Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is the golden standard of mid-infrared (MIR) molecular spectroscopic analysis through optically-encoded vibrational signatures. Michelson-type FTIR and MIR dual-comb spectrometers allow us to simultaneously investigate multiple molecular species via the broadband and high-resolution spectroscopic capabilities. However, these are not applicable to high-speed measurements due to the low temporal resolution which is fundamentally limited by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this study, we develop a high-speed FTIR spectroscopy technique called phase-controlled Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (PC-FTIR) that has the capability to measure MIR absorption spectra at a rate of above 10 kHz. PC-FTIR demonstrates the high scan rate with a high SNR for various spectral bandwidths by arbitrarily adjusting the instrumental spectral resolution. As a proof of principle demonstration, we measure high-speed mixing dynamics of two liquids at a rate of 24 kHz. We also measure MIR spectra of gas-phase molecules with higher spectral resolution at a rate of 12 kHz. This high-speed MIR spectrometer could be especially useful for measuring non-repetitive fast phenomena and acquiring a large amount spectral data within a short time.
We propose a method to directly visualize the photonic band-structure of micron size photonic crystals using wide angle spectroscopy. By extending Fourier Imaging Spectroscopy sensitivity into the infrared range we have obtained accurate measurements of the band-structures along the high-symmetry directions (X-W-K-L-U) of polymeric three-dimensional rod-connected diamond photonic crystals. Our implementation also allows us to record single-wavelength reflectance far field patterns showing a very good agreement with simulations of the same designs. This technique is suitable for the characteriz…
The spectral resolution of broadband Fourier-transform coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy is limited by the maximum optical path length difference that can be scanned within a short time in an interferometer. However, alternatives to the Fourier-transform exist which can bypass this limitation with certain assumptions. We apply one such approach to broadband coherent Raman spectroscopy using interferometers with short delay line (low Fourier spectral resolution) and large delay line (high Fourier spectral resolution). With this method, we demonstrate broadband coherent Raman spectroscopy …
Spatial resolution of most imaging devices is fundamentally restricted by diffraction. This limitation is manifested in the loss of high spatial frequency information contained in evanescent waves. As a result, conventional far-field optics yields no information about an object's subwavelength features. Here we propose a novel approach to recovering evanescent waves in the far field, thereby enabling subwavelength-resolved imaging and spatial spectroscopy. Our approach relies on shifting the frequency and the wave vector of near-field components via scattering on acoustic phonons. This process…
We report on a technically simple approach to achieve high-resolution and high-sensitivity Fourier-domain OCT imaging in the mid-infrared range. The proposed OCT system employs an InF3 supercontinuum source. A specially designed dispersive scanning spectrometer based on a single InAsSb point detector is employed for detection. The spectrometer enables structural OCT imaging in the spectral range from 3140 nm to 4190 nm with a characteristic sensitivity of over 80 dB and an axial resolution below 8 um. The capabilities of the system are demonstrated for imaging of porous ceramic samples and tra…
We experimentally demonstrate in a difference-frequency generation mid-infrared frequency comb source the effect of temporal overlap between pump- and signal- pulse to the relative intensity noise (RIN) of the idler pulse. When scanning the temporal delay between our 130 fs long signal- and pump pulses, we observe a RIN minimum with a 3 dB width of 20 fs delay and an RIN increase of 20 dB in 40 fs delay at the edges of this minimum. We also demonstrate active long-term stabilization of the mid-infrared frequency comb source to the temporal overlap setting corresponding to the lowest RIN operat…
Nonlinear interferometers allow for mid-infrared spectroscopy with near-infrared detection using correlated photons. Previous implementations have demonstrated a spectral resolution limited by spectrally selective detection. In our work, we demonstrate mid-infrared transmission spectroscopy in a nonlinear interferometer using single-pixel near-infrared detection and Fourier-transform analysis. A sub-wavenumber spectral resolution allows for rotational-line-resolving spectroscopy of gaseous samples in a spectral bandwidth of over 700$\,$cm$^{-1}$. We use methane transmission spectra around 3.3$…
We demonstrate a 13-fold speed improvement in broadband cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (CEPAS) by combining it with phase-controlled Fourier-transform spectroscopy (PC-FTS) instead of traditional Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). PC-FTS is a modification of FTIR and capable of fundamentally faster interferogram acquisitions. The speed-improvement is beneficial for CEPAS, which is an especially sensitive version of the background-free photoacoustic spectroscopy technique. We used the PC-FTS-CEPAS technique to measure the absorption spectrum of methane in the mid-in…
Accurate characterization of thermal emitters can be challenging due to the presence of background thermal emission from components of the experimental setup and the surrounding environment. This is especially true for an emitter operating close to room temperature. Here, we explore characterization of near-room-temperature thermal emitters using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. We find that the thermal background arising from optical components placed between the beam splitter and the detector in an FTIR spectrometer appears as a "negative" contribution to the Fourier-transform…
Nonlinear interferometers allow spectroscopy in the mid-infrared range by detecting correlated visible light, for which non-cooled detectors with higher specific detectivity and lower dark count rates are available. We present a new approach for the registration of spectral information, which combines a nonlinear interferometer using non-degenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) with a Fourier-transform spectroscopy concept. In order to increase the spectral coverage, we use broadband non-collinear SPDC in periodically poled LiNbO$_3$. Without the need for spectrally selective d…
Photonic crystals (PCs) offer unique ways to control light-matter interactions. The measurement of dispersion relations is a fundamental prerequisite if we are to create novel functionalities in PC devices. Angle-resolved spectroscopic techniques are commonly used for characterizing PCs that work in the visible and near-infrared regions. However, the techniques cannot be applied to the mid- and long-wavelength infrared regions due to the limited sensitivity of infrared detectors. Here, we propose an alternative approach to measuring infrared dispersion relations. We construct a high-precision …
Harnessing the quantum interference of photon-pair generation processes, infrared quantum absorption spectroscopy (IRQAS) can extract the infrared optical properties of a sample through visible or near-infrared photon detection without the need for an infrared optical source or detector, which has been an obstacle for higher sensitivity and spectrometer miniaturization. However, experimental demonstrations have been limited to wavelengths shorter than 5 um or in the terahertz region, and have not been realized in the so-called fingerprint region of 1500- 500 cm^-1 (6.6 to 20 um), which is comm…
Understanding the dynamics of Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) lasers is crucial for determining physical coherence limits, and for finding new superior methods for experimental realization. In addition, the rich interplay of linear and nonlinear effects in a laser ring system is of great theoretical interest. Here we investigate the dynamics of a highly dispersion-compensated setup, where over a bandwidth of more than 100 nm, a highly coherent output with nearly shot-noise-limited intensity fluctuations was experimentally demonstrated. This output is called the sweet-spot. We show by numeric…
We report the performance of a silicon wafer beamsplitter for use for low $Δν>0.3 cm^{-1}$ resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy at far infrared frequencies. We characterize the Si beamsplitter by comparing throughput spectra measured with it to those measured with the standard Mylar beamsplitters commonly used in that range. We find that the throughput of the silicon beamsplitter is substantially greater than that of the Mylar beamsplitters over most of the IR spectrum, and that they are comparable in some limited ranges. The 2 mm silicon beamsplitter has an etalon spacing of about 0.7 cm…
Researchers from a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines are increasingly using near-field infrared spectroscopic techniques to characterize materials nondestructively and with nanoscale spatial resolution. However, sub-optimal understanding of a technique's implementation can complicate data interpretation and even act as a barrier to enter the field. Here we outline the key detection and processing steps involved in producing scattering-type near-field nanoscale Fourier transform infrared spectra (nano-FTIR). The largely self-contained work (i) explains how normalized comp…
Integrated mid-infrared micro-spectrometers have a great potential for applications in environmental monitoring and space exploration. Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) is a promising platform to tackle this integration challenge, due to its unique capability for large volume and low-cost production of ultra-compact photonic circuits. However, the use of SOI in the mid-infrared is restricted by the strong absorption of the buried oxide layer for wavelengths beyond 4 μm. Here, we overcome this limitation by utilizing metamaterial-cladded suspended silicon waveguides to implement a spatial heterodyne F…
An influence of plasma channel created by a filament of focused UV or IR femtosecond laser pulse (λ=248 nm or 740 nm) on characteristics of other plasma channel formed by a femtosecond pulse at the same wavelength following the first one with varied nanosecond time delay was experimentally studied. A dependence of optical transparency of the first channel and plasma density of the second channel on the time delay was demonstrated to be quite different for such a double UV and IR femtosecond pulses.
Optical frequency-comb-based-high-resolution spectrometers offer enormous potential for spectroscopic applications. Although various implementations have been demonstrated, the lack of suitable mid-infrared comb sources has impeded explorations of molecular fingerprinting. Here we present for the first time a frequency-comb Fourier transform spectrometer operating in the 2100-to-3700-cm-1 spectral region that allows fast and simultaneous acquisitions of broadband absorption spectra with up to 0.0056 cm-1 resolution. We demonstrate part-per-billion detection limits in 30 seconds of integration …
Coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation produced by table-top high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources provides a wealth of possibilities in research areas ranging from attosecond physics to high resolution coherent imaging. However, it remains challenging to fully exploit the coherence of such sources for interferometry and Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS). This is due to the need for a measurement system that is stable at the level of a wavelength fraction, yet allowing a controlled scanning of time delays. Here we demonstrate XUV interferometry and FTS in the 17-55 nm wavelength rang…
We use two femtosecond Erbium-doped fiber lasers with slightly different repetition rates to perform a modern type of Fourier transform spectroscopy without moving parts. The measurements are done in real time, and it takes less than 50 microseconds. We work with somewhat different spectral outputs from two Erbium-doped fiber lasers and employ spectral filtering based on a 2f-2f grating setup to select the common spectral region of interest, thereby increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. The interferogram is taken with a 20 cm long gas cell, containing a mixture of acetylene and air at atmosphe…
A laser source delivering ultrashort pulses (50-100 fs) tunable from 820 nm to 1200 nm has been developed. It is based on the filtering of a continuum in the Fourier plane of a zero dispersion line without a phase compensator. We have also numerically investigated the impact of the residual spectral phase in order to guarantee ultrashort pulses.
The blooming of attosecond science (1 as = $10^{-18}$ s) has raised the need to exquisitely control the delay between two ultrashort light pulses, one of them being intense and in the visible spectral range, while the second is weak and in the Extreme Ultra-Violet spectral range. Here we introduce a robust technique, named LIZARD (Laser-dressed IoniZation for the Adjustment of the pump-pRobe Delay), allowing an active stabilization of this pump-probe delay. The originality of the method lies in an error signal calculated from a two-photon photoelectron signal obtained by photoionizing a gas ta…
A micro-ring-resonator (MRR) optical biosensor based on the evanescent field sensing mechanism has been extensively studied due to its high sensitivity and compact device size. However, a suitable on-chip integrated spectrometer device has to be demonstrated for the lab-on-a-chip applications, which can read the resonance wavelength shift from MRR biosensors based on minuscule changes in refractive index. In this paper, we demonstrated the design and experimental results of the near-infrared lab-on-a-chip optical biosensor platform that monolithically integrates the MRR and the on-chip spectro…
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers have been the dominant technology in the field of mid-infrared (MIR)spectroscopy for decades. Supercontinuum laser sources operating in the MIR spectral region now offer the potential to enrich the field of FTIR spectroscopy due to their distinctive properties, such as high-brightness, broadband spectral coverage and enhanced stability. In our contribution, we introduce this advanced light source as a replacement for conventional thermal emitters. Furthermore, an approach to efficient coupling of pulsed MIR supercontinuum sources to FTIR spectrom…
The JILA Multidimensional Optical Nonlinear SpecTRometer (JILA-MONSTR) is a robust, ultra-stable platform consisting nested and folded Michelson interferometers that can be actively phase stabilized. This platform generates a square of identical laser pulses that can be adjusted to have arbitrary time delay between them, while maintaining phase stability. The JILA-MONSTR provides output pulses for nonlinear excitation of materials and phase-stabilized reference pulses for heterodyne detection of the induced signal. This arrangement is ideal for performing coherent optical experiments, such as …
Fourier-transform spectroscopy (FTS) has been widely used as a standard analytical technique over the past half-century. FTS is a simple and robust autocorrelation-based technique that is compatible with both temporally coherent and incoherent light sources, which functions as an active or passive spectrometer. However, this technique has been mostly used for static measurements due to the low scan rate imposed by technological restrictions. This has impeded its application to continuous rapid measurements, which would be of significant interest for a variety of fields, especially when monitor…
The on-chip broadband optical spectrometers which cover the entire tissue transparency window (λ=650-1050 nm) with high resolution are highly demanded for the miniaturized bio-sensing and bio-imaging applications. Here, we propose a novel type of spatial heterodyne Fourier transform spectrometer (SHFTS) integrated with a sub-wavelength grating coupler (SWGC) for the dual-polarization bandpass sampling on the Si3N4 platform. Through tuning the coupling angles with different polarization, we experimentally demonstrated the unprecedented broadband spectrum retrieval results with the overall bandw…

High power per comb mode (>10-7 W/mode) is obtained over a broad spectral span (>700 nm). The source is used for direct absorption spectroscopy with a Michelson-based Fourier transform interferometer.

We report a newly designed mid-infrared-pump visible-probe measurement system, which can measure phase-sensitive responses to a mid-infrared pulse along the oscillating electromagnetic field. In this system, the pump light is a phase-locked mid-infrared pulse with temporal width of 100 fs, which is produced via difference frequency generation (DFG) from two idler pulses of two optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) that are excited by the same Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier. The probe pulse is a visible pulse with temporal width of 9 fs, and it is generated from a custom-built non-collinear …
Fourier transform spectroscopy based on incoherent light sources is a well-established tool in research fields from molecular spectroscopy and atmospheric monitoring to material science and biophysics. It provides broadband molecular spectra and information about the molecular structure and composition of absorptive media. However, the spectral resolution is fundamentally limited by the maximum delay range (Δ$_{max}$) of the interferometer, so acquisition of high-resolution spectra implies long measurement times and large instrument size. We overcome this limit by combining the Fourier transfo…
Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM), and its derivate, Fourier transform infrared nanospectroscopy (nano-FTIR) are emerging techniques for infrared (IR) nanoimaging and spectroscopy with applications in diverse fields ranging from nanophotonics, chemical imaging and materials science. However, spectroscopic nanoimaging is still challenged by the limited acquisition rate of current nano-FTIR technology. Here we combine s-SNOM, nano-FTIR and synthetic optical holographic (SOH) to achieve infrared spectroscopic nanoimaging at unprecedented speed (8 spectroscopically re…

Iodomethane is introduced into a 76 m long multipass absorption cell by its vapor …
We demonstrate broadband and sensitive cavity ring-down spectroscopy using a near infrared frequency comb and a time-resolved Fourier transform spectrometer. The cavity decays are measured simultaneously and spectrally sorted, leading to purely exponential decays for each spectral element. The absorption spectra of atmospheric water and carbon dioxide are retrieved and demonstrate the high frequency resolution and absorption precision of the technique. The experimental apparatus, the measurement concept and the data treatment are described. The technique benefits from the advantages of cavity …
The fast Fourier transform, FFT, is a useful and prevalent algorithm in signal processing. It characterizes the spectral components of a signal, or is used in combination with other operations to perform more complex computations such as filtering, convolution, and correlation. Digital FFTs are limited in speed by the necessity of moving charge within logic gates. An analog temporal FFT in fiber optics has been demonstrated with highest data bandwidth. However, the implementation with discrete fiber optic FFT components is bulky. Here, we present and analyze a design of an optical FFT in Silic…
Intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy (ICLAS) with an evacuated Cr2+: ZnSe laser is performed with a high-resolution time-resolved Fourier transform interferometer with a minimum detectable absorption coefficient equal to 4 10-9 cm-1 Hz-1/2 in the 2.5$μ$m region. This represents the extreme limit presently reached in the infrared by ICLAS with Doppler limited resolution. The broad gain band of the crystal allows a spectral coverage at most equal to 125 nm, wide enough to see entire vibration bands. Weak CO2 bands observed up to now only in the Venus atmosphere are recorded for the first ti…
Programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs), offering diverse signal processing functions within a single chip, are promising solutions for applications ranging from optical communications to artificial intelligence. While the scale and complexity of programmable PICs is increasing, the characterization, and thus calibration, of them becomes increasingly challenging. Here we demonstrate a phase retrieval method for programmable PICs using an on-chip fractional-delay reference path. The impulse response of the chip can be uniquely and precisely identified from only the insertion loss using…

We report the frequency stabilization of an erbium-doped fiber distributed-feedback laser using an all-fiber based Michelson interferometer of large arm imbalance. The interferometer uses a 1 km SMF-28 optical fiber spool and an acousto optic modulator allowing heterodyne detection. The frequency noise power spectral density is reduced by more than 40 dB for Fourier frequencies ranging from 1 Hz to 10 kHz, corresponding to a level well below 1 Hz^2/Hz over the whole range. It reaches 10^{-2} Hz^2/Hz at 1 kHz. Between 40 Hz and 30 kHz, the frequency noise is shown to be comparable to the one ob…
