The irreversible work during a driving protocol constitutes one of the most widely studied measures in non-equilibrium thermodynamics, as it constitutes a proxy for entropy production. In quantum systems, it has been shown that the irreversible work has an additional, genuinely quantum mechanical contribution, due to coherence produced by the driving protocol. The goal of this paper is to explore this contribution in systems that undergo a quantum phase transition. Substantial effort has been dedicated in recent years to understand the role of quantum criticality in work protocols. However, practically nothing is known about how coherence contributes to it. To shed light on this issue, we study the entropy production in infinitesimal quenches of the one-dimensional XY model. For quenches in the transverse field, we find that for finite temperatures the contribution from coherence can, in certain cases, account for practically all of the entropy production. At low temperatures, however, the coherence presents a finite cusp at the critical point, whereas the entropy production diverges logarithmically. Alternatively, if the quench is performed in the anisotropy parameter, we find that there are situations where all of the entropy produced is due to quantum coherences.
We investigate the influences of quantum many-body effects, such as criticality and the existence of factorisation fields, in the thermodynamic cost of establishing a bonding link between two independent quantum spin chains. We provide a physical interpretation of the behavior of irreversible work spent in such process by linking the phenomenology of such quantities to the properties of the spectrum of the system
We compare the irreversible work produced in an infinitesimal sudden quench of a quantum system at zero temperature with its ground state fidelity susceptibility, giving an explicit relation between the two quantities. We find that the former is proportional to the latter but for an extra term appearing in the irreversible work which includes also contributions from the excited states. We calculate explicitly the two quantities in the case of the quantum Ising chain, showing that at criticality they exhibit different scaling behavior. The irreversible work, rescaled by square of the quench's a…
We study the dynamics of quantum coherence under Unruh thermal noise and seek under which condition the coherence can be frozen in a relativistic setting. We find that the frozen condition is either (i) the initial state is prepared as a incoherence state, or (ii) the detectors have no interaction with the external field. That is to say, the decoherence of detectors' quantum state is irreversible under the influence of thermal noise induced by Unruh radiation. It is shown that quantum coherence approaches zero only in the limit of an infinite acceleration, while quantum entanglement could redu…
We examine the dynamics after a sudden quench in the magnetic field of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. Starting from the groundstate and by employing the time-dependent fidelity, we see manifestly different dynamics are present if the system is quenched through the critical point. Furthermore, we show that the average work shows no sensitivity to the quantum phase transition, however the free energy and irreversible work show markedly different rates of change in each phase. Finally, we assess the spectral function showing the fundamental excitations that dictate the dynamics of the post-quenc…
In this paper, we show that an effective spin Hamiltonian with various types of couplings can be engineered using quantum simulators in atomic-molecular-optical laboratories, dubbed the \emph{XY}-Gamma model. We analytically solve the one-dimensional short-range interacting case with the Jordan-Wigner transformation and establish the phase diagram. In the gapless phase, an incommensurate spiral order is manifested by the vector-chiral correlations. Between distinct gapped phases, a logarithmic scaling behavior of local measures, including spin correlations and the steered quantum coherence, is…
We investigate the quantum phase transitions of the transverse-field quantum Ising model on the triangular lattice and Sierpiński fractal lattices by employing multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence along with the quantum renormalization group method. It is shown that the quantum criticalities of these high-dimensional models closely relate to the behaviors of the multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence. As the thermodynamic limit is approached, the first derivatives of multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence exhibit singular behaviors and the consistent finite-size sc…
We report on the observation of quantum criticality forming at the transition point between topological Anderson insulator phases in a one-dimensional photonic quantum walk with spin. The walker's probability distribution reveals a time-staggered profile of the dynamical spin-susceptibility, recently suggested as a smoking gun signature for topological Anderson criticality in the chiral symmetry class AIII. Controlled breaking of phase coherence removes the signal, revealing its origin in quantum coherence.
We introduce a coherence susceptibility method, based on the fact that it signals quantum fluctuations, for identifying quantum phase transitions, which are induced by quantum fluctuations. This method requires no prior knowledge of order parameter, and there is no need for careful considerations concerning the choice of a bipartition of the system. It can identify different types of quantum phase transition points exactly. At finite temperatures, where quantum criticality is influenced by thermal fluctuations, our method can pinpoint the temperature frame of quantum criticality, which perfect…
Recently, it has been realized that nonlocal disentanglement may take a finite time as opposite to the asymptotic decay of local coherences. We find in this paper that a sudden irreversible death of entanglement takes place in a two atom optical Stern-Gerlach model. In particular, the one degree non dissipative environment here considered suddenly destroys the initial entanglement of any Bell's states $\ket{ϕ^{\pm}}$ superposition.
In this review, we discuss the zero and finite temperature behavior of various bipartite quantum and total correlation measures, the skew information-based quantum coherence, and the local quantum uncertainty in the thermal ground state of the one-dimensional anisotropic XY model in transverse magnetic field. We compare the ability of considered measures to correctly detect or estimate the quantum critical point and the non-trivial factorization point possessed by the spin chain.
Exploiting the relative entropy of coherence, we isolate the coherent contribution in the energetics of a driven non-equilibrium quantum system. We prove that a division of the irreversible work can be made into a coherent and incoherent part, which provides an operational criterion for quantifying the coherent contribution in a generic non-equilibrium transformation on a closed quantum system. We then study such a contribution in two physical models of a driven qubit and kicked rotor. In addition, we also show that coherence generation is connected to the non-adiabaticity of a processes, for …
The emerging field of quantum thermodynamics is contributing important results and insights into archetypal many-body problems, including quantum phase transitions. Still, the question whether out-of-equilibrium quantities, such as fluctuations of work, exhibit critical scaling after a sudden quench in a closed system has remained elusive. Here, we take a novel approach to the problem by studying a quench across an impurity quantum critical point. By performing density matrix renormalization group computations on the two-impurity Kondo model, we are able to establish that the irreversible work…
The thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TURs), originally discovered for classical systems, dictate the trade-off between dissipation and fluctuations of irreversible current, specifying a minimal bound that constrains the two quantities. In a series of effort to extend the relation to the one under more generalized conditions, it has been noticed that the bound is less tight in open quantum processes. To study the origin of the loose bounds, we consider an external field-driven transition dynamics of two-level quantum system weakly coupled to the bosonic bath as a model of open quantum syste…
Quantum chaotic interacting $N$-particle systems are assumed to show fast and irreversible spreading of quantum information on short (Ehrenfest) time scales $\sim\!\log N$. Here we show that, near criticality, certain many-body systems exhibit fast initial scrambling, followed subsequently by oscillatory behavior between reentrant localization and delocalization of information in Hilbert space. We consider both integrable and nonintegrable quantum critical bosonic systems with attractive contact interaction that exhibit locally unstable dynamics in the corresponding many-body phase space of th…
We have prepared and detected quantum coherences with long dephasing times at the level of single trapped cesium atoms. Controlled transport by an "optical conveyor belt" over macroscopic distances preserves the atomic coherence with slight reduction of coherence time. The limiting dephasing effects are experimentally identified and are of technical rather than fundamental nature. We present an analytical model of the reversible and irreversible dephasing mechanisms. Coherent quantum bit operations along with quantum state transport open the route towards a "quantum shift register" of individu…
Quantum coherence reflects the origin of quantumness and might be capable of extracting the subtle nature of a system. We investigate the ground-state coherence and steered coherence in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model and show that they detect faithfully the quantum phase transitions of this model. Moreover, we carry out scaling analysis on the coherence and steered coherence by means of the continuous unitary transformation method and it is found that the scaling exponents are uniquely determined by the phase region of this model. These results may provide useful insights into the mechanism un…
In this work, we address the ground state properties of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg XYZ chain under the interplay of magnetic fields and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction which we interpret as an electric field. The identification of the regions of enhanced sensitivity determines criticality in this model. We calculate the Wigner-Yanase skew information (WYSI) as a coherence witness of an arbitrary two-qubit state under specific measurement bases. The WYSI is demonstrated to be a good indicator for detecting the quantum phase transitions. The finite-size scaling of coherence s…
Recent studies have developed fundamental limitations on nanoscale thermodynamics, in terms of a set of independent free energy relations. Here we show that free energy relations cannot properly describe quantum coherence in thermodynamic processes. By casting time-asymmetry as a quantifiable, fundamental resource of a quantum state we arrive at an additional, independent set of thermodynamic constraints that naturally extend the existing ones. These asymmetry relations reveal that the traditional Szilard engine argument does not extend automatically to quantum coherences, but instead only rel…
The Landauer principle states that any logically irreversible information processing must be accompanied by dissipation into the environment. In this study, we investigate the heat dissipation associated with finite-time information erasure and the effect of quantum coherence in such processes. By considering a scenario wherein information is encoded in an open quantum system whose dynamics are described by the Markovian Lindblad equation, we show that the dissipated heat is lower-bounded by the conventional Landauer cost, as well as a correction term inversely proportional to the operational …

We establish an operational theory of coherence (or of superposition) in quantum systems, by focusing on the optimal rate of performance of certain tasks. Namely, we introduce the two basic concepts - "coherence distillation" and "coherence cost" in the processing quantum states under so-called incoherent operations [Baumgratz/Cramer/Plenio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113:140401 (2014)]. We then show that in the asymptotic limit of many copies of a state, both are given by simple single-letter formulas: the distillable coherence is given by the relative entropy of coherence (in other words, we give the …
Understanding the interplay between quantum coherence and non-Hermitian features would enable the devising of quantum technologies based on dissipative systems. In turn, quantum coherence can be characterized in terms of the language of multiple quantum coherences (MQCs) originally developed in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), nowadays applied to the detection of quantum chaos, and to the study of criticality in many-body quantum systems. Here we show the usefulness of MQCs for probing equilibrium phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems. To do so, we investigate the connection …
Symmetries of both closed and open-system dynamics imply many significant constraints. These generally have instantiations in both classical and quantum dynamics (Noether's theorem, for instance, applies to both sorts of dynamics). We here provide an example of such a constraint which has no counterpart for a classical system, that is, a uniquely quantum consequence of symmetric dynamics. Specifically, we demonstrate the impossibility of broadcasting asymmetry (symmetry-breaking) relative to a continuous symmetry group, for bounded-size quantum systems. The no-go theorem states that if two ini…
We study the Markovian dynamics of a collection of n quantum systems coupled to an irreversible environmental channel consisting of a stream of n entangled qubits. Within the framework of repeated quantum interactions, we derive the master equation that describes the dynamics of the composite quantum system. We investigate the evolution of the joint system for two-qubit environments and find that (1) the presence of antidiagonal coherences (in the local basis) in the environment is a necessary condition for entangling two remote systems, and (2) that maximally entangled two-qubit baths are an …
If the unitary quantum mechanical state evolution is universally valid, quantized systems evolve uniformly, deterministically, and reversible; that is, one-to-one. Hence, what is considered an irreversible measurement might be a purely subjective, conventional, and convenient abstraction of the situation that, although in principal totally reversible, for all practical purposes (fapp), measurements cannot be undone. If this is granted, then Schroedinger's "quantum jellification" arises because of the inevitability of the physical co-existence of classically mutually exclusive states through qu…
Quantum resource theories have been widely studied to systematically characterize the non-classicality of quantum systems. Most resource theories focus on quantum states and study their interconversions. Although quantum channels are generally used as the tool for state manipulation, such a manipulation capability can be naturally regarded as a generalized quantum resource, leading to an open research direction in the resource theories of quantum channels. Various resource-theoretic properties of channels have been investigated, however, without treating channels themselves as operational reso…
In this sequel paper we explore how macroscopic quantum phenomena can be measured or understood from the behavior of quantum correlations which exist in a quantum system of many particles or components and how the interaction strengths change with energy or scale, under ordinary situations and when the system is near its critical point. We use the nPI (master) effective action related to the Boltzmann-BBGKY / Schwinger-Dyson hierarchy of equations as a tool for systemizing the contributions of higher order correlation functions to the dynamics of lower order correlation functions. Together wit…
Dissipation, the irreversible loss of energy and coherence, from a microsystem, is the result of coupling to a much larger macrosystem (or reservoir) which is so large that one has no chance of keeping track of all of its degrees of freedom. The microsystem evolution is then described by tracing over the reservoir states, resulting in an irreversible decay as excitation leaks out of the initially excited microsystems into the outer reservoir environment. Earlier treatments of this dissipation described an ensemble of microsystems using density matrices, either in Schroedinger picture with Mast…

When an open system is contacted with several thermal baths, the entropy produced by the irreversible processes ($dS_{\mathrm{i}}=dS-\sum_α\textđQ_α/T_α$) keeps increasing, and this entropy production rate is always non-negative. But when the system is contacted with some non-thermal baths containing quantum coherence or squeezing, this entropy production formula does not apply. In this paper, we study the increasing rate of the mutual information between the open system and its environment. When the baths are canonical thermal ones, we prove that this mutual information production rate could …
