We describe baryons as quark-diquark bound states at finite temperature and density within the NJL model for chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in quark matter. Based on a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach to mesons and diquarks we present in a first step the thermodynamics of quark-diquark matter which includes the Mott dissociation of diquarks at finite temperature. In a second step we solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the baryon as a quark-diquark bound state in quark-diquark matter. We obtain a stable, bound baryon even beyond the Mott temperature for diquark dissociation since the phase space occupation effect (Pauli blocking for quarks and Bose enhancement for diquarks) in the Bethe-Salpeter kernel for the nucleon approximately cancel so that the nucleon mass follows the in-medium behaviour of the quark and diquark masses towards chiral restoration. In this situation the baryon is obtained as a "borromean" three-quark state in medium because the two-particle state (diquark) is unbound while the three-particle state (baryon) is bound.
We present a path-integral hadronization for doubly heavy baryons. The two heavy quarks in the baryon are approximated as a scalar or axial-vector diquark described by a heavy diquark effective theory. The gluon dynamics are represented by a NJL-Model interaction for the heavy diquarks and light quarks, which leads to an effective action of the baryon fields after the quark and diquark fields are integrated out. This effective action for doubly heavy baryon includes the electromagnetic and electroweak interactions, as well as the interaction with light mesons. We also verify the Ward-Takahashi…
In a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model supplemented with an infrared cutoff in addition to the ultraviolet cutoff we study the issue whether diquarks are confined when the model is extended beyond the rainbow-ladder approximation. The gap equation, obtained in a truncation scheme motivated via a nontrivial quark-gluon vertex function, is solved to determine the constituent quark mass if chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken. In a second step, the Bethe-Salpeter equations for mesons and diquarks beyond ladder approximation are derived, taking care to preserve Goldstone's theorem in the pion channel. W…
We study the QCD phase structure in the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, incorporating the interplay between the chiral and diquark condensates induced by the axial anomaly. We demonstrate that for an appropriate range of parameters of the model, the interplay leads to the low temperature critical point in the phase structure predicted by a previous Ginzburg-Landau analysis. We also show that a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of diquark molecules emerges in the intermediate density region, and as a result, a BEC-BCS crossover is realized with increasing quark chemical potential.
We study the nucleon and diquarks in a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. For certain parameters the model exhibits quark confinement, in the form of a propagator without real poles. After truncation of the two-body channels to the scalar and axial-vector diquarks, a relativistic Faddeev equation for nucleon bound states is solved in the covariant diquark-quark picture. The dependence of the nucleon mass on diquark masses is studied in detail. We find parameters that lead to a simultaneous reasonable description of pions and nucleons. Both the diquarks contribute attractively to the nucleon m…
We present results of numerical simulations of the 3+1d Nambu - Jona-Lasinio model with a non-zero baryon chemical potential mu, with particular emphasis on the superfluid diquark condensate and associated susceptibilities. The results, when extrapolated to the zero diquark source limit, are consistent with the existence of a non-zero BCS condensate at high baryon density. The nature of the infinite volume and zero temperature limits are discussed.
The diquark and nucleon are studied in a non-local NJL model. We solve the relativistic Faddeev equation and compare the results with the ordinary NJL model. Although the model is quark confining, it is not diquark confining in the rainbow-ladder approximation. We show that the off-shell contribution to the diquark $T$ matrix is crucial for the structure of the nucleon: without its inclusion the attraction in the scalar channel is too weak to form a three-body bound state.
We use a Nambu-Jona Lasinio type model to investigate the phase diagram of dense quark matter under neutron star conditions in mean field approximation. The model contains selfconsistently determined quark masses and allows for diquark condensation in the scalar as well as in the pseudoscalar channel. The latter gives rise to the possibility of K^0 condensation in the CFL phase. In agreement with earlier studies we find that this CFLK^0 phase covers large regions of the phase diagram and that the predominant part of this phase is fully gapped. We show, however, that there exists a region at ve…
Investigations of deconfined quark matter within NJL-type models are reviewed, focusing on the regime of low temperatures and ``moderate'' densities, which is not accessible by perturbative QCD. Central issue is the interplay between chiral symmetry restoration and the formation of color superconducting phases. In order to lay a solid ground for this analysis, we begin with a rather detailed discussion of two and three-flavor NJL models and their phase structure, neglecting the possibility of diquark pairing in a first step. An important aspect of this part is a comparison with the MIT bag mod…
We study the interplay of the chiral and the color superconducting phase transitions in an extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a multi-quark interaction that produces the nonlinear chiral-diquark coupling. We observe that this nonlinear coupling adds up coherently with the ω^2 interaction to produce the chiral-color superconductivity coexistence phase or cancel each other depending on its sign. We discuss that large coexistence region in the phase diagram is consistent with the quark-diquark picture for the nucleon whereas its smallness is the prerequisite for the applicability of the Ginz…
The chiral phase transition and color superconductivity in an extended NJL model with eight-quark interactions are studied. The scalar-type nonlinear term hastens the chiral phase transition, the scalar-vector mixing term suppresses effects of the vector-type linear term and the scalar-diquark mixing term makes the coexisting phase wider.
We calculate the leading-twist, helicity-independent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton, at finite skewness, in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chomodynamics (QCD). The NJL model reproduces low-energy characteristics of QCD, including dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). The proton bound-state amplitude is solved for using the Faddeev equation in a quark-diquark approximation, including both dynamical scalar and axial vector diquarks. GPDs are calculated using a dressed non-local correlator, consistent with DCSB, which is obtained by solving a Bethe-Salp…
A review of the underlying ideas of the Interacting Quark Diquark Model (IQDM) that asses the baryon spectroscopy in terms of quark diquark degrees of freedom is given, together with a discussion of the missing resonances problem. Some ideas about its generalization the heavy baryon spectroscopy is given.s of freedom is given, together with a discussion of the missing resonances problem. Some ideas about its generalization the heavy baryon spectroscopy is given. The results are compared to the existing experimental data.
We present results of a Monte Carlo simulation of a 2+1 dimensional Nambu - Jona-Lasinio model including diquark source terms. A diquark condensate <qq> is measured as a function of source strength j. In the vacuum phase <qq> vanishes linearly with j as expected, but simulations in a region with non-zero baryon density suggest a power-law scaling and hence a critical system for all mu > mu_c. There is no diquark condensation signalling superfluidity. Comparisons are drawn with known results in two dimensional theories, and with the pseudogap phase in cuprate superconductors. We also measure th…
Chiral symmetry is always broken in cold, dense matter, by chiral condensation at low densities and by diquark condensation at high density. We construct here, within a schematic Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, the corresponding generalized Nambu-Goldstone pion, $π_G$. As we show, the $π_G$ mode naturally emerges as a linear combination of the $\langle \bar{q}q\rangle$ vacuum pion $π$ and the $\langle qq \rangle$ diquark condensate pion $\tildeπ$, with $q$ the quark field, and continuously evolves with increasing density from being $π$-like in the vacuum to $\tildeπ$-like in the high density d…
The recently developed Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model is used as an effective chiral quark theory to calculate the quark fragmentation functions to pions, kaons, nucleons, and antinucleons. The effects of the vector mesons rho, K* and phi on the production of secondary pions and kaons are included. The fragmentation processes to nucleons and antinucleons are described by using the quark-diquark picture, which has been shown to give a reasonable description of quark distribution functions. We incorporate effects of next-to-leading order (NLO) in the Q^2 evolution, and compare our results …
The relativistic interacting quark-diquark model, constructed in the framework of point form dynamics, is extended to strange baryons. The strange and nonstrange baryon spectra are calculated and compared with the experimental data.
The excitation energy spectra of heavy baryons consisting of a heavy quark and two light quarks are investigated by using diquark models in order to examine the nature of the diquark as a constituent of single heavy baryons. We consider two diquark models; in model A the diquark is treated as a point-like particle, while it has a spatial size in model B. We determine the masses of scalar and axial vector diquarks by the mass difference of the ground state charmed baryons to the $Λ_{c}$ baryon, while the mass of the $ud$ scalar diquark in the $Λ_{c}$ baryon is assumed to be 500 MeV as a referen…
A Bethe-Salpeter-Faddeev (BSF) calculation is performed for the pentaquark $Θ^+$ in the diquark picture of Jaffe and Wilczek in which $Θ^+$ is a diquark-diquark-${\bar s}$ three-body system. Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is used to calculate the lowest order diagrams in the two-body scatterings of ${\bar s}D$ and $D D$. With the use of coupling constants determined from the meson sector, we find that ${\bar s}D$ interaction is attractive while $DD$ interaction is repulsive, and there is no bound $\frac 12^+$ pentaquark state. A bound pentaquark $Θ^+$ can only be obtained with unphysically str…
We reexamine the recent instanton motivated studies of Alford, Rajagopal and Wilczek, and Berges and Rajagopal in the framework of the standard SU(2) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The chiral phase diagram is calculated in the temperature--density plane, and the pressure is evaluated as the function of the density. Obtaining simple approximate relations describing the $T$-$μ$ and $T$-$p_F$ phase transition lines we find that the results of the instanton based model and that of the NJL model are identical. The diquark transition line is also given.
The excitation energies of the $Λ_{c}$ and $Λ_{b}$ baryons are investigated in a finite-size diquark potential model, in which the heavy baryons are treated as bound states of a charm quark and a scalar-isoscalar diquark. The diquark is considered as a sizable object. The quark-diquark interaction is calculated as a sum of the quark-quark interaction which is assumed to be half of the quark-antiquark interaction for the color singlet. The potential parameters in the quark-antiquark interaction are fixed so as to reproduce the charmonium spectrum. We find the diquark size to be 1.1 fm for the d…
Nucleon form factors are calculated in a relativistic diquark--quark picture based on the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The nucleon wave function is obtained in a static approximation to the quark exchange interaction between the valence quark and the diquark. We evaluate the valence quark and $0^+$--diquark contribution to the nucleon electromagnetic and weak currents. We find reasonable electric charge radii, magnetic moments as in the additive diquark model, and $g_A \approx 1$. We discuss the dependence on the model parameters.
A schematic NJL-type model is employed to investigate kaon and pion condensation in deconfined quark matter in the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase, explicitly referring to quark degrees of freedom. To that end we allow for non-vanishing pseudoscalar diquark condensates in addition to the scalar ones which constitute the CFL phase. Color neutrality is ensured by the appropriate choice of color chemical potentials. The dependence of the free energy in the Goldstone condensed phases on quark masses and charge chemical potentials is found to be in good qualitative -- in most cases also quantitativ…
We briefly describe our relativistic quark-diquark model, developed within the framework of point form dynamics, which is the relativistic extension of the interacting quark-diquark model. In order to do that we have to show the main properties and quantum numbers of the effective degree of freedom of constituent diquark. Our results for the nonstrange baryon spectrum and for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors are discussed.
The possibility to have diquark configuration in heavy baryons, such as Lambda_c and Lambda_b, is examined by a nonrelativistic potential model with a heavy quark and a light scalar diquark. Assuming that the Lambda_c and Lambda_b baryons are composed of the heavy quark and the point-like scalar-isoscalar ud diquark, we solve the two-body Schrodinger equation with the Coulomb plus linear potential and obtain the energy spectra for the heavy baryons. Contrary to our expectation, it is found that the potential determined by the quarkonium spectra fails to reproduce the excitation spectra of the …
We check a commonly used approximation in which a baryon with a heavy quark is described as a heavy quark-light diquark system. The heavy quark influences the diquark internal motion reducing the average distance between the two light quarks. Besides, we show how the average distance between the heavy quark and any of the light quarks, and that between the heavy quark and the center of mass of the light diquark, are smaller than the distance between the two light quarks, which seems to contradict the heavy quark-light diquark picture. This latter result is in agreement with expectations from Q…
We study the nucleon solution of the relativistic Faddeev equation as a function of density in the framework of a generalized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We truncate the interacting two-body channels to the scalar diquark channel, the coupling constant of which is treated as a parameter. A 3-momentum cut-off is used to regularize the model. The Faddeev equation is solved numerically using the methods developed by Tjon and others. At zero density the nucleon is bound only for unrealistically large values of the scalar coupling and this binding energy decreases quickly with increasing density.
We study the structure of the nuclear force by using a path-integral hadronization approach in a chiral quark-diquark model. After the construction of the chiral quark-diquark model, we hadronize it to obtain a meson-baryon Lagrangian. The effective meson-baryon Lagrangian incorporates chiral symmetry and the composite description of the mesons and baryons. Using the effective meson-baryon Lagrangian we investigate the structure of the nuclear force in the simple case of neglecting the axial-vector diquark. It is shown that the meson-baryon Lagrangian contains two kinds of the nuclear force; t…
In this paper, the NJL-type model is used to investigate the color superconductivity. The four-fermion interactions of the NJL-type model are Fierz-transformed into two different classes, i.e., the quark-antiquark and the quark-quark interaction channels, associated with the chiral symmetry breaking and color superconductivity respectively. We conclude that the weighting factor between quark-antiquark and quark-quark interaction channels has significance on the phase structure when the mean-field approximation is employed, and the baryon number density gives a tight constraint on the weighting…
Quark-hadron matter at finite temperature and density is studied using a two-flavor, color SU(2) (P)NJL model. The hadronic effective Lagrangian, derived by bosonization of the quark fields and renormalized using the Eguchi method, emerges in the form of an extended linear sigma model with meson and diquark-baryon fields. Chiral and diquark condensates are studied as functions of temperature and baryon density. Masses of mesons and diquark-baryons are calculated with and without the Polyakov loop effect. We investigate the equation of state of quark-hadron matter by taking into account the con…
The quark-hadron phase transition at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential is investigated in an extended NJL model with scalar-vector eight-point interaction by comparing the pressure of symmetric nuclear matter with that of the quark matter. As a result, the extended NJL phase diagram is obtained in the temperature-baryon chemical potential plane and the effects of the scalar-vector coupling constant G_{sv}^q on the chiral phase transition are summarized. It is shown that a quarkyonic-like phase in which the chiral symmetry is restored but the elementary excitation modes are nucle…
In this thesis a model framework for describing baryons as diquark-quark bound states is presented which is formulated in an explicitly covariant manner. The relativistic bound state problem for three quarks is considered. Diquarks are introduced as separable correlations in the two-quark correlation function and thereby baryons are described by a Bethe-Salpeter equation for bound states of quark and diquark which interact by quark exchange. In analogy to the meson spectrum, scalar and axialvector diquarks are considered to be the most important two-quark configurations within baryons. The num…
We compare the mass-radius relationship of strange stars obtained in two theoretical frameworks describing the color-flavor-locking state of dense quark matter: The semi-empirical MIT model and a self-consistent approach using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. In the simplest MIT model extended to include pairing, one can make the equation of state stiffer by increasing the gap parameter so that larger maximum masses for these objects can be reached. In the NJL model, however, such an effect is not possible. To increase the gap parameter within the NJL model to values comparable to those con…

A chiral effective theory of quarks and diquarks is formulated and applied to exotic tetraquarks and pentaquarks. The effective theory is similar to the chiral quark effective theory with the addition of diquark degrees of freedom and couplings to quarks. Chiral symmetry through generalized Goldberger-Treiman relations, fixes the mass splitting between the even and odd parity diquarks to be about 600 MeV. We provide an estimate of the parameters of the effective theory from both the random instanton model and known data on the low lying scalar nonet. We assess the static properties of the exot…
We study the color-spin interaction energy of a quark, a diquark and a baryon with their surrounding baryons and/or quark matter. This is accomplished by classifying all possible flavor and spin states of the resulting multiquark configuration in both the flavor SU(2) and SU(3) symmetric cases. We find that while the baryon has the lowest interaction energy when there is only a single surrounding baryon, the quark has the lowest interaction energy when the surrounding has more than three baryons or becomes a quark gas. As the short range nucleon-nucleon interactions are dominated by the color-…
The baryon octet and decuplet masses and Bethe-Salpeter vertex and wave functions are calculated in the ladder approximation to the quark exchange between a scalar or axialvector diquark and a constituent quark. These functions reflecting full Lorentz covariance are given in terms of an expansion in Gegenbauer polynomials. In the rest frame of the baryon, a complete partial wave decomposition of the Bethe-Salpeter wave function is performed. The confinement of quarks and diquarks is implemented via a parametrisation of the corresponding propagators. We also discuss some aspects of the momentum…
We discuss the net quark and isovector fluctuations as well as off-diagonal quark flavor susceptibilities along the chiral phase transition line in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The model is formulated at non-zero quark and isospin chemical potentials with non-vanishing vector couplings in the iso-scalar and iso-vector channels. We study the influence of the quark chemical potential on the quark flavour susceptibilities in detail and the dependence of the results on model parameters as well as on the quark mass. The NJL model findings are compared with recent lattice results obtained in…
We employ the Nambu Jona--Lasinio model to determine the vacuum pressure on the quarks in a baryon and hence their density inside. Then we estimate the baryonic masses by implementing the local density approximation for the mean field quark energies obtained in a uniform and isotropic system. We obtain a fair agreement with the experimental masses.
Lattice data on QCD thermodynamics, especially recent study of high order susceptibilities by UK-Bielefeld collaboration, have provided valuable information about matter properties around and above the critical temperature $T_c$. In this work we tried to understand what physical picture would explain these numerical data. We found two scenarios which will do it: (i) a quark quasiparticle gas, with the effective mass which is strongly $decreasing$ near the phase boundary into the QGP phase; or (ii) a picture including baryons at $T>T_c$, with the mass rapidly $increasing$ across the phase bound…
We study the formation of baryons as composed of quarks and diquarks in hot and dense hadronic matter in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL)--type model. We first solve the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the diquark propagator and then use this to solve the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the baryon propagator. We find that stable baryon resonances exist only in the phase of broken chiral symmetry. In the chirally symmetric phase, we do not find a pole in the baryon propagator. In the color-superconducting phase, there is a pole, but is has a large decay width. The diquark does not need to be stable in ord…
We present initial results of a numerical investigation of the chiral symmetry restoring transition in the (3+1)-dimensional Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model with both non-zero baryon chemical potential (mu_B) and isospin chemical potential (mu_I). With non-zero isospin chemical potential, the model suffers from a sign problem. We proceed in two ways: (i) We perform ``partially quenched'' simulations in which mu_I is made non-zero only during the measurement of chiral observables; (ii) We perform full simulations with imaginary isospin chemical potential with the aim to analytically continue result…
We study the baryonic fluctuations from second to eighth order involving electric charge, baryon number and strangeness below the quark-gluon plasma crossover and numerically known from lattice QCD calculations. By considering a particular realization of the Hadron Resonance Gas model, we provide evidence on the dominant role of quark-diquark degrees of freedom to describe excited baryonic resonances. After proving by means of suitable Polyakov loop correlators that the quark-diquark and the quark-antiquark forces coincide, $V_{\bar q q } (r) = V_{\bar q D } (r) + \textrm{const}$, we find that…
We investigate the phase diagram of isospin asymmetric matter at T=0 in the two flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Our approach describes the single nucleon as a confined quark-diquark state, the saturation properties of nuclear matter at normal densities, and the phase transition to normal or color superconducting quark matter at higher densities. The resulting equation of state of charge neutral matter is discussed.
We study the effect of a large magnetic field on the chiral and diquark condensates in a regime of moderately dense quark matter. Our focus is on the inter-dependence of the two condensates through non-perturbative quark mass and strong coupling effects, which we address in a 2-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. For magnetic fields $eB\lesssim 0.01$ GeV$^2$ (corresponding to $B\lesssim 10^{18}$G), our results agree qualitatively with the zero-field study of Huang et al., who found a mixed broken phase region where the chiral and superconducting gap are both non-zero. For $eB\gtrsim 0.01$ G…
Fluctuations of conserved charges such as baryon number, electric charge and strangeness may provide a test for completeness of states in lattice QCD for three light flavors. We elaborate on the idea that the corresponding susceptibilities can be saturated with excited baryonic states with an underlying quark-diquark structure with a linearly confining interaction. Using Polyakov-loop correlators we show that in the static limit, the quark-diquark potential coincides with the quark-antiquark potential in marked agreement with recent lattice studies. We thus study in a quark-diquark model the b…
We introduce an improved mass formula for the nucleon and delta resonances and show how it emerges from AdS/QCD in a straightforward extension of the 'metric soft wall' gravity dual. The resulting spectrum depends on just one adjustable parameter, characterizing confinement-induced IR deformations of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) metric, and on the fraction of 'good' (i.e. maximally attractive) diquarks in the baryon's quark model wave function. Despite its simplicity, the predicted spectrum describes the masses of all 48 observed light-quark baryon states and their linear trajectory structure with…
With the exception of confinement the three-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL_3) model incorporates many of the essential properties of QCD. We discuss the critical properties of the model at nonzero temperature T and/or nonzero chemical potential $μ$. We show that the universality class of the thermal transition is that of the d=2 classical spin model with the same symmetry. We provide evidence for the existence of a tricritical point in the ($μ$,temperature) plane. We also discuss numerical results by Hands et al. which showed that the system is critical for $μ>μ_c$ and the diquark condens…
