In this paper, weak symmetries of the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation have been investigated. Indeed, this method has been performed by applying the non-classical symmetries of the BBM equation and the infinitesimal generators of the classical symmetry algebra of the KdV equation as the starting constraints. Similarity reduced equations as well as some exact solutions of the BBM equation are obtained via this method.
We study the stabilization issue of the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation on a finite star-shaped network with a damping term acting on the central node. In a first time, we prove the well-posedness of this system. Then thanks to the frequency domain method, we get the asymptotic stabilization result.
We use Wasserstein metrics adapted to study the action of the flow of the BBM equation on probability measures. We prove the continuity of this flow and the stability of invariant measures for finite times.
We prove the existence of a compact random attractor for the stochastic Benjamin-Bona-Mahony Equation defined on an unbounded domain. This random attractor is invariant and attracts every pulled-back tempered random set under the forward flow. The asymptotic compactness of the random dynamical system is established by a tail-estimates method, which shows that the solutions are uniformly asymptotically small when space and time variables approach infinity.
In this paper we derive time-decay and Strichartz estimates for the generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation on the framework of modulation spaces $M^s_{p,q}.$ We use this results to analyze the existence of local and global solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problem with rough data in modulation spaces. The results improve known results in Sobolev spaces in some sense.
We introduce several mechanisms to dissipate the energy in the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation. We consider either a distributed (localized) feedback law, or a boundary feedback law. In each case, we prove the global wellposedness of the system and the convergence towards a solution of the BBM equation which is null on a band. If the Unique Continuation Property holds for the BBM equation, this implies that the origin is asymp-totically stable for the damped BBM equation.
This paper focuses on the two-dimensional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equations with a general flux function. The aim is at the global (in time) well-posedness of the initial-and boundary-value problem for these equations defined in the upper half-plane. Under suitable growth conditions on the flux function, we are able to establish the global well-posedness in a Sobolev class. When the initial- and boundary-data become more regular, the corresponding solutions are shown to be classical. In addition, the continuous dependence on the data is also obtained.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem with the far field condisiton for the generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation with a fourth-order dissipative term. When the corresponding Riemann problem for the hyperbolic part admits a Riemann solution which consists of single rarefaction wave, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the rarefaction wave as time goes to infinity. We can further obtain the same global asymptotic stability of the rarefaction wave to the generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Benjamin-Bona-Mahony…
The existence, uniqueness and stability of periodic traveling waves for the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation is considered. In our approach, we give sufficient conditions to prove a uniqueness result for the single-lobe solution obtained by a constrained minimization problem. The spectral stability is then shown by determining that the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum and mass at the periodic wave has no negative eigenvalues. We propose the Petviashvili's method to investigate the spectral stability…
We consider the nonlinear integrodifferential Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation $$ u_t - u_{txx} + u_x - \int_0^\infty g(s) u_{xx}(t-s) {\rm d} s + u u_x = f $$ where the dissipation is entirely contributed by the memory term. Under a suitable smallness assumption on the external force $f$, we show that the related solution semigroup possesses the global attractor in the natural weak energy space. The result is obtained by means of a nonstandard approach based on the construction of a suitable family of attractors on certain invariant sets of the phase space.
We consider the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation on the one dimensional torus T = R/(2πZ). We prove a Unique Continuation Property (UCP) for small data in H^1(T) with nonnegative zero means. Next we extend the UCP to certain BBM-like equations, including the equal width wave equation and the KdV-BBM equation. Applications to the stabilization of the above equations are given. In particular, we show that when an internal control acting on a moving interval is applied in BBM equation, then a semiglobal exponential stabilization can be derived in H^s(T) for any s \geq 1. Furthermore, we prove …
This paper is devoted to the spatial analyticity of the solution of the BBM equation on the real line with an analytic initial data. It is shown that the analytic radius has a lower bound like $t^{-\frac{2}{3}}$ as time $t$ goes to infinity, which is an improvement of previous results. The main new ingredient is a higher order almost conservation law in analytic spaces. This is proved by introducing an equivalent analytic norm with smooth symbol and establishing some algebra identities of higher order polynomials.
In this paper we establish a rigorous spectral stability analysis for solitary waves associated to a generalized fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony type equation. Besides the well known smooth and positive solitary wave with large wave speed, we present the existence of smooth negative solitary waves having small wave speed. The spectral stability is then determined by analysing the behaviour of the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum at the solitary wave. Since the analytical solution is not known, we generate t…
The generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation (gBBMB) describes the flow of blood through a long, viscoelastic artery. In this article we introduce a formulation of gBBMB valid on networks with semi-infinite edges joined at a single junction, with the network's edges corresponding to a segment of the arterial tree. To reflect sudden changes in the material properties of blood vessels, the coefficients of gBBMB are allowed to take different values on each edge of the network. Critically, our formulation ensures that the total mass of the solution to gBBMB is constant in time, even in th…
We study the stability of a four parameter family of spatially periodic traveling wave solutions of the generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation to two classes of perturbations: periodic perturbations with the same periodic structure as the underlying wave, and long-wavelength localized perturbations. In particular, we derive necessary conditions for spectral instability to perturbations to both classes of perturbations by deriving appropriate asymptotic expansions of the periodic Evans function, and we outline a nonlinear stability theory to periodic perturbations based on variational method…
We are interested in the existence of travelling waves for the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation on a network. First we construct an explicit wave, defined in $\mathbb{R}$. Then, we use this wave to derive some conditions on the coefficients appearing in the equations and on the geometry of the network to ensure the existence of travelling waves on the network.
The generalized fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (gfBBM) equation models the propagation of small amplitude long unidirectional waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. The equation involves two fractional terms unlike the well-known fBBM equation. In this paper, we prove local existence and uniqueness of the solutions for the Cauchy problem. The sufficient conditions for the existence of solitary wave solutions are obtained. The Petviashvili method is proposed for the generation of the solitary wave solutions and their evolution in time is investigated numerically by Fourier spect…
This paper has various goals: first, we develop a local and global well-posedness theory for the regularized Benjamin-Ono equation in the periodic setting, second, we show that the Cauchy problem for this equation (in both periodic and non-periodic case) cannot be solved by an iteration scheme based on the Duhamel formula for negative Sobolev indices, third, a proof of the existence of a smooth curve of periodic travelling wave solutions, for the regularized Benjamin-Ono equation, with fixed minimal period 2L, is given. It is also shown that these solutions are nonlinearly stable in the energy…
We consider the Cauchy problem of third order Benjamin-Ono type equations on the torus. Nonlinear terms may yield derivative losses, which prevents us from using the classical energy method. In order to overcome that difficulty, we add a correction term into the energy. We also use the Bona-Smith type argument to show the continuous dependence.
We consider Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation of the form $$ u_t+u_x+uu_x-u_{xxt}=0, \quad (x, t)\in \mathcal{M}\times \mathbb R $$ where $\mathcal{M}= \mathbb T$ or $\mathbb R.$ We establish norm inflation (NI) with infinite loss of regularity at general initial data in Fourier amalgam and Wiener amalgam spaces with negative regularity. This strengthen several known NI results at zero initial data in $H^s(\mathbb T)$ established by Bona-Dai (2017) and ill-posedness result established by Bona-Tzvetkov (2008) and Panthee (2011) in $H^s(\mathbb R).$ Our result is sharp with respect to local we…
The Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation has proven to be a good approximation for the unidirectional propagation of small amplitude long waves in a channel where the crosswise variation can be safely ignored. The Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (BBM-KP) equation is the regularized version of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation which arises in various modeling scenarios corresponding to nonlinear dispersive waves that propagate principally along the $x$-axis with weak dispersive effects undergone in the direction parallel to the $y$-axis and normal to the primary direction of propag…
We consider the probabilistic Cauchy problem for the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation (BBM) on the one-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}$ with initial data below $L^{2}(\mathbb{T})$. With respect to random initial data of strictly negative Sobolev regularity, we prove that BBM is almost surely globally well-posed. The argument employs the $I$-method to obtain an a priori bound on the growth of the `residual' part of the solution. We then discuss the stability properties of the solution map in the deterministically ill-posed regime.
This paper introduces a measure or statistics invariant through the flow of the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation and studies its stability, regarding a specific class of perturbation and in the idea of the wave turbulence theory.
We study the stability and instability of periodic traveling waves in the vicinity of the origin in the spectral plane, for equations of Benjamin- Bona-Mahony (BBM) and regularized Boussinesq types permitting nonlocal dispersion. We extend recent results for equations of Korteweg-de Vries type and derive modulational instability indices as functions of the wave number of the underlying wave. We show that a sufficiently small, periodic traveling wave of the BBM equation is spectrally unstable to long wavelength perturbations if the wave number is greater than a critical value and a sufficiently…
The initial- and boundary-value problem for the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation is studied in this paper. The goal is to understand the periodic behavior (termed as eventual periodicity) of its solutions corresponding to periodic boundary condition or periodic forcing. To this aim, we derive a new formula representing solutions of this initial- and boundary-value problem by inverting the operator $\partial_t +α\partial_x -γ\partial_{xxt}$ defined in the space-time quarter plane. The eventual periodicity of the linearized BBM equation with periodic boundary data and forcing term is establis…
In this work we study a dispersive equation with a dissipative term, the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation. First we prove that the initial value problem for this equation is well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb{R}),$ for $s\geq 0$ and ill-posed if $s< 0.$ The ill-posedness is in the sense that the flow-map cannot be continuous at the origin from $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ to even $\mathcal{D}'(\mathbb{R}).$ Additionally, we establish an exact theory of convergence of the periodic solutions to the continuous one, in Sobolev spaces, as the period goes to infinity.
We construct a minimal mass blow up solution of the modified Benjamin-Ono equation (mBO) \[ u_{t}+(u^3-D^1 u)_{x}=0, \] which is a standard mass critical dispersive model. Let $Q\in H^{\frac 12}$, $Q>0$, be the unique ground state solution of $D^1 Q +Q=Q^3$, constructed using variational arguments by Weinstein (Comm. PDE, 12 (1987), J. Diff. Eq., 69 (1987)) and Albert, Bona and Saut (Proc. Royal London Soc., 453 (1997)), and whose uniqueness was recently proved by Frank and Lenzmann (Acta Math., 210 (2013)). We show the existence of a solution $S$ of (mBO) satisfying $\|S \|_{L^2}=\|Q\|_{L^2}$…
We consider a generalization of the mKdV equation, which contains dissipation terms similar to those contained in both the Benjamin-Bona-Mahoney equation and the famous Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations. Our objective is the construction of classical (solitons) and non-classical (peakons and cuspons) solitary wave solutions of this equation.
This paper sheds new light on the stability properties of solitary wave solutions associated with models of Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin\&Bona\&Mahoney type, when the dispersion is very lower. Via an approach of compactness, analyticity and asymptotic perturbation theory, we establish sufficient conditions for the existence of exponentially growing solutions to the linearized problem and so a criterium of linear instability of solitary waves is obtained for both models. Moreover, the nonlinear stability and linear instability of the ground states solutions for both models is obtained for som…
We provide conditions for existence of hyperbolic, unbounded periodic and elliptic solutions in terms of Weierstrass $\wp$ functions of both third and fifth-order KdV--BBM (Korteweg-de Vries--Benjamin, Bona \& Mahony) regularized long wave equation. An analysis for the initial value problem is developed together with a local and global well-posedness theory for the third-order KdV--BBM equation. Traveling wave reduction is used together with zero boundary conditions to yield solitons and periodic unbounded solutions, while for nonzero boundary conditions we find solutions in terms of Weierstra…
We show that introducing an exponential cut-off on a suitable Sobolev norm facilitates the proof of quasi-invariance of Gaussian measures with respect to Hamiltonian PDE flows and allows us to establish the exact Jacobi formula for the density. We exploit this idea in two different contexts, namely the periodic fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation with dispersion~$γ>1$ and the periodic one dimensional quintic defocussing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). For the BBM equation we study the transport of the cut-off Gaussian measures on fractional Sobolev spaces, while for the NLS eq…
