We consider the fluctuation fields of multi-species weakly-asymmetric zero-range interacting particle systems in one dimension, where the mass density of each species is conserved. Although such fields have been studied in systems with a single species, the multi-species setting is much less understood. Among other results, we show that, when the system starts from stationary states, with a particular property, the scaling limits of the multi-species fluctuation fields, seen in a characteristic traveling frame, solve a coupled Burgers SPDE, which is a formal spatial gradient of a coupled KPZ equation.
We consider the stochastic heat equation $\partial_tZ= \partial_x^2 Z - Z \dot W$ on the real line, where $\dot W$ is space-time white noise. $h(t,x)=-\log Z(t,x)$ is interpreted as a solution of the KPZ equation, and $u(t,x)=\partial_x h(t,x)$ as a solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. We take $Z(0,x)=\exp\{B(x)\}$ where $B(x)$ is a two-sided Brownian motion, corresponding to the stationary solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. We show that there exist $0< c_1\le c_2 <\infty$ such that $c_1t^{2/3}\le \Var (\log Z(t,x))\le c_2 t^{2/3}.$ Analogous results are obtained for some mom…
We analyze the one-dimensional periodic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the language of paracontrolled distributions, giving an alternative viewpoint on the seminal results of Hairer. Apart from deriving a basic existence and uniqueness result for paracontrolled solutions to the KPZ equation we perform a thorough study of some related problems. We rigorously prove the links between KPZ equation, stochastic Burgers equation, and (linear) stochastic heat equation and also the existence of solutions starting from quite irregular initial conditions. We also build a partial link between energy solu…
We prove that the stochastic Burgers equation, which is related to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang/KPZ equation via weak derivative, is a "critical" scaling limit for density fluctuations for a family of non-integrable and non-stationary interacting particle systems. The models we consider cannot be linearized by a microscopic Cole-Hopf transform or studied directly by the existing energy solution theory of Goncalves-Jara '14. We develop a novel method based on comparison to stationary models, a technique that has not yet been applied to universality of the KPZ equation and nontrivially expands the se…
In this review we discuss the weak KPZ universality conjecture for a class of 1-d systems whose dynamics conserves one or more quantities. As a prototype example for the former case, we will focus on weakly asymmetric simple exclusion processes, for which the density is preserved and the equilibrium fluctuations are shown to cross from the Edwards-Wilkinson universality class to the KPZ universality class. The crossover depends on the strength of the asymmetry. For the latter case, we will present an exclusion process with three species of particles, known as the ABC model, for which we aim to…
The paper addresses probabilistic aspects of the KPZ equation and stochastic Burgers equation by providing a solution theory that builds on the energy solution theory Goncalves-Jara '14, Gubinelli-Jara '13, Gubinelli-Perkowski '18, Gubinelli-Perkowski '20. The perspective we adopt is to study the stochastic Burgers equation by writing its solution as a probabilistic solution Gubinelli-Perkowski '17 plus a term that can be studied with deterministic PDE considerations. One motivation is universality of KPZ and stochastic Burgers equations for a certain class of stochastic PDE growth models, fir…
Let $X_t$ solve the multidimensional Itô's stochastic differential equations on $\R^d$ $$dX_t=b(t,X_t)dt+σ(t,X_t)dB_t$$ where $b:[0,\infty)\times\R^d\to\R^d$ is smooth in its two arguments, $σ:[0,\infty)\times\R^d\to\R^d\otimes\R^d$ is smooth with $σ(t,x)$ being invertible for all $(t,x)\in[0,\infty)\times\R^d$, $B_t$ is $d$-dimensional Brownian motion. It is shown that, associated to a Girsanov transformation, the stochastic process $$\int^t_0\langle(σ^{-1}b)(s,X_s),dB_t\rangle+\frac{1}{2}\int^t_0|σ^{-1}b|^2(s,X_s)ds$$ is a function of the arguments $t$ and $X_t$ (i.e., path-independent) if a…
We consider the stochastically forced Burgers equation with an emphasis on spatially rough driving noise. We show that the law of the process at a fixed time $t$, conditioned on no explosions, is absolutely continuous with respect to the stochastic heat equation obtained by removing the nonlinearity from the equation. This establishes a form of ellipticity in this infinite dimensional setting. The results follow from a recasting of the Girsanov Theorem to handle less spatially regular solutions while only proving absolute continuity at a fixed time and not on path-space. The results are proven…
We prove that the stochastic Burgers equation on $\mathbf{R}^{d}$, $d<4$, forced by gradient noise that is white in time and smooth in space, admits spacetime-stationary solutions. These solutions are thus the gradients of solutions to the KPZ equation on $\mathbf{R}^{d}$ with stationary gradients. The proof works by proving tightness of the time-averaged laws of the solutions in an appropriate weighted space.
We introduce what we call the second-order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle, which allows to replace local functionals of a conservative, one-dimensional stochastic process by a possibly nonlinear function of the conserved quantity. This replacement opens the way to obtain nonlinear stochastic evolutions as the limit of the fluctuations of the conserved quantity around stationary states. As an application of this second-order Boltzmann-Gibbs principle, we introduce the notion of energy solutions of the KPZ and stochastic Burgers equations. Under minimal assumptions, we prove that the density fluctuat…
We consider the corner growth dynamics on discrete bridges from $(0,0)$ to $(2N,0)$, or equivalently, the weakly asymmetric simple exclusion process with $N$ particles on $2N$ sites. We take an asymmetry of order $N^{-α}$ with $α\in (0,1)$ and provide a complete description of the asymptotic behaviour of this model. In particular, we show that the hydrodynamic limit of the density of particles is given by the inviscid Burgers equation with zero-flux boundary condition. When the interface starts from the flat initial profile, we show that KPZ fluctuations occur whenever $α\in (0,1/3]$. In the p…
We consider a class of nearest-neighbor weakly asymmetric mass conservative particle systems evolving on $\mathbb{Z}$, which includes zero-range and types of exclusion processes, starting from a perturbation of a stationary state. When the weak asymmetry is of order $O(n^{-γ})$ for $1/2<γ\leq1$, we show that the scaling limit of the fluctuation field, as seen across process characteristics, is a generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. However, at the critical weak asymmetry when $γ=1/2$, we show that all limit points satisfy a martingale formulation which may be interpreted in terms of a stoch…
We study the KPZ equation with a $1+1-$dimensional spacetime white noise, started at equilibrium, and give a different proof of the main result of \cite{bqs}, i.e., the variance of the solution at time $t$ is of order $t^{2/3}$. Instead of using a discrete approximation through the exclusion process and the second class particle, we utilize the connection to directed polymers in a random environment. Along the way, we show the annealed density of the stationary continuum directed polymer equals to the two-point covariance function of the stationary stochastic Burgers equation, confirming the p…
We consider stationary fluctuations for the multi-species zero range process with long jumps in one dimension, where the underlying transition probability kernel is $p(x) = c_+ |x|^{-1-α}$ if $x > 0$ and $= c_-|x|^{-1-α}$ if $x < 0$. Above, $c_{\pm} \geq 0, α> 0$ are parameters. We prove that for $0 < α< 3/2$, the density fluctuation fields converge to the stationary solution of a coupled fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, and for $α=3/2$, the limit points are concentrated on stationary energy solutions to a coupled fractional Burgers equation.
