In this paper, we show the existence and uniqueness of the stationary solution $u(t,ω)$ and stationary point $Y(ω)$ of the differentiable random dynamical system $U:R\times L^2[0,1]\times Ω\to L^2[0,1]$ generated by the stochastic Burgers equation with $L^2[0,1]$-noise and large viscosity, especially, $u(t,ω)=U(t,Y(ω),ω)=Y(θ(t,ω))$, and $Y(ω) \in H^1[0,1]$ is the unique solution of the following equation in $L^2[0,1]$
$$
Y(ω)={1/2}\int_{-\infty}^0T_ν(-s)\frac{\partial (Y(θ(s,ω))^2}{\partial x}ds +\int_{-\infty}^0T_ν(-s)dW_s(ω),
$$ where $θ$ is the group of $P$-preserving ergodic transformation on the canonical probability pace $(Ω, {\cal F}, P)$ such that $θ(t,ω)(s)=W(t+s)-W(t)$.
This work introduces a pathwise notion of solution for the stochastic Burgers equation, in particular, our approach encompasses the Cole-Hopf solution. The developments are based on regularization arguments from the theory of distributions.
This paper studies forward and backward versions of random Burgers equation (RBE) with stochastic coefficients. Firstly, the celebrated Cole-Hopf transformation reduces the forward RBE to a forward random heat equation (RHE) that can be treated pathwise. Next we provide a connection between the backward Burgers equation and a system of FBSDEs. Exploiting this connection, we derive a generalization of the Cole-Hopf transformation which links the backward RBE with the backward RHE and investigate the range of its applicability. Stochastic Feynman-Kac representations for the solutions are provide…
Motivated by the study of the metastable stochastic Ising model at subcritical temperature and in the limit of a vanishing magnetic field, we extend the notion of ($κ$, $λ$)-capacities between sets, as well as the associated notion of soft-measures, to the case of overlapping sets. We recover their essential properties, sometimes in a stronger form or in a simpler way, relying on weaker hypotheses. These properties allow to write the main quantities associated with reversible metastable dynamics, e.g. asymptotic transition and relaxation times, in terms of objects that are associated with two-…
We consider the stationary O'Connell-Yor model of semi-discrete directed polymers in a Brownian environment in the intermediate disorder regime and show convergence of the increments of the log-partition function to the energy solutions of the stochastic Burgers equation. The proof does not rely on the Cole-Hopf transform and avoids the use of spectral gap estimates for the discrete model. The key technical argument is a second-order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle.
We study a generalized 1d periodic SPDE of Burgers type: $$ \partial_t u =- A^θu + \partial_x u^2 + A^{θ/2} ξ$$ where $θ> 1/2$, $-A$ is the 1d Laplacian, $ξ$ is a space-time white noise and the initial condition $u_0$ is taken to be (space) white noise. We introduce a notion of weak solution for this equation in the stationary setting. For these solutions we point out how the noise provide a regularizing effect allowing to prove existence and suitable estimates when $θ>1/2$. When $θ>5/4$ we obtain pathwise uniqueness. We discuss the use of the same method to study different approximations of t…
Consider the viscous Burgers equation on a bounded interval with inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Following the variational framework introduced by Bertini-De Sole-Gabrielli-Jona-Lasinio-Landim C, we analyze a Lyapunov functional for such equation which gives the large deviations asymptotics of a stochastic interacting particles model associated to the Burgers equation. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of this energy functional, whose minimizer is given by the unique stationary solution, as the length of the interval diverges. We focus on boundary data corresponding to a standing…
We prove that the stochastic Burgers equation on $\mathbf{R}^{d}$, $d<4$, forced by gradient noise that is white in time and smooth in space, admits spacetime-stationary solutions. These solutions are thus the gradients of solutions to the KPZ equation on $\mathbf{R}^{d}$ with stationary gradients. The proof works by proving tightness of the time-averaged laws of the solutions in an appropriate weighted space.
We define a notion of a viscous shock solution of the stochastic Burgers equation that connects "top" and "bottom" spatially stationary solutions of the same equation. Such shocks generally travel in space, but we show that they admit time-invariant measures when viewed in their own reference frames. Under such a measure, the viscous shock is a deterministic function of the bottom and top solutions and the shock location. However, the measure of the bottom and top solutions must be tilted to account for the change of reference frame. We also show a convergence result to these stationary shock …
We construct space-time stationary solutions of the 1D Burgers equation with random forcing in the absence of periodicity or any other compactness assumptions. More precisely, for the forcing given by a homogeneous Poissonian point field in space-time we prove that there is a unique global solution with any prescribed average velocity. These global solutions serve as one-point random attractors for the infinite-dimensional dynamical system associated to solutions to the Cauchy problem. The probability distribution of the global solutions defines a stationary distribution for the corresponding …
Self-similarity of Burgers' equation with some stochastic advection is studied. In self-similar variables a stationary solution is constructed which establishes the existence of a stochastically self-similar solution for the stochastic Burgers' equation. The analysis assumes that the stochastic coefficient of advection is transformed to a white noise in the self-similar variables. Furthermore, by a diffusion approximation, the long time convergence to the self-similar solution is proved in the sense of distribution.
We consider a space-continuous and time-discrete polymer model for positive temperature and the associated zero temperature model of last passage percolation type. In our previous work, we constructed and studied infinite-volume polymer measures and one-sided infinite minimizers for the associated variational principle, and used these objects for the study of global stationary solutions of the Burgers equation with positive or zero viscosity and random kick forcing, on the entire real line. In this paper, we prove that in the zero temperature limit, the infinite-volume polymer measures concent…
We review the formulation of the stochastic Burgers equation as a martingale problem. One way of understanding the difficulty in making sense of the equation is to note that it is a stochastic PDE with distributional drift, so we first review how to construct finite-dimensional diffusions with distributional drift. We then present the uniqueness result for the stationary martingale problem of [Gubinelli, Perkowski 2016], but we mainly emphasize the heuristic derivation and also we include a (very simple) extension of [Gubinelli, Perkowski 2016] to a non-stationary regime.
We analyze the one-dimensional periodic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the language of paracontrolled distributions, giving an alternative viewpoint on the seminal results of Hairer. Apart from deriving a basic existence and uniqueness result for paracontrolled solutions to the KPZ equation we perform a thorough study of some related problems. We rigorously prove the links between KPZ equation, stochastic Burgers equation, and (linear) stochastic heat equation and also the existence of solutions starting from quite irregular initial conditions. We also build a partial link between energy solu…
We introduce a family of stationary coupled Sasamoto-Spohn models and show that, in the weakly asymmetric regime, they converge to the energy solution of coupled Burgers equations. Moreover, we show that any system of coupled Burgers equations satisfying the so-called trilinear condition ensuring stationarity can be obtained as the scaling limit of a suitable system of coupled Sasamoto-Spohn models. The core of our proof, which avoids the use of spectral gap estimates, consists in a second order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle for the discrete model.
We investigate the longtime behavior of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with differential operators that depend on time and the underlying probability space. In particular, we consider stochastic parabolic evolution problems in Banach spaces with additive noise and prove the existence of random exponential attractors. These are compact random sets of finite fractal dimension that contain the global random attractor and are attracting at an exponential rate. In order to apply the framework of random dynamical systems, we use the concept of pathwise mild solutions. This approac…
We consider linear elliptic equations in divergence form with stationary random coefficients of integrable correlations. We characterize the fluctuations of a macroscopic observable of a solution to relative order $\frac{d}{2}$, where $d$ is the spatial dimension; the fluctuations turn out to be Gaussian. As for previous work on the leading order, this higher-order characterization relies on a pathwise proximity of the macroscopic fluctuations of a general solution to those of the (higher-order) correctors, via a (higher-order) two-scale expansion injected into the homogenization commutator, t…
We prove that the stochastic Burgers equation, which is related to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang/KPZ equation via weak derivative, is a "critical" scaling limit for density fluctuations for a family of non-integrable and non-stationary interacting particle systems. The models we consider cannot be linearized by a microscopic Cole-Hopf transform or studied directly by the existing energy solution theory of Goncalves-Jara '14. We develop a novel method based on comparison to stationary models, a technique that has not yet been applied to universality of the KPZ equation and nontrivially expands the se…
The first goal of this paper is to prove multiple asymptotic results for a time-discrete and space-continuous polymer model of a random walk in a random potential. These results include: existence of deterministic free energy density in the infinite volume limit for every fixed asymptotic slope; concentration inequalities for free energy implying a bound on its fluctuation exponent; straightness estimates implying a bound on the transversal fluctuation exponent. The culmination of this program is almost sure existence and uniqueness of polymer measures on one-sided infinite paths with given en…
In this note, we study an infinite reaction network called the stochastic Becker-Döring process, a sub-class of the general coagulation-fragmentation models. We prove pathwise convergence of the process towards the deterministic Becker-Döring equations which improves classical tightness-based results. Also, we show by studying the asymptotic behavior of the stationary distribution, that the phase transition property of the deterministic model is also present in the finite stochastic model. Such results might be interpreted closed to the so-called gelling phenomena in coagulation models. We end…
In this paper, we study the existence of random periodic solutions for semilinear stochastic differential equations. We identify these as the solutions of coupled forward-backward infinite horizon stochastic integral equations in general cases. We then use the argument of the relative compactness of Wiener-Sobolev spaces in $C^0([0, T], L^2(Ω))$ and generalized Schauder's fixed point theorem to prove the existence of a solution of the coupled stochastic forward-backward infinite horizon integral equations. The condition on $F$ is then further weakened by applying the coupling method of forward…
The paper addresses probabilistic aspects of the KPZ equation and stochastic Burgers equation by providing a solution theory that builds on the energy solution theory Goncalves-Jara '14, Gubinelli-Jara '13, Gubinelli-Perkowski '18, Gubinelli-Perkowski '20. The perspective we adopt is to study the stochastic Burgers equation by writing its solution as a probabilistic solution Gubinelli-Perkowski '17 plus a term that can be studied with deterministic PDE considerations. One motivation is universality of KPZ and stochastic Burgers equations for a certain class of stochastic PDE growth models, fir…
We are concerned about the averaging principle for the stochastic Burgers equation with slow-fast time scale. This slow-fast system is driven by Lévy processes. Under some appropriate conditions, we show that the slow component of this system strongly converges to a limit, which is characterized by the solution of stochastic Burgers equation whose coefficients are averaged with respect to the stationary measure of the fast-varying jump-diffusion. To illustrate our theoretical result, we provide some numerical simulations.
We consider the fluctuation fields of multi-species weakly-asymmetric zero-range interacting particle systems in one dimension, where the mass density of each species is conserved. Although such fields have been studied in systems with a single species, the multi-species setting is much less understood. Among other results, we show that, when the system starts from stationary states, with a particular property, the scaling limits of the multi-species fluctuation fields, seen in a characteristic traveling frame, solve a coupled Burgers SPDE, which is a formal spatial gradient of a coupled KPZ e…
We introduce what we call the second-order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle, which allows to replace local functionals of a conservative, one-dimensional stochastic process by a possibly nonlinear function of the conserved quantity. This replacement opens the way to obtain nonlinear stochastic evolutions as the limit of the fluctuations of the conserved quantity around stationary states. As an application of this second-order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle, we introduce the notion of energy solutions of the KPZ and stochastic Burgers equations. Under minimal assumptions, we prove that the density fluctuat…
We consider the stochastic heat equation $\partial_tZ= \partial_x^2 Z - Z \dot W$ on the real line, where $\dot W$ is space-time white noise. $h(t,x)=-\log Z(t,x)$ is interpreted as a solution of the KPZ equation, and $u(t,x)=\partial_x h(t,x)$ as a solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. We take $Z(0,x)=\exp\{B(x)\}$ where $B(x)$ is a two-sided Brownian motion, corresponding to the stationary solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. We show that there exist $0< c_1\le c_2 <\infty$ such that $c_1t^{2/3}\le \Var (\log Z(t,x))\le c_2 t^{2/3}.$ Analogous results are obtained for some mom…
We consider a class of nearest-neighbor weakly asymmetric mass conservative particle systems evolving on $\mathbb{Z}$, which includes zero-range and types of exclusion processes, starting from a perturbation of a stationary state. When the weak asymmetry is of order $O(n^{-γ})$ for $1/2<γ\leq1$, we show that the scaling limit of the fluctuation field, as seen across process characteristics, is a generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. However, at the critical weak asymmetry when $γ=1/2$, we show that all limit points satisfy a martingale formulation which may be interpreted in terms of a stoch…
We investigate the stationary diffusion equation with a coefficient given by a (transformed) Lévy random field. Lévy random fields are constructed by smoothing Lévy noise fields with kernels from the Matérn class. We show that Lévy noise naturally extends Gaussian white noise within Minlos' theory of generalized random fields. Results on the distributional path spaces of Lévy noise are derived as well as the amount of smoothing to ensure such distributions become continuous paths. Given this, we derive results on the pathwise existence and measurability of solutions to the random boundary valu…

A continuous time mixed state branching process is constructed as the scaling limits of two-type Galton-Watson processes. The process can also be obtained by the pathwise unique solution to a stochastic equation system. From the stochastic equation system we derive the distribution of local jumps and the exponential ergodicity in Wasserstein-type distances of the transition semigroup is given. Meanwhile, we study immigration structures associated with the process and prove the existence of the stationary distribution of the process with immigration.
This article is a sequel to [M.Z.Z.1] aimed at completing the characterization of the pathwise local structure of solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see's) and stochastic partial differential equations (spde's) near stationary solutions. Stationary solution are viewed as random points in the infinite-dimensional state space, and the characterization is expressed in terms of the almost sure long-time behavior of trajectories of the equation in relation to the stationary solution. More specifically, we establish local stable manifold theorems for semilinear see's and spde's …
We use the notion of energy solutions of the stochastic Burgers equation to give a short proof of the Hairer-Quastel universality result for a class of stationary weakly asymmetric stochastic PDEs.
We continue the approach in Part I \cite{duchong19} to study stationary states of controlled differential equations driven by rough paths, using the framework of random dynamical systems and random attractors. Part II deals with driving paths of finite $ν$ - Hölder norms with $ν\in (\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{2})$ so that the integrals are interpreted in the Gubinelli sense for controlled rough paths. We prove sufficient conditions for the attractor to be a singleton, thus the pathwise convergence is in both pullback and forward senses.
The main objective of this work is to characterize the pathwise local structure of solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see's) and stochastic partial differential equations (spde's) near stationary solutions. Such characterization is realized through the long-term behavior of the solution field near stationary points. The analysis falls in two parts I, II. In Part I (this paper), we prove a general existence and compactness theorem for $C^k$-cocycles of semilinear see's and spde's. Our results cover a large class of semilinear see's as well as certain semilinear spde's with …
We provide a unified analytic approach to study stationary states of controlled differential equations driven by rough paths, using the framework of random dynamical systems and random attractors. Part I deals with driving paths of finite $p$-variations with $1 \leq p <2$ so that the integrals are interpreted in the Young sense. Our method helps to generalize recent results \cite{GAKLBSch2010}, \cite{ducGANSch18}, \cite{duchongcong18} on the existence of the global pullback attractors for the generated random dynamical systems. We also prove sufficient conditions for the attractor to be a sing…
We study the KPZ equation with a $1+1-$dimensional spacetime white noise, started at equilibrium, and give a different proof of the main result of \cite{bqs}, i.e., the variance of the solution at time $t$ is of order $t^{2/3}$. Instead of using a discrete approximation through the exclusion process and the second class particle, we utilize the connection to directed polymers in a random environment. Along the way, we show the annealed density of the stationary continuum directed polymer equals to the two-point covariance function of the stationary stochastic Burgers equation, confirming the p…
Considering the hydrodynamical limit of some interacting particle systems leads to hyperbolic differential equation for the conserved quantities, e.g. the inviscid Burgers equation for the simple exclusion process. The physical solutions of these partial differential equations develop discontinuities, called shocks. The microscopic structure of these shocks is of much interest and far from being well understood. We introduce a domain growth model in which we find a stationary (in time) product measure for the model, as seen from a defect tracer or second class particle, travelling with the sho…
This article presents a review of some old and new results on the long time behavior of reflected diffusions. First, we present a summary of prior results on construction, ergodicity and geometric ergodicity of reflected diffusions in the positive orthant $\mathbb{R}^d_+$, $d \in \mathbb{N}$. The geometric ergodicity results, although very general, usually give implicit convergence rates due to abstract couplings and Lyapunov functions used in obtaining them. This leads us to some recent results on an important subclass of reflected Brownian motions (RBM) (constant drift and diffusion coeffici…
