We present the first astrophysical measurement of the pressure of cold matter above nuclear saturation density, based on recently determined masses and radii of three neutron stars. The pressure at higher densities are below the predictions of equations of state that account only for nucleonic degrees of freedom, and thus present a challenge to the microscopic theory of neutron star matter.
Taking into account the terrestrial experiments and the recent astrophysical observations of neutron stars and gravitational-wave signals, we impose restrictions on the equation of state (EoS) for isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter. Using the relativistic mean-field model with SU(3) flavor symmetry, we investigate the impacts of effective nucleon mass, nuclear incompressibility, and slope parameter of nuclear symmetry energy on the nuclear and neutron-star properties. It is found that the astrophysical information of massive neutron stars and tidal deformabilities as well as the nuclear experim…
Observations of neutron stars (NSs) by the LIGO-Virgo and NICER collaborations have provided reasonably precise measurements of their various macroscopic properties. In this paper, we employ a Bayesian framework to combine them and place improved joint constraints on the properties of NS equation of state (EoS). We use a hybrid EoS formulation that employs a parabolic expansion-based nuclear empirical parameterization around the nuclear saturation density augmented by a generic 3-segment piecewise polytrope model at higher densities. Within the $90 \%$ credible level this parameterization pred…
We review recent work examining the influence of fission in rapid neutron capture ($r$-process) nucleosynthesis which can take place in astrophysical environments. We briefly discuss the impact of uncertain fission barriers and fission rates on the population of heavy actinide species. We demonstrate the influence of the fission fragment distributions for neutron-rich nuclei and discuss currently available treatments, including recent macroscopic-microscopic calculations. We conclude by comparing our nucleosynthesis results directly with stellar data for metal-poor stars rich in $r$-process el…

Neutron tunneling in neutron star crusts can release enormous amounts of energy on a short timescale. We have clarified aspects of this process occurring in the outer crust regions of neutron stars when oscillations or cataclysmic events changes the crustal ambient density. We report a time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov model to determine the rate of neutron diffusion and conclude that a large amount of energy, in the range of 10^40 - 10^44 erg, can be released rapidly. We suggest that this mechanism may be the source of hitherto unknown phenomena such as the Fast Radio Bursts (FRBS).
This paper reviews the current understanding of double neutron star and neutron star black hole binaries. It addresses mainly (nuclear) astrophysics aspects of compact binary mergers and thus complements recent reviews that have emphasized the numerical relativity viewpoint. In particular, the paper discusses different channels to release neutron-rich matter into the host galaxy, connections between compact binary mergers and short Gamma-ray bursts and accompanying electromagnetic signals.
The symmetry energy and its density dependence are crucial inputs for many nuclear physics and astrophysics applications, as they determine properties ranging from the neutron-skin thickness of nuclei to the crust thickness and the radius of neutron stars. Recently, PREX-II reported a value of $0.283 \pm 0.071$ fm for the neutron-skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb, implying a slope parameter $L = 106 \pm 37$ MeV, larger than most ranges obtained from microscopic calculations and other nuclear experiments. We use a nonparametric equation of state representation based on Gaussian processes to constrai…

In recent years, a lot of work was done that has revealed some very interesting properties of neutron stars. One can relate the first few multipole moments of a neutron star, or quantities that can be derived from them, with relations that are independent of the equation of state (EoS). This is a very significant result that has great implications for the description of neutron stars and in particular for the description of the spacetime around them. Additionally, it was recently shown that there is a four parameter analytic spacetime, known as the two-soliton spacetime, which can accurately c…
Despite their long history and astrophysical importance, some of the key properties of neutron stars are still uncertain. The extreme conditions encountered in their interiors, involving matter of uncertain composition at extreme density and isospin asymmetry, uniquely determine the stars' macroscopic properties within General Relativity. Astrophysical constraints on those macroscopic properties, such as neutron star masses and radii, have long been used to understand the microscopic properties of the matter that forms them. In this article we discuss another astrophysically observable macrosc…
Ever since the discovery of neutron stars it has been realized that they serve as probes of a physical regime that cannot be accessed in laboratories: strongly degenerate matter at several times nuclear saturation density. Existing nuclear theories diverge widely in their predictions about such matter. It could be that the matter is primarily nucleons, but it is also possible that exotic species such as hyperons, free quarks, condensates, or strange matter may dominate this regime. Astronomical observations of cold high-density matter are necessarily indirect, which means that we must rely on …
Merging binary neutron stars are thought to be formed predominantly via isolated binary evolution. In this standard formation scenario, the first-born neutron star goes through a recycling process and might be rapidly spinning during the final inspiral, whereas the second-born star is expected to have effectively zero spin at merger. Based on this feature, we propose a new framework for the astrophysical characterization of binary neutron stars observed from their gravitational wave emission. We further propose a prior for the dimensionless spins of recycled neutron stars, given by a gamma dis…
The first inspiral of two neutron stars observed in gravitational waves was remarkably close, allowing the kind of simultaneous gravitational wave and electromagnetic observation that had not been expected for several years. Their merger, followed by a gamma-ray burst and a kilonova, was observed across the spectral bands of electromagnetic telescopes. These GW and electromagnetic observations have led to dramatic advances in understanding short gamma-ray bursts; determining the origin of the heaviest elements; and determining the maximum mass of neutron stars. From the imprint of tides on the…
Background: The density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy is crucial in determining several properties of finite nuclei to the neutron stars with mass $\sim$ 1.4 $M_\odot$. The values of neutron skin thickness, isovector giant dipole resonances energies and various nuclear reaction cross-sections in asymmetric nuclei have been utilized to determine the slope of symmetry energy ($L_0$) at the saturation density. Recent PREX-II and CREX measurements of neutron skin thickness in $^{208}$Pb and $^{48}$Ca nuclei yield very different values of $L_0$ which overlap marginally within 90$\%$ confide…
Determining the Equation of State (EOS) of dense neutron-rich nuclear matter is a shared goal of both nuclear physics and astrophysics. Except possible phase transitions, the density dependence of nuclear symmetry \esym is the most uncertain part of the EOS of neutron-rich nucleonic matter especially at supra-saturation densities. Much progresses have been made in recent years in predicting the symmetry energy and understanding why it is still very uncertain using various microscopic nuclear many-body theories and phenomenological models. Simultaneously, significant progresses have also been m…
The properties of matter at ultra-high densities, low temperatures, and with a significant asymmetry between protons and neutrons can be studied exclusively through astrophysical observations of neutron stars. We show that measurements of the masses and radii of neutron stars can lead to tight constraints on the pressure of matter at three fiducial densities, from 1.85 to 7.4 times the density of nuclear saturation, in a manner that is largely model-independent and that captures the key characteristics of the equation of state. We demonstrate that observations with 10% uncertainties of at leas…
The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) recently measured the mass and equatorial radius of the isolated neutron star PSR J0030+0451. We use these measurements to infer the moment of inertia, the quadrupole moment, and the surface eccentricity of an isolated neutron star for the first time, using relations between these quantities that are insensitive to the unknown equation of state of supranuclear matter. We also use these results to forecast the moment of inertia of neutron star A in the double pulsar binary J0737-3039, a quantity anticipated to be directly measured in the co…
Neutron stars are the densest objects known in our visible universe. Properties of matter inside a neutron star are encoded in its equation of state, which has wide-ranging uncertainty from a theoretical perspective. With the current understanding of quantum chromodynamics, it is hard to determine the interactions of neutron star matter at such high densities. Also performing many body calculations is computationally intractable. Besides the constitution of the neutron star core is highly speculative -- it is not ruled out that it contains exotic matter like strange baryons, meson condensates,…
Large-scale calculations of the E1 strength are performed within the random phase approximation (RPA) based on the relativistic point-coupling mean field approach in order to derive the radiative neutron capture cross sections for all nuclei of astrophysical interest. While the coupling to the single-particle continuum is taken into account in an explicit and self-consistent way, additional corrections like the coupling to complex configurations and the temperature and deformation effects are included in a phenomenological way to account for a complete description of the nuclear dynamical prob…
Interpreting high-energy, astrophysical phenomena, such as supernova explosions or neutron-star collisions, requires a robust understanding of matter at supranuclear densities. However, our knowledge about dense matter explored in the cores of neutron stars remains limited. Fortunately, dense matter is not only probed in astrophysical observations, but also in terrestrial heavy-ion collision experiments. In this work, we use Bayesian inference to combine data from astrophysical multi-messenger observations of neutron stars and from heavy-ion collisions of gold nuclei at relativistic energies w…
We show that a primeval seed magnetic field arises due to spin-degeneracy breaking of fermions caused by the dragging of inertial frames in the curved spacetime of rotating astrophysical bodies. This seed magnetic field would arise even due to electrically neutral fermions such as neutrons. As an example, we show that an ideal neutron star rotating at $500$ revolutions per second, having mass $0.83$ M$_{\odot}$ and described by an ensemble of degenerate neutrons, would have $0.12$ Gauss seed magnetic field at its center arising through the breaking of spin-degeneracy.
In this study we explore the nucleosynthesis in the dynamic ejecta of compact binary mergers. We are particularly interested in the question how sensitive the resulting abundance patterns are to the parameters of the merging system. Therefore, we systematically investigate combinations of neutron star masses in the range from 1.0 to 2.0 \Msun and, for completeness, we compare the results with those from two simulations of a neutron star black hole merger. The ejecta masses vary by a factor of five for the studied systems, but all amounts are (within the uncertainties of the merger rates) compa…
We discuss different exotic phases and components of matter from the crust to the core of neutron stars based on theoretical models for equations of state relevant to core collapse supernova simulations and neutron star merger. Parameters of the models are constrained from laboratory experiments. It is observed that equations of state involving strangeness degrees of freedom such as hyperons and Bose-Einstein condensates are compatible with 2M$_{solar}$ neutron stars. The role of hyperons is explored on the evolution and stability of the protoneutron star (PNS) in the context of SN1987A. Momen…
Neutrino-driven ejecta in core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) offer an interesting astrophysical scenario where lighter heavy elements between Sr and Ag can be synthesized. Previous studies emphasized the important role that ($α,n$) reactions play in the production of these elements, particularly in neutron-rich and alpha-rich environments. In this paper, we have investigated the sensitivity of elemental abundances to specific ($α,n$) reaction-rate uncertainties under different astrophysical conditions. Following a Monte Carlo nucleosynthesis study with over 36 representative astrophysical wind c…
In a core collapse supernova, collective oscillations of neutrinos emitted by the proto-neutron star significantly modifies the partition of energy between different flavors in a way which is potentially important for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements at the outer layers. As the outcome of collective oscillations depends nonlinearly on the chosen initial conditions proto-neutron star, their systematical study across the proto-neutron star model space may provide answers to some key questions.
In the current work an equation of state model with a first-order phase transition for astrophysical applications is presented. The model is based on a two-phase approach for quark-hadron phase transitions, which leads by construction to a first-order phase transition. The resulting model has already been successfully used in several astrophysical applications, such as cold neutron stars, core-collapse supernova explosions and binary neutron star mergers. Main goal of this work is to present the details of the model, discuss certain features and eventually publish it in a tabulated form for fu…
In the crust of a neutron star, global torsional oscillations could occur in two elastic layers. The outer and inner layers are composed of spherical and cylindrical nuclei and of cylindrical holes (tubes) and spherical holes (bubbles), respectively, while between these two layers, a phase of slab-like (lasagna) nuclei with vanishingly small elasticity is sandwiched. In this work, we update systematic calculations of the eigenfrequencies of the fundamental oscillations in the inner layer by newly allowing for the presence of tubes. We find that the frequencies still depend strongly on the slop…
Mirror Dark Matter (MDM) has been considered as an elegant framework for a particle theory of Dark Matter (DM). It is supposed that there exists a dark sector which is mirror of the ordinary matter. Some MDM models allow particle interactions mirror and ordinary matter, in addition to the gravitational interaction. The possibility of neutron to mirror neutron transition has recently been discussed both from theoretical and experimental perspectives. This paper is based on a previous work in which we obtained stringent upper limits on the possibility of converting neutrons to mirror neutrons in…
The D1 family of parametrizations of the Gogny interaction commonly suffers from a rather soft neutron matter equation of state that leads to maximal masses of neutron stars well below the observational value of two solar masses. We propose a reparametrization scheme that preserves the good properties of the Gogny force but allows one to tune the density dependence of the symmetry energy, which, in turn, modifies the predictions for the maximum stellar mass. The scheme works well for D1M, and leads to a new parameter set, dubbed D1M*. In the neutron-star domain, D1M* predicts a maximal mass of…

Astrophysical explosions result from the release of magnetic, gravitational, or thermonuclear energy on dynamical timescales, typically the sound-crossing time for the system. These explosions include solar and stellar flares, eruptive phenomena in accretion disks, thermonuclear combustion on the surfaces of white dwarfs and neutron stars, violent magnetic reconnection in neutron stars, thermonuclear and gravitational collapse supernovae and cosmic gamma-ray bursts, each representing a different type and amount of energy release. This paper summarizes the properties of these explosions and des…
In this work we present an updated study of the flavor composition suggested by astrophysical neutrinos observed by IceCube. The main novelties compared to previous studies are the following: 1) we use the most recent measurements, namely 8 years of throughgoing muons and 7.5 years of High Energy Starting Events (HESE); 2) we consider a broken power law spectrum, in order to be consistent with the observations between 30 TeV and few PeV; 3) we use the throughgoing muon flux to predict the number of astrophysical HESE tracks. We show that accounting for the three previous elements, the result f…

The problem of having an accurate description of the spacetime around neutron stars is of great astrophysical interest. For astrophysical applications, one needs to have a metric that captures all the properties of the spacetime around a neutron star. Furthermore, an accurate appropriately parameterised metric, i.e., a metric that is given in terms of parameters that are directly related to the physical structure of the neutron star, could be used to solve the inverse problem, which is to infer the properties of the structure of a neutron star from astrophysical observations. In this work we p…
$f(R)$ theories of gravity are one of the most popular alternative explanations for dark energy and therefore studying the possible astrophysical implications of these theories is an important task. In the present paper we make a substantial advance in this direction by considering rapidly rotating neutron stars in $R^2$ gravity. The results are obtained numerically and the method we use is non-perturbative and self-consistent. The neutron star properties, such as mass, radius and moment of inertia, are studied in detail and the results show that rotation magnifies the deviations from general …
The secondary component of the GW190814 event left us with a question, "whether it is a supermassive neutron star or lightest black-hole?". Recently, Fattoyev et al. have obtained an energy density functional (EDF) named as BigApple, which reproduces the mass of the neutron star is 2.60 $M_\odot$ which is well consistent with GW190814 data. This study explores the properties of finite nuclei, nuclear matter, and neutron stars by using the BigApple EDF along with four well-known relativistic mean-field forces, namely NL3, G3, IOPB-I, and FSUGarnet. The finite nuclei properties like binding ener…
The characteristic physical timescales near stellar-mass compact objects are measured in milliseconds. These timescales -- the free-fall time, the fastest stable orbital period, and stellar spin periods -- encode the fundamental physical properties of compact objects: mass, radius, and angular momentum. The characteristic temperature of matter in the vicinity of neutron stars is such that the principal electromagnetic window into their realms is the X-ray band. Because of these connections to the fundamental properties of neutron stars, X-ray timing studies remain today the most direct means o…
Neutron stars and quark stars are ideal laboratories to study fundamental physics at supra nuclear densities and strong gravitational fields. Astrophysical observables, however, depend strongly on the star's internal structure, which is currently unknown due to uncertainties in the equation of state. Universal relations, however, exist among certain stellar observables that do not depend sensitively on the star's internal structure. One such set of relations is between the star's moment of inertia ($I$), its tidal Love number (Love) and its quadrupole moment ($Q$), the so-called I-Love-Q relat…
We present a generalized piecewise polytropic parameterization for the neutron-star equation of state using an ansatz that imposes continuity in not only pressure and energy density, but also in the speed of sound. The universe of candidate equations of state is shown to admit preferred dividing densities, determined by minimizing an error norm consisting of integral astrophysical observables. Generalized piecewise polytropes accurately reproduce astrophysical observables, such as mass, radius, tidal deformability and mode frequencies, as well as thermodynamic quantities, such as the adiabatic…
The composition of the early Solar System can be inferred from meteorites. Many elements heavier than iron were formed by the rapid neutron-capture process (r process), but the astrophysical sources where this occurred remain poorly understood. We demonstrate that the near-identical half-lives ($\simeq$ 15.6 Myr) of the radioactive r-process nuclei 129I and 247Cm preserve their ratio, irrespective of the time between production and incorporation into the Solar System. We constrain the last r-process source by comparing the measured meteoritic 129I / 247Cm = 438 $\pm$ 184 to nucleosynthesis cal…
We add an ensemble of nuclei to the equation of state for homogeneous nucleonic matter to generate a new set of models suitable for astrophysical simulations of core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers. We implement empirical constraints from (i) nuclear mass measurements, (ii) proton-proton scattering phase shifts, and (iii) neutron star observations. Our model is also guided by microscopic many-body theory calculations based on realistic nuclear forces, including the zero-temperature neutron matter equation of state from quantum Monte Carlo simulations and thermal contributions to t…
We study the properties of compact objects in a particular 4D Horndeski theory originating from higher dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Remarkably, an exact vacuum solution is known. This compact object differs from general relativity mostly in the strong field regime. We discuss some properties of black holes in this framework and investigate in detail the properties of neutron stars, both static and in slow rotation. We find that for relatively modest deviations from general relativity, the secondary object in GW190814 is compatible with being a slowly-rotating neutron star, withou…
Core-collapse supernovae produce elements between Fe and Ag depending on the properties of the ejected matter. Despite the fast progress in supernova simulations in the last decades, there are still uncertainties in the astrophysical conditions. In this paper we investigate the impact of astrophysical uncertainties on the nucleosynthesis. Since a systematic study based on trajectories from hydrodynamic simulations is computationally very expensive, we rely on a steady-state model. By varying the mass and radius of the proto-neutron star as well as electron fraction in the steady-state model, w…
This conference proceeding presents an overview of the modern approaches in the study of baryonic matter at high densities, focusing on the use of online repositories such as CompOSE and MUSES for the calculation of neutron star properties. In this context, relevant astrophysical constraints for the equations of state (mass-radius relation, speed of sound, tidal deformability) are discussed.
The determination of astrophysical reaction rates requires different approaches depending on the conditions in hydrostatic and explosive burning. The focus here is on astrophysical reaction rates for radiative neutron capture reactions. Relevant nucleosynthesis processes not only involve the s-process but also the i-, r- and $γ$-processes, which from the nuclear perspective mainly differ in the relative interaction energies of neutrons and nuclei, and in the nuclear level densities of the involved nuclei. Emphasis is put on the difference between reactions at low and high temperature. Possible…
Realistic nuclear level densities (NLDs) obtained within the spectral distribution method (SDM) are employed to study nuclear processes of astrophysical interest. The merit of SDM lies in the fact that the NLDs corresponding to many body shell model Hamiltonian consisting of residual interaction can be obtained for the full configurational space without recourse to the exact diagnolization of huge matrices. We calculate NLDs and s-wave neutron resonance spacings which agree reasonably well with the available experimental data. By employing these NLDs, we compute reaction cross-sections and ast…
The first neutron star (NS) merger observed by advanced LIGO and Virgo, GW170817, and its fireworks of electromagnetic counterparts across the entire electromagnetic spectrum marked the beginning of multi-messenger astronomy and astrophysics with gravitational waves. The ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared emission was consistent with being powered by the radioactive decay of nuclei synthesized in the merger ejecta by the rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Starting from an outline of the inferred properties of this 'kilonova' emission, I discuss possible astrophysical sites for r-p…
