With the aim of deriving symmetric hyperbolic free-evolution systems for GR that possess Hamiltonian structure and allow for the popular puncture gauge condition we analyze the hyperbolicity of Hamiltonian systems. We develop helpful tools which are applicable to either the first order in time, second order in space or the fully second order form of the equations of motion. For toy models we find that the Hamiltonian structure can simplify the proof of symmetric hyperbolicity. In GR we use a special structure of the principal part to prove symmetric hyperbolicity of a formulation that includes gauge conditions which are very similar to the puncture gauge.
Well-posedness of the initial (boundary) value problem is an essential property, both of meaningful physical models and of numerical applications. To prove well-posedness of wave-type equations their level of hyperbolicity is an essential ingredient. We develop helpful tools and classify a large class of Hamiltonian versions of Einstein's equations with live gauge conditions with respect to their hyperbolicity. Finally we find a symmetric hyperbolic Hamiltonian formulation that allows for gauge conditions which are similar to the puncture gauge.
We consider two strongly hyperbolic Hamiltonian formulations of general relativity and their numerical integration with a free and a partially constrained symplectic integrator. In those formulations we use hyperbolic drivers for the shift and in one case also for the densitized lapse. A system where the densitized lapse is an external field allows to enforce the momentum constraints in a holonomically constrained Hamiltonian system and to turn the Hamilton constraint function from a weak to a strong invariant. These schemes are tested in a perturbed Minkowski and the Schwarzschild space-time.…

Motivated by the problem of solving the Einstein equations, we discuss high order finite difference discretizations of first order in time, second order in space hyperbolic systems.Particular attention is paid to the case when first order derivatives that can be identified with advection terms are approximated with non-centered finite difference operators. We first derive general properties of these discrete operators, then we extend a known result on numerical stability for such systems to general order of accuracy. As an application we analyze the shifted wave equation, including the behavior …
We consider gauge theories from the free evolution point of view, in which initial data satisfying constraints of a theory are given. Because the constraints are compatible with the field equations they remain so. We study a model constrained Hamiltonian theory and identify a particular structure in the equations of motion which we call the standard gauge freedom. The pure gauge subsystem of this model theory is identified and the manner in which the gauge variables couple to the field equations is presented. We demonstrate that the set of gauge choices that can be coupled to the field equatio…
Bondi-like (single-null) characteristic formulations of general relativity are used for numerical work in both asymptotically flat and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Well-posedness of the resulting systems of partial differential equations, however, remains an open question. The answer to this question affects accuracy, and potentially the reliability of conclusions drawn from numerical studies based on such formulations. A numerical approximation can converge to the continuum limit only for well-posed systems; for the initial value problem in the $L^2$ norm this is characterized by strong hyperbo…
A connection-independent formulation of general relativity is presented, in which the dynamics does not depend on the choice of connection. The gravity action in this formulation includes one additional scalar term in addition to the Einstein-Hilbert action. No conditions on the connection are imposed. Nevertheless, this formulation yields the Einstein equations, without adding the Gibbons-Hawking-York term even when a manifold has a boundary. Furthermore, this formulation yields a unified description of general relativity, teleparallel gravity, and symmetric teleparallel gravity.
We present a symmetric hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein equations in affine-null coordinates. Giannakopoulos et. al. (arXiv:2007.06419) recently showed that the most commonly numerically implemented formulations of the Einstein equations in affine-null coordinates (and other single-null coordinate systems) are only weakly-but not strongly-hyperbolic. By making use of the tetrad-based Newman-Penrose formalism, our formulation avoids the hyperbolicity problems of the formulations investigated by Giannakopoulos et. al. We discuss a potential application of our formulation for studying gravi…
An action principle for the generalized harmonic formulation of general relativity is presented. The action is a functional of the spacetime metric and the gauge source vector. An action principle for the Z4 formulation of general relativity has been proposed recently by Bona, Bona--Casas and Palenzuela (BBP). The relationship between the generalized harmonic action and the BBP action is discussed in detail.
New equations are derived which describe the evolution in curved spacetime of null geodesics with non-zero (complex) shear $σ$ and twist $ω$ rates resembling Grishchuk's squeezed states evolution equations from inflationary cosmology. A ``squeeze" angle $ϕ$ (obtained from the direction of the major axis of the elliptical cross section of the congruence and the direction of the shear rate), an ellipse axis ratio parameter $w$ and a rotation angle $v$ are the primary variables. Interpreting $ϕ$ as a polar angle and $w$ as a radial distance, we obtain a mapping to points on the upper sheet, $H_{2…
We discuss the relation between the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi theory and the De Donder-Weyl Hamilton-Jacobi theory known in the calculus of variations using the examples of a scalar field in curved space-time and general relativity. By restricting ourselves to the Gaussian coordinates we show how the canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equation of general relativity can be derived from the De Donder-Weyl Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of the Einstein equations.
Axisymmetric Solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations are found in the Papapetrou-Weyl gauge. The solutions depend on two pairs of functionals, each pair of two functions depends on a different arbitrarily chosen function of one variable. Some examples are given.
In this paper we shall analyse the structure of the Cauchy Problem (CP briefly) for General Relativity (GR briefly) by applying the theory of first order symmetric hyperbolic systems.
In this paper, we continue our investigations of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein vacuum constraints. Our previous studies of the asymptotically flat setting provided strong evidence for unstable asymptotics which we were able to resolve by introducing a certain modification of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation. The primary focus of the present paper here is the asymptotically hyperboloidal setting. We provide evidence through a mixture of numerical and analytical methods that the asymptotics of the solutions of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation is stable, an…
We examine hyperbolicity of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics with divergence cleaning, a flux-balance law form of the model not covered by our earlier analysis. The calculations rely again on a dual-frame approach, which allows us to effectively exploit the structure present in the principal part. We find, in contrast to the standard flux-balance law form of the equations, that this formulation is strongly hyperbolic, and thus admits a well-posed initial value problem. Formulations involving the vector potential as an evolved quantity are then considered. Carefully reducing to first o…
$3+1$ formulations of the Einstein field equations have become an invaluable tool in Numerical relativity, having been used successfully in modeling spacetimes of black hole collisions, stellar collapse and other complex systems. It is plausible that similar considerations could prove fruitful for modified gravity theories. In this article, we pursue from a numerical relativistic viewpoint the $3+1$ formulation of metric $f(R)$ gravity as it arises from the fourth order equations of motion, without invoking the dynamical equivalence with Brans-Dicke theories. We present the resulting system of…
We present a set of three PDEs for three real scalars that are equivalent to the full Einstein equations without any symmetry assumptions. The main variables in this formulation are null surfaces and a conformal factor. Furthermore, for asymptotically flat spacetimes the free data (representing gravitational radiation) enters as the source term in the resulting equations. This could be important for an asymptotic quantization procedure.
The application of numerical relativity to cosmological spacetimes is providing new insights into the behavior of Einstein's equations, beyond common approximations. In order for simulations to be performed as accurately and efficiently as possible, we investigate a novel formulation of Einstein's equations. This formulation evolves differences from a "reference" solution describing the dominant behavior of the spacetime, which mitigates error due to both truncation and approximate finite difference calculations. We find that the error in solutions obtained using the reference formulation can …
We derive the pure spin connection and constraint-free BF formulations of real four-dimensional Lorentzian vacuum General Relativity. In contrast to the existing complex formulations, an important advantage is that they do not require the reality constraints that complicate quantization. We also consider the corresponding modified gravity theories and point out that, contrary to their self-dual analogues, they are not viable because they necessarily contain ghosts. In particular, this constrains the set of potentially viable unified theories one can build by extending the gauge group to the on…
We discuss high order absorbing constraint preserving boundary conditions for the Z4c formulation of general relativity coupled to the moving puncture family of gauges. We are primarily concerned with the constraint preservation and absorption properties of these conditions. In the frozen coefficient approximation, with an appropriate first order pseudo-differential reduction, we show that the constraint subsystem is boundary stable on a four dimensional compact manifold. We analyze the remainder of the initial boundary value problem for a spherical reduction of the Z4c formulation with a part…
A dual foliation treatment of General Relativity is presented. The basic idea of the construction is to consider two foliations of a spacetime by spacelike hypersurfaces and relate the two geometries. The treatment is expected to be useful in various situations, and in particular whenever one would like to compare objects represented in different coordinates. Potential examples include the construction of initial data and the study of trapped tubes. It is common for studies in mathematical relativity to employ a double-null gauge. In such studies local well-posedness is treated by referring ba…
The initial singularity problem in standard general relativity is treated on the light of a viewpoint asserting that this formulation of Einstein's theory and its conformal formulations are physically equivalent. We show that flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes and open dust-filled and radiation-filled universes are singularity free when described in terms of the formulation of general relativity conformal to the canonical one.
This is the author Master's Thesis and its main purpose is to demonstrate that it is possible to formulate Einstein's field equations as an initial value problem. The first chapter concerns the hyperbolic equations theory. The definition of hyperbolic equation is given and the concept of wavelike propagation is presented. Hence, once Riemann kernel definition is given, Riemann method to solve an hyperbolic equation in two variables is showed. The second chapter is about the fundamental solution and its relation to Riemann kernel. Therefore, the study of the fundamental solutions proceeds by sh…
In this paper we consider the hyperbolic formulation of the constraints introduced by Rácz. Using the numerical framework recently developed by us we construct initial data sets which can be interpreted as nonlinear perturbations of Schwarzschild data in Kerr-Schild coordinates and investigate their asymptotics. Our results suggest that, unless one finds a way to exploit the freedom to pick the free part of the initial data in some suitable way, generic initial data sets obtained by this method may violate fundamental asymptotic conditions.
We give a pedagogical introduction into an old, but unfortunately not commonly known formulation of GR in terms of self-dual two-forms due to in particular Jerzy Plebanski. Our presentation is rather explicit in that we show how the familiar textbook solutions: Schwarzschild, Volkoff-Oppenheimer, as well as those describing the Newtonian limit, a gravitational wave and the homogeneous isotropic Universe can be obtained within this formalism. Our description shows how Plebanski formulation gives quite an economical alternative to the usual metric and frame-based schemes for deriving Einstein eq…
