It is shown that Onsager's principle of the least dissipation of energy is equivalent to the maximum entropy production principle. It is known that solutions of the linearized Boltzmann equation make extrema of entropy production. It is argued, in the case of stationary processes, that this extremum is a maximum rather than a minimum.
The irreversible currents and entropy production rate of a dilute colloidal suspension are calculated using the linear irreversible thermodynamics and the linear response theory. The \anomalous" or \hidden" entropy recently discussed in the context of the stochastic thermodynamics is fully accounted in these classic frameworks. We show that the two distinct formulations lead to identical results as long as the local equilibrium assumption or, equivalently the linear response theory, is valid.
In the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, we study autonomous systems of reaction-diffusion equations to show how the entropy and free energy of an open and irreversible reactor depend on concentrations. To do this, we find a Lyapunov function that depends directly on the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the linearized problem valid for linear and asymptotically stable systems. By suggesting the role of this Lyapunov function as internal free energy, we were able to reflect the properties of the dynamical system directly into the second law of thermodynamics making a redefinition of the …
We use the general formulation of irreversible thermodynamics and study the minimally nonlinear irreversible model of heat engines operating between a time-varying hot heat source of finite size and a cold heat reservoir of infinite size. We find the criterion in which the optimized efficiency obtained by this minimally nonlinear irreversible heat engine can reach the reversible efficiency under the tight coupling condition: a condition of no heat leakage between the system and the reservoirs. We assume the rate of heat transfer from hot to cold heat reservoir obeys Fourier law and discuss phy…
Linear, irreversible thermodynamics predicts that the entropy production rate can become negative. We demonstrate this prediction for metals under AC-driving whose conductivity is well-described by the Drude-Sommerfeld model. We then show that these negative rates are fully compatible with stochastic thermodynamics, namely, that the entropy production does fulfill a fluctuation theorem. The analysis is concluded with the observation that the stochastic entropy production as defined by the surprisal or ignorance of the Shannon information does not agree with the phenomenological approach.
This work presents the thermodynamical analysis of the ballistic heat equation from the viewpoint of two approaches: Classical Irreversible Thermodynamics (CIT) and Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics (EIT). A formula for calculation of the entropy within the framework of EIT for the ballistic heat equation is derived in this work. Entropy is calculated for a sinusoidal initial temperature perturbation by using both approaches. The results obtained from CIT show that the entropy is a non-monotonic function and the entropy production can be negative. The results obtained with EIT show that the…

Lett. 98,40001(2012)],尽管耗散发动机和不可逆发动机彼此不等价。
The irreversible work during a driving protocol constitutes one of the most widely studied measures in non-equilibrium thermodynamics, as it constitutes a proxy for entropy production. In quantum systems, it has been shown that the irreversible work has an additional, genuinely quantum mechanical contribution, due to coherence produced by the driving protocol. The goal of this paper is to explore this contribution in systems that undergo a quantum phase transition. Substantial effort has been dedicated in recent years to understand the role of quantum criticality in work protocols. However, pr…
By considering an explicit nonequilibrium model, we analyze the statistics of the irreversible work, $w_{\rm irr}$, and irreversible entropy production, $Δ_i s$, within the stochastic energetics framework. Restating the second law of thermodynamics as a function of $w_{\rm irr}$, we introduce the explicit probability of violating the canonical form of that second law for a different set of parameters and initial conditions of the model. Moreover, we study the irreversible entropy production along the same lines, since it can be cast as a generalization of the irreversible work. From an informa…
Entropy production is a key quantity in any finite-time thermodynamic process. It is intimately tied with the fundamental laws of thermodynamics, embodying a tool to extend thermodynamic considerations all the way to non-equilibrium processes. It is also often used in attempts to provide the quantitative characterization of logical and thermodynamic irreversibility, stemming from processes in physics, chemistry and biology. Notwithstanding its fundamental character, a unifying theory of entropy production valid for general processes, both classical and quantum, has not yet been formulated. Dev…
In the present paper, a new model of the collision term, of the Boltzmann Kinetic equation dealing with binary gas mixture affected by a centrifugal field, is introduced. The new model is representing a modification of the BGK (Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook) model of the Boltzmann kinetic equation to be suitable for studying the influence of centrifugal field affected on gases mixture. The scientific achievement of the new model is that it is a very simple model without any mathematical complexity; but without any loss of generality. We shed light upon that the new model is satisfied the conservation …
We analyse non-equilibrium Carnot-like cycles built with a colloidal particle in a harmonic trap, which is immersed in a fluid that acts as a heat bath. Our analysis is carried out in the overdamped regime. The cycle comprises four branches: two isothermal processes and two \textit{locally} adiabatic ones. In the latter, both the temperature of the bath and the stiffness of the harmonic trap vary in time, but in such a way that the average heat vanishes for all times. All branches are swept at a finite rate and, therefore, the corresponding processes are irreversible, not quasi-static. Specifi…
Allen-Cahn (Ginzburg-Landau) dynamics for scalar fields with heat conduction is treated in rigid bodies using a non-equilibrium thermodynamic framework with weakly nonlocal internal variables. The entropy production and entropy flux is calculated with the classical method of irreversible thermodynamics by separating full divergences.
By making use of a recently proposed framework for the inference of thermodynamic irreversibility in bosonic quantum systems, we experimentally measure and characterize the entropy production rates in the non-equilibrium steady state of two different physical systems -- a micro-mechanical resonator and a Bose-Einstein condensate -- each coupled to a high finesse cavity and hence also subject to optical loss. Key features of our setups, such as cooling of the mechanical resonator and signatures of a structural quantum phase transition in the condensate are reflected in the entropy production ra…
The Carnot theorem, one expression of the second law of thermodynamics, places a fundamental upper bound on the efficiency of heat engines operating between two heat baths. The Carnot theorem can be stated in a more generalized form for heat engines operating with multiple heat baths, where the maximum efficiency is achieved for reversible heat engines operating quasistatically between two heat baths. In this study, we determine the irreversible efficiency of heat engines operating with multiple heat baths in a linear response regime, i.e., under small temperature differences and a slow variat…
Steepest-Entropy-Ascent and Maximal-Entropy-Production Dynamical Models of Irreversible Relaxation to Stable Equilibrium from Any Non-Equilibrium State. Unified Treatment for Six Non-Equilibrium Frameworks
In the present work, a power law dissipative Carnot like heat engine cycle of two irreversible isothermal and two irreversible adiabatic processes with finite time non-adiabatic dissipation is considered and the efficiency under two optimization criteria $\dotΩ$ figure of merit and efficient power, $χ_{ep}$ is studied. The generalized extreme bounds of the optimized efficiency under the above said optimization criteria are obtained. The lower and upper bounds of the efficiency for the low dissipation Carnot-like heat engine under these optimization criteria are obtained with dissipation level …
Boltzmann-Sanov and Cramer-Chernoff's theorems provide large deviation probabilities, entropy, and rate functions for the spatial distribution of systems and the total internal energy of an ensemble respectively. By the method of Lagrange's undetermined multipliers, the results of both theorems, the differentials of entropies or rate functions with respect to numbers of systems, establish the statistical equilibrium condition. We connect the large deviation statistics to the reversible and irreversible processes of the spatial arrangements of the systems and the energy exchange of the ensemble…
Several authors have proposed out of equilibrium thermal engines models, allowing optimization processes involving a trade off between the power output of the engine and its dissipation. These operating regimes are achieved by using objective functions such as the ecological function ($EF$). In order to measure the quality of the balance between these characteristic functions, it was proposed a relationship where power output and dissipation are evaluated in the above mentioned $EF$-regime and they are compared with respect to its values at the regime of maximum power output. We called this re…
