The quark propagator is calculated in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in a self-consistent 1/Nc-expansion at next-to-leading order. The calculations are carried out iteratively in Euclidean space. The chiral quark condensate and its dependence on temperature and chemical potential is calculated directly and compared with the mean-field results. In the chiral limit, we find a second-order phase transition at finite temperature and zero chemical potential, in agreement with universality arguments. At zero temperature and finite chemical potential, the phase transition is first order. In comparison with the mean-field results, the critical temperature and chemical potential are slightly reduced. We determine spectral functions from the Euclidean propagators by employing the Maximum-Entropy-Method (MEM). Thereby quark and meson masses are estimated and decay channels identified. For testing this method, we also apply it to evaluate perturbative spectral functions, which can be calculated directly in Minkowski space. In most cases we find that MEM is able to reproduce the rough features of the spectral functions, but not the details.
Based on the self-consistent scheme beyond mean-field approximation in the large $N_c$ expansion, including current quark mass explicitly, a general scheme of SU(2) NJL model is developed. To ensure the quark self-energy expanded in the proper order of $N_c$, an approximate internal meson propagator is deduced, which is in order of $O(1/N_c)$. In our scheme, adopting the method of external momentum expansion, all the Feynman diagrams are calculated in a unified way by only expanding the quark propagator. Our numerical results show, that different from the mean field approximation in which the …
It has been recently pointed out, that nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio models, may present unphysical thermodynamical behavior like negative pressure and oscillating entropy. Here we show how these thermodynamic instabilities can be related to the analytical structure of the poles of the quark propagator in the model. The analysis is carried out for two different regulators and we show, in each case, how the instabilities are related to the pressence of highly unstable poles. We also argue that the softening of these instabilities by the inclusion of the Polyakov loop is related to the effect the…
We study the conditions for the existence of stable quark matter in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio mean field at zero temperature and discuss its interpretation.
The quark-hadron phase transition at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential is investigated in an extended NJL model with scalar-vector eight-point interaction by comparing the pressure of symmetric nuclear matter with that of the quark matter. As a result, the extended NJL phase diagram is obtained in the temperature-baryon chemical potential plane and the effects of the scalar-vector coupling constant G_{sv}^q on the chiral phase transition are summarized. It is shown that a quarkyonic-like phase in which the chiral symmetry is restored but the elementary excitation modes are nucle…
The chiral phase transition and color superconductivity in an extended NJL model with eight-quark interactions are studied. The scalar-type nonlinear term hastens the chiral phase transition, the scalar-vector mixing term suppresses effects of the vector-type linear term and the scalar-diquark mixing term makes the coexisting phase wider.
The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model provides a sound framework for calculating the fragmentation functions in an effective chiral quark theory, where the momentum and isospin sum rules are satisfied without the introduction of ad hoc parameters. Earlier studies of the pion fragmentation functions using the NJL model within this framework showed qualitative agreement with the empirical parameterizations. Here we extend the NJL-Jet model by including the strange quark. The corrections to the pion fragmentation functions and corresponding kaon fragmentation functions are calculated using th…
The Global Colour Model (GCM) of QCD is a very successful model. Not only is it formally derivable from QCD but under various conditions it reduces to the NJL model and also to Chiral Perturbation Theory, and to other models. Results presented include the effective gluon propagator, the difference between constituent and exact quark propagators, various meson and nucleon observables, a new mass formula for the Nambu-Goldstone mesons of QCD, and the change in the MIT bag constant in nuclei.
We investigate the effect of mesonic fluctuations on the pion propagator in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model by explicitly taking into account 1/N_c corrections. Because of the non-renormalizability of the model we have to regularize the meson loops with an independent cutoff parameter Lambda_M. Whereas for moderate values of Lambda_M the pion properties change only quantitatively we encounter strong instabilities for larger values of Lambda_M.
The existence and the properties of self-bound quark matter in the NJL model at zero temperature are investigated in mean-field approximation, focusing on inhomogeneous structures with one-dimensional spatial modulations. It is found that the most stable homogeneous solutions which have previously been interpreted as schematic quark droplets are unstable against formation of a one-dimensional soliton-antisoliton lattice. The solitons repel each other, so that the minimal energy per quark is realized in the single-soliton limit. The properties of the solitons and their interactions are discusse…
In this paper, the NJL-type model is used to investigate the color superconductivity. The four-fermion interactions of the NJL-type model are Fierz-transformed into two different classes, i.e., the quark-antiquark and the quark-quark interaction channels, associated with the chiral symmetry breaking and color superconductivity respectively. We conclude that the weighting factor between quark-antiquark and quark-quark interaction channels has significance on the phase structure when the mean-field approximation is employed, and the baryon number density gives a tight constraint on the weighting…
The NJL-jet model provides a sound framework for calculating the fragmentation func- tions in an effective chiral quark theory, where the momentum and isospin sum rules are satisfied without the introduction of ad hoc parameters [1]. Earlier studies of the pion fragmentation func- tions using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model within this framework showed good qualitative agreement with the empirical parameterizations. Here we extend the NJL-jet model by including the strange quark. The corrections to the pion fragmentation function and corresponding kaon fragmen- tation functions are calculat…
The general quasiparticle propagator in dense quark matter is derived for equal mass quarks. Specialized to an NJL model, this propagator includes one new condensate, $Δ_3$, in addition to the usual CFL condensate, $Δ_1$. The gap equation is solved in two NJL models and the dependence on the quark mass of the condensates and the gap is presented. Analytic approximations for the condensates are obtained and compared to exact numerical solutions. The results are shown to differ from those obtained by neglecting $Δ_3$, especially for smaller values of $Δ_1$. The two different NJL models presented…
We present a path-integral hadronization for doubly heavy baryons. The two heavy quarks in the baryon are approximated as a scalar or axial-vector diquark described by a heavy diquark effective theory. The gluon dynamics are represented by a NJL-Model interaction for the heavy diquarks and light quarks, which leads to an effective action of the baryon fields after the quark and diquark fields are integrated out. This effective action for doubly heavy baryon includes the electromagnetic and electroweak interactions, as well as the interaction with light mesons. We also verify the Ward-Takahashi…
The transport equation of the spinning quarks, moving in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type mean field, is derived by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equations, up to the order of $\hbar$, under the mean field approximation. It shows that the scalar and the vector mean field potentials have different impacts on the quantum correction to the transport equation. Both the forces give rise to an anomalous velocity and an anomalous force where the latter would vanish if the vector force is turned off. The particle dispersion relation is modified by the vector force as well. Besides, the spin precession …
The chiral phase transition is studied in an extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with eight-quark interactions. Equations for scalar and vector quark densities, derived in the mean field approximation, are nonlinear and mutually coupled. The scalar-type nonlinear term hastens the restoration of chiral symmetry, while the scalar-vector mixing term makes the transition sharper. The scalar-type nonlinear term shifts the critical endpoint toward the values predicted by lattice QCD simulations and the QCD-like theory.
In this work we use the equation of state (EOS) of (2+1)-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model to study the structure of the strange quark star. With a new free parameter $α$, the Lagrangian is constructed by two parts, the original NJL Lagrangian and the Fierz transformation of it, as $\mathcal{L}=(1-α)\mathcal{L}_{NJL}+α\mathcal{L}_{Fierz}$. To determine the range of $α$, we compare the binding energies in the 2-flavor and (2+1)-flavor cases. We also consider the constraints of chemical equilibrium and electric charge neutrality in the strange quark star and choose six representative EOSs wi…
The problem of the $ρ$ meson resonance solution in the extended NJL model is studied. It has been shown previously that the solution for the $ρ$ meson changes smoothly from a bound state to a "virtual state" when the vector channel attraction becomes too weak to support bound state solutions. We have found that together with these solutions a separate resonance branch appears which is not connected smoothly with the bound state solutions. At small values of constituent quark mass, $m\sim 200$ MeV, it corresponds to the physical vector meson resonance solution in the quark-continuum region. The…
We have studied the properties of hot and dense quark matter based on the 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model as well as its Polyakov-loop extension (pNJL) with scalar-isovector and vector-isovector couplings. Provided a considerable large isospin asymmetry or isospin chemical potential, isospin splittings of constituent mass, chiral phase transition boundary, and critical point for $u$ and $d$ quarks can be observed for positive isovector coupling constants but are suppressed for negative ones. The quark matter symmetry energy decreases with the increasing isovector coupling constant, and…
The recently developed Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model is used as an effective chiral quark theory to calculate the quark fragmentation functions to pions, kaons, nucleons, and antinucleons. The effects of the vector mesons rho, K* and phi on the production of secondary pions and kaons are included. The fragmentation processes to nucleons and antinucleons are described by using the quark-diquark picture, which has been shown to give a reasonable description of quark distribution functions. We incorporate effects of next-to-leading order (NLO) in the Q^2 evolution, and compare our results …
The chiral phase transition of a hot and dense system of quarks is studied within a modified SU(3) NJL lagrangian that implements the QCD scale anomaly. The u- and s-quark condensates can feel or not the same chiral restoration depending on the considered region of the 3-dimension space T_c(μ_uc,μ_sc). The temperature behaviour of the pressure and of the energy and entropy densities of the u- and s-quark system is investigated. At high temperature, the non-vanishing bare s-quark mass only modifies slightly the usual behaviour associated with an ideal quark gas.
We study the possible existence of deconfined quark matter in the interior of neutron stars using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to describe the quark phase. We find that typical neutron stars with masses around 1.4 solar masses do not possess any deconfined quark matter in their center. This can be traced back to the property of the NJL model which suggests a large constituent strange quark mass over a wide range of densities.
We study the interplay of the chiral and the color superconducting phase transitions in an extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a multi-quark interaction that produces the nonlinear chiral-diquark coupling. We observe that this nonlinear coupling adds up coherently with the ω^2 interaction to produce the chiral-color superconductivity coexistence phase or cancel each other depending on its sign. We discuss that large coexistence region in the phase diagram is consistent with the quark-diquark picture for the nucleon whereas its smallness is the prerequisite for the applicability of the Ginz…
The Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is supplemented by the quark interaction generated by the one-gluon exchange. The employed gluon propagator exhibits the correct large momentum behavior of QCD, whereas the Landau-pole at low energies is screened. The emerging constituent quark model is one-loop renormalizable and interpolates between the phenomenologically successful Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at low energies and perturbative QCD at high momenta. Consequently, the momentum dependence of the quark self-energy at high energy coincides with the prediction from perturbative QCD. The chiral phase transit…
We describe baryons as quark-diquark bound states at finite temperature and density within the NJL model for chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in quark matter. Based on a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach to mesons and diquarks we present in a first step the thermodynamics of quark-diquark matter which includes the Mott dissociation of diquarks at finite temperature. In a second step we solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the baryon as a quark-diquark bound state in quark-diquark matter. We obtain a stable, bound baryon even beyond the Mott temperature for diquark dissociation since…
We study the beahviour of the dual quark condensate $Σ_1$ in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model and its nonlocal variant. In quantum chromodynamics $Σ_1$ can be realted to the breaking of the center symmetry and is therefore an (approximate) order parameter of confinement. The deconfinement transition is then signaled by a strong rise of $Σ_1$ as a function of temperature. However, a similar behaviour is also seen in the NJL model, which is known to have no confinement. Indeed, it was shown that in this model the rise of $Σ_1$ is triggered by the chiral phase transition. In order to shed more …
The phase diagram at finite temperature and chemical potential for the Polyakov-NJL model with eight quark interactions is reviewed for the SU(3) flavor case.
Dilepton production rate (DPR) from hot and dense quark matter is studied in the presence of an arbitrary external magnetic field using the 2-flavour Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks is taken into consideration while calculating the constituent quark mass as well as the DPR from the thermo-magnetic medium. An infinite number of quark Landau levels is incorporated so that no approximations are made on the strength of the background magnetic field. The analytic structure of the two point vector current correlation function in the complex energy p…
Investigations of deconfined quark matter within NJL-type models are reviewed, focusing on the regime of low temperatures and ``moderate'' densities, which is not accessible by perturbative QCD. Central issue is the interplay between chiral symmetry restoration and the formation of color superconducting phases. In order to lay a solid ground for this analysis, we begin with a rather detailed discussion of two and three-flavor NJL models and their phase structure, neglecting the possibility of diquark pairing in a first step. An important aspect of this part is a comparison with the MIT bag mod…
Temperature dependence of the quark condensate is studied in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with meson loops. Substantial differences are found compared to the results with quark loops only.
Anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks in presence of an external magnetic field has been explored using a nonlocal Nambu\textemdash Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Various strengths of AMM differing in orders of magnitude are used in the literature. We explore them in our nonlocal framework to decide on their strength. We checked the validity of using constant AMM of quarks and investigate two different temperature and magnetic field dependent forms. The forms are taken as the AMM being proportional to the i) meanfield and the ii) square of the meanfield. On comparison with the lattice data for …
We discuss the net quark and isovector fluctuations as well as off-diagonal quark flavor susceptibilities along the chiral phase transition line in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The model is formulated at non-zero quark and isospin chemical potentials with non-vanishing vector couplings in the iso-scalar and iso-vector channels. We study the influence of the quark chemical potential on the quark flavour susceptibilities in detail and the dependence of the results on model parameters as well as on the quark mass. The NJL model findings are compared with recent lattice results obtained in…
Recent studies of the fragmentation functions using the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model have been successful in describing the quark fragmentation functions to pions and kaons. The NJL-Jet model employs the integral equation approach to solve for the fragmentation functions in quark-cascade description of the hadron emission process, where one assumes that the initial quark has infinite momentum and emits an infinite number of hadrons. Here we introduce a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method to solve for the fragmentation functions,, that allows us to relax the above mentioned approximatio…
The compressibility of magnetized quark matter is investigated in the SU(2) NJL model. The increases of the chemical potential and the temperature can reduce the compressibility, and lead to the much stiffer equation of state. The variation of the compressibility with the magnetic field will depend on the phase region. Due to the anisotropic structure, the compressibility is different in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the field. The discontinuity of longitudinal compressibility with the chemical potential and the temperature captures the signature of a first-order chiral phase tr…
In this work, a modified Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with proper-time regularization is employed to study the structure of nonstrange quark stars. The coupling constant of four-fermion interaction in the conventional NJL model is modified as $G=G_1+G_2\langle\barψψ\rangle$ to highlight the feedback of quark propagator to gluon propagator. To study the dependence of the equation of state (EOS) on this modification as well as the vacuum pressure, we choose nine representative EOSs for comparison. It is found that a smaller $G_1$ leads to a stiffer EOS, and a higher vacuum pressure (i.e., a sm…
We explore the effect of including quantum fluctuations in the two flavor Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature. This is accomplished, in a symmetry preserving way, by including collective and noncollective modes in the one-meson-loop gap equation which originate from poles and branch cuts in the complex plane, respectively. The inclusion of a boson cutoff, $Λ_b$, is necessary to regularize the meson-loop momenta. This new parameter is used to study the influence of going beyond the usual mean field approximation in the quark condensate. As the temperature increases, chiral symmetry…
We study the nucleon and diquarks in a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. For certain parameters the model exhibits quark confinement, in the form of a propagator without real poles. After truncation of the two-body channels to the scalar and axial-vector diquarks, a relativistic Faddeev equation for nucleon bound states is solved in the covariant diquark-quark picture. The dependence of the nucleon mass on diquark masses is studied in detail. We find parameters that lead to a simultaneous reasonable description of pions and nucleons. Both the diquarks contribute attractively to the nucleon m…
We explore the inhomogeneous QCD phases at finite density and temperature using a (3+1)-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in the large Nc limit with an additional attractive tensor-tensor interaction channel. For single modulated solutions, the problem reduces to solving the gap equation of a Chiral Gross-Neveu (NJL2) theory, whose minimum solution is a periodic array of chirally twisted kinks. At zero temperature, the minimum solution reduces to the quarkyonic chiral spiral found in quarkyonic matter. The connection between the quarkyonic matter and our (3+1)-dimensional NJL model is…
We analyze the color-flavor-locked phase of strange quark matter modelled by the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) framework with and without magnetic field and discuss some additional constraints on the stability scenario when a high magnetic field is applied. We compare the results obtained by employing the MIT Bag Model and discuss the pairing gap behavior and its influence on the equation of state.
A schematic NJL-type model is employed to investigate kaon and pion condensation in deconfined quark matter in the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase, explicitly referring to quark degrees of freedom. To that end we allow for non-vanishing pseudoscalar diquark condensates in addition to the scalar ones which constitute the CFL phase. Color neutrality is ensured by the appropriate choice of color chemical potentials. The dependence of the free energy in the Goldstone condensed phases on quark masses and charge chemical potentials is found to be in good qualitative -- in most cases also quantitativ…
We investigate the interplay of chiral and heavy quark symmetries by using the NJL quark model. Heavy quarks with finite masses m(Q) as well as the limit m(Q) to infinity are studied. We found large corrections to the heavy mass scaling law for the pseudoscalar decay constant. The influence of external momenta on the shape parameters of the Isgur-Wise form factor is discussed.
We use a Nambu-Jona Lasinio type model to investigate the phase diagram of dense quark matter under neutron star conditions in mean field approximation. The model contains selfconsistently determined quark masses and allows for diquark condensation in the scalar as well as in the pseudoscalar channel. The latter gives rise to the possibility of K^0 condensation in the CFL phase. In agreement with earlier studies we find that this CFLK^0 phase covers large regions of the phase diagram and that the predominant part of this phase is fully gapped. We show, however, that there exists a region at ve…
We present the results obtained in the three-flavour ($N_f=3$) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which is extended by the $U(1)_A$ breaking six-quark 't Hooft interaction and eight-quark interactions. We address the problem of stability, and some phenomenological consequences of the models with multi-quark interactions.
We discuss the quark condensate of the vacuum inside the baryon. We analyze the 1+1 dimensional chiral bag in analogy with the realistic 3+1 dimensional one. The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type interaction is used to investigate the quark condensate in the chiral bag. Considering the strong meson-quark coupling, we solve the mean field solution to the scalar and pseudoscalar channels by including the chiral Casimir effects. The self-consistent equation allows a finite value of the quark condensate and hence a finite dynamical quark mass inside the bag. It is shown that an approximate Cheshire C…
The possible different phases of cold quark matter in the presence of a finite magnetic field and chemical potential are obtained within the SU(3) NJL model for two parameter sets often used in the literature. Although the general pattern is the same in both cases, the number of intermediate phases is parameter dependent. The chiral susceptibilities, as usually defined, are different not only for the s-quark as compared with the two light quarks, but also for the u and d-quarks, yielding non identical crossover lines for the light quark sector.
Apart from Magnetic Catalysis at low temperatures, recent LQCD studies have shown the opposite effect at temperatures near the transition region: instead of enhancing, the magnetic field suppresses the quark condensates (Inverse Magnetic Catalysis). In this paper, two approaches are discussed within NJL-type models with Polyakov Loop that reproduce both effects.
We consider an extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model for the light meson sector of QCD where unphysical quark production thresholds are excluded by an infrared cut-off on the momentum integration within quark loop diagrams. This chiral quark model conserves the low energy theorems. The infrared cut-off is fixed selfconsistently by the dynamically generated quark mass (quark condensate). The masses and decay widths of the σ- and ρ-mesons are described in the model.
The effective photon-quark-antiquark ($γq \overline{q}$) vertex function is evaluated at finite temperature in the presence of an arbitrary external magnetic field using the two-flavor gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in the mean field approximation. The lowest order diagram contributing to the magnetic form factor and the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks is calculated at finite temperature and external magnetic field using the imaginary time formalism of finite temperature field theory and the Schwinger proper time formalism. The Schwinger propagator including all the Landa…
We study the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with light and heavy quarks in a relativistic approach. We emphasize relevant regularization issues as well as the transition from light to heavy quarks. The approach of the electromagnetic meson form factor to the Isgur-Wise function in the heavy quark limit is also discussed.
We present an exact condition for the existence of gapless quasiparticle excitations in NJL models of color superconducting quark matter with a quark-quark interaction in the scalar color-antitriplet channel. The condition can be represented by a rotated ellipse in the plane of mass and chemical potential differences for the paired quark fields.
Baryon number fluctuations are believed to be good signatures of the QCD phase transition and its CP. Since the fluctuations are proportional to the various order baryon-number susceptibilities and the quark-number density is related to the dressed quark propagator, then by the two flavor NJL model we can calculate the moments of the up and down quarks. By comparing the two flavor NJL model results with the experimental data of $Sσ$ and $κσ^2$ for the net-proton distributions of Au+Au collisions by STAR, we found that the NJL results fit the experiments better at large collision energies and s…
The quark-hadron phase transition at finite baryon chemical potential is investigated in the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in which the scalar-vector eight-point interaction is included holding the chiral symmetry. By comparing a pressure of the symmetric nuclear matter with that of the quark matter, the realized phase at given baryon density is determined. As a result, the first order quark-hadron phase transition is derived where the deconfinement transition occurs after the chiral symmetry restoration in this model.
Two photon decays of scalar mesons f_0(980), a_0(980), σ(600) in the quark Nambu - Jona - Lasinio (NJL) model are calculated. The contributions of the meson loops are taken into account along with the quark loops (Hartree - Fock approximation). This corresponds to the next order of the 1/N_c expansion, where N_c=3 is the number of quark colors. It is shown that the meson and quark loops give comparable contributions to the amplitude. Moreover, in the process f_0(980)-> γγthe kaon loop plays the dominant role. A similar situation takes place in the decay ϕ-> f_0(980) γ\cite{physrev}. Our result…
The precise measurement of the high masses of the pulsars PSR J1614-2230 (M_{1614}=1.97 +- 0.04 solar masses) and PSR J0348-0432 (M_{0348}=2.01 +- 0.04 solar masses) provides an important constraint for the equation of state of cold, dense matter and is suited to give interesting insights regarding the nature and existence of the possible phase transition to deconfined quark matter in the cores of neutron stars. We analyze the stability and composition of compact star sequences for a class of hybrid nuclear - quark-matter equations of state. The quark matter phase is described in the framework…
We study the chiral phase transition of quark matter under rotation in two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. It is found that, in the rotating frame, the angular velocity plays the similar role as the baryon chemical potential and suppresses the chiral condensate, thus the chiral phase transition shows a critical end point not only in the temperature-chemical potential $T-μ$ plane, but also in the temperature-angular momentum $T-ω$ plane. One interesting observation is that in the $T-μ$ plane, the presence of the angular momentum only shifts down the critical temperature $T^E$ of the CEP…
In this paper we investigate the phase structure of a (1+1) and (3+1)-dimensional quark model with four-quark interaction and in the presence of baryon ($μ_B$), isospin ($μ_I$) and chiral isospin ($μ_{I5}$) chemical potentials. It is shown that the chemical potential $μ_{I5}$ promotes the appearance of the charged PC phase with nonzero baryon density. Results of both models are qualitatively the same, this fact enhances one's confidence in %the faith in the obtained predictions. It is established that in the large-$N_c$ limit ($N_c$ is the number of colored quarks) there exists a duality corre…
