In this revised version, the main results of the previous version have been generalized and improved. We also included various examples to illustrate the applications of this theory
We introduce a version of discrete Morse theory for posets. This theory studies the topology of the order complexes K(X) of h-regular posets X from the critical points of admissible matchings on X. Our approach is related to R. Forman's discrete Morse theory for CW-complexes and generalizes Forman and Chari's results on the face posets of regular CW-complexes. We also introduce a homological variant of the theory that can be used to study the topology of triangulable homology manifolds by means of their order triangulations.
We develop Morse-Bott theory on posets, generalizing both discrete Morse-Bott theory for regular complexes and Morse theory on posets. Moreover, we prove a Lusternik-Schnirelmann theorem for general matchings on posets, in particular, for Morse-Bott functions.
We introduce a Morse theory for posets of Bestvina-Brady type combining matchings and height functions. This theory generalizes Forman's discrete Morse theory for regular CW-complexes and extends previous results on Morse theory for $h$-regular posets to all finite posets. We also develop a relative version of Morse theory which allows us to compare the topology of a poset with that of a given subposet.
We prove a version of the fundamental theorems of Morse Theory in the setting of finite spaces or partially ordered sets. By using these results we extend Forman's discrete Morse theory to more general cell complexes and derive the Morse-Pitcher inequalities in the context of finite spaces.
We use discrete Morse theory to provide another proof of Bernini, Ferrari, and Steingrimson's formula for the Mobius function of the consecutive pattern poset. In addition, we are able to determine the homotopy type of this poset. Earlier, Bjorner determined the Mobius function and homotopy type of factor order and the results are remarkably similar to those in the pattern case. In his thesis, Willenbring used discrete Morse theory to give an illuminating proof of Bjorner's result. Since our proof parallels Willenbring's, we also consider the relationship between the two posets.
We describe the projectives in the category of functors from a graded poset to abelian groups. Based on this description we define a related condition, pseudo-projectivity, and we prove that this condition is enough for the vanishing of the derived direct limits. We apply this result to deduce a generalized version of a theorem of Whitehead for the pushout. The dual results for inverse limits are also considered. We present two methods to compute integral cohomology of posets, a local one a and a global one. The local method is applicable as soon as the sub-posets under each object possess cer…
In this paper, we define the homological Morse numbers of a filtered cell complex in terms of relative homology of nested filtration pieces, and derive inequalities relating these numbers to the Betti tables of the multi-parameter persistence modules of the considered filtration. Using the Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence we first obtain strong and weak Morse inequalities involving the above quantities, and then we improve the weak inequalities achieving a sharp lower bound for homological Morse numbers. Furthermore, we prove a sharp upper bound for homological Morse numbers, expressed again i…
Forman introduced discrete Morse theory as a tool for studying CW complexes by essentially collapsing them onto smaller, simpler-to-understand complexes of critical cells in [Fo]. Chari reformulated discrete Morse theory for regular cell complexes in terms of acyclic matchings on face posets in [Ch]. This paper addresses two questions: (1) under what conditions may several gradient paths in a discrete Morse function simultaneously be reversed to cancel several pairs of critical cells, to further collapse the complex, and (2) how to use lexicographically first reduced expressions for permutatio…
Homological algebra of modules over posets is developed, as closely parallel as possible to that of finitely generated modules over noetherian commutative rings, in the direction of finite presentations and resolutions. Centrally at issue is how to define finiteness to replace the noetherian hypothesis which fails. The tameness condition introduced for this purpose captures finiteness for variation in families of vector spaces indexed by posets in a way that is characterized equivalently by distinct topological, algebraic, combinatorial, and homological manifestations. Tameness serves both the…
We determine the Möbius function of the poset of compositions of an integer. In fact we give two proofs of this formula, one using an involution and one involving discrete Morse theory. The composition poset turns out to be intimately connected with subword order, whose Möbius function was determined by Björner. We show that using a generalization of subword order, we can obtain both Björner's results and our own as special cases.
The commutative and homological algebra of modules over posets is developed, as closely parallel as possible to the algebra of finitely generated modules over noetherian commutative rings, in the direction of finite presentations, primary decompositions, and resolutions. Interpreting this finiteness in the language of derived categories of subanalytically constructible sheaves proves two conjectures due to Kashiwara and Schapira concerning sheaves with microsupport in a given cone. The motivating case is persistent homology of arbitrary filtered topological spaces, especially the case of multi…
We apply the homomorphism complex construction to partially ordered sets, introducing a new topological construction based on the set of maximal chains in a graded poset. Our primary objects of study are distributive lattices, with special emphasis on finite products of chains. For the special case of a Boolean algebra, we observe that the corresponding homomorphism complex is isomorphic to the subcomplex of cubical cells in a permutahedron. Thus, this work can be interpreted as a generalization of the study of these complexes. We provide a detailed investigation when our poset is a product of…
We prove an infinite analogue of the main theorem of discrete Morse theory formulated in terms of discrete Morse matchings. Our theorem holds under the assumption that the given Morse matching induces finitely many equivalence classes of infinite directed simple paths. A homological version of the theorem is also given.
We present a method to compute integral cohomology of posets. This toolbox is applicable as soon as the sub-posets under each object possess certain structure. This is the case for simplicial complexes and simplex-like posets. The method is based on homological algebra arguments in the category of functors and on a spectral sequence built upon the poset. We show its relation to discrete Morse theory. As application we give an alternative proof of Webb's conjecture for saturated fusion systems and we compute the cohomology of Coxeter complexes for finite and infinite Coxeter groups.
Motivated by the work of Panina and her coauthors on cyclopermutohedron we study a poset whose elements correspond to equivalence classes of partitions of the set $\{1,\cdots, n+1\}$ up to cyclic permutations and orientation reversion. This poset is the face poset of a regular CW complex which we call bi-cyclopermutohedron and denote it by $\mathrm{QP}_{n+1}$. The complex $\mathrm{QP}_{n+1}$ contains subcomplexes homeomorphic to moduli space of certain planar polygons with $n+1$ sides up to isometries. In this article we find an optimal discrete Morse function on $\mathrm{QP}_{n+1}$ and use it…
Connection matrices are one of the central tools in Conley's approach to the study of dynamical systems, as they provide information on the existence of connecting orbits in Morse decompositions. They may be considered a generalisation of the boundary operator in the Morse complex in Morse theory. Their computability has recently been addressed by Harker, Mischaikow, and Spendlove in the context of lattice filtered chain complexes. In the current paper, we extend the recently introduced Conley theory for combinatorial vector and multivector fields on Lefschetz complexes by transferring the con…
This paper shows how to construct a discrete Morse function with a relatively small number of critical cells for the order complex of any finite poset with $\hat{0} $ and $\hat{1}$ from any lexicographic order on its maximal chains. Specifically, if we attach facets according to the lexicographic order on maximal chains, then each facet contributes at most one new face which is critical, and at most one Betti number changes; facets which do not change the homotopy type also do not contribute any critical faces. Dimensions of critical faces as well as a description of which facet attachments ch…
We study the homology of random Čech complexes generated by a homogeneous Poisson process. We focus on 'homological connectivity' - the stage where the random complex is dense enough, so that its homology "stabilizes" and becomes isomorphic to that of the underlying topological space. Our results form a comprehensive high-dimensional analogue of well-known phenomena related to connectivity in the Erdős-Rényi graph and random geometric graphs. We first prove that there is a sharp phase transition describing homological connectivity. Next, we analyze the behavior of the complex in the critical w…
We introduce the notion of a template for discrete Morse theory. Templates provide a memory efficient approach to the computation of homological invariants (e.g., homology, persistent homology, Conley complexes) of cell complexes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of templates in two settings: first, by computing the homology of certain cubical complexes which are homotopy equivalent to $\mathbb{S}^d$ for $1\leq d \leq 20$, and second, by computing Conley complexes and connection matrices for a collection of examples arising from a Conley-Morse theory on spaces of braids diagrams.
Incidence relations among the cells of a regular CW complex produce a poset-enriched category of entrance paths whose classifying space is homotopy-equivalent to that complex. We show here that each acyclic partial matching (in the sense of discrete Morse theory) on the cells corresponds precisely to a homotopy-preserving localization of the associated entrance path category. Restricting attention further to the full localized subcategory spanned by critical cells, we obtain the discrete flow category whose classifying space is also shown to lie in the homotopy class of the original CW complex…
This technical report introduces a novel approach to efficient computation in homological algebra over fields, with particular emphasis on computing the persistent homology of a filtered topological cell complex. The algorithms here presented rely on a novel relationship between discrete Morse theory, matroid theory, and classical matrix factorizations. We provide background, detail the algorithms, and benchmark the software implementation in the Eirene package.
We investigate combinatorial dynamical systems on simplicial complexes considered as {\em finite topological spaces}. Such systems arise in a natural way from sampling dynamics and may be used to reconstruct some features of the dynamics directly from the sample. We study the homological persistence of {\em Morse decompositions} of such systems, an important descriptor of the dynamics, as a tool for validating the reconstruction. Our framework can be viewed as a step toward extending the classical persistence theory to "vector cloud" data. We present experimental results on two numerical examp…
In this paper we expand the theory of weighted sheaves over posets, and use it to study the local homology of Artin groups. First, we use such theory to relate the homology of classical braid groups with the homology of certain independence complexes of graphs. Then, in the context of discrete Morse theory on weighted sheaves, we introduce a particular class of acyclic matchings. Explicit formulas for the homology of the corresponding Morse complexes are given, in terms of the ranks of the associated incidence matrices. We use such method to perform explicit computations for the new affine cas…
The author has already proven that the space $Δ(Π_n)/G$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension $n-3$ for all natural numbers $n\geq 3$ and all subgroups $G\subset S_1\times S_{n-1}$. We construct an $S_1\times S_{n-1}$-equivariant acyclic matching on $Δ(Π_n)$ together with a description of its critical simplices. This is also a more elementary approach to determining the number of spheres. We also develop new methods for Equivariant Discrete Morse Theory by adapting the Patchwork Theorem and poset maps with small fibers from Discrete Morse Theory.
This work is dedicated to some new exotic homological constructions associated with the different Morse-type inequalities for differential forms and vector fields. It contains also survey of ideas developed by the present author in 1986 for this goal.
We extend Björner's characterization of the face poset of finite CW complexes to a certain class of stratified spaces, called cylindrically normal stellar complexes. As a direct consequence, we obtain a discrete analogue of cell decompositions in smooth Morse theory, by using the classifying space model introduced in arXiv:1612.08429. As another application, we show that the exit-path simplicial set $\mathrm{Exit}(X)$ of a finite cylindrically normal CW stellar complex $X$ is a quasicategory.
We study $b'_1(M)$, the co-rank of the fundamental group of a smooth closed connected manifold $M$. We calculate this value for the direct product of manifolds. We characterize the set of all possible combinations of $b'_1(M)$ and the first Betti number $b_1(M)$ by explicitly constructing manifolds with any possible combination of $b'_1(M)$ and $b_1(M)$ in any given dimension. Finally, we apply our results to the topology of Morse form foliations. In particular, we construct a manifold $M$ and a Morse form $ω$ on it for any possible combination of $b'_1(M)$, $b_1(M)$, $m(ω)$, and $c(ω)$, where…
Let $X$ be 2n-dimensional compact manifold with a locally standard action of a compact torus. The orbit space $X/T$ is a manifold with corners. Suppose that all proper faces of $X/T$ are acyclic. In the paper we study the homological spectral sequence $E^*_{*,*}\Rightarrow H_*(X)$ corresponding to the filtration of $X$ by orbit types. When the free part of the action is not twisted, we describe the whole spectral sequence in terms of homology and combinatorial structure of $X/T$. In this case we describe the kernel and the cokernel of the natural map $k[X/T]/(l.s.o.p.) \to H_*(X)$, where $k[X/…
