In this work we consider a stochastic version of the Primitive Equations (PEs) of the ocean and the atmosphere and establish the existence and uniqueness of pathwise, strong solutions. The analysis employs novel techniques in contrast to previous works in order to handle a general class of nonlinear noise structures and to allow for physically relevant boundary conditions. The proof relies on Cauchy estimates, stopping time arguments and anisotropic estimates.
We study the stochastic effect on the three-dimensional inviscid primitive equations (PEs, also called the hydrostatic Euler equations). Specifically, we consider a larger class of noises than multiplicative noises, and work in the analytic function space due to the ill-posedness in Sobolev spaces of PEs without horizontal viscosity. Under proper conditions, we prove the local existence of martingale solutions and pathwise uniqueness. By adding vertical viscosity, i.e., considering the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations, we can relax the restriction on initial conditions to be only analytic i…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of both local martingale and local pathwise solutions of an abstract nonlinear stochastic evolution system. The primary application of this abstract framework is to infer the local existence of strong, pathwise solutions to the 3D primitive equations of the oceans and atmosphere forced by a nonlinear multiplicative white noise. Instead of developing our results specifically for the 3D primitive equations we choose to develop them in a slightly abstract framework which covers many related forms of these equations (atmosphere, oceans, coupled atmosphere-…
Existence and uniqueness of solutions to the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative spatial noise is studied. In the spirit of pathwise regularization by noise, we show that a perturbation by a sufficiently irregular continuous path establish wellposedness of such equations, even when the drift and diffusion coefficients are given as generalized functions or distributions. In addition we prove regularity of the averaged field associated to a Lévy fractional stable motion, and use this as an example of a perturbation regularizing the multiplicative stochastic heat equation.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of pathwise strong solutions to the stochastic 3D primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity and diffusivity driven by transport noise on a cylindrical domain $M=(-h,0) \times G$, $G\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ bounded and smooth, with the physical Dirichlet boundary conditions on the lateral part of the boundary. Compared to the deterministic case where the uniqueness of $z$-weak solutions holds in $L^2$, more regular initial data are necessary to establish uniqueness in the anisotropic space $H^1_z L^2_{xy}$ so that the existence of local pathwise s…

We study pathwise regularization by noise for equations on the plane in the spirit of the framework outlined by Catellier and Gubinelli (Stochastic Process. Appl., 2016). To this end, we extend the notion of non-linear Young equations to a two dimensional domain and prove existence and uniqueness of such equations. This concept is then used in order to prove regularization by noise for stochastic equations on the plane. The statement of regularization by noise is formulated in terms of the regularity of the local time associated to the perturbing stochastic field. For this, we provide two quan…
We consider nonlinear parabolic evolution equations of the form $\partial_{t}u=F(t,x,Du,D^{2}u) $, subject to noise of the form $H(x,Du) \circ dB$ where $H$ is linear in $Du$ and $\circ dB$ denotes the Stratonovich differential of a multidimensional Brownian motion. Motivated by the essentially pathwise results of [Lions, P.-L. and Souganidis, P.E.; Fully nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations. C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math. 326 (1998), no. 9] we propose the use of rough path analysis [Lyons, T. J.; Differential equations driven by rough signals. Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 14 (…
In this paper, we show the existence and uniqueness of the stationary solution $u(t,ω)$ and stationary point $Y(ω)$ of the differentiable random dynamical system $U:R\times L^2[0,1]\times Ω\to L^2[0,1]$ generated by the stochastic Burgers equation with $L^2[0,1]$-noise and large viscosity, especially, $u(t,ω)=U(t,Y(ω),ω)=Y(θ(t,ω))$, and $Y(ω) \in H^1[0,1]$ is the unique solution of the following equation in $L^2[0,1]$ $$ Y(ω)={1/2}\int_{-\infty}^0T_ν(-s)\frac{\partial (Y(θ(s,ω))^2}{\partial x}ds +\int_{-\infty}^0T_ν(-s)dW_s(ω), $$ where $θ$ is the group of $P$-preserving ergodic transformation…
We present two new sharp regularity results (regularizing effect and propagation of regularity) for viscosity solutions of uniformly convex space homogeneous Hamilton-Jacobi equations. In turn, these estimates yield new intermittent stochastic regularization results for pathwise (stochastic) viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations with uniformly convex Hamiltonians and rough multiplicative time dependence. Finally, we use the intermittent estimates to study the long time behavior of the pathwise (stochastic) viscosity solutions of convex Hamilton-Jacobi equations.
We prove pathwise uniqueness for an abstract stochastic reaction-diffusion equation in Banach spaces. The drift contains a bounded Hölder term; in spite of this, due to the space-time white noise it is possible to prove pathwise uniqueness. The proof is based on a detailed analysis of the associated Kolmogorov equation. The model includes examples not covered by the previous works based on Hilbert spaces or concrete SPDEs.
We study in this article the stochastic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation driven by a multiplicative noise. We establish, in space dimensions two and three the global existence of martingale solutions, and in space dimension two the global pathwise uniqueness and the existence of pathwise solutions. New methods are employed in the passage to the limit on a special type of boundary conditions and in the verification of the pathwise uniqueness of martingale solutions with a lack of regularity, where both difficulties arise due to the partly hyperbolic feature of the model.
This paper introduces the path derivatives, in the spirit of Dupire's functional Itô calculus, for the controlled paths in the rough path theory with possibly non-geometric rough paths. The theory allows us to deal with rough integration and rough PDEs in the same manner as standard stochastic calculus. We next study rough PDEs with coefficients depending on the rough path itself, which corresponds to stochastic PDEs with random coefficients. Such coefficients is less regular in the time variable and is not covered in the existing literature. The results are useful for studying viscosity solut…
The main goal of this work is to relate weak and pathwise mild solutions for parabolic quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). Extending in a suitable way techniques from the theory of nonautonomous semilinear SPDEs to the quasilinear case, we prove the equivalence of these two solution concepts.
We consider a linear elliptic system in divergence form with random coefficients and study the random fluctuations of large-scale averages of the field and the flux of the solution operator. In the context of the random conductance model, we developed in a previous work a theory of fluctuations based on the notion of homogenization commutator: we proved that the two-scale expansion of this special quantity is accurate at leading order in the fluctuation scaling when averaged on large scales (as opposed to the two-scale expansion of the solution operator taken separately) and that the large-sca…
We introduce the notion of pathwise entropy solutions for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with non-isotropic nonlinearity and fluxes with rough time dependence and prove their well-posedness. In the case of Brownian noise and periodic boundary conditions, we prove that the pathwise entropy solutions converge to their spatial average and provide an estimate on the rate of convergence. The third main result of the paper is a new regularization result in the spirit of averaging lemmata. This work extends both the framework of pathwise entropy solutions for stochastic scalar c…
We develop a pathwise theory for scalar conservation laws with quasilinear multiplicative rough path dependence, a special case being stochastic conservation laws with quasilinear stochastic dependence. We introduce the notion of pathwise stochastic entropy solutions, which is closed with the local uniform limits of paths, and prove that it is well posed, i.e., we establish existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence, in the form of pathwise $L^1$-contraction, as well as some explicit estimates. Our approach is motivated by the theory of stochastic viscosity solutions, which was introduced…
Using a rough path formulation, we investigate existence, uniqueness and regularity for the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with Stratonovich noise on the one dimensional torus. As a main result we show the continuity of the so-called Itô-Lyons map in the energy spaces $L^\infty(0,T;H^k)\cap L^2(0,T;H^{k+1})$ for any $k\ge1$. The proof proceeds in two steps. First, based on an energy estimate in the aforementioned space together with a compactness argument we prove existence of a unique solution, implying the continuous dependence in a weaker norm. This is then strengthened in the …
We consider linear elliptic equations in divergence form with stationary random coefficients of integrable correlations. We characterize the fluctuations of a macroscopic observable of a solution to relative order $\frac{d}{2}$, where $d$ is the spatial dimension; the fluctuations turn out to be Gaussian. As for previous work on the leading order, this higher-order characterization relies on a pathwise proximity of the macroscopic fluctuations of a general solution to those of the (higher-order) correctors, via a (higher-order) two-scale expansion injected into the homogenization commutator, t…
We continue the development of the theory of pathwise stochastic entropy solutions for scalar conservation laws in $\R^N$ with quasilinear multiplicative ''rough path'' dependence by considering inhomogeneous fluxes and a single rough path like, for example, a Brownian motion. Following our previous note where we considered spatially independent fluxes, we introduce the notion of pathwise stochastic entropy solutions and prove that it is well posed, that is we establish existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence in the form of a (pathwise) $L^1$-contraction. Our approach is motivated by t…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of local strong pathwise solutions to the stochastic Boussinesq equations with partial diffusion term forced by multiplicative noise on the torus in $\mathbb{R}^{d},d=2,3$. The solution is strong in both PDE and probabilistic sense. In the two dimensional case, we prove the global existence of strong solutions to the Boussinesq equations forced by additive noise using a suitable stochastic analogue of a logarithmic Gronwall's lemma. After the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are established, the large deviation principle (LDP) is prov…
We study the long-time behavior and the regularity of pathwise entropy solutions to stochastic scalar conservation laws with random in time spatially homogeneous fluxes and periodic initial data. We prove that the solutions converge to their spatial average, which is the unique invariant measure, and provide a rate of convergence, the latter being new even in the deterministic case for dimensions higher than two. The main tool is a new regularization result in the spirit of averaging lemmata for scalar conservation laws, which, in particular, implies a regularization by noise-type result for p…
In this article we are concerned with the study of the existence and uniqueness of pathwise mild solutions to evolutions equations driven by a Hölder continuous function with Hölder exponent in $(1/3,1/2)$. Our stochastic integral is a generalization of the well-known Young integral. To be more precise, the integral is defined by using a fractional integration by parts formula and it involves a tensor for which we need to formulate a new equation. From this it turns out that we have to solve a system consisting in a path and an area equations. In this paper we prove the existence of a unique l…
We survey some of our recent results on existence, uniqueness and regularity of function solutions to parabolic and transport type partial differential equations driven by non-differentiable noises. When applied pathwise to random situations, they provide corresponding statements for stochastic partial differential equations driven by fractional noises of sufficiently high regularity order. The approach is based on semigroup theory.
A mild formulation for stochastic parabolic Anderson model with time-homogeneous Gaussian potential suggests a way of defining a solution to obtain its optimal regularity. Two different interpretations in the equation or in the mild formulation are possible with usual pathwise product and the Wick product: the usual pathwise interpretation is mainly discussed. We emphasize that a modified version of parabolic Schauder estimates is a key idea for the existence and uniqueness of a mild solution. In particular, the mild formulation is crucial to investigate a relation between the equation with us…
Combining fractional calculus and the Rough Path Theory we study the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions to evolutions equations driven by a Hölder continuous function with Hölder exponent in $(1/3,1/2)$. Our stochastic integral is in some sense a generalization of the well-known Young integral and can be defined independently of the initial condition. Similar to the Rough Path Theory we establish a second variable which is given, roughly speaking, by a tensor product. It is then necessary to formulate a second equation for this new variable, and we do in a mild sense. The crucial point…

We consider stochastic evolution equations in Hilbert spaces with merely measurable and locally bounded drift term $B$ and cylindrical Wiener noise. We prove pathwise (hence strong) uniqueness in the class of global solutions. This paper extends our previous paper (Da Prato, Flandoli, Priola and M. Rockner, Annals of Prob., published online in 2012) which generalized Veretennikov's fundamental result to infinite dimensions assuming boundedness of the drift term. As in our previous paper pathwise uniqueness holds for a large class, but not for every initial condition. We also include an applica…
In this paper, we consider the stochastic Boussinesq equations on $\mathbb T^3$ with transport noise and rough initial data. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of the local pathwise solution with initial data in $L^p(Ω;L^p)$ for $p>5$. By assuming additional smallness on the initial data and the noise, we establish the global existence of the pathwise solution.
Using the Maslowski and Seidler method, the existence of invariant measure for 2-dimensional stochastic Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equations with multiplicative noise is proved in state space $L_x^2\times H^1$, working with the weak topology. Also, the existence of global pathwise solution is investigated using the stochastic compactness argument.
We show the relative energy inequality for the compressible Navier-Stokes system driven by a stochastic forcing. As a corollary, we prove the weak-strong uniqueness property (pathwise and in law) and convergence of weak solutions in the inviscid-incompressible limit. In particular, we establish a Yamada-Watanabe type result in the context of the compressible Navier-Stokes system, that is, pathwise weak--strong uniqueness implies weak--strong uniqueness in law.
We study the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations subject to stochastic forcing. We develop a concept of dissipative martingale solutions, where the nonlinear terms are described by generalised Young measures. We construct these solutions as the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions to the corresponding stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. This requires a refined stochastic compactness method incorporating the generalised Young measures. Our solutions satisfy a form of the energy inequality which gives rise to a weak-strong uniqueness result (pathwise and in law). A dissipative mar…
The bidomain system of degenerate reaction-diffusion equations is a well-established spatial model of electrical activity in cardiac tissue, with "reaction" linked to the cellular action potential and "diffusion" representing current flow between cells. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a "stochastically forced" version of the bidomain model that accounts for various random effects. We establish the existence of martingale (probabilistic weak) solutions to the stochastic bidomain model. The result is proved by means of an auxiliary nondegenerate system and the Faedo-Galerkin method. To…
This work introduces a pathwise notion of solution for the stochastic Burgers equation, in particular, our approach encompasses the Cole-Hopf solution. The developments are based on regularization arguments from the theory of distributions.
