Characteristic dimensions of carbon nanoscrolls - "buckyrolls" - are calculated by analyzing the competition between elastic, van der Waals, and electrostatic energies for representative models of suspended and substrate-deposited graphene samples. The results are consistent with both atomistic simulations and experimental observations of scrolled graphene edges. Electrostatic control of the wrapping is shown to be practically feasible and its possible device applications are indicated.

In this work we describe a proposal for a graphene-based nanostructure that modulates electric current even in the absence of a gap in the band structure. The device consists of a graphene p-n junction that acts as a Veselago lens that focuses ballistic electrons on the output lead. Applying external (electric and magnetic) fields changes the position of the output focus, reducing the transmission. Such device can be applied to low power field effect transistors, which can benefit from graphene's high electronic mobility.
How to form carbon nanoscrolls with the non-uniform curvatures is worthy of a detailed investigation. The first-principles method is suitable in studying the combined effects due to the finite-size confinement, the edge-dependent interactions, the interlayer atomic interactions, the mechanical strains, and the magnetic configurations. The complex mechanisms can induce the unusual essential properties, e.g., the optimal structures, magnetisms, band gaps and energy dispersions. To reach a stable spiral profile, the requirements on the critical nanoribbon width and overlapping length will be thor…
In a magnetic field few-layer graphene supports, at the lowest Landau level, a multiplet of zero-mode levels nearly degenerate in orbitals as well as in spins and valleys. Those pseudo-zero-mode (PZM) levels are generally sensitive to interactions and external perturbations, and have a crossing among themselves or with other higher Landau levels when an external field is swept over a certain range. A close study is made of how such PZM levels evolve when they are gradually brought from empty to filled levels under many-body interactions. It is pointed out that the level spectra generally avoid…
It is shown that potential barriers in bilayer graphene (BLG) and monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can split a valley unpolarized incident current into reflected and transmitted currents with opposite valley polarization. Valley asymmetric transmission inevitably occurs because of the low symmetry of the total Hamiltonian and when total external reflection occurs the transmission is 100% valley polarized in BLG and 100% spin and valley polarized in TMDs, except for exponentially small corrections. By adjusting the potential, 100% polarization can be obtained regardless of the …
We study the quantum nonlinear planar Hall effect in bilayer graphene under a steady in-plane magnetic field. When time-reversal symmetry is broken by the magnetic field, a charge current occurs in the second-order response to an external electric field, as a result of the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. We have shown that a nonlinear planar Hall effect originating from the anomalous velocity is deduced by an orbital effect of an in-plane magnetic field on electrons in bilayer graphene in the complete absence of spin-orbit coupling. Taking into account the symmetry analysis, we deriv…
In this work we study the behavior of massless fermions in a graphene wormhole and in the presence of an external magnetic field. The graphene wormhole is made from two sheets of graphene that play the roles of asymptotically flat spaces connected through a carbon nanotube with a zig-zag boundary. We solve the massless Dirac equation in this geometry and analyze its wave function. We show that the energy spectra of these solutions exhibit similar behavior to Landau levels.

We study Dirac fermions in gapped graphene that are subjected to a magnetic field and a potential barrier harmonically oscillating in time. The tunneling modes inside the gap and the associated Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts are analytically investigated. We show that the GH shifts in transmission for the central band and the first two sidebands change sign at the Dirac points $ε+l\hbar\tildeω$ $(l=0,\pm 1)$. We also find that the GH shifts can be either negative or positive and becomes zero at transmission resonances.
