This note discusses Routh reduction for hybrid time-dependent mechanical systems. We give general conditions on whether it is possible to reduce by symmetries a hybrid time-dependent Lagrangian system extending and unifying previous results for continuous-time systems. We illustrate the applicability of the method using the example of a billiard with moving walls.
This paper concerns the Routh reduction procedure for Lagrangians systems with symmetry. It differs from the existing results on geometric Routh reduction in the fact that no regularity conditions on either the Lagrangian $L$ or the momentum map $J_L$ are required apart from the momentum being a regular value of $J_L$. The main results of this paper are: the description of a general Routh reduction procedure that preserves the Euler-Lagrange nature of the original system and the presentation of a presymplectic framework for Routh reduced systems. In addition, we provide a detailed description …
Routh reduction for Lagrangian systems with cyclic variable is presented as an example of Lagrangian reduction. It appears that Routhian, which is a generating object of reduced dynamics, is not a function any more but a section of a bundle of affine values.
In this paper we describe Routhian reduction as a special case of standard symplectic reduction, also called Marsden-Weinstein reduction. We use this correspondence to present a generalization of Routhian reduction for quasi-invariant Lagrangians, i.e. Lagrangians that are invariant up to a total time derivative. We show how functional Routhian reduction can be seen as a particular instance of reduction of a quasi-invariant Lagrangian, and we exhibit a Routhian reduction procedure for the special case of Lagrangians with quasi-cyclic coordinates. As an application we consider the dynamics of a…
This paper deals with the Lagrangian analogue of symplectic or point reduction by stages. We develop Routh reduction as a reduction technique that preserves the Lagrangian nature of the dynamics. To do so we heavily rely on the relation between Routh reduction and cotangent symplectic reduction. The main results in this paper are: (i) we develop a class of so called magnetic Lagrangian systems and this class has the property that it is closed under Routh reduction; (ii) we construct a transformation relating the magnetic Lagrangian system obtained after two subsequent Routh reductions and the …
We make use of a symmetry reduction technique called Routh reduction to show that the solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations of a strongly convex autonomous Lagrangian which lie on a specific energy level can be thought of as geodesics of an associated Finsler function.
In this paper, some new aspects related to Routh reduction of Lagrangian systems with symmetry are discussed. The main result of this paper is the introduction of a new concept of transformation that is applicable to systems obtained after Routh reduction of Lagrangian systems with symmetry, so-called magnetic Lagrangian systems. We use these transformations in order to show that, under suitable conditions, the reduction with respect to a (full) semi-direct product group is equivalent to the reduction with respect to an Abelian normal subgroup. The results in this paper are closely related to …
This paper contains results on geometric Routh reduction and it is a continuation of a previous paper where a new class of transformations is introduced between Lagrangian systems obtained after Routh reduction. In general, these reduced Lagrangian systems have magnetic force terms and are singular in the sense that the Lagrangian does not depend on some velocity components. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the Routh reduction process itself is entirely captured by the application of such a new transformation on the initial Lagrangian system with symmetry.
In the present work a Cartan mechanics version for Routh reduction is considered, as an intermediate step toward Routh reduction in field theory. Motivation for this generalization comes from an scheme for integrable systems [12], used for understanding the occurrence of Toda field theories in so called Hamiltonian reduction of WZNW field theories [11]. As a way to accomplish with this intermediate aim, this article also contains a formulation of the Lagrangian Adler-Kostant-Symes systems discussed in [12] in terms of Routh reduction.
We present a reduction theory for first order Lagrangian field theories which takes into account the conservation of momenta. The relation between the solutions of the original problem with a prescribed value of the momentum and the solutions of the reduced problem is established. An illustrative example is discussed in detail.
In this paper, we make a generalization of Routh's reduction method for Lagrangian systems with symmetry to the case where not any regularity condition is imposed on the Lagrangian. First, we show how implicit Lagrange-Routh equations can be obtained from the Hamilton-Pontryagin principle, by making use of an anholonomic frame, and how these equations can be reduced. To do this, we keep the momentum constraint implicit throughout and we make use of a Routhian function defined on a certain submanifold of the Pontryagin bundle. Then, we show how the reduced implicit Lagrange-Routh equations can …
An interpretation of Einstein-Hilbert gravity equations as Lagrangian reduction of Palatini gravity is made. The main technique involved in this task consists in representing the equations of motion as a set of differential forms on a suitable bundle. In this setting Einstein-Hilbert gravity can be considered as a kind of Routh reduction of the underlying field theory for Palatini gravity. As a byproduct of this approach, a novel set of conditions for the existence of a vielbein for a given metric is found.
We extend Routh's reduction procedure to an arbitrary Lagrangian system (that is, one whose Lagrangian is not necessarily the difference of kinetic and potential energies) with a symmetry group which is not necessarily Abelian. To do so we analyse the restriction of the Euler-Lagrange field to a level set of momentum in velocity phase space. We present a new method of analysis based on the use of quasi-velocities. We discuss the reconstruction of solutions of the full Euler-Lagrange equations from those of the reduced equations.
We discuss Lagrangian and Hamiltonian field theories that are invariant under a symmetry group. We apply the polysymplectic reduction theorem for both types of field equations and we investigate aspects of the corresponding reconstruction process. We identify the polysymplectic structures that lie at the basis of cotangent bundle reduction and Routh reduction in this setting and we relate them by means of the Routhian function and its associated Legendre transformation. We end the paper with examples that illustrate the applicability of our results.
This paper develops a generalized formulation of Lagrangian mechanics on fibered manifolds, together with a reduction theory for symmetries corresponding to Lie groupoid actions. As special cases, this theory includes not only Lagrangian reduction (including reduction by stages) for Lie group actions, but also classical Routh reduction, which we show is naturally posed in this fibered setting. Along the way, we also develop some new results for Lagrangian mechanics on Lie algebroids, most notably a new, coordinate-free formulation of the equations of motion. Finally, we extend the foregoing to…
Within the framework of Lagrangian mechanics, the conservativeness of the hydrostatic forces acting on a floating rigid body is proved. The representation of the associated hydrostatic potential is explicitly worked out. The invariance of the resulting Lagrangian with respect surge, sway and yaw motions is used in connection with the Routh procedure in order to convert the original dynamical problem into a reduced one, in three independent variables. This allows to put on rational grounds the study of hydrostatic equilibrium, introducing the concept of pseudo--stability, meant as stability wit…
Many Lagrangians of physical theories can be expressed as eigenvalues of certain, relatively simple, matrices involving Dirac gamma matrices. We give concrete examples for Lagrangian corresponding to a point particle coupled to electromagnetic field, electrodynamics, nonabelian gauge theories, extended objects and gravity. We also discuss (in case of a point particle) what are the implications of the least action principle applied to matrix Lagrangians.
Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian dynamical systems are well formalized mathematically. They give rise to geometric structures describing motion of a point in smooth manifolds. Riemannian metric is a different geometric structure formalizing concepts of length and angle. The interplay of Riemannian metric and its metric connection with mechanical structures produces some features which are absent in the case of general (non-Riemannian) manifolds. The aim of present paper is to discuss these features and develop special language for describing Newtonian, Lagrangian, and Hamiltonian dynamic…
An important problem in geometric quantization is that of quantizing certain classes of Lagrangian submanifolds, so-called Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds, equipped with a smooth half-density. A procedure for this in the complex projective setting is, roughly speaking, to apply the Szego kernel of the quantizing line bundle to a certain induced delta function supported on the submanifold. If the quantizing line bundle L is replaced by its k-th tensor power, and k tends to infinity, the resulting quantum states u_k concentrate asymptotically on the submanifold. This note deals with the …
This note is a modest addition to the work arXiv:2109.13952. Here we construct an embedding of the space of electrical networks to the totally non-negative Lagrangian Grassmannian in a generic situation with the help of the technique of vertex integrable models of statistical mechanics.
In this note we study the application of generalized fractional operators to a particular class of nonstandard Lagrangians. These are typical of dissipative systems and the corresponding Euler-Lagrange and Hamilton equations are analyzed. The dependence of the equation of motion on the generalized kernel permits to obtain a wide range of different configurations of motion. Some examples are discussed and analyzed.
The purpose of this note is to give a simple proof of the fact that a certain substack, defined in [2], of the moduli stack $T^{\ast}Bun_G(Σ)$ of Higgs bundles over a curve $Σ$, for a connected, simply connected semisimple group $G$, possesses a Lagrangian structure. The substack, roughly speaking, consists of images under the moment map of global sections of principal $G$-bundles over $Σ$ twisted by a smooth symplectic variety with a Hamiltonian $G$-action.
