Recently, Deutsch and Elizalde studied the largest and the smallest fixed points of permutations. Motivated by their work, we consider the analogous problems in weighted set partitions. Let $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ denote the total weight of partitions on $[n+1]$ with the largest singleton $\{k+1\}$. In this paper, explicit formulas for $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ and many combinatorial identities involving $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ are obtained by umbral operators and combinatorial methods. As applications, we investigate three special cases such as permutations, involutions and labeled forests. Particularly in the permutation case, we derive a surprising identity analogous to the Riordan identity related to tree enumerations, namely, \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}D_{k+1}(n+1)^{n-k} &=& n^{n+1}, \end{eqnarray*} where $D_{k}$ is the $k$-th derangement number or the number of permutations of $\{1,2,\dots, k\}$ with no fixed points.
We show that the joint distribution of the number of singleton pairs and the number of adjacency pairs is symmetric over the set partitions of type $B_n$ without zero-block, in analogy with the result of Callan for ordinary partitions.
Recently, Deutsch and Elizalde studied the largest and the smallest fixed points of permutations. Motivated by their work, we consider the analogous problems in set partitions. Let $A_{n,k}$ denote the number of partitions of $\{1,2,\dots, n+1\}$ with the largest singleton $\{k+1\}$ for $0\leq k\leq n$. In this paper, several explicit formulas for $A_{n,k}$, involving a Dobinski-type analog, are obtained by algebraic and combinatorial methods, many combinatorial identities involving $A_{n,k}$ and Bell numbers are presented by operator methods, and congruence properties of $A_{n,k}$ are also in…
We prove that the generating polynomials of partitions of an $n$-element set into non-singleton blocks, counted by the number of blocks, have real roots only and we study the asymptotic behavior of the leftmost roots. We apply this information to find the most likely number of blocks.
P.L. Erdos and L.A. Szekely [Adv. Appl. Math. 10(1989), 488-496] gave a bijection between rooted semilabeled trees and set partitions. L.H. Harper's results [Ann. Math. Stat. 38(1967), 410-414] on the asymptotic normality of the Stirling numbers of the second kind translates into asymptotic normality of rooted semilabeled trees with given number of vertices, when the number of internal vertices varies. The Erdos-Szekely bijection specializes to a bijection between phylogenetic trees and set partitions with classes of size \geq 2. We consider modified Stirling numbers of the second kind that en…
There is a familiar conjugate for integer partitions: transpose the Ferrers diagram, and a conjugate for integer compositions: transpose a Ferrers-like diagram. Here we propose a conjugate for set partitions and show that it interchanges # singletons and # adjacencies. Its restriction to noncrossing partitions cropped up in a 1972 paper of Kreweras. We also exhibit an analogous pairs of statistics interchanged by the composition conjugate.
In this paper we prove that Amdeberhan's conjecture on the largest size of $(t, t+1, t+2)$-core partitions is true. We also show that the number of $(t, t + 1, t + 2)$-core partitions with the largest size is $1$ or $2$ based on the parity of $t$. More generally, the largest size of $(t,t+1,..., t+p)$-core partitions and the number of such partitions with the largest size are determined.
Motivated by Amdeberhan's conjecture on $(t,t+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts, various results on the numbers, the largest sizes and the average sizes of simultaneous core partitions with distinct parts were obtained by many mathematicians recently. In this paper, we derive the largest sizes of $(t,mt\pm 1)$-core partitions with distinct parts, which verifies a generalization of Amdeberhan's conjecture. We also prove that the numbers of such partitions with the largest sizes are at most $2$.
We prove three main conjectures of Berkovich and Uncu (Ann. Comb. 23 (2019) 263--284) on the inequalities between the numbers of partitions of $n$ with bounded gap between largest and smallest parts for sufficiently large $n$. Actually our theorems are stronger than their original conjectures. The analytic version of our results shows that the coefficients of some partition $q$-series are eventually positive.
Motivated by a recent paper of Straub, we study the distribution of integer partitions according to the length of their largest hook, instead of the usual statistic, namely the size of the partitions. We refine Straub's analogue of Euler's Odd-Distinct partition theorem, derive a generalization in the spirit of Alder's conjecture, as well as a curious analogue of the first Rogers-Ramanujan identity. Moreover, we obtain a partition theorem that is the counterpart of Euler's pentagonal number theory in this setting, and connect it with the Rogers-Fine identity. We concludes with some congruence …
For each nonempty integer partition $π$, we define the maximal excludant of $π$ to be the largest nonnegative integer smaller than the largest part of $π$ that is not a part of $π$. Let $σ\!\operatorname{maex}(n)$ be the sum of maximal excludants over all partitions of $n$. We show that the generating function of $σ\!\operatorname{maex}(n)$ is closely related to a mock theta function studied by Andrews \textit{et al.} and Cohen. Further, we show that, as $n\to \infty$, $σ\!\operatorname{maex}(n)$ is asymptotic to the sum of largest parts of all partitions of $n$. Finally, the expectation of th…
This paper considers the degree-diameter problem for extremal and largest known undirected circulant graphs of degree 2 to 9 of arbitrary diameter. As these graphs are vertex transitive it is possible to define their distance partition. The number of vertices in each level of the distance partition is shown to be related to an established upper bound for the order of Abelian Cayley graphs. Furthermore these graphs are all found to have odd girth which is maximal for their diameter. Therefore the type of each vertex in a level may be well-defined by the number of adjacent vertices in the preced…
Consider the noncrossing set partitions of an $n$-element set which either do not contain the block $\{n-1,n\}$, or which do not contain the singleton block $\{n\}$ whenever $1$ and $n-1$ are in the same block. In this article we study the subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice induced by these elements, and show that it is a supersolvable lattice, and therefore lexicographically shellable. We give a combinatorial model for the NBB bases of this lattice and derive an explicit formula for the value of its Möbius function between least and greatest element. This work is motivated by a rec…
We study the generating function for overpartitions with bounded differences between largest and smallest parts, which is analogous to a result of Breuer and Kronholm on integer partitions. We also connect this problem with over $q$-binomial coefficients introduced by Dousse and Kim.
A \textsl{Sperner $k$-partition system} on a set $X$ is a set of partitions of $X$ into $k$ classes such that the classes of the partitions form a Sperner set system (so no class from a partition is a subset of a class from another partition). These systems were defined by Meagher, Moura and Stevens in \cite{MMS} who showed that if $|X| = k \ell$, then the largest Sperner $k$-partition system has size $\frac{1}{k}\binom{|X|}{\ell}$. In this paper we find bounds on the size of the largest Sperner $k$-partition system where $k$ does not divide the size of $X$, specifically, we give an exact boun…
Franklin's identity generalizes Euler's identity and states that the number of partitions of $n$ with $j$ different parts divisible by $r$ equals the number of partitions of $n$ with $j$ repeated parts. In this article, we give a refinement of Franklin's identity when $j=1$. We prove Franklin's identity when $j=1$, $r=2$ for partitions with fixed perimeter, i.e., fixed largest hook. We also derive a Beck-type identity for partitions with fixed perimeter: the excess in the number of parts in all partitions into odd parts with perimeter $M$ over the number of parts in all partitions into distinc…
We study the number $p(n,t)$ of partitions of $n$ with difference $t$ between largest and smallest parts. Our main result is an explicit formula for the generating function $P_t(q) := \sum_{n \ge 1} p(n,t) \, q^n$. Somewhat surprisingly, $P_t(q)$ is a rational function for $t>1$; equivalently, $p(n,t)$ is a quasipolynomial in $n$ for fixed $t>1$. Our result generalizes to partitions with an arbitrary number of specified distances.
Let $λ$ be a partition of the positive integer $n$ chosen umiformly at random among all such partitions. Let $L_n=L_n(λ)$ and $M_n=M_n(λ)$ be the largest part size and its multiplicity, respectively. For large $n$, we focus on a comparison between the partition statistics $L_n$ and $L_n M_n$. In terms of convergence in distribution, we show that they behave in the same way. However, it turns out that the expectation of $L_n M_n -L_n$ grows as fast as $\frac{1}{2}\log{n}$ We obtain a precise asymptotic expansion for this expectation and conclude with an open problem arising from this study.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts where the largest part is at most $t\sqrt{n}$ for fixed $t \in \mathbb{R}$. Our method follows a probabilistic approach of Romik, who gave a simpler proof of Szekeres' asymptotic formula for distinct parts partitions when instead the number of parts is bounded by $t\sqrt{n}$. Although equivalent to a circle method/saddle-point method calculation, the probabilistic approach predicts the shape of the asymptotic formula, to some degree.
Recently, Andrews gave a detailed study of partitions with even parts below odd parts in which only the largest even part appears an odd number of times. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial proof of the generating function identity of such partitions. We also have a further investigation on the largest even part. Finally, we give an interesting weighted overpartition generalization.
We compute the limit shapes of the Young diagrams of the minimal difference $p$ partitions and provide a simple physical interpretation for the limit shapes. We also calculate the asymptotic distribution of the largest part of the Young diagram and show that the scaled distribution has a Gumbel form for all $p$. This Gumbel statistics for the largest part remains unchanged even for general partitions of the form $E=\sum_i n_i i^{1/ν}$ with $ν>0$ where $n_i$ is the number of times the part $i$ appears.
Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan introduced the notion of $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings for set partitions, and proved that the sizes of the largest $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings in the partitions of an $n$-set possess a symmetric joint distribution. This work considers a generalization of these results to set partitions whose arcs are labeled by an $r$-element set (which we call \emph{$r$-colored set partitions}). In this context, a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting is a sequence of arcs, all with the same color, which form a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting in the usual sense. After showing that the …
We prove various inequalities between the number of partitions with the bound on the largest part and some restrictions on occurrences of parts. We explore many interesting consequences of these partition inequalities. In particular, we show that for $L\geq 1$, the number of partitions with $l-s \leq L$ and $s=1$ is greater than the number of partitions with $l-s\leq L$ and $s>1$. Here $l$ and $s$ are the largest part and the smallest part of the partition, respectively.
We study two types of probability measures on the set of integer partitions of $n$ with at most $m$ parts. The first one chooses the random partition with a chance related to its largest part only. We then obtain the limiting distributions of all of the parts together and that of the largest part as $n$ tends to infinity while $m$ is fixed or tends to infinity. In particular, if $m$ goes to infinity not too fast, the largest part satisfies the central limit theorem. The second measure is very general. It includes the Dirichlet distribution and the uniform distribution as special cases. We deri…
We revisit the following problem (along with its higher dimensional variant): Given a set $S$ of $n$ points inside an axis-parallel rectangle $U$ in the plane, find a maximum-area axis-parallel sub-rectangle that is contained in $U$ but contains no points of $S$. (I) We present an algorithm that finds a large empty box amidst $n$ points in $[0,1]^d$: a box whose volume is at least $\frac{\log{d}}{4(n + \log{d})}$ can be computed in $O(n+d \log{d})$ time. (II) To better analyze the above approach, we introduce the concepts of perfect vector sets and properly overlapping partitions, in connectio…
This paper investigates partitions which have neither parts nor hook lengths divisible by $p$, referred to as $p$-core $p'$-partitions. We show that the largest $p$-core $p'$-partition corresponds to the longest walk on a graph with vertices $\{0, 1, \ldots, p-1\}$ and labelled edges defined via addition modulo $p$. We also exhibit an explicit family of large $p$-core $p'$-partitions, giving a lower bound on the size of the largest such partition which is of the same degree as the upper bound found by McSpirit and Ono.
The restricted partitions in which the largest part is less than or equal to $N$ and the number of parts is less than or equal to $k$ were investigated by Andrews in \cite{Andrews76}. These partitions were extended recently by the author to the partitions into parts of two kinds. In this paper, we use a new class of restricted partitions into parts of two kinds to provide new combinatorial interpretations for two identities of Guo and Yang.
In a geometry, a maximal cap is a collection of points of largest size containing no lines. In AG(4,3), maximal caps contain 20 points. The 81 points of AG(4,3) can be partitioned into 4 mutually disjoint maximal caps together with a single point P, where every pair of points that makes a line with P lies entirely inside one of those caps. The caps in a partition can be paired up so that both pairs are either in exactly one partition or they are both in two different partitions. This difference determines the two equivalence classes of partitions of AG(4,3) under the action by affine transform…
A $(k,\ell)$-partition is a set partition which has $\ell$ blocks each of size $k$. Two uniform set partitions $P$ and $Q$ are said to be partially $t$-intersecting if there exist blocks $P_{i}$ in $P$ and $Q_{j}$ in $Q$ such that $\left| P_{i} \cap Q_{j} \right|\geq t$. In this paper we prove a version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for partially $2$-intersecting $(k,\ell)$-partitions. In particular, we show for $\ell$ sufficiently large, the set of all $(k,\ell)$-partitions in which a block contains a fixed pair is the largest set of 2-partially intersecting $(k,\ell)$-partitions. For for $k=3…
The main result of this paper is a bijective proof showing that the generating function for partitions with bounded differences between largest and smallest part is a rational function. This result is similar to the closely related case of partitions with fixed differences between largest and smallest parts which has recently been studied through analytic methods by Andrews, Beck, and Robbins. Our approach is geometric: We model partitions with bounded differences as lattice points in an infinite union of polyhedral cones. Surprisingly, this infinite union tiles a single simplicial cone. This …
In 2007, Olsson and Stanton gave an explicit form for the largest $(a, b)$-core partition, for any relatively prime positive integers $a$ and $b$, and asked whether there exists an $(a, b)$-core that contains all other $(a, b)$-cores as subpartitions; this question was answered in the affirmative first by Vandehey and later by Fayers independently. In this paper we investigate a generalization of this question, which was originally posed by Fayers: for what triples of positive integers $(a, b, c)$ does there exist an $(a, b, c)$-core that contains all other $(a, b, c)$-cores as subpartitions? …
In this paper, we study $(s,s+1)$-core partitions with $d$-distinct parts. We obtain results on the number and the largest size of such partitions, so we extend Xiong's paper in which the results are obtained about $(s,s+1)$-core partitions with distinct parts. Also, we propose a conjecture about $(s,s+r)$-core partitions with $d$-distinct parts for $1 \le r \le d$.
We study probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of natural volume-and-trace weighted plane partitions and their continuous analogues. We prove asymptotic limit laws for the largest parts of these ensembles in terms of new and known hard- and soft-edge distributions of random matrix theory. As a corollary we obtain an asymptotic transition between Gumbel and Tracy--Widom GUE fluctuations for the largest part of such plane partitions, with the continuous Bessel kernel providing the interpolation. We interpret our results in terms of two natural models of directed last passage percolation (LPP):…
This article is an extensive study of partitions with fixed number of odd and even-indexed odd parts. We use these partitions to generalize recent results of C. Savage and A. Sills. Moreover, we derive explicit formulas for generating functions for partitions with bounds on the largest part, the number of parts and with a fixed value of BG-rank or with a fixed value of alternating sum of parts. We extend the work of C. Boulet, and as a result, obtain a four-variable generalization of Gaussian binomial coefficients. In addition we provide combinatorial interpretation of the Berkovich-Warnaar id…
