra is called involutive if its Hom map is multiplicative and involutive. In this paper, we obtain an explicit construction of the free involutive Hom-associative algebra on a Hom-module. We then apply this construction to obtain the universal enveloping algebra of an involutive Hom-Lie algebra. Finally we obtain a Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem for the enveloping associative algebra of an involutive Hom-Lie algebra.
In this paper we show that the tensor product of skew PBW extensions is a skew PBW ex- tension. We also characterize the enveloping algebra of a skew PBW extension. Finally, we establish sufficient conditions to guarantee the property of being skew Calabi-Yau algebra over skew PBW extensions.
This work is prompted by the long standing question of whether it is possible for the universal enveloping algebra of an infinite dimensional Lie algebra to be noetherian. To address this problem, we answer a 23-year-old question of Carolyn Dean and Lance Small; namely, we prove that the universal enveloping algebra of the Witt (or centerless Virasoro) algebra is not noetherian. To show this, we prove our main result: the universal enveloping algebra of the positive part of the Witt algebra is not noetherian. We employ algebro-geometric techniques from the first author's classification of (non…
Rota-Baxter associative algebras and Rota-Baxter Lie algebras are both important in mathematics and mathematical physics, with the former a basic structure in quantum field renormalization and the latter a operator form of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. An outstanding problem posed by Gubarev is to determine whether there is a Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem for the universal enveloping Rota-Baxter associative algebra of a Rota-Baxter Lie algebra. This paper resolves this problem positively, working with operated algebras and applying the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases.
Let H be a Hopf algebra and let B be a Koszul H-module algebra. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a filtered algebra to be a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt (PBW) deformation of the smash product algebra B#H. Many examples of these deformations are given.
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>3$, and $\ggg$ the $p$-dimensional Witt algebra over $\mathbb{F}$. Let $\N$ be the nilpotent cone of $\ggg$. Explicit description of $\N$ is given, so that the conjugacy classes of Borel subalgebras of $\ggg$ under the automorphism group are determined. In contrast with only one conjugacy class of Borel subalgebras in a classical simple Lie algebra, there are two conjugacy classes of Borel subalgebras in $\ggg$. The representatives of conjugacy classes of Borel subalgebras, i.e., the so-called standard Borel subalgebras, ar…
The homogeneous Rota-Baxter operators on the Witt and Virasoro algebras are classified. As applications, the induced solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation and the induced pre-Lie and PostLie algebra structures are obtained.
Braverman and Gaitsgory gave necessary and sufficient conditions for a nonhomogeneous quadratic algebra to satisfy the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt property when its homogeneous version is Koszul. We widen their viewpoint and consider a quotient of an algebra that is free over some (not necessarily semisimple) subalgebra. We show that their theorem holds under a weaker hypothesis: We require the homogeneous version of the nonhomogeneous quadratic algebra to be the skew group algebra (semidirect product algebra) of a finite group acting on a Koszul algebra, obtaining conditions for the Poincare-Birkh…
Lie algebras formed via semi-direct sums of the Witt algebra $\text{Der}(\mathbb{C}[t,t^{-1}])$ and its modules have become increasingly prominent in both physics and mathematics in recent years. In this paper, we complete the study of (Leibniz) central extensions, derivations and automorphisms of the Lie algebras formed from the semi-direct sum of the Witt algebra and its indecomposable intermediate series modules (that is, graded modules with one-dimensional graded components). Our techniques exploit the internal grading of the Witt algebra, which can be applied to a wider class of graded Li…
A classical theorem due to Brauer and Witt implies that every simple component of the rational group algebra QG of a finite group G is Brauer equivalent to a cyclotomic algebra containing Q in its centre. The precise description of this cyclotomic algebra is not available from the proof of the Brauer-Witt theorem and it has been a problem of interest to determine the same in view of its central role in the study of central simple algebras. In this paper, an approach using Shoda pair theory is described, which is quite efficient from computational perspective.
Working over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 3, we calculate the orbit closures in the Witt algebra W under the action of its automorphism group G. We also outline how the same techniques can be used to determine closures of orbits of all heights except p-1 (in which case we only obtain a conditional statement) in the dual space W^* under the induced action of G. As a corollary we prove that the algebra of invariants k[W^*]^G is trivial.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be the $p$-dimensional Witt algebra over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>3$. Let $\mathscr{N}={x\in\ggg\mid x^{[p]}=0}$ be the nilpotent variety of $\mathfrak{g}$, and $\mathscr{C}(\mathscr{N}):=\{(x,y)\in \mathscr{N}\times\mathscr{N}\mid [x,y]=0\}$ the nilpotent commuting variety of $\mathfrak{g}$. As an analogue of Premet's result in the case of classical Lie algebras [A. Premet, Nilpotent commuting varieties of reductive Lie algebras. Invent. Math., 154, 653-683, 2003.], we show that the variety $\mathscr{C}(\mathscr{N})$ is reducible and equidimens…
Recently, Bocklandt proved a conjecture by Van den Bergh in its graded version, stating that a graded quiver algebra (with relations) which is Calabi-Yau of dimension 3 is defined from a homogeneous potential W. In this paper, we prove that if we add to W any potential of smaller degree, we get a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt deformation of A. Such PBW deformations are Calabi-Yau and are characterised among all the PBW deformations of A. Various examples are presented.
By considering non-trivial global deformations of the Witt (and the Virasoro) algebra given by geometric constructions it is shown that, despite their infinitesimal and formal rigidity, they are globally not rigid. This shows the need of a clear indication of the type of deformations considered. The families appearing are constructed as families of algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. They show up in a natural way in the global operator approach to the quantization of two-dimensional conformal field theory. In addition, a proof of the infinitesimal and formal rigidity of the Witt algebra is pre…
In this paper we develop a novel approach to Witt vector rings and to the (relative) de Rham Witt complex. We do this in the generality of arbitrary commutative algebras and arbitrary truncation sets. In our construction of Witt vector rings the ring structure is obvious and there is no need for universal polynomials. Moreover a natural generalization of the construction easily leads to the relative de Rham Witt complex. Our approach is based on the use of free or at least torsion free presentations of a given commutative ring $R$ and it is an important fact that the resulting objects are inde…
By elementary and direct calculations the vanishing of the (algebraic) second Lie algebra cohomology of the Witt and the Virasoro algebra with values in the adjoint module is shown. This yields infinitesimal and formal rigidity or these algebras. The first (and up to now only) proof of this important result was given 1989 by Fialowski in an unpublished note. It is based on cumbersome calculations. Compared to the original proof the presented one is quite elegant and considerably simpler.
A proof of the vanishing of the third cohomology group of the Witt algebra with values in the adjoint module is given. Moreover, we provide a sketch of the proof of the one-dimensionality of the third cohomology group of the Virasoro algebra with values in the adjoint module. The proofs given in the present article are completely algebraic and independent of any underlying topology. They are a generalization of the ones provided by Schlichenmaier, who proved the vanishing of the second cohomology group of the Witt and the Virasoro algebra by using purely algebraic methods. In the case of the t…
