Lie symmetry group method is applied to study the boundary-layer equations for two-dimensional steady flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid near a stagnation point at a heated stretching sheet placed in a porous medium equation. The symmetry group and its optimal system are given, and group invariant solutions associated to the symmetries are obtained. Finally the structure of the Lie algebra symmetries is determined.
In this paper, we mainly consider two class of travelling stratified periodic water waves, one with negative (or without) surface tension and the other with constant Bernoulli's function and stagnation points. We first establish the symmetry result for stratified water waves with negative (or without) surface tension, but without stagnation by using the modified maximum principle. Furthermore, the symmetry property of stratified water waves with constant Bernoulli's function and stagnation points is also obtained provided the monotonic property is known.
We construct small-amplitude steady periodic gravity water waves arising as the free surface of water flows that contain stagnation points and possess a discontinuous distribution of vorticity in the sense that the flows consist of two layers of constant but different vorticities. We also describe the streamline pattern in the moving frame for the constructed flows.
In this paper we construct small amplitude periodic internal waves traveling at the boundary region between two rotational and homogeneous fluids with different densities. Within a period, the waves we obtain have the property that the gradient of the stream function associated to the fluid beneath the interface vanishes, on the wave surface, at exactly two points. Furthermore, there exists a critical layer which is bounded from above by the wave profile. Besides, we prove, without excluding the presence of stagnation points, that if the vorticity function associated to each fluid in part is r…
A class of semi-bounded solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations satisfying either periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions is examined. For smooth initial data, new blowup criteria in terms of the initial concavity profile is presented and the effects that the boundary conditions have on the global regularity of solutions is discussed. In particular, by deriving a formula for a general solution along Lagrangian trajectories, we describe how periodicity can prevent blow-up. This is as opposed to Dirichlet boundary conditions which, as we will show, allow for the formati…
We prove the existence of small steady periodic capillary-gravity water waves for general stratified flows, where we allow for stagnation points in the flow. We establish the existence of both laminar and non-laminar flow solutions for the governing equations. This is achieved by using bifurcation theory and estimates based on the ellipticity of the system, where we regard, in turn, the mass-flux and surface tension as bifurcation parameters.
The two-dimensional free-boundary problem describing steady gravity waves with vorticity on water of finite depth is considered. Under the assumption that the vorticity is a negative constant whose absolute value is sufficiently large, we construct a solution with the following properties. The corresponding flow is unidirectional at infinity and has a solitary wave of elevation as its upper boundary; under this unidirectional flow, there is a bounded domain adjacent to the bottom, which surrounds an interior stagnation point and is divided into two subdomains with opposite directions of flow b…
This paper studies periodic traveling gravity waves at the free surface of water in a flow of constant vorticity over a flat bed. Using conformal mappings the free-boundary problem is transformed into a quasilinear pseudodifferential equation for a periodic function of one variable. The new formulation leads to a regularity result and, by use of bifurcation theory, to the existence of waves of small amplitude even in the presence of stagnation points in the flow.
In this paper we present a characterization of the symmetric rotational periodic gravity water waves of finite depth and without stagnation points in terms of the underlying flow. Namely, we show that such a wave is symmetric and has a single crest and trough per period if and only if there exists a vertical line within the fluid domain such that all the fluid particles located on that line minimize there simultaneously their distance to the fluid bed as they move about. Our analysis uses the moving plane method, sharp elliptic maximum principles, and the principle of analytic continuation.
We consider a steady axisymmetric solution of the Euler equations for a fluid (incompressible and with zero vorticity) with a free surface, acted on only by gravity. We analyze stagnation points as well as points on the axis of symmetry. At points on the axis of symmetry which are not stagnation points, constant velocity motion is the only blow-up profile consistent with the invariant scaling of the equation. This suggests the presence of downward pointing cusps at those points. At stagnation points on the axis of symmetry, the unique blow-up profile consistent with the invariant scaling of th…
In this paper, we investigate the similarity solutions for a steady laminar incompressible boundary layer equations governing the Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow near the forward stagnation point of two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies. This leads to the study of a boundary value problem involving a third order autonomous ordinary differential equation. Our main results are the existence, uniqueness and nonexistence for concave or convex solutions.
We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and reta…
This paper considers two-dimensional steady solitary waves with constant vorticity propagating under the influence of gravity over an impermeable flat bed. Unlike in previous works on solitary waves, we allow for both internal stagnation points and overhanging wave profiles. Using analytic global bifurcation theory, we construct continuous curves of large-amplitude solutions. Along these curves, either the wave amplitude approaches the maximum possible value, the dimensionless wave speed becomes unbounded, or a singularity develops in a conformal map describing the fluid domain. We also show t…
In this paper, we investigate the singularity near the degenerate points of the steady axisymmetric flow with general vorticity of an inviscid incompressible fluid acted on by gravity and with a free surface. We called the points on the free boundary at which the gradient of the stream function vanishes as the degenerate points. The main results in this paper give the different classifications of the singularity near the degenerate points on the free surface. More precisely, we obtained that at the stagnation points, the possible profiles must be a Stokes corner, or a horizontal cusp, or a hor…
In this paper, a compensated compactness framework is established for sonic-subsonic approximate solutions to the $n$-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow that may contain stagnation points. This compactness framework holds provided that the approximate solutions are uniformly bounded and satisfy $H^{-1}_{loc}(Ω)$ compactness conditions. As illustration, we show the existence of sonic-subsonic weak solution to n-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow past obstacles or through an infinitely long nozzle. This is the first result concern…
The 2d Boussinesq equations model large scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. Whether its solutions develop a singularity in finite-time remains a classical open problem in mathematical fluid dynamics. In this work, blowup from smooth nontrivial initial velocities in stagnation-point form solutions of this system is established. On an infinite strip $Ω=\{(x,y)\in[0,1]\times\mathbb{R}^+\}$, we consider velocities of the form $u=(f(t,x),-yf_x(t,x))$, with scalar temperature\, $θ=yρ(t,x)$. Assuming $f_x(0,x)$ attains its global maximum only at points $x_i^*$ located on the boundary of $[0,1]$, gen…
In this paper, we consider the zero-viscosity limit of the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations in $(0,L)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ with non-slip boundary conditions. By estimating the stream-function of the remainder, we justify the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansions.
Incompressible Euler flows in narrow domains, in which the horizontal length scale is much larger than other scales, play an important role in applications, and their leading-order behavior can be described by the hydrostatic Euler equations. In this paper, we show that steady solutions of the hydrostatic Euler equations in an infinite strip strictly away from stagnation must be shear flows. Furthermore, we prove the existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of global steady solutions to the hydrostatic Euler equations in general nozzles. In terms of stream function formulation, the hydro…
In this paper, we consider the steady MHD equations with inhomogeneous boundary conditions for the velocity and the tangential component of the magnetic field. Using a new construction of the magnetic lifting, we obtain existence of weak solutions under sharp assumption on boundary data for the magnetic field.
We introduce a two-dimensional Keller-Segel type free boundary model for motility of eukaryotic cells on substrates. The key ingredients of this model are the Darcy law for overdamped motion of the cytoskeleton (active) gel and Hele-Shaw type boundary conditions (Young-Laplace equation for pressure and continuity of velocities). We first show that radially symmetric steady state solutions become unstable and bifurcate to traveling wave solutions. Next we establish linear and nonlinear stability of the steady states. We show that linear stability analysis is inconclusive for both steady states …
We prove the existence of solution in a class H^2(Ω) x H^1(Ω) to steady compressible Oseen system with slip boundary conditions in a two dimensional, convex domain with the boundary of class H^{5/2}. The method is to regularize a weak solution obtained via the Galerkin method. The problem of regularization is reduced to a problem of solvability of a certain transport equation by application of the Helmholtz decomposition. The method works under additional assumption on the geometry of the boundary.
We study both the topological structure stability and the relations of the steady Magnetohydrodynamic equations when $ν,η$ are given different values in muti-connected bounded domain. We also show the solutions's existence for fixed $ν, η.$ The theoretical is the Morse-Sard theorem on Sobolev spaces.
In this paper, we are concerned with the validity of Prandtl boundary layer expansion for the solutions to two dimensional (2D) steady viscous incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in a domain $\{(X, Y)\in[0, L]\times\mathbb{R}_+\}$ with a moving flat boundary $\{Y=0\}$. As a direct consequence, even though there exist strong boundary layers, the inviscid type limit is still established for the solutions of 2D steady viscous incompressible MHD equations in Sobolev spaces provided that the following three assumptions hold: the hydrodynamics and magnetic Reynolds numbers take the s…
This paper is concerned with the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory in the inviscid limit of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which is an extension of the pioneer paper (Y. Guo et al., 2017, Ann. PDE) from a domain of $[0,L]\times\mathbb{R}_+$ to $[0,L]\times[0,2]$. Under the symmetry assumption, we establish the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansions and the error estimates. The convergence rate as $\e\rightarrow 0$ is also given.
We investigate positive steady states of an indefinite superlinear reaction-diffusion equation arising from population dynamics, coupled with a nonlinear boundary condition. Both the equation and the boundary condition depend upon a positive parameter $λ$, which is inversely proportional to the diffusion rate. We establish several multiplicity results when the diffusion rate is large and analyze the asymptotic profiles and the stability properties of these steady states as the diffusion rate grows to infinity. In particular, our results show that in some cases bifurcation from zero and from in…
We consider a model of chemically reacting heat conducting compressible mixture. We investigate the corresponding system of partial differential equations in the steady regime with slip boundary conditions for the velocity and, in dependence on the model parameters, we establish existence of either weak or variational entropy solutions. The results extend the range of parameters for which the existence of weak solutions is known in the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions for the velocity.
We establish the existence of axially symmetric weak solutions to steady incompressible magnetohydrodynamics with non-homogeneous boundary conditions. The key issue is the Bernoulli's law for the total head pressure $Φ=\f 12(|{\bf u}|^2+|{\bf h}|^2)+p$ to a special class of solutions to the inviscid, non-resistive MHD system, where the magnetic field only contains the swirl component.
This paper concerns the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory for steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flows over a rotating disk. We prove that the Navier Stokes flows can be decomposed into Euler and Prandtl flows in the inviscid limit. In so doing, we develop a new set of function spaces and prove several embedding theorems which capture the interaction between the Prandtl scaling and the geometry of our domain.
It is shown in this paper that suitable weak solutions to the 6D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes and MHD equations are Hölder continuous near boundary provided that either $r^{-3}\int_{B_r^+}|u(x)|^3dx$ or $r^{-2}\int_{B_r^+}|\nabla u(x)|^2dx$ is sufficiently small, which implies that the 2D Hausdorff measure of the set of singular points near the boundary is zero. This generalizes recent interior regularity results by Dong-Strain \cite{DS}.
In the case of favorable pressure gradient, Oleinik proved the global existence of classical solution for the 2-D steady Prandtl equation for a class of positive data. In the case of adverse pressure gradient, an important physical phenomena is the boundary layer separation. In this paper, we prove the boundary layer separation for a large class of Oleinik's data and confirm Goldstein's hypothesis concerning the local behavior of the solution near the separation, which gives a partial answer to open problem 5 proposed by Oleinik and Samokin in \cite{Olei}.
In this paper, we investigate the Leray problem for steady Navier-Stokes system under full slip boundary conditions in a two dimensional channel with straight outlets. The existence of solutions with arbitrary flux in a general channel with slip boundary conditions is established, which tend to the shear flows at far fields. Furthermore, if the flux is suitably small, the solutions are proved to be unique. One of the crucial ingredients is to construct an appropriate flux carrier and to show a Hardy type inequality for flows with full slip boundary conditions.
This paper is concerned with qualitative properties of bounded steady flows of an ideal incompressible fluid with no stagnation point in the two-dimensional plane R^2. We show that any such flow is a shear flow, that is, it is parallel to some constant vector. The proof of this Liouville-type result is firstly based on the study of the geometric properties of the level curves of the stream function and secondly on the derivation of some estimates on the at most logarithmic growth of the argument of the flow. These estimates lead to the conclusion that the streamlines of the flow are all parall…
In this article we establish the validity of Prandtl layer expansions around Euler flows which are not shear. The presence of non-shear flows at the leading order creates a singularity of $o(\frac{1}{\sqrtε})$. A new $y$-weighted positivity estimate is developed to control this leading-order growth at the far field.
We consider a boundary-value problem describing the steady motion of a two-component mixture of viscous compressible heat-conducting fluids in a bounded domain. We make no simplifying assumptions except for postulating the coincidence of phase temperatures (which is physically justified in certain situations), that is, we retain all summands in equations that are a natural generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier model of the motion of a one-component medium. We prove the existence of weak generalized solutions of the problem.
We continue the study of the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansions in \cite{GZ}, where by estimating the stream-function of the remainder, we proved if the Euler flow is perturbation of shear flows when the width of domain is small. In this paper, we obtain a new derivatives estimate of stream-function away from the boundary layer and then prove the validity of expansions for any non-shear Euler flow, provided the width of domain is small.
In this paper, we study the diffusive limit of the steady state radiative heat transfer system for non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded domain with flat boundaries. A composite approximate solution is constructed using asymptotic analysis taking into account of the boundary layers. The convergence to the approximate solution in the diffusive limit is proved using a Banach fixed point theorem. The major difficulty lies on the nonlinear coupling between elliptic and kinetic transport equations. To overcome this problem, a spectral assumption ensuring the linear stability of…
