We obtain convergent power series representations for Bloch waves in periodic high-contrast media. The material coefficient in the inclusions can be positive or negative. The small expansion parameter is the ratio of period cell width to wavelength, and the coefficient functions are solutions of the cell problems arising from formal asymptotic expansion. In the case of positive coefficient, the dispersion relation has an infinite sequence of branches, each represented by a convergent even power series whose leading term is a branch of the dispersion relation for the homogenized medium. In the negative case, there is a single branch.

The paper presents a globally convergent algorithm for solving coefficient inverse problems. Being rooted in the globally convergent numerical method (SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 31, No.1 (2008), pp. 478-509) for solving multidimensional coefficient inverse problems, it has two distinctive features: the new iterative and refinement procedures. These novelties enhance, sometimes significantly, both the spatial and contrast resolutions. The computational effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated in numerical experiments with two applied coefficient inverse problems: electromagnetic or ac…
This paper investigates the existence of almost periodic traveling fronts for Fisher-KPP lattice equations in one-dimensional almost periodic media. By the Lyapunov exponent of the linearized operator near the unstable steady state, we give sufficient condition of the existence of minimal speed of traveling fronts. Furthermore, it is showed that almost periodic traveling fronts share the same recurrence property as the structure of the media. As applications, we give some typical examples which have minimal speed, and the proof of this depends on dynamical system approach to almost periodic Sc…
We develop a convergent variational perturbation theory for the frequency of time-periodic solutions of nonlinear dynamical systems. The power of the theory is illustrated by applying it to the Duffing oscillator.
We consider the interior transmission problem associated with the scattering by an inhomogeneous (possibly anisotropic) highly oscillating periodic media. We show that, under appropriate assumptions, the solution of the interior transmission problem converges to the solution of a homogenized problem as the period goes to zero. Furthermore, we prove that the associated real transmission eigenvalues converge to transmission eigenvalues of the homogenized problem. Finally we show how to use the first transmission eigenvalue of the period media, which is measurable from the scattering data, to obt…
This paper establishes bounds on the homogenized surface tension for a heterogeneous Allen-Cahn energy functional in a periodic medium. The approach is based on relating the homogenized energy to a purely geometric variational problem involving the large scale behaviour of the signed distance function to a hyperplane in periodic media. Motivated by this, a homogenization result for the signed distance function to a hyperplane in both periodic and almost periodic media is proven.
Diffusion in inhomogeneous materials can be described by both the Fick and Fokker--Planck diffusion equations. Here, we study a mixed Fick and Fokker-Planck diffusion problem with coefficients rapidly oscillating both in space and time. We obtain macroscopic models performing the homogenization limit by means of the unfolding technique.
This paper is a follow-up of our earlier work [11] where a uniform exponential Anderson localization was proved for a class of deterministic (including quasi-periodic) Hamiltonians with the help of a variant of the KAM (Kolmogorov--Arnold--Moser) approach. Building on [11], we prove for the same class of operators a non-local variant of the Minami eigenvalue concentration estimate.
Starting from the wave equation for a medium with material properties that vary periodically, we study a system of recurrence relations that describe propagation of wave packets that oscillate on the microscale (i.e. on lengths of the order of the period of the medium) and vary slowly on the macroscale (i.e. on lengths that contain a large number of periods). The resulting equations contain a version of the geometric optics and the overall energy transport description for periodic media. We illustrate the developed asymptotic theory using the example of a point pulse propagating through a peri…
We investigate spectral properties of the Neumann Laplacian $\mathscr{A}_\varepsilon$ on a periodic unbounded domain $Ω_\varepsilon$ depending on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. The domain $Ω_\varepsilon$ is obtained by removing from $\mathbb{R}^n$ $m\in\mathbb{N}$ families of $\varepsilon$-periodically distributed small resonators. We prove that the spectrum of $\mathscr{A}_\varepsilon$ has at least $m$ gaps. The first $m$ gaps converge as $\varepsilon\to 0$ to some intervals whose location and lengths can be controlled by a suitable choice the resonators; other gaps (if any) go to infinit…
We analyse the behaviour of the spectrum of the system of Maxwell equations of electromagnetism, with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, subject to periodic boundary conditions on a "macroscopic" domain $(0,T)^d, T>0.$ We consider the case when the contrast between the values of the coefficients in different parts of their periodicity cell increases as the period of oscillations $η$ goes to zero. We show that the limit of the spectrum as $η\to0$ contains the spectrum of a "homogenised" system of equations that is solved by the limits of sequences of eigenfunctions of the original probl…
We study the essential spectra of formally self-adjoint elliptic systems on doubly periodic planar domains perturbed by a semi-infinite periodic row of foreign inclusions. We show that the essential spectrum of the problem consists of the essential spectrum of the purely periodic problem and another component, which is the union of the discrete spectra of model problems in the infinite perturbation strip; these model problems arise by an application of the partial Floquet-Bloch-Gelfand transform.
We prove ballistic transport of all orders, that is, $\lVert x^m\mathrm{e}^{-\mathrm{i}tH}ψ\rVert\asymp t^m$, for the following models: the adjacency matrix on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, the Laplace operator on $\mathbb{R}^d$, periodic Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$, and discrete periodic Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs. In all cases we give the exact expression of the limit of $\lVert x^m\mathrm{e}^{-\mathrm{i}tH}ψ\rVert/t^m$ as $t\to+\infty$. We then move to universal covers of finite graphs (these are infinite trees) and prove ballistic transport in mean when the potential is lifted …
In this paper, we present a new approach for the exact calculation of band structure in one-dimensional periodic media, such as photonic crystals and superlattices, based on the recently reported differential transfer matrix method (DTMM). The media analyzed in this paper can have arbitrary profile of refractive index. We derive a closed form dispersion equation using differential transfer matrix formalism, and simplify it under the assumptions of even symmetry and real-valued wavenumber. We also show that under normal incidence both TE and TM modes must have the same band structure. Several n…
We consider 1-D quasi-periodic Frenkel-Kontorova models. We study the existence of equilibria whose frequency (i.e. the inverse of the density of deposited material) is resonant with the frequencies of the substratum. We study perturbation theory for small potential. We show that there are perturbative expansions to all orders for the quasi-periodic equilibria with resonant frequencies. Under very general conditions, we show that there are at least two such perturbative expansions for equilibria for small values of the parameter. We also develop a dynamical interpretation of the equilibria in …
We develop an a-posteriori KAM theory for the equilibrium equations for quasi-periodic solutions in a quasi-periodic Frenkel-Kontorova model when the frequency of the solutions resonates with the frequencies of the substratum. The KAM theory we develop is very different both in the methods and in the conclusions from the more customary KAM theory for Hamiltonian systems or from the KAM theory in quasi-periodic media for solutions with frequencies which are Diophantine with respect to the frequencies of the media. The main difficulty is that we cannot use transformations (as in the Hamiltonian …
We consider transverse propagation of electromagnetic waves through a two-dimensional composite material containing a periodic rectangular array of circular cylinders. Propagation of waves is described by the Helmholtz equation with the continuity conditions the tangential components of the electric and magnetic fields on the boundaries of the cylinders. We assume that the dimensionless wave frequency $ν\ll 1$ that allows us to view the governing equation as a perturbation of the Laplace equation. We show that the eigenfunctions and the eigenvalues are even analytic functions of the magnitude …
We study numerically the "analyticity breakdown" transition in 1-dimensional quasi-periodic media. This transition corresponds physically to the transition between pinned down and sliding ground states. Mathematically, it corresponds to the solutions of a functional equation losing their analyticity properties. We implemented some recent numerical algorithms that are efficient and backed up by rigorous results so that we can compute with confidence even close to the breakdown. We have uncovered several phenomena that we believe deserve a theoretical explanation: A) The transition happens in a …
Periodic $2$nd order ordinary differential operators on $\R$ are known to have the edges of their spectra to occur only at the spectra of periodic and antiperiodic boundary value problems. The multi-dimensional analog of this property is false, as was shown in a 2007 paper by some of the authors of this article. However, one sometimes encounters the claims that in the case of a single periodicity (i.e., with respect to the lattice $\mathbb{Z}$), the $1D$ property still holds, and spectral edges occur at the periodic and anti-periodic spectra only. In this work we show that even in the simplest…
Using thermodynamic and variational principles we examine a basic phase field model for a mixture of two incompressible fluids in strongly perforated domains. With the help of the multiple scale method with drift and our recently introduced splitting strategy for Ginzburg-Landau/Cahn-Hilliard-type equations [Schmuck et al., Proc. R. Soc. A 468:3705-3724, 2012.], we rigorously derive an effective macroscopic phase field formulation under the assumption of periodic flow and a sufficiently large Péclet number. As for classical convection-diffusion problems, we obtain systematically diffusion-disp…
