The effect of K and K-Na substitution for Pb atoms in the rock salt lattice of PbTe was investigated to test a hypothesis for development of resonant states in the valence band that may enhance the thermoelectric power. We combined high temperature Hall-effect, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity measurements to show that K-Na co-doping do not form resonance states but2 can control the energy difference of the maxima of the two primary valence sub-bands in PbTe. This leads to an enhanced interband interaction with rising temperature and a significant rise in the thermoelectric figure of merit of p-type PbTe. The experimental data can be explained by a combination of a single and two-band model for the valence band of PbTe depending on hole density that varies in the range of 1-15 x 10^19 cm^-3.
The average and local structures of the (PbTe)1-x(PbS)x system of thermoelectric materials has been studied using the Rietveld and atomic pair distribution function (PDF) methods. Samples with 0:25 < x are macroscopically phase separated. Phase separation was suppressed in a quenched x = 0:5 sample which, nonetheless, exhibited a partial spinodal decomposition. The promising thermoelectric material with x = 0:16 showed intermediate behavior. Combining TEM and bulk scattering data suggests that the sample is a mixture of PbTe rich material and a partially spinodally decomposed phase similar to …
We present a first principles based model of electron-phonon scattering mechanisms and thermoelectric transport at the L and $Σ$ valleys in <200b>$p$-type PbTe, accounting for their thermally induced shifts. Our calculated values of all thermoelectric transport parameters at room temperature are in very good agreement with experiments for a wide range of doping concentrations. Scattering due to longitudinal optical phonons is the main scattering mechanism in $p$-type PbTe, while scattering due to transverse optical modes is the weakest. The L valleys contribute most to thermoelectric transport…
Unlike in many other semiconductors, the band gap of PbTe increases considerably with temperature. We compute the thermoelectric transport properties of n-type PbTe from first principles including the temperature variation of the electronic band structure. The calculated temperature dependence of the thermoelectric quantities of PbTe is in good agreement with previous experiments when the temperature changes of the band structure are accounted for. We also calculate the optimum band gap values which would maximize the thermoelectric figure of merit of n-type PbTe at various temperatures. We sh…
We find that Ag-interstitial ($Ag_I$) acts as an electron donor and plays an important role in Ag-excess doped polycrystalline PbTe thermoelectric materials. When Ag is heavily doped in PbTe, the neutral (Ag-Ag) dimer defect is formed at the Pb-site and the environment becomes Pb-rich/Te-poor condition. Then the positively ionized Ag interstitial ($Ag_I^+$) defect becomes the major defect under Pb-rich condition. Due to the small formation energy and small diffusion barrier of $Ag_I^+$, Ag can be easily dissolved into the PbTe matrix. The temperature behavior of the Ag defect formation energy …
The anharmonic lattice dynamics of rock-salt thermoelectric compounds SnTe and PbTe are investigated with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and first-principles calculations. The experiments show that, surprisingly, although SnTe is closer to the ferroelectric instability, phonon spectra in PbTe exhibit a more anharmonic character. This behavior is reproduced in first-principles calculations of the temperature-dependent phonon self-energy. Our simulations reveal how the nesting of phonon dispersions induces prominent features in the self-energy, which account for the measured INS spectra and …
Using a first-principles cluster expansion, we shed light on the solid-state phase diagram and structure of the recently discovered high-performance thermoelectrics, Pb-Ag-Sb-Te alloys. The observed nanoscale inhomogeneities are shown to be coherent precipitates of ordered (Ag)m(Sb)n(Te)m+n phases, such as AgSbTe2, all immiscible with rocksalt PbTe. The solubility is high for PbTe in AgSbTe2 and low for (Ag,Sb)Te in PbTe (8% vs. 0.6% at 850 K). The differences in the phonon spectra of PbTe and AgSbTe2 confirm that the inhomogeneities enhance the thermoelectric performance.
IV-VI materials are some of the most efficient bulk thermoelectric materials due to their proximity to soft-mode phase transitions, which leads to low lattice thermal conductivity. It has been shown that the lattice thermal conductivity of PbTe can be considerably reduced by bringing PbTe closer to the phase transition e.g. via lattice expansion. However, the effect of soft phonon modes on the electronic thermoelectric properties of such system remains unknown. Using first principles calculations, we show that the soft zone center transverse optical phonons do not deteriorate the electronic th…
The electronic, phonon and thermoelectric transport properties of (PbTe)2 layer are systematically investigated by using first-principles pseudopotential method and Boltzmann transport equation. Our calculations demonstrate that there is a valley degeneracy of six for the top valence band, which leads to larger carrier concentration and thus higher electrical conductivity without obvious reduction in the Seebeck coefficient. Moreover, the intrinsic van der Waals interactions between neighboring Pb layers induce additional phonon scattering and thus ultrasmall lattice thermal conductivity. As a…
High thermoelectric energy conversion efficiency requires a large figure-of-merit, zT, over a broad temperature range. To achieve this, we optimize the carrier concentrations of n-type PbTe from room up to hot-end temperatures by co-doping Bi and Ag. Bi is an efficient n-type dopant in PbTe, often leading to excessive carrier concentration at room temperature. As revealed by density functional theory calculations, the formation of Bi and Ag defect complexes is exploited to optimize the room temperature carrier concentration. At elevated temperatures, we demonstrate the dynamic dissolution of A…
Boltzmann transport calculations based on band structures generated with density functional theory (DFT) are often used in the discovery and analysis of thermoelectric materials. In standard implementations, such calculations require dense ${\it k}$-point sampling of the Brillouin zone and are therefore typically limited to the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), whereas more accurate methods such as hybrid functionals would have been preferable. GGA variants, however, generally underestimate the band gap. While premature onset of minority carriers can be avoided with scissor corrections…
In this paper we report on detailed temperature and magnetic field dependence of m agnetization of IV-VI semiconductor PbTe doped with mixed valence transition metal Cr$^{2+/3+}$. The material is studied solely by an integral superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer in order to quantitatively determine the contribution of single substitutional Cr$^{3+}$ as well as of various Cr-Te magnetic nanocrystals, including their identification. The applied experimental procedure reveals the presence of about $10^{19}$~cm$^{-3}$ paramagnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions formed via self-ionization of Cr…
Complex multicomponent systems based on PbTe, SnTe, and GeTe are of great interest for infrared devices and high-temperature thermoelectric applications. A deeper understanding of the atomic and electronic structure of these materials is crucial for explaining, predicting, and optimizing their properties, and to suggest new materials for better performance. In this work, we present our first-principles studies of the energy bands associated with various monovalent (Na, K, and Ag) and trivalent (Sb and Bi) impurities and impurity clusters in PbTe, SnTe, and GeTe using supercell models. We find …
Understanding the microscopic processes affecting the bulk thermal conductivity is crucial to develop more efficient thermoelectric materials. PbTe is currently one of the leading thermoelectric materials, largely thanks to its low thermal conductivity. However, the origin of this low thermal conductivity in a simple rocksalt structure has so far been elusive. Using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first-principles computations of the phonons, we identify a strong anharmonic coupling between the ferroelectric transverse optic (TO) mode and the longitudinal acousti…
Improving the figure of merit $zT$ of thermoelectric materials requires simultaneously a high power factor and low thermal conductivity. An effective approach for increasing the power factor is to align the band extremum and achieve high band degeneracy ($\geq$ 12) near the Fermi level as realized in PbTe [\textcolor{blue}{Pei et. al. \textit{Nature} 473, 66 (2010)}], which usually relies on band structure engineering, e.g., chemical doping and strain. However, very few materials could achieve such a high band degeneracy without heavy doping or suffering impractical strain. By employing state-…
High quality p-type PbTe-CdTe monocrystalline alloys containing up to 10 at.$\%$ of Cd are obtained by self-selecting vapor transport method. Mid infrared photoluminescence experiments are performed to follow the variation of the fundamental energy gap as a function of Cd content. The Hall mobility, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity and thermoelectric figure of merit parameter $ZT$ are investigated experimentally and theoretically paying particular attention to the two-valence band structure of the material. It is shown that the heavy-hole band near the $Σ$ point of the Brillouin zone…
We study the effect of nanoscale precipitates on lattice thermal conduction in thermoelectric PbTe using a combination of ab-initio phonon calculations and molecular dynamics. We take into account the effects of mass difference and change in force constants, and find an enhanced influence of the latter with increased precipitate concentration. As a consequence, our inclusion of the change in force constants in the calculation affords a smaller predicted optimal nano-precipitate size that minimizes the thermal conductivity. These results suggest that the phonon scattering by nanoprecipitates in…
Achieving high valley degeneracy (i.e. "band convergence") in a material usually results in considerably enhanced thermoelectric properties. However, it is still unclear why this strategy of designing efficient thermoelectric materials is so successful, since the benefit of increased density of states may be severely degraded by intervalley scattering. Using first-principles calculations, we investigate these effects in $p$-type PbTe, where temperature induces alignment of the $L$ and $Σ$ valleys at $\sim$~620~K. We explicitly show that the thermoelectric power factor and figure of merit peak …
In this work, we study the suitability of different thermoelectric materials like $Bi_2Te_3$, $Sb_{2}Te_{3}$, $PbTe$, $TAGS$, $CeFe_{4}Sb_{12}$, $SiGe$ and $TiO_{1.1}$ in estimation of thermoelectric generator's (TEG) efficiency. The efficiency of TEG made up of ${Be_{2}Te_{3}}$ or $Sb_{2}Te_{3}$ gives $\sim$7\% in temperature range of 310 K - 500 K. $PbTe$ or $TAGS$ or $CeFe_{4}Sb_{12}$ gives $\sim$6\% in temperature range of 500 K - 900 K and $SiGe$ or $TiO_{1.1}$ also have remarkable efficiency in higher temperature range i.e $\sim$1200 K. Here, we report the enhancement of efficiency by us…
Band engineering is an important mechanism to increase the thermopower of thermoelectric materials by reconstructing the band structure near Fermi level. PbTe and SnTe are the most representative systems in which band engineering were achieved by various dopants. Starting with the elementary understanding of the band structures, we established the phase diagram for the band engineering in p-type PbTe/SnTe by constructing an s-p bonding model. We show that the effects of band tuning are mainly determined by an inherent parameter of doping element: the s orbital energy level. With the phase diag…
We present the full thermoelectric characterization of nanostructured bulk PbTe and PbTe-PbSe samples fabricated from colloidal core-shell nanoparticles followed by spark plasma sintering. An unusually large thermopower is found in both materials, and the possibility of energy filtering as opposed to grain boundary scattering as an explanation is discussed. A decreased Debye temperature and an increased molar specific heat are in accordance with recent predictions for nanostructured materials. On the basis of these results we propose suitable core-shell material combinations for future thermoe…
PbTe, one of the most promising thermoelectric materials, has recently demonstrated thermoelectric figure of merit ($ZT$) of above 2.0 when alloyed with group II elements. The improvements are due mainly to significant reduction of lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_{l}$), which was in turn attributed to nanoparticle precipitates. However, a fundamental understanding of various phonon scattering mechanisms within the bulk alloy is still lacking. In this work, we apply the newly-developed density-functional-theory (DFT)-based compressive sensing lattice dynamics (CSLD) approach to model lattice h…
We performed the first-principles calculation on common thermoelectric semiconductors $\rm Bi_2Te_3$, $\rm Bi_2Se_3$, $\rm SiGe$, and $\rm PbTe$ in bulk three-dimension (3D) and two-dimension (2D). We found that miniaturization of materials does not generally increase the thermoelectric figure of merit ($ZT$) according to the Hicks and Dresselhaus (HD) theory. For example, $ZT$ values of 2D $ \rm PbTe$ (0.32) and 2D $ \rm SiGe$ (0.04) are smaller than their 3D counterparts (0.49 and 0.09, respectively). Meanwhile, the $ZT$ values of 2D $\rm Bi_2Te_3$ (0.57) and 2D $\rm Bi_2Se_3$ (0.43) are lar…
We present an analysis of the thermoelectric properties of of $n$-type GeTe and SnTe in relation to the lead chalcogenides PbTe and PbSe. We find that the singly degenerate conduction bands of semiconducting GeTe and SnTe are highly non-ellipsoidal, even very close to the band edges. This leads to isoenergy surfaces with a strongly corrugated shape that is clearly evident at carrier concentrations well below 0.005 $e$ per formula unit (7 - 9 $\times$ 10$^{19}$cm$^{-3}$ depending on material) Analysis within Boltzmann theory suggests that this corrugation may be favorable for the thermoelectric…
Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we studied bulk and surface electronic band structures of narrow-gap semiconductor lead telluride (PbTe) thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy both perpendicular and parallel to the Γ-L direction. The comparison of ARPES data with the first-principles calculation reveals the details of band structures, orbital characters, spin-orbit splitting energies, and surface states. The photon-energy-dependent spectra show the bulk character. Both the L and Σ valence bands are observed and their energy difference is determined. The spin-orbit …
We investigate the harmonic and anharmonic contributions to the phonon spectrum of lead telluride, and perform a complete characterization of how the anharmonic effects dominate the phonons in PbTe as temperature increases. This effect is the strongest factor in the favorable thermoelectric properties of PbTe: an optical-acoustic phonon band crossing reduces the speed of sound and the intrinsic thermal conductivity. We present the detailed temperature dependence of the dispersion relation and compare our calculated neutron scattering cross section with recent experimental measurements. We anal…
The interactions between electrons and phonons drive a large array of technologically relevant material properties including ferroelectricity, thermoelectricity, and phase-change behaviour. In the case of many group IV-VI, V, and related materials, these interactions are strong and the materials exist near electronic and structural phase transitions. Their close proximity to phase instability produces a fragile balance among the various properties. The prototypical example is PbTe whose incipient ferroelectric behaviour has been associated with large phonon anharmonicity and thermoelectricity.…
The lead chalcogenides represent an important family of functional materials, in particular due to the benchmark high-temperature thermoelectric performance of PbTe. A number of recent investigations, experimental and theoretical, have aimed to gather insight into their unique lattice dynamics and electronic structure. However, the majority of first-principles modelling has been performed at fixed temperatures, and there has been no comprehensive and systematic computational study of the effect of temperature on the material properties. We report a comparative lattice-dynamics study of the tem…
We present results of detailed study on the electron dispersions and Fermi surface of lead telluride doped with $2\%$ of thallium, which is resonant impurity in PbTe. Using the KKR--CPA method, Bloch spectral functions (BSFs), which replace the dispersion relations in alloys, are calculated, and BSFs intensity maps over the Brillouin zone (alloy Fermi surface cross-sections) are presented. It is shown, that close to the valence band edge, Tl does not create an isolated impurity band, but due to its resonant character, strongly disturbs the host electronic bands, leading to disappearance of sha…
The major obstacle in the design of materials with low lattice thermal conductivity is the difficulty in efficiently scattering phonons across the entire frequency spectrum. Using first principles calculations, we show that driving PbTe materials to the brink of the ferroelectric phase transition could be a powerful strategy to solve this problem. We illustrate this concept by applying tensile [001] strain to PbTe and its alloys with another rock-salt IV-VI material, PbSe; and by alloying PbTe with a rhombohedral IV-VI material, GeTe. This induces extremely soft optical modes at the zone cente…
Understanding the detailed electronic structure of deep defect states in narrow band-gap semiconductors has been a challenging problem. Recently, self-consistent ab initio calculations within density functional theory (DFT) using supercell models have been successful in tackling this problem. In this paper, we carry out such calculations in PbTe, a well-known narrow band-gap semiconductor, for a large class of defects: cationic and anionic substitutional impurities of different valence, and cationic and anionic vacancies. For the cationic defects, we study a series of compounds RPb2n-1Te2n, wh…
We report a fully {\it ab-initio} calculation of the temperature dependence of the electronic band structure of PbTe. We address two main features relevant for the thermoelectric figure of merit: the temperature variations of the direct gap and the difference in energies of the two topmost valence band maxima located at L and $Σ$. We account for the energy shift of the electronic states due to thermal expansion, as well as electron-phonon interaction computed using the non-adiabatic Allen-Heine-Cardona formalism within density functional perturbation theory and the local density approximation.…
Despite being the archetypal thermoelectric material, still today some of the most exciting advances in the efficiency of these materials are being achieved by tuning the properties of PbTe. Its inherently low lattice thermal conductivity can be lowered to its fundamental limit by designing a structure capable of scattering phonons over a wide range of length scales. Intrinsic defects, such as vacancies or grain boundaries, can and do play the role of these scattering sites. Here we assess the effect of these defects by means of molecular dynamics simulations. For this we purposely parametrize…
At room temperature, PbTe and SnTe are efficient thermoelectrics with a cubic structure. At low temperature, SnTe undergoes a ferroelectric transition with a critical temperature strongly dependent on the hole concentration, while PbTe is an incipient ferroelectric. By using the stochastic self-consistent harmonic approximation, we investigate the anharmonic phonon spectra and the occurrence of a ferroelectric transition in both systems. We find that vibrational spectra strongly depends on the approximation used for the exchange-correlation kernel in density functional theory. If gradient corr…
The lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_{\rm L}$) of PbTiO$_3$ (PTO) is estimated using a combination of {\em ab initio} calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport equation. The computed $κ_{\rm L}$ is remarkably low, nearly comparable with the $κ_{\rm L}$ of good thermoelectric materials such as PbTe. In addition, a semiclassical analysis of the electronic transport quantities is presented, which suggests excellent thermoelectric properties, with a figure of merit $zT$ well over 1 for a wide range of temperature. For thermoelectric applications, the $κ_{\rm L}$ could be further reduced b…
Rock-salt structured chalcogenides, such as PbTe, PbSe, and SnTe, are the top candidates for mid-temperature thermoelectric applications, and their p-type thermoelectric efficiencies can be enhanced via aligning the valence bands. Here, we provided comprehensive numerical investigations on the effects of band convergence on electronic properties. We found that the extra valance band can indeed significantly enhance the power factor. Nevertheless, the extra valance band can also increase the electronic thermal conductivity, which partially offsets the enhanced power factor for the overall figur…
PbTe is a leading mid-range thermoelectric material with a $zT$ that has been enhanced by, amongst other methods, band engineering. Here we present an experimental study of the Hall effect, quantum oscillations, specific heat, and electron microprobe analysis that explores the evolution of the electronic structure of PbTe heavily doped with the `ideal' acceptor Na up to the solubility limit. We identify two phenomenological changes that onset as the electronic structure deviates from a Kane-type dispersion at around 180meV; a qualitative change in the field dependence of the Hall effect indica…
PbTe is a leading thermoelectric material at intermediate temperatures, largely thanks to its low lattice thermal conductivity. However, its efficiency is too low to compete with other forms of power generation. This efficiency can be effectively enhanced by designing nanostructures capable of scattering phonons over a wide range of length scales to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. The presence of grain boundaries can reduce the thermal conductivity to $\sim 0.5$ Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ for small vacancy concentrations and grain sizes. However, grains anneal at finite temperature, and equili…
Systematic experimental and theoretical research on the role of microstructure and interface thermal resistance on the thermal conductivity of the PbTe-CoSb3 bulk polycrystalline composite is presented. In particular, the correlation between the particle size of the dispersed phase and interface thermal resistance (R_{int}) on the phonon thermal conductivity (κ_{ph}) is discussed. With this aim, a series of PbTe-CoSb_3 polycrystalline composite materials with the different particle sizes of CoSb_3 was prepared. The structural (XRD) and microstructural analysis (SEM/EDXS) confirmed assumed chem…
High Seebeck coefficient by creating large density of state (DOS) around the Fermi level through either electronic structure modification or manipulating nanostructures, is commonly considered as a route to advanced thermoelectrics. However, large density of state due to flat bands leads to large effective mass, which results in a simultaneous decrease of mobility. In fact, the net effect of high effective mass is a lower thermoelectric figure of merit when the carriers are predominantly scattered by acoustic phonons according to the deformation potential theory of Bardeen-Shockley. We demonst…
Lead chalcogenides such as PbS, PbSe, and PbTe are of interest for their exceptional thermoelectric properties and strongly anharmonic lattice dynamics. Although PbTe has received the most attention, PbSe has a lower thermal conductivity despite being stiffer, a trend that prior first-principles calculations have not reproduced. Here, we use ab-initio calculations that explicitly account for strong anharmonicity to identify the origin of this low thermal conductivity as an anomalously large anharmonic interaction, exceeding in strength that in PbTe, between the transverse optic and longitudina…
Synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used to determine the electronic structure of layered SnSe, which was recently turned out to be a potential thermoelectric material. We observe that the top of the valence band consists of two nearly independent hole bands, whose tops differ by ~20 meV in energy, indicating the necessity of a multivalley model to describe the thermoelectric properties. The estimated effective masses are anisotropic, with in-plane values of 0.16-0.39 m$_0$ and an out-of-plane value of 0.71 m$_0$, where m$_0$ is the rest electron mass. Information of…
We study theoretically the effects of anisotropy on the thermoelectric performance of $p$-type AgBiSe$_2$. We present an apparent realization of the thermoelectric benefits of one-dimensional "plate-like" carrier pocket anisotropy in the valence band of this material. Based on first principles calculations we find a substantial anisotropy in the electronic structure, likely favorable for thermoelectric performance, in the valence bands of the hexagonal phase of the silver chalcogenide thermoelectric AgBiSe$_2$, while the conduction bands are more isotropic, and in our experiments do not attain…
Post-transition metal chalcogenides (PTMCs) such as GaSe, GaS, InSe, and InS have been proposed as promising thermoelectric materials due to low lattice conductivity, originating from the atomically layered structure, high Seebeck coefficient, and the anticipation that its figure-of-merit be improved when thinned to few-layers as the band structure turns into Mexican-hat valence band (MHVB). Here we show by ab initio calculations that the MHVB should be present even on thick films of InSe/GaSe type-II heterostructures, and a 50% enhancement on thermoelectric figure-of-merit zT at room-temperat…
Promising High Temperature Thermoelectric Performance of Alkali Metal-based Zintl phases X$_2$AgY (X = Na, K; Y = Sb, Bi): Insights from First-Principles Studies
The thermoelectric properties of PbSe have significantly improved in recent years reaching figures of merit ZT 1.6. The transport properties of the hole doped high temperature thermoelectric material PbSe are particularly interesting and play a key role in this. Here they were analyzed over a wide temperature and hole concentration ranges. The special features observed in the variation of the experimental Seebeck coefficient, and Hall coefficient can be accounted for within the framework of a two band model. Two valence bands separated by a temperature dependent energy offset are considered. T…
N-type Bi100-xSbx alloys have the highest thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) of all materials below 200K; here we investigate how filling multiple valence band pockets at T and H-points of the Brillouin zone produces high zT in p-type Sn-doped material. This approach, theoretically predicted to potentially give zT>1 in Bi, was used successfully in PbTe. We report thermopower, electrical and thermal conductivity (2 to 400K) of single crystals with 12<x<37 and polycrystals (x=50-90), higher Sb concentrations than previous studies. We obtain a 60% improvement in zT to 0.13.
Intervalley collisions, which scatter electrons from one valley or band to another, can be detrimental to thermoelectric performance in materials with multiple valleys/bands. In this study, density functional theory is used to investigate the electron-phonon scattering characteristics of three lead chalcogenides (PbS, PbSe, PbTe) and three half-Heuslers (ScNiBi, ScPdSb, ZrNiSn), which all possess multiple equivalent conduction valleys, in order to characterize and analyze their intravalley/intervalley components. To elucidate what controls the degree of intravalley and intervalley transitions,…
We report on low-temperature photoconductivity (PC) in n-PbTe(Ga) epitaxial films prepared by the hot-wall technique on <111>-BaF_2 substrates. Variation of the substrate temperature allowed us to change the resistivity of the films from 10^8 down to 10_{-2} Ohm x cm at 4.2 K. The resistivity reduction is associated with a slight excess of Ga concentration, disturbing the Fermi level pinning within the energy gap of n-PbTe(Ga). PC has been measured under continuous and pulse illumination in the temperature range 4.2-300 K. For films of low resistivity, the photoresponse is composed of negative…
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the evolution of the low-temperature Fermi surface of lead telluride, PbTe, when holes are introduced through sodium substitution on the lead site. Our Shubnikov-de-Haas measurements for samples with carrier concentrations up to $9.4\times10^{19}$cm$^{-3}$ (0.62 Na atomic $\%$) show the qualitative features of the Fermi surface evolution (topology and effective mass) predicted by our density functional (DFT) calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA): we obtain perfect ellipsoidal L-pockets at low and intermediat…
A high power factor and low lattice thermal conductivity are two essential ingredients of highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Although monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides possess high power factors, high lattice thermal conductivities significantly impede their practical applications. Our first-principles calculations show that these two ingredients are well fulfilled in the recently synthesized Pd$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ monolayer, whose crystal structure is composed of [Se$_{2}$]$^{2-}$ dimers, Se$^{2-}$ anions, and Pd$^{2+}$ cations coordinated in a square planar manner. Our detaile…
In this study, we have reported electronic structure, lattice dynamics, and thermoelectric (TE) transport properties of a new family of pentanary substituted TiNiSn systems using the 18 valence electron count (VEC) rule. From our calculated band structures and density of states, we show that by preserving the 18 VEC through aliovalent substitutions at the Ti site of TiNiSn semiconducting behavior can be achieved, and hence one can tune the band structure and band gap to maximize the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) value. Two approaches have been used for calculating the lattice thermal con…
Thermoelectric effects, measured by the Seebeck coefficients, refer to the phenomena in which a temperature difference or gradient imposed across a thermoelectric material induces an electrical potential difference or gradient, and vice versa, enabling the direct conversion of thermal and electric energies. All existing understanding and first-principles calculations of Seebeck coefficients have been based on the Boltzmann kinetic transport theory. Here we demonstrate that the Seebeck coefficient is a well-defined thermodynamic quantity that can be determined from the change in the chemical po…
Doubling the perovskite cell (double perovskite) has been found to open new possibilities for engineering functional materials, magnetic materials in particular. This route should be applicable to the antiperovskite (aPV) class. In the pnictide based double aPV (2aPV) class introduced here magnetism is very rare, and we address them as new topological materials, possibly with thermoelectric interest. We have found that the 2aPV supercell provides a systematically larger band gap that can serve to inhibit bulk conductivity, and also large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for band inversion. We present…
We have conducted temperature dependent Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the electronic structure of n-, p- type PbTe, PbSe and PbS, which are pre- mier thermoelectric materials. Our ARPES measurements on them provide direct evidence for the light hole upper valence bands (UVBs) and the so-called heavy hole lower valence bands (LVBs), and an unusual temperature dependent relative movement between their band maxima leading to a monotonic decrease in the energy separation between LVBs and UVBs with increase in temperature. This enables convergence of these valence bands…
We have conducted temperature dependent Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the electronic structures of PbTe, PbSe and PbS. Our ARPES data provide direct evidence for the \emph{light} hole upper valence bands (UVBs) and hitherto undetected \emph{heavy} hole lower valence bands (LVBs) in these materials. An unusual temperature dependent relative movement between these bands leads to a monotonic decrease in the energy separation between their maxima with increasing temperature, which is referred as band convergence and has long been believed to be the driving factor behin…
Biaxial strain effects on electronic structures and thermoelectric properties of monolayer $\mathrm{PtTe_2}$ are investigated by using generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for the electron part and GGA for the phonon part. Calculated results show that small compressive strain (about -3\%) can induce semiconductor-to-metal transition, which can easily be achieved in experiment. The conduction bands convergence is observed for unstrained $\mathrm{PtTe_2}$, which can be removed by both compressive and tensile strains. Tensile strain can give rise to valence band…
