We have investigated the vacuum maximally symmetric solutions of recently proposed density-metric unimodular gravity theory, the results are widely different from inflationary senario. The exponential dependence on time in deSitter space is substiuted by a power law. Open space-times with non-zero cosmological constant are excluded in this theory
It is shown that the one-loop effective action of unimodular gravity is the same as that of ordinary gravity, restricted to unimodular metrics. The only difference is in the treatment of the global scale degree of freedom and of the cosmological term. A constant vacuum energy does not gravitate, addressing one aspect of the cosmological constant problem.
An effective theory of gravity in the infrared is proposed, which involves the determinant of the metric relative to the determinant of a prior metric taken to be that of Minkowski spacetime. This effective theory can be interpreted as a generalization of unimodular gravity. In a cosmological context with ultrarelativistic or cold matter, the resulting field equations have only one solution, empty Minkowski spacetime (selected by the prior metric of the theory). The introduction of energy exchange between vacuum and matter gives rise to nonstatic cosmic solutions. It is found that Minkowski sp…
We combine the unimodular gravity and mimetic gravity theories into a unified theoretical framework, which is proposed to provide a suggestive proposal for a framework that may assist in the discussion and solution search of the cosmological constant problem and of the dark matter issue. After providing the formulation of the unimodular mimetic gravity and investigating all the new features that the vacuum unimodular gravity implies, by using the underlying reconstruction method, we realize some well known cosmological evolutions, with some of these being exotic for the ordinary Einstein-Hilbe…
We reconstruct the geometrical $f(T)$ actions in the framework of unimodular $f(T)$ gravity. The unimodular $f(T)$ gravity yields stunning properties related to the generalized Friedmann equations. Indeed, it has been found that depending on the form of the Friedmann equations, the Lagrange multipliers may or not depend on the time parameter $τ$. Moreover we find that the reconstruction of $f(T)$ functions can be easily performed in general, not depending on a given scale factor, or can determine a particular way, depending on a given scale factor, in the vacuum. It is noted that the reconstru…
We review selected aspects of unimodular gravity and we discuss its viability as a solution of the old cosmological constant problem. In unimodular gravity the cosmological constant is promoted to a global degree of freedom. We highlight the importance of correctly setting up its initial data in order to achieve a resolution of the cosmological constant problem on a semi-classical level. We review recent path integral analysis of quantum aspects of unimodular gravity to note that the semi-classical findings carry over to the quantum level as well. We point out that a resolution of the problem …
The maximally helicity violating (MHV) tree level scattering amplitudes involving three, four or five gravitons are worked out in Unimodular Gravity. They are found to coincide with the corresponding amplitudes in General Relativity. This a remarkable result, insofar as both the propagators and the vertices are quite different in both theories.
A central aspect of the cosmological constant problem is to understand why vacuum energy does not gravitate. In order to account for this observation, while allowing for nontrivial dynamics of the quantum vacuum, we motivate a novel background independent theory of gravity. The theory is an extension of unimodular gravity that is described in geometric terms by means of a conformal (light-cone) structure and differential forms of degree one and two. We show that the subset of the classical field equations describing the dynamics of matter degrees of freedom and the conformal structure of space…
We propose a unimodular version of the Brans-Dicke theory designed with a constrained Lagrangian formulation. The resulting field equations are traceless. The vacuum solutions in the cosmological background reproduce the corresponding solutions of the usual Brans-Dicke theory but with a cosmological constant term. A perturbative analysis of the scalar modes is performed and stable and unstable configurations appear in contrast with the Brans-Dicke case for which only stable configurations occur. On the other hand, tensorial modes in this theory remains the same as in the traditional Brans-Dick…
We investigate path integral quantization of two versions of unimodular gravity. First a fully diffeomorphism-invariant theory is analyzed, which does not include a unimodular condition on the metric, while still being equivalent to other unimodular gravity theories at the classical level. The path integral has the same form as in general relativity (GR), except that the cosmological constant is an unspecified value of a variable, and it thus is unrelated to any coupling constant. When the state of the universe is a superposition of vacuum states, the path integral is extended to include an in…

Unimodular gravity is an interesting approach to address the cosmological constant problem, since the vacuum energy density of quantum fields does not gravitate in this framework, and the cosmological constant appears as an integration constant. These features arise as a consequence of considering a constrained volume element 4-form that breaks the diffeomorphisms invariance down to volume preserving diffeomorphisms. In this work, the first-order formulation of unimodular gravity is presented by considering the spin density of matter fields as a source of spacetime torsion. Even though the mos…

We suggest a Lorentz non-invariant generalization of the unimodular gravity theory, which is classically equivalent to general relativity with a locally inert (devoid of local degrees of freedom) perfect fluid having an equation of state with a constant parameter $w$. For the range of $w$ near $-1$ this dark fluid can play the role of dark energy, while for $w=0$ this dark dust admits spatial inhomogeneities and can be interpreted as dark matter. We discuss possible implications of this model in the cosmological initial conditions problem. In particular, this is the extension of known microcan…
A new spherically-symmetric solution for a gravitational field is found in the conformally-unimodular metric. It is shown, that the surface of the black hole horizon in the standard Schwarzschild metric can be squeezed to a point by converting coordinates to the conformally-unimodular metric. In this new metric, there is no black hole horizon, while the naked singularity corresponds to a point massive particle. The reason for the study of this particular gauge (i.e., conformally-unimodular metric) is its relation to the vacuum energy problem. That aims to relate it to other physical phenomena …
The main goal of this work consists in showing that the analytic solutions for a class of characteristic problems for the Einstein vacuum equations have an existence region larger than the one provided by the Cauchy-Kowalevski theorem, due to the intrinsic hyperbolicity of the Einstein equations. The magnitude of this region depends only on suitable $H_s$ Sobolev norms of the initial data for a fixed $s\leq 7$ and if the initial data are sufficiently small the analytic solution is global. In a previous paper, hereafter "I", we have described a geometric way of writing the vacuum Einstein equat…
The renormalization group flow of unimodular quantum gravity is investigated within two different classes of truncations of the flowing effective action. In particular, we search for non-trivial fixed-point solutions for polynomial expansions of the $f(R)$-type as well as of the $F(R_{μν}R^{μν})+R\,Z(R_{μν}R^{μν})$ family on a maximally symmetric background. We close the system of beta functions of the gravitational couplings with anomalous dimensions of the graviton and Faddeev-Popov ghosts treated according to two independent prescriptions: one based on the so-called background approximation…
We study the finite time singularity correspondence between the Jordan and Einstein frames for various $F(R)$ gravity theories. Particularly we investigate the ordinary pure $F(R)$ gravity case and the unimodular $F(R)$ gravity cases, in the absence of any matter fluids. In the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity cases, by using specific illustrative examples, we show that it is possible to have various correspondences of finite time singularities, and in some cases it is possible a singular cosmology in one frame might be non-singular in the other frame. In the unimodular $F(R)$ gravity case, the unimodu…
We discuss the weight of vacuum energy in various contexts. First, we compute the vacuum energy for flat spacetimes of the form $\mathbb{T}^3 \times \mathbb{R}$, where $\mathbb{T}^3$ stands for a general 3-torus. We discover a quite simple relationship between energy at radius $R$ and energy at radius $\frac{l_s^2}{ R}$. Then we consider quantum gravity effects in the vacuum energy of a scalar field in $\mathbb{M}_3 \times S^1$ where $\mathbb{M}_3$ is a general curved spacetime, and the circle $S^1$ refers to a spacelike coordinate. We compute it for General Relativity and generic transverse {…
The standard method of proving analyticity of stationary vacuum metrics invokes the quotient-space version of Einstein equations. We verify that the same conclusion can be obtained using the KID equations on maximal surfaces.
We study the effects of acceleration on fermionic Gaussian states of localized modes of a Dirac field. We consider two wave-packets in a Gaussian state and transform these to an accelerated frame of reference. In particular, we formulate the action of this transformation as a fermionic quantum channel. Having developed the general framework for fermions, we then investigate the entanglement of the vacuum, as well as the entanglement in Bell states. We find that with increasing acceleration vacuum entanglement increases, while the entanglement of Bell states decreases. Notably, our results have…
Unimodular gravity is an appealing approach to address the cosmological constant problem. In this scenario, the vacuum energy density of quantum fields does not gravitate and the cosmological constant appears merely as an integration constant. Recently, it has been shown that energy diffusion that may arise in quantum gravity and in theories with spontaneous collapse is compatible with this framework by virtue of its restricted diffeomorphism invariance. New studies suggest that this phenomenon could lead to higher-order equations in the context of homogeneous and isotropic Universe, affecting…
A thermo field dynamics approach for calculating the entropy of a spacetime is suggested. It is exemplified through the Rindler spacetime, the Milne spacetime, the Boulware spacetime, and the Minkowski spacetime with a moving mirror that the entropy of a spacetime is equal to the entropy of a thermo quantum field with the same temperature of the spacetime we study. This in fact suggests an thermo field dynamics approach of calculating the entropy of a spacetime. In this approach, the entropy of a spacetime is an expectation value of the entropy operator on a thermo vacuum state. The thermo vac…
We consider the initial boundary value problem for the Einstein vacuum equations in the maximal gauge, or more generally, in a gauge where the mean curvature of a timelike foliation is fixed near the boundary. We prove the existence of solutions such that the normal to the boundary is tangent to the time slices, the lapse of the induced time coordinate on the boundary is fixed and the main geometric boundary conditions are given by the 1-parameter family of Riemannian conformal metrics on each two-dimensional section. As in the local existence theory of Christodoulou-Klainerman for the Einstei…
We recall some well and some less known results about the Kodama state and the related $θ$ ambiguity in defining canonical variables. Based on them, we make some comments highlighting that the Kodama state for real connection variables can be given a precise meaning and that it implements a vacuum peaked on a (in a suitable sense) maximally symmetric geometry. We also highlight the similarity of this construction with the isolated horizon boundary condition $F \propto Σ$ and stress that it is, in agreement with earlier work, inadequate to define the notion of a quantum horizon.
In this work we prove that the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions of General Relativity emerge from the geometric structure of statistical mechanics and thermodynamic fluctuation theory. To present our argument, we begin by showing that the pseudo-Riemannian structure of the Thermodynamic Phase Space is a solution to the vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity with a cosmological constant. Then, we use the geometry of equilibrium thermodynamics to demonstrate that the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions of Einstein's Field Equations -- Minkowski, de-Sitter and Anti-de-Sitter spacetim…
We apply the DDC formalism [proposed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji] to study the average rate of change of energy of two identical two-level atoms interacting with the vacuum massless scalar field in synchronized motion along stationary trajectories. By separating the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and atomic radiation reaction, we first show that for the two-atom system initially prepared in the factorizable eigenstates $|g_Ag_B\rangle$ and $|e_Ae_B\rangle$, where $g$ and $e$ represent the ground state and the excited state of a single atom respectively, both vacuum fluctu…
