Spatial resolution of most imaging devices is fundamentally restricted by diffraction. This limitation is manifested in the loss of high spatial frequency information contained in evanescent waves. As a result, conventional far-field optics yields no information about an object's subwavelength features. Here we propose a novel approach to recovering evanescent waves in the far field, thereby enabling subwavelength-resolved imaging and spatial spectroscopy. Our approach relies on shifting the frequency and the wave vector of near-field components via scattering on acoustic phonons. This process effectively removes the spatial frequency cut-off for unambiguous far field detection. A straightforward extension of this technique, which we call spatial Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, allows to preserve phase information, making it possible to perform 3D subwavelength imaging. We discuss the implementation of such a system in the mid-IR and THz bands, with possible extension to other spectral regions.

We report on a technically simple approach to achieve high-resolution and high-sensitivity Fourier-domain OCT imaging in the mid-infrared range. The proposed OCT system employs an InF3 supercontinuum source. A specially designed dispersive scanning spectrometer based on a single InAsSb point detector is employed for detection. The spectrometer enables structural OCT imaging in the spectral range from 3140 nm to 4190 nm with a characteristic sensitivity of over 80 dB and an axial resolution below 8 um. The capabilities of the system are demonstrated for imaging of porous ceramic samples and tra…

Nonlinear interferometers allow for mid-infrared spectroscopy with near-infrared detection using correlated photons. Previous implementations have demonstrated a spectral resolution limited by spectrally selective detection. In our work, we demonstrate mid-infrared transmission spectroscopy in a nonlinear interferometer using single-pixel near-infrared detection and Fourier-transform analysis. A sub-wavenumber spectral resolution allows for rotational-line-resolving spectroscopy of gaseous samples in a spectral bandwidth of over 700$\,$cm$^{-1}$. We use methane transmission spectra around 3.3$…
We demonstrate a 13-fold speed improvement in broadband cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (CEPAS) by combining it with phase-controlled Fourier-transform spectroscopy (PC-FTS) instead of traditional Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). PC-FTS is a modification of FTIR and capable of fundamentally faster interferogram acquisitions. The speed-improvement is beneficial for CEPAS, which is an especially sensitive version of the background-free photoacoustic spectroscopy technique. We used the PC-FTS-CEPAS technique to measure the absorption spectrum of methane in the mid-in…
Nonlinear interferometers allow spectroscopy in the mid-infrared range by detecting correlated visible light, for which non-cooled detectors with higher specific detectivity and lower dark count rates are available. We present a new approach for the registration of spectral information, which combines a nonlinear interferometer using non-degenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) with a Fourier-transform spectroscopy concept. In order to increase the spectral coverage, we use broadband non-collinear SPDC in periodically poled LiNbO$_3$. Without the need for spectrally selective d…
Photonic crystals (PCs) offer unique ways to control light-matter interactions. The measurement of dispersion relations is a fundamental prerequisite if we are to create novel functionalities in PC devices. Angle-resolved spectroscopic techniques are commonly used for characterizing PCs that work in the visible and near-infrared regions. However, the techniques cannot be applied to the mid- and long-wavelength infrared regions due to the limited sensitivity of infrared detectors. Here, we propose an alternative approach to measuring infrared dispersion relations. We construct a high-precision …
Harnessing the quantum interference of photon-pair generation processes, infrared quantum absorption spectroscopy (IRQAS) can extract the infrared optical properties of a sample through visible or near-infrared photon detection without the need for an infrared optical source or detector, which has been an obstacle for higher sensitivity and spectrometer miniaturization. However, experimental demonstrations have been limited to wavelengths shorter than 5 um or in the terahertz region, and have not been realized in the so-called fingerprint region of 1500- 500 cm^-1 (6.6 to 20 um), which is comm…
Researchers from a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines are increasingly using near-field infrared spectroscopic techniques to characterize materials nondestructively and with nanoscale spatial resolution. However, sub-optimal understanding of a technique's implementation can complicate data interpretation and even act as a barrier to enter the field. Here we outline the key detection and processing steps involved in producing scattering-type near-field nanoscale Fourier transform infrared spectra (nano-FTIR). The largely self-contained work (i) explains how normalized comp…
Integrated mid-infrared micro-spectrometers have a great potential for applications in environmental monitoring and space exploration. Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) is a promising platform to tackle this integration challenge, due to its unique capability for large volume and low-cost production of ultra-compact photonic circuits. However, the use of SOI in the mid-infrared is restricted by the strong absorption of the buried oxide layer for wavelengths beyond 4 μm. Here, we overcome this limitation by utilizing metamaterial-cladded suspended silicon waveguides to implement a spatial heterodyne F…
A micro-ring-resonator (MRR) optical biosensor based on the evanescent field sensing mechanism has been extensively studied due to its high sensitivity and compact device size. However, a suitable on-chip integrated spectrometer device has to be demonstrated for the lab-on-a-chip applications, which can read the resonance wavelength shift from MRR biosensors based on minuscule changes in refractive index. In this paper, we demonstrated the design and experimental results of the near-infrared lab-on-a-chip optical biosensor platform that monolithically integrates the MRR and the on-chip spectro…
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers have been the dominant technology in the field of mid-infrared (MIR)spectroscopy for decades. Supercontinuum laser sources operating in the MIR spectral region now offer the potential to enrich the field of FTIR spectroscopy due to their distinctive properties, such as high-brightness, broadband spectral coverage and enhanced stability. In our contribution, we introduce this advanced light source as a replacement for conventional thermal emitters. Furthermore, an approach to efficient coupling of pulsed MIR supercontinuum sources to FTIR spectrom…
The on-chip broadband optical spectrometers which cover the entire tissue transparency window (λ=650-1050 nm) with high resolution are highly demanded for the miniaturized bio-sensing and bio-imaging applications. Here, we propose a novel type of spatial heterodyne Fourier transform spectrometer (SHFTS) integrated with a sub-wavelength grating coupler (SWGC) for the dual-polarization bandpass sampling on the Si3N4 platform. Through tuning the coupling angles with different polarization, we experimentally demonstrated the unprecedented broadband spectrum retrieval results with the overall bandw…
Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM), and its derivate, Fourier transform infrared nanospectroscopy (nano-FTIR) are emerging techniques for infrared (IR) nanoimaging and spectroscopy with applications in diverse fields ranging from nanophotonics, chemical imaging and materials science. However, spectroscopic nanoimaging is still challenged by the limited acquisition rate of current nano-FTIR technology. Here we combine s-SNOM, nano-FTIR and synthetic optical holographic (SOH) to achieve infrared spectroscopic nanoimaging at unprecedented speed (8 spectroscopically re…
We use optical frequency comb Fourier transform spectroscopy to measure high-resolution spectra of iodomethane, CH$_3$I in the C-H stretch region from 2800 to 3160 cm$^{-1}$. The fast-scanning Fourier transform spectrometer with auto-balanced detection is based on a difference frequency generation comb with repetition rate, f$_{rep}$, of 125 MHz. A series of spectra with sample point spacing equal to f$_{rep}$ are measured at different f$_{rep}$ settings and interleaved to yield sampling point spacing of 11 MHz. Iodomethane is introduced into a 76 m long multipass absorption cell by its vapor …

The cavity decays are measured simultaneously and spectrally sorted, leading to purely exponential decays for each spectral element. The absorption spectra of atmospheric water and carbon dioxide are retrieved and demonstrate the high frequency resolution and absorption precision of the technique. The experimental apparatus, the measurement concept and the data treatment are described. The technique benefits from the advantages of cavity …
In this study, we investigate the use of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to inspect the formation of corrosion products on galvanised carbon steel samples. Ten samples were subjected to an accelerated corrosion test with different exposure times. The analysis is performed in a two-step procedure: First, the different corrosion minerals are identified by microscopic Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) at specific locations on the samples. The following corrosion minerals are identified: ZnO (zincite/zinc oxide) Zn5(OH)8Cl2 H2O (simonkolleite), ZnCO3 (smithsonite), Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 (marioni…

The road towards the realization of quantum cascade laser (QCL) frequency combs (QCL-combs) has undoubtedly attracted ubiquitous attention from the scientific community, as these devices promise to deliver all-in-one (i.e. a single, miniature, active devices) frequency comb (FC) synthesizers in a range as wide as QCL spectral coverage itself (from about 4 microns to the THz range), with the unique possibility to tailor their spectral emission by band structure engineering. For these reasons, vigorous efforts have been spent to characterize the emission of four-wave-mixing multi-frequency devic…
Infrared nanospectroscopy based on Fourier transform infrared near-field spectroscopy (nano-FTIR) is an emerging nanoanalytical tool with large application potential for label-free mapping and identification of organic and inorganic materials with nanoscale spatial resolution. However, the detection of thin molecular layers and nanostructures on standard substrates is still challenged by weak signals. Here, we demonstrate a significant enhancement of nano-FTIR signals of a thin organic layer by exploiting polariton-resonant tip-substrate coupling and surface polariton illumination of the probi…
Fourier light-field microscopy (FLFM) uses a micro-lens array (MLA) to segment the Fourier Plane of the microscopic objective lens to generate multiple two-dimensional perspective views, thereby reconstructing the three-dimensional(3D) structure of the sample using 3D deconvolution calculation without scanning. However, the resolution of FLFM is still limited by diffraction, and furthermore, dependent on the aperture division. In order to improve its resolution, a Super-resolution optical fluctuation Fourier light field microscopy (SOFFLFM) was proposed here, in which the Sofi method with abil…
We found that temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopy measurements (i.e., reflectance or transmittance) using a Fourier-transform spectrometer can have substantial errors, especially for elevated sample temperatures and collection using an objective lens (e.g., using an infrared microscope). These errors arise as a result of partial detector saturation due to thermal emission from the measured sample reaching the detector, resulting in nonphysical apparent reduction of reflectance or transmittance with increasing sample temperature. Here, we demonstrate that these temperature-dependent err…
We report multipass broadband photoacoustic spectroscopy of trace gases in the mid-infrared. The measurement principle of the sensor relies on supercontinuum-based Fourier transform photoacoustic spectroscopy (FT-PAS), in which a scanning interferometer modulates the intensity of a mid-infrared supercontinuum light source and a cantilever microphone is employed for sensitive photoacoustic detection. With a custom-built external Herriott cell, the supercontinuum beam propagates ten times through a miniature and acoustically non-resonant gas cell. The performance of the FT-PAS system is demonstr…
