We give a simple construction of Gromov hyperbolic Coxeter groups of arbitrarily large virtual cohomological dimension. Our construction provides new examples of such groups. Using this one can construct e.g. new groups having some interesting asphericity properties.
In this article, we study the manifold structure and the relatively hyperbolic structure of right-angled Coxeter groups with planar nerves. We then apply our results to the quasi-isometry problem for this class of right-angled Coxeter groups.
Beside simplices, $n$-cubes form an important class of simple polyhedra. Unlike hyperbolic Coxeter simplices, hyperbolic Coxeter $n$-cubes are not classified. We show that there is no hyperbolic Coxeter $n$-cube for $n\geq~6$, and provide a full classification for $n\leq 5$. Our methods, which are essentially of combinatorial and algebraic nature, can be (and have been successfully) implemented in a symbolic computation software such as Mathematica$^\circledR$.
Floyd showed that if a sequence of compact hyperbolic Coxeter polygons converges, then so does the sequence of the growth rates of the Coxeter groups associated with the polygons. For the case of the hyperbolic 3-space, Kolpakov discovered the same phenomena for specific convergent sequences of hyperbolic Coxeter polyhedra. In this paper, we show that the growth rate is a continuous function on the space of Coxeter systems. This is an extension of the results due to Floyd and Kolpakov since the convergent sequences of Coxeter polyhedra give rise to that of Coxeter systems in the space of marke…
We establish some geometric constraints on compact Coxeter polytopes in hyperbolic spaces and show that these constraints can be a very useful tool for the classification problem of reflective anisotropic Lorentzian lattices and cocompact arithmetic hyperbolic reflection groups.
We prove that the hitting measure is not equivalent to the Lebesgue measure for a large class of nearest-neighbour random walks on hyperbolic reflection groups and Fuchsian groups.
We consider compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytopes whose Coxeter diagram contains a unique dotted edge. We prove that such a polytope in d-dimensional hyperbolic space has at most d+3 facets. In view of results of Lannér, Kaplinskaja, Esselmann, and the second author, this implies that compact hyperbolic Coxeter polytopes with a unique pair of non-intersecting facets are completely classified. They do exist only up to dimension 6 and in dimension 8.
Given any irreducible Coxeter group $C$ of hyperbolic type with non-linear diagram and rank at least $4$, whose maximal parabolic subgroups are finite, we construct an infinite family of locally spherical regular hypertopes of hyperbolic type whose Coxeter diagram is the same as that of $C$.
In the spirit of peripheral subgroups in relatively hyperbolic groups, we exhibit a simple class of quasi-isometrically rigid subgroups in graph products of finite groups, which we call eccentric subgroups. As an application, we prove that, if two right-angled Coxeter groups $C(Γ_1)$ and $C(Γ_2)$ are quasi-isometric, then for any minsquare subgraph $Λ_1 \leq Γ_1$ there exists a minsquare subgraph $Λ_2 \leq Γ_2$ such that the right-angled Coxeter groups $C(Λ_1)$ and $C(Λ_2)$ are quasi-isometric as well. Various examples of non-quasi-isometric groups are deduced. Our arguments are based on a stu…
We study Morse subgroups and Morse boundaries of random right-angled Coxeter groups in the Erdős--Rényi model. We show that at densities below $\left(\sqrt{\frac{1}{2}}-ε\right)\sqrt{\frac{\log{n}}{n}}$ random right-angled Coxeter groups almost surely have Morse hyperbolic surface subgroups. This implies their Morse boundaries contain embedded circles and they cannot be quasi-isometric to a right-angled Artin group. Further, at densities above $\left(\sqrt{\frac{1}{2}}+ε\right)\sqrt{\frac{\log{n}}{n}}$ we show that, almost surely, the hyperbolic Morse special subgroups of a random right-angled…
In this paper, we prove that all finitely generated malnormal subgroups of one-ended right-angled Coxeter groups are strongly quasiconvex and they are in particular quasiconvex when the ambient groups are hyperbolic. The key idea is to prove all infinite proper malnormal subgroups of one-ended right-angled Coxeter groups are join-free and then prove the strong quasiconvexity and the virtual freeness of these subgroups. We also study the subgroup divergence of join-free subgroups in right-angled Coxeter groups and compare them with the analogous subgroups in right-angled Artin groups. We charac…
A generic finite presentation defines a word hyperbolic group whose boundary is homeomorphic to the Menger curve. In this article, we produce the first known examples of non-hyperbolic $CAT(0)$ groups whose visual boundary is homeomorphic to the Menger curve. The examples in question are the Coxeter groups whose nerve is a complete graph on $n$ vertices for $n\geq 5$. The construction depends on a slight extension of Sierpiński's theorem on embedding $1$--dimensional planar compacta into the Sierpiński carpet. See the appendix for a brief erratum.
We show that for a large class $\mathcal{W}$ of Coxeter groups the following holds: Given a group $W_Γ$ in $\mathcal{W}$, the automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(W_Γ)$ virtually surjects onto some infinite Coxeter group. In particular, the group ${\rm Aut}(W_Γ)$ is virtually indicable and therefore does not have Kazhdan's property (T).
A graph $X$ is defined inductively to be $(a_0,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular if $X$ is $a_0$-regular and for every vertex $v$ of $X$, the sphere of radius $1$ around $v$ is an $(a_1,\dots,a_{n-1})$-regular graph. Such a graph $X$ is said to be highly regular (HR) of level $n$ if $a_{n-1}\neq 0$. Chapman, Linial and Peled studied HR-graphs of level 2 and provided several methods to construct families of graphs which are expanders "globally and locally". They ask whether such HR-graphs of level 3 exist. In this paper we show how the theory of Coxeter groups, and abstract regular polytopes and their ge…
For any right-angled Coxeter group $Γ$ on $k$ generators, we construct proper actions of $Γ$ on $\mathrm{O}(p,q+1)$ by right and left multiplication, and on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}(p,q+1)$ by affine transformations, for some $p,q\in\mathbb N$ with $p+q+1=k$. As a consequence, any virtually special group admits proper affine actions on some $\mathbb R^n$: this includes e.g. surface groups, hyperbolic 3-manifold groups, examples of word hyperbolic groups of arbitrarily large virtual cohomological dimension, etc. We also study some examples in cohomological dimension two and four, for which…
