This paper concerns the Routh reduction procedure for Lagrangians systems with symmetry. It differs from the existing results on geometric Routh reduction in the fact that no regularity conditions on either the Lagrangian $L$ or the momentum map $J_L$ are required apart from the momentum being a regular value of $J_L$. The main results of this paper are: the description of a general Routh reduction procedure that preserves the Euler-Lagrange nature of the original system and the presentation of a presymplectic framework for Routh reduced systems. In addition, we provide a detailed description and interpretation of the Euler-Lagrange equations for the reduced system. The proposed procedure includes Lagrangian systems with a non-positively definite kinetic energy metric.
This note discusses Routh reduction for hybrid time-dependent mechanical systems. We give general conditions on whether it is possible to reduce by symmetries a hybrid time-dependent Lagrangian system extending and unifying previous results for continuous-time systems. We illustrate the applicability of the method using the example of a billiard with moving walls.
Routh reduction for Lagrangian systems with cyclic variable is presented as an example of Lagrangian reduction. It appears that Routhian, which is a generating object of reduced dynamics, is not a function any more but a section of a bundle of affine values.
In this paper we describe Routhian reduction as a special case of standard symplectic reduction, also called Marsden-Weinstein reduction. We use this correspondence to present a generalization of Routhian reduction for quasi-invariant Lagrangians, i.e. Lagrangians that are invariant up to a total time derivative. We show how functional Routhian reduction can be seen as a particular instance of reduction of a quasi-invariant Lagrangian, and we exhibit a Routhian reduction procedure for the special case of Lagrangians with quasi-cyclic coordinates. As an application we consider the dynamics of a…
This paper deals with the Lagrangian analogue of symplectic or point reduction by stages. We develop Routh reduction as a reduction technique that preserves the Lagrangian nature of the dynamics. To do so we heavily rely on the relation between Routh reduction and cotangent symplectic reduction. The main results in this paper are: (i) we develop a class of so called magnetic Lagrangian systems and this class has the property that it is closed under Routh reduction; (ii) we construct a transformation relating the magnetic Lagrangian system obtained after two subsequent Routh reductions and the …
We make use of a symmetry reduction technique called Routh reduction to show that the solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations of a strongly convex autonomous Lagrangian which lie on a specific energy level can be thought of as geodesics of an associated Finsler function.
In this paper, some new aspects related to Routh reduction of Lagrangian systems with symmetry are discussed. The main result of this paper is the introduction of a new concept of transformation that is applicable to systems obtained after Routh reduction of Lagrangian systems with symmetry, so-called magnetic Lagrangian systems. We use these transformations in order to show that, under suitable conditions, the reduction with respect to a (full) semi-direct product group is equivalent to the reduction with respect to an Abelian normal subgroup. The results in this paper are closely related to …
This paper contains results on geometric Routh reduction and it is a continuation of a previous paper where a new class of transformations is introduced between Lagrangian systems obtained after Routh reduction. In general, these reduced Lagrangian systems have magnetic force terms and are singular in the sense that the Lagrangian does not depend on some velocity components. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the Routh reduction process itself is entirely captured by the application of such a new transformation on the initial Lagrangian system with symmetry.
In the present work a Cartan mechanics version for Routh reduction is considered, as an intermediate step toward Routh reduction in field theory. Motivation for this generalization comes from an scheme for integrable systems [12], used for understanding the occurrence of Toda field theories in so called Hamiltonian reduction of WZNW field theories [11]. As a way to accomplish with this intermediate aim, this article also contains a formulation of the Lagrangian Adler-Kostant-Symes systems discussed in [12] in terms of Routh reduction.
We present a reduction theory for first order Lagrangian field theories which takes into account the conservation of momenta. The relation between the solutions of the original problem with a prescribed value of the momentum and the solutions of the reduced problem is established. An illustrative example is discussed in detail.
In this paper, we make a generalization of Routh's reduction method for Lagrangian systems with symmetry to the case where not any regularity condition is imposed on the Lagrangian. First, we show how implicit Lagrange-Routh equations can be obtained from the Hamilton-Pontryagin principle, by making use of an anholonomic frame, and how these equations can be reduced. To do this, we keep the momentum constraint implicit throughout and we make use of a Routhian function defined on a certain submanifold of the Pontryagin bundle. Then, we show how the reduced implicit Lagrange-Routh equations can …
An interpretation of Einstein-Hilbert gravity equations as Lagrangian reduction of Palatini gravity is made. The main technique involved in this task consists in representing the equations of motion as a set of differential forms on a suitable bundle. In this setting Einstein-Hilbert gravity can be considered as a kind of Routh reduction of the underlying field theory for Palatini gravity. As a byproduct of this approach, a novel set of conditions for the existence of a vielbein for a given metric is found.
We extend Routh's reduction procedure to an arbitrary Lagrangian system (that is, one whose Lagrangian is not necessarily the difference of kinetic and potential energies) with a symmetry group which is not necessarily Abelian. To do so we analyse the restriction of the Euler-Lagrange field to a level set of momentum in velocity phase space. We present a new method of analysis based on the use of quasi-velocities. We discuss the reconstruction of solutions of the full Euler-Lagrange equations from those of the reduced equations.
We discuss Lagrangian and Hamiltonian field theories that are invariant under a symmetry group. We apply the polysymplectic reduction theorem for both types of field equations and we investigate aspects of the corresponding reconstruction process. We identify the polysymplectic structures that lie at the basis of cotangent bundle reduction and Routh reduction in this setting and we relate them by means of the Routhian function and its associated Legendre transformation. We end the paper with examples that illustrate the applicability of our results.
The paper re-examines Milson's analysis of the rational Sturm-Liouville (RSL) problem with two complex conjugated regular singular points -i and +i by taking advantage of Stevenson's complex linear-fraction transformation S(y) of the variable y restricted to the real axis. It was explicitly demonstrated that Stevenson's hypergeometric polynomials in a complex argument S are nothing but Romanovsky polynomials converted from y to S. The use of Stevenson's mathematical arguments unambiguously confirmed 'exact solvability' of the Milson potential. It was revealed that the Milson potential has two …
This paper develops a generalized formulation of Lagrangian mechanics on fibered manifolds, together with a reduction theory for symmetries corresponding to Lie groupoid actions. As special cases, this theory includes not only Lagrangian reduction (including reduction by stages) for Lie group actions, but also classical Routh reduction, which we show is naturally posed in this fibered setting. Along the way, we also develop some new results for Lagrangian mechanics on Lie algebroids, most notably a new, coordinate-free formulation of the equations of motion. Finally, we extend the foregoing to…
Systems with singular higher order- Lagrangians are investigated by using the extended form of the canonical method. Besides, the canonical path integral formulation is generalized using the Hamilton- jacobi formulation to investigate singular systems
We develop a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for singular lagrangian systems in the Skinner-Rusk formalism. Comparisons with the Hamilton-Jacobi problem in the lagrangian and hamiltonian settings are discussed.
The path integral formulation of singular systems with second order Lagrangian is studied by using the canonical path integral method. The path integral of Podolsky electrodynamics is studied.
We develop a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for singular lagrangian systems using the Gotay-Nester-Hinds constraint algorithm. The procedure works even if the system has secondary constraints.
The link between the tratment of singular Lagrangians as field systems and the canonical Hamiltonian approach is studied. It is shown that the singular Lagrangians as field systems are always in exact agreement with the canonical approach for the parametrization invariant theories.
The investigation of approximate symmetries of reparametrization invariant Lagrangians of n + 1 degrees of freedom and quadratic velocities is presented. We show that extra conditions emerge which give rise to approximate and conditional Noether symmetries of such constrained actions. The Noether symmetries are the simultaneous conformal Killing vectors of both the kinetic metric and the potential. In order to recover these conditional symmetry generators which would otherwise be lost in gauge fixing the lapse function entering the perturbative Lagrangian, one must consider the lapse among the…
The properties of Lagrangians affine in velocities are analyzed in a geometric way. These systems are necessarily singular and exhibit, in general, gauge invariance. The analysis of constraint functions and gauge symmetry leads us to a complete classification of such Lagrangians.
The fibre derivative of a bundle map is studied in detail. In the particular case of a real function, several constructions useful to study singular lagrangians are presented. Some applications are given; in particular, a geometric construction useful to solve the Euler-Lagrange equation of a singular lagrangian. A free particle in a curved space-time is studied as an example.
In this paper we discuss singular Lagrangian systems on the framework of contact geometry. These systems exhibit a dissipative behavior in contrast with the symplectic scenario. We develop a constraint algorithm similar to the presymplectic one studied by Gotay and Nester (the geometrization of the well-known Dirac-Bergman algorithm). We also construct the Hamiltonian counterpart and prove the equivalence with the Lagrangian side. A Dirac-Jacobi bracket is constructed similar to the Dirac bracket.
The purpose of this paper is describe Lagrangian Mechanics for constrained systems on Lie algebroids, a natural framework which covers a wide range of situations (systems on Lie groups, quotients by the action of a Lie group, standard tangent bundles...). In particular, we are interested in two cases: singular Lagrangian systems and vakonomic mechanics (variational constrained mechanics). Several examples illustrate the interest of these developments.
We present a unified geometric framework for describing both the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms of contact autonomous mechanical systems, which is based on the approach of the pionnering work of R. Skinner and R. Rusk. This framework permits to skip the second order differential equation problem, which is obtained as a part of the constraint algorithm (for singular or regular Lagrangians), and is specially useful to describe singular Lagrangian systems. Some examples are also discussed to illustrate the method.

The time evolution operator $K$ is introduced in the graded context and its main properties are discussed. In particular, the operator $K$ is used to analize the projectability of constraint functions arising in the Lagrangian formalism for singular Lagrangians.
The k-symplectic formulation of field theories is especially simple, since only tangent and cotangent bundles are needed in its description. Its defining elements show a close relationship with those in the symplectic formulation of mechanics. It will be shown that this relationship also stands in the presymplectic case. In a natural way, one can mimick the presymplectic constraint algorithm to obtain a constraint algorithm that can be applied to $k$-presymplectic field theory, and more particularly to the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of field theories defined by a singular Lagrangi…
A comparative analysis of two different versions of the Legendre transformation is presented. We provide an almost complete although somewhat superficial review of the geometric background for analytical mechanics. Complete coordinate characterizations of all structures are provided. Intrinsic constructions of most of the objects are given. Examples of applications to a number of physical systems is given
New geometric structures that relate the lagrangian and hamiltonian formalisms defined upon a singular lagrangian are presented. Several vector fields are constructed in velocity space that give new and precise answers to several topics like the projectability of a vector field to a hamiltonian vector field, the computation of the kernel of the presymplectic form of lagrangian formalism, the construction of the lagrangian dynamical vector fields, and the characterisation of dynamical symmetries.
Lagrangian systems with nonholonomic constraints may be considered as singular differential equations defined by some constraints and some multipliers. The geometry, solutions, symmetries and constants of motion of such equations are studied within the framework of linearly singular differential equations. Some examples are given; in particular the well-known singular lagrangian of the relativistic particle, which with the nonholonomic constraint v^2=c^2 yields a regular system.
Textbook treatments of classical mechanics typically assume that the Lagrangian is nonsingular. That is, the matrix of second derivatives of the Lagrangian with respect to the velocities is invertible. This assumption insures that (i) Lagrange's equations can be solved for the accelerations as functions of coordinates and velocities, and (ii) the definition of the conjugate momenta can be inverted for the velocities as functions of coordinates and momenta. This assumption, however, is unnecessarily restrictive -- there are interesting classical dynamical systems with singular Lagrangians. The …
Using Monge-Ampère geometry, we study the singular structure of a class of nonlinear Monge-Ampère equations in three dimensions, arising in geophysical fluid dynamics. We extend seminal earlier work on Monge-Ampère geometry by examining the role of an induced metric on Lagrangian submanifolds of the cotangent bundle. In particular, we show that the signature of the metric serves as a classification of the Monge-Ampère equation, while singularities and elliptic-hyperbolic transitions are revealed by the degeneracies of the metric. The theory is illustrated by application to an example solution …
The jet bundle description of time-dependent mechanics is revisited. The constraint algorithm for singular Lagrangians is discussed and an exhaustive description of the constraint functions is given. By means of auxiliary connections we give a basis of constraint functions in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian sides. An additional description of constraints is also given considering at the same time compatibility, stability and second-order condition problems. Finally, a classification of the constraints in first and second class is obtained using a cosymplectic geometry setting. Using the second …
We introduce a version of the Hamiltonian formalism based on the Clairaut equation theory, which allows us a self-consistent description of systems with degenerate (or singular) Lagrangian. A generalization of the Legendre transform to the case, when the Hessian is zero is done using the mixed (envelope/general) solutions of the multidimensional Clairaut equation. The corresponding system of equations of motion is equivalent to the initial Lagrange equations, but contains "nondynamical" momenta and unresolved velocities. This system is reduced to the physical phase space and presented in the H…
In this paper we show how to compute algorithmically the full set of algebraically independent constraints for singular mechanical and field-theoretical models with polynomial Lagrangians. If a model under consideration is not singular as a whole but has domains of dynamical (field) variables where its Lagrangian becomes singular, then our approach allows to detect such domains and compute the relevant constraints. In doing so, we assume that the Lagrangian of a model is a differential polynomial and apply the differential Thomas decomposition algorithm to the Euler-Lagrange equations.
We analyze the properties that manifest Hamiltonian nature of the Schrödinger equation and show that it can be considered as originating from singular Lagrangian action (with two second class constraints presented in the Hamiltonian formulation). It is used to show that any solution to the Schrödinger equation with time independent potential can be presented in the form $Ψ=(-\frac{\hbar^2}{2m}\triangle+V)ϕ+i\hbar\partial_tϕ$, where the real field $ϕ(t, x^i)$ is some solution to nonsingular Lagrangian theory being specified below. Preservation of probability turns out to be the energy conservat…
Guided by the symmetries of the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion, a study of the constrained dynamics of singular Lagrangians is presented. We find that these equations of motion admit a generalized Lie symmetry, and on the Lagrangian phase space the generators of this symmetry lie in the kernel of the Lagrangian two-form. Solutions of the energy equation\textemdash called second-order, Euler-Lagrange vector fields (SOELVFs)\textemdash with integral flows that have this symmetry are determined. Importantly, while second-order, Lagrangian vector fields are not such a solution, it is always po…
There is a review of the main mathematical properties of system described by singular Lagrangians and requiring Dirac-Bergmann theory of constraints at the Hamiltonian level. The following aspects are discussed: i) the connection of the rank and eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix in the Euler-Lagrange equations with the chains of first and second class constraints; ii) the connection of the Noether identities of the second Noether theorem with the Hamiltonian constraints; iii) the Shanmugadhasan canonical transformation for the identification of the gauge variables and for the search of the Dir…
The Dirac-Bergmann algorithm is a recipe for converting a theory with a singular Lagrangian into a constrained Hamiltonian system. Constrained Hamiltonian systems include gauge theories -- general relativity, electromagnetism, Yang Mills, string theory, etc. The Dirac-Bergmann algorithm is elegant but at the same time rather complicated. It consists of a large number of logical steps linked together by a subtle chain of reasoning. Examples of the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm found in the literature are designed to isolate and illustrate just one or two of those logical steps. In this paper I analy…
