In this, the first of two companion papers, we present a method for finding the gravitational self-force in a modified radiation gauge for a particle moving on a geodesic in a Schwarzschild or Kerr spacetime. An extension of an earlier result by Wald is used to show the spin-weight $\pm 2$ perturbed Weyl scalar ($ψ_0$ or $ψ_4$) determines the metric perturbation outside the particle up to a gauge transformation and an infinitesimal change in mass and angular momentum. A Hertz potential is used to construct the part of the retarded metric perturbation that involves no change in mass or angular momentum from $ψ_0$ in a radiation gauge. The metric perturbation is completed by adding changes in the mass and angular momentum of the background spacetime outside the radial coordinate $r_0$ of the particle in any convenient gauge. The resulting metric perturbation is singular on the trajectory of the particle and discontinuous across the sphere $r=r_0$. A mode-sum method can be used to renormalize the self-force, but the justification given in the published version of this paper \cite{sf2} referred to work by Sam Gralla \cite{gralla10} to justify the use of the renormalized self-force, and the radiation gauge we use does not satisfy the regularity conditions required by Gralla. Instead we show that the renormalized self-force, computed either from the retarded field for $r>r_0$ or for $r<r_0$ gives the correct equations of motion in a gauge smoothly related to a Lorenz gauge; and Pound et al. \cite{pmb13} argue that the average of the self-force obtained in the way described in our paper for $r>r_0$ and for $r<r_0$ gives the correct equation of motion for our gauge (what Pound et al. call the no-string gauge).
Point charge, radially moving in the vicinity of a black hole is considered. Electromagnetic field in wave zone and in the small neighbourhood of the charge is calculated. Numerical results of the calculation of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation of the point charge are presented. Covariant approach for the calculation of electromagnetic self-force is used for the case of the slowly moving charge. Numerical results for the self-force in the case of slow motion of the particle are obtained and compared to the results in literature.
We present numerical results for the gravitational self-force and redshift invariant calculated in the Regge-Wheeler and Easy gauges for circular orbits in a Schwarzschild background, utilizing the regularization framework introduced by Pound, Merlin, and Barack. The numerical calculation is performed in the frequency domain and requires the integration of a single second-order ODE, greatly improving computation times over more traditional Lorenz gauge numerical methods. A sufficiently high-order, analytic expansion of the Detweiler-Whiting singular field is gauge-transformed to both the Regge…
We extend previous work [arXiv:1908.09095] to the case of Maxwell's equations with a source. Our work shows how to construct a retarded vector potential for the Maxwell field on the Kerr-Newman background in a radiation gauge. As in our previous work, the vector potential has a "reconstructed" term obtained from a Hertz potential solving Teukolsky's equation with a source, and a "correction" term which is obtainable by a simple integration along outgoing principal null rays. The singularity structure of our vector potential is discussed in the case of a point particle source.
Continuing our analytic computation of the first-order self-force contribution to Detweiler's redshift variable we provide the exact expressions of the ninth and ninth-and-a-half post-Newtonian terms.
In classical electrodynamics, an accelerating charged body emits radiation and experiences a corresponding radiation-reaction force, or self force. We extend to higher order in the total charge a previous rigorous derivation of the electromagnetic self force in flat spacetime by Gralla, Harte, and Wald. The method introduced by Gralla, Harte, and Wald computes the self force from the Maxwell field equations and conservation of stress-energy in a limit where the charge, size, and mass of the body go to zero, and does not require regularization of a singular self field. For our higher order comp…
In this paper, we introduce and explore the properties of a new gauge choice for the vacuum Einstein equation inspired by the ingoing and outgoing radiation gauges (IRG, ORG) for the linearized vacuum Einstein equation introduced by Chrzanowski in his work on metric reconstruction [DOI:10.1103/PhysRevD.11.2042] on the Kerr background. It has been shown by Price, Shankar and Whiting [arXiv:gr-qc/0611070] that the IRG/ORG are consistent gauges for the linearized vacuum Einstein equation on Petrov type II backgrounds. In [arXiv:1903.03859], the ORG was used in proving linearized stability for the…
Cosmological solutions with a scalar field behaving as radiation are obtained, in the context of gravitational theory with dynamical time. The solution requires the spacial curvature of the universe k, to be zero, unlike the standard radiation solutions, which do not impose any constraint on the spacial curvature of the universe. This is because only such $ k=0 $ radiation solutions poses a homothetic Killimg vector. This kind of theory can be used to generalize electromagnetism and other gauge theories, in curved space time, and there are no deviations from standard gauge filed equation (like…
The exact metric of a Schwarzschild black hole in the true radiation gauge was recently reported. In this work, we base on this gravity and calculate the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles up to the fourth post-Minkowskian order. It is found that the result is consistent with the previous formulations for both the case of dropping the fourth-order contribution and the case of light deflection. Our result might be helpful for future high-accuracy observations.
The orbital period of a compact binary system decays mainly due to quadrupole gravitational radiation, which agrees with the observation to within one percent. Other types of radiation such as ultralight scalar or pseudoscalar radiation, massive vector boson radiation also contribute to the decay of orbital period as long as the mass of the emitted particle is less than the orbital frequency of the compact binary system. We obtain an expression of the energy loss due to the radiation of massive vector field from the neutron star-neutron star and neutron star-white dwarf binaries. Due to large …
We present a unified picture for the Schwinger effect and the Hawking radiation and address the gauge-gravity relation and the dS-AdS duality issue at the one-loop level. We propose a thermal interpretation for the Schwinger effect in an (A)dS space and in an Reissner-Nordström black hole. The emission of charged particles from the near-extremal charged black hole is proportional to the Schwinger effect in an AdS and to another Schwinger effect in a Rindler space accelerated by the surface gravity.
Radiation-reaction forces originating from the emission of gravitational waves (GW) bring binaries to close proximity and are thus responsible for virtually all the mergers that we can observe in GW interferometers. We show that there exists a supplementary radiation-reaction force between two binaries interacting gravitationally, changing in particular the decay rate of the semimajor axis under the emission of GW. This new binary-binary force is in some settings of the same order-of-magnitude than the usual 2.5PN force for an isolated binary and presents some striking features such as a depen…
Recently, Damour computed the radiation reaction on gravitational scattering as the (linear) response to the angular momentum loss which he found to be of ${\cal O}(G^2)$ in the gravitational constant. This is a puzzle because any amplitude calculation would produce both energy and angular momentum losses starting only at ${\cal O}(G^3)$. Another puzzle is that the resultant radiation reaction, of ${\cal O}(G^3)$, is nevertheless correct and confirmed by a number of direct calculations. We ascribe these puzzles to the BMS ambiguity in defining angular momentum. The loss of angular momentum is …
A unified field theory of all known basic forces and elementary particles is built based on the postulates of gauge invariance and coordinate independence along with general conformal scaling symmetry. The hyper-spin charge of a unified hyper-spinor field is conjectured to correlate with the dimension of hyper-spacetime. The minimal dimension of hyper-spacetime for the unity of quarks and leptons in the standard model is found to be $D_h=19$ with a bimaximal symmetry. A unified fundamental interaction is governed by hyper-spin gauge symmetry SP(1,$D_h$-1). We show gravitational origin of gauge…
