We present a generalized piecewise polytropic parameterization for the neutron-star equation of state using an ansatz that imposes continuity in not only pressure and energy density, but also in the speed of sound. The universe of candidate equations of state is shown to admit preferred dividing densities, determined by minimizing an error norm consisting of integral astrophysical observables. Generalized piecewise polytropes accurately reproduce astrophysical observables, such as mass, radius, tidal deformability and mode frequencies, as well as thermodynamic quantities, such as the adiabatic index. This makes the new EOS useful for Bayesian parameter estimation from gravitational waveforms. Moreover, since they are differentiable, generalized piecewise polytropes can improve pointwise convergence in numerical relativity simulations of neutron stars. Existing implementations of piecewise polytropes can easily accommodate this generalization.
The historic first detection of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration has set a limit on the gravitational deformability of neutron stars. In contrast, radio observations of PSR J0740+6620 find a very massive neutron star. Tension between the small deformability and the large maximum mass may suggest that the pressure rises rapidly with density and thus the speed of sound in dense matter is likely a large fraction of the speed of light. We use these observations and simple constant sound-speed model equations of state to set a lower bound on the maximum speed …
The maximum mass limits of neutron stars in scalar-tensor gravity is discussed and compared with the limits set by general relativity. The limit is parametrized with respect to the combination of the nuclear saturation parameters and the maximum sound velocity in the core. It is shown that, for smaller values of the sound velocity in the core, the maximum mass limit of the scalarized neutron stars is larger than that of in general relativity. However, for stiff equations of state with sound velocity higher than $79\%$ of the velocity of light, the maximum mass limit in general relativity is la…
It has been suggested in the literature that the sound velocity of the nuclear matter $v_s$ violates the so-called sound velocity bound $v_s \le c/\sqrt{3}$ at high density, where $c$ is the speed of light. In this paper, we revisit this issue and confront the current measurements of mass, radius, and tidal deformability of neutron stars with $10^5$ different equations of state which are parametrized at low density and saturates the sound velocity bound beyond twice the saturation density where the equation of state has not been constrained yet, by which we can conservatively obtain the maximu…
Using more than a million randomly generated equations of state that satisfy theoretical and observational constraints we construct a novel, scale-independent description of the sound speed in neutron stars where the latter is expressed in a unit-cube spanning the normalised radius, $r/R$, and the mass normalized to the maximum one, $M/M_{\rm TOV}$. From this generic representation, a number of interesting and surprising results can be deduced. In particular, we find that light (heavy) stars have stiff (soft) cores and soft (stiff) outer layers, respectively, or that the maximum of the sound s…
The upper bound of the speed of sound in dense nuclear matter is one of the most interesting but still unsolved problems in Nuclear Physics. Theoretical studies in connection with recent observational data of isolated neutron stars as well as binary neutron stars systems offer an excellent opportunity to shed light on this problem. In the present work, we suggest a method to directly relate the measured tidal deformability (polarizability) of binary neutron stars system (before merger) to the maximum neutron star mass scenario and possible upper bound on the speed of sound. This method is base…
Information on the phase structure of strongly interacting matter at high baryon densities can be gained from observations of neutron stars and their detailed analysis. In the present work Bayesian inference methods are used to set constraints on the speed of sound in the interior of neutron stars, based on recent multi-messenger data in combination with limiting conditions from nuclear physics at low densities. Two general parametric representations are introduced for the sound speed $c_s$ in order to examine the independence with respect to choices for the parametrisation of Priors. Credible…
The observation of maximally rotating neutron stars (in comparison to nonrotating ones) may provide more information on the behavior of nuclear matter at high densities. We provide a theoretical treatment concerning the effects of the upper bound of the sound speed in dense matter on the bulk properties of maximally rotating (at mass-shedding limit) neutron stars. In particular, we consider two upper bounds for the speed of sound, $v_s = c$ and $v_s = c/\sqrt{3}$, and the one provided by the relativistic kinetic theory. We investigate to what extent the possible predicted (from various theorie…
We consider sound waves in superfluid nucleon-hyperon matter of massive neutron-star cores. We calculate and analyze the speeds of sound modes and their damping times due to the shear viscosity and non-equilibrium weak processes of particle transformations. For that, we employ the dissipative relativistic hydrodynamics of a superfluid nucleon-hyperon mixture, formulated recently [M.E. Gusakov and E.M. Kantor, Phys. Rev. D78, 083006 (2008)]. We demonstrate that the damping times of sound modes calculated using this hydrodynamics and the ordinary (nonsuperfluid) one, can differ from each other b…
We study the density distribution of the minimally-coupled scalar field dark energy inside a neutron star. The dark energy is considered in the hydrodynamical representation as a perfect fluid with three parameters (background density, equation of state, and effective sound speed). The neutron star matter is modeled with three unified equations of state, developed by the Brussels-Montreal group. With the calculated density distribution of the dark energy inside a neutron star (and its dependence on the dark energy parameters) we investigate how its presence impacts the macroscopic characterist…
The accurate determination of the maximum mass of the neutron stars is one of the most important tasks in astrophysics. It is directly related to the identification of the black holes in the universe, the production of neutron stars from the supernovae explosion, and the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter. However, not only the EoS is directly connected with neutron star masses, but also the speed of sound in dense matter is a crucial quantity which characterizes the stiffness of the EoS. The upper bound of the speed of sound imposes strong constraints on the maximum mass of neutron stars…
Determining the sound speed $c_s$ in compact stars is an important open question with numerous implications on the behaviour of matter at large densities and hence on gravitational-wave emission from neutron stars. To this scope, we construct more than $10^7$ equations of state (EOSs) with continuous sound speed and build more than $10^8$ nonrotating stellar models consistent not only with nuclear theory and perturbative QCD, but also with astronomical observations. In this way, we find that EOSs with sub-conformal sound speeds, i.e. with $c^2_s < 1/3$ within the stars, are possible in princip…
The exterior geometry of a neutron star can be approximated by relativistic multipole moments of a parametrized metric using Ernst potential formalism. This spacetime can be tested with electromagnetic wave observation of astrophysical black holes. In the present paper, I simulate X-ray reflection spectra of a thin accretion disk with future X-ray missions. The purpose of this work is to understand whether X-ray reflection spectroscopy can distinguish the neutron star from the Kerr solution of General Relativity. I found that for the higher value of spin and multipole moment parameters, there …
Neutron stars are cosmic laboratories to study dense matter in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The observable mass-radius relations of neutron stars are determined by QCD equations of state, and can reflect the properties of QCD phase transitions. In the last decade there have been historical discoveries in neutron stars, the discoveries of two-solar mass neutron stars and neutron star merger events, which have imposed tight constraints on equations of state. While a number of equations of state are constructed to satisfy these constraints, a theoretical challenge is how to reconcile those const…
Speed of sound is given attention in multi-messenger astronomy as it encodes information of the dense matter equation of state. Recently the trace anomaly was proposed as a more informative quantity. In this work, we statistically determine the speed of sound and trace anomaly and show that they are driven to their conformal values at the centers of maximally massive neutron stars. We show that the local peak in the speed of sound can be associated with deconfinement along with percolation conditions in QCD matter.
The NASA telescope NICER has recently measured x-ray emissions from the heaviest of the precisely known two-solar mass neutron stars, PSR J0740+6620. Analysis of the data [Miller et al., Astrophys. J. Lett. 918, L28 (2021); Riley et al., Astrophys. J. Lett. 918, L27 (2021)] suggests that PSR J0740+6620 has a radius in the range of $R_{2.0} \approx (11.4-16.1)$ km at the $68\%$ credibility level. In this article, we study the implications of this analysis for the sound speed in the high-density inner cores by using recent chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) calculations of the equation of st…
In this work we show the results for numerical solutions of the relativistic Grad-Shafranov equation for a typical neutron star with 1.4 solar masses. We have studied the internal magnetic field considering both the poloidal and toroidal components, as well as the behavior of the field lines parametrized by the ratio between these components of the field.
We discuss an interpretation that a peak in the sound velocity in neutron star matter, as suggested by the observational data, signifies strongly-coupled conformal matter. The normalized trace anomaly is a dimensionless measure of conformality leading to the derivative and the non-derivative contributions to the sound velocity. We find that the peak in the sound velocity is attributed to the derivative contribution from the trace anomaly that steeply approaches the conformal limit. Smooth continuity to the behavior of high-density QCD implies that the matter part of the trace anomaly may be po…
We investigate the impact of chemical equilibration and the resulting bulk viscosity on non-radial oscillation modes of warm neutron stars at temperatures up to $T\approx 5$ MeV, relevant for protoneutron stars and neutron-star post-merger remnants. In this regime, the relaxation rate of weak interactions becomes comparable to the characteristic frequencies of composition $g$-modes in the core, resulting in resonant damping. To capture this effect, we introduce the dynamical sound speed, a complex, frequency-dependent generalization of the adiabatic sound speed that encodes both the restoring …
The speed of sound of the matter within neutron stars may contain non-smooth structure related to first-order phase transitions or or crossovers. Here we investigate what are the observable consequences of structure, such as bumps, spikes, step functions, plateaus, and kinks. One of the main consequences is the possibility of ultra-heavy neutron stars, i.e.~stars with masses significantly heavier than two solar masses. These stars pass all observational and theoretical constraints, including those imposed by recent LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave observations and NICER X-ray observations. We tho…
In order to systematically examine the possible maximum mass of neutron stars, which is one of the important properties characterizing the physics in high-density region, I construct neutron star models by adopting phenomenological equations of state with various values of nuclear saturation parameters for low-density region, which are connected to the equation of state for high-density region characterized by the possible maximum sound velocity in medium. I derive an empirical formula for the possible maximum mass of neutron star. If massive neutron stars are observed, it could be possible to…
A principal goal of gravitational-wave astronomy is to constrain the neutron star equation of state (EOS) by measuring the tidal deformability of neutron stars. The tidally induced departure of the waveform from that of point-particle (or spinless binary black hole (BBH)) increases with the stiffness of the EOS. We show that causality (the requirement that the speed of sound is less than the speed of light for a perfect fluid satisfying a one-parameter equation of state) places an upper bound on tidal deformability as a function of mass. Like the upper mass limit, the limit on deformabity is o…

We obtain the equation of state (EoS) for two-color QCD at low temperature and high density from the lattice Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the velocity of sound exceeds the relativistic limit ($c_s^2/c^2=1/3$) after BEC-BCS crossover in the superfluid phase. Such an excess of the sound velocity is previously unknown from any lattice calculations for QCD-like theories. This finding might have a possible relevance to the EoS of neutron star matter revealed by recent measurements of neutron star masses and radii.

Certain bulk properties of neutron stars, in particular their moment of inertia, rotational quadrupole moment and tidal Love number, when properly normalized, are related to one another in a nearly equation of state independent way. The goal of this paper is to test these relations with extreme equations of state at supranuclear densities constrained to satisfy only a handful of generic, physically sensible conditions. By requiring that the equation of state be (i) barotropic and (ii) its associated speed of sound be real, we construct a piecewise function that matches a tabulated equation of …
The observation of gravitational waves from an asymmetric binary opens the possibility for heavy neutron stars, but these pose challenges to models of the neutron star equation of state. We construct heavy neutron stars by introducing non-trivial structure in the speed of sound sourced by deconfined QCD matter, which cannot be well recovered by spectral representations. Their moment of inertia, Love number and quadrupole moment are very small, so a tenfold increase in sensitivity may be needed to test this possibility with gravitational waves, which is feasible with third generation detectors.
In this work we study how the small contribution of the inner crust to the total equation of state (EoS) of a neutron star affects its mass-radius relation, focusing on the canonical mass of 1.4$M_\odot$. We build empirical EoS of the kind - $p = Kε^γ + b$ - in the range of 0.003 fm$^{-3}~<~n~<~$0.08 fm$^{-3}$ and also calculate the speed of sound in this region. We see that different behaviours of the speed of sound can affect the radius of the canonical star by more than 1.1 km. This result can help us understand extreme results as GW170817, where some studies indicate that the radius of the…

Binary neutron star mergers provide a unique probe of the dense-matter equation of state (EoS) across a wide range of parameter space, from the zero-temperature EoS during the inspiral to the high-temperature EoS following the merger. In this paper, we implement a new model for calculating parametrized finite-temperature EoS effects into numerical relativity simulations. This "M* model" is based on a two-parameter approximation of the particle effective mass and includes the leading-order effects of degeneracy in the thermal pressure and energy. We test our numerical implementation by performi…
The late inspiral, merger, and ringdown of a black hole-neutron star (BHNS) system can provide information about the neutron-star equation of state (EOS). Candidate EOSs can be approximated by a parametrized piecewise-polytropic EOS above nuclear density, matched to a fixed low-density EOS; and we report results from a large set of BHNS inspiral simulations that systematically vary two parameters. To within the accuracy of the simulations, we find that, apart from the neutron-star mass, a single physical parameter Lambda, describing its deformability, can be extracted from the late inspiral, m…
Generating an ensemble of equations of state that fulfill multimessenger constraints, we statistically determine the properties of dense matter found inside neutron stars (NSs). We calculate the speed of sound and trace anomaly and demonstrate that they are driven towards their conformal values at the center of maximally massive NSs. The local peak of the speed of sound is shown to be located at values of the energy and particle densities which are consistent with deconfinement and percolation conditions in QCD matter. We also analyze fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in the contex…
On August 14, 2019, the LIGO/Virgo collaboration observed a compact object with mass $\sim 2.59_{-0.09}^{+0.08}~M_{\odot}$, as a component of a system where the main companion was a black hole with mass $\sim 23~M_{\odot}$. A scientific debate initiated concerning the identification of the low mass component, as it falls into the neutron star - black hole mass gap. The understanding of the nature of GW190814 event will offer rich information concerning open issues, the speed of sound and the possible phase transition into other degrees of freedom. In the present work, we made an effort to prob…
We present the argument that "pseudo-conformal" symmetry permeates from low density near nuclear matter to high density in the core of massive neutron stars. As a support of this argument, we describe how the quenched $g_A\approx 1$ in nuclei and the sound speed $v_s^2/c^2\approx 1/3$ in compact stars are controlled by emerging scale invariance in nuclear interactions. In our description, quasi-baryons could "masquerade" de-confined quarks in the interior of compact stars.
We review how the "cusp" predicted in the nuclear symmetry energy generated by a topology change at density $n_{1/2}\gsim 2 n_0$ can have a surprising consequence, so far unrecognized in nuclear physics and astrophysics communities, on the structure of dense compact-star matter. The topology change, when translated into nuclear EFT with "effective" QCD degrees of freedom in terms of hidden local and scale symmetries duly taken into account, predicts an EoS that is soft below and stiff above $n\gsim n_{1/2}$, involving no low-order phase transitions, and yields the macrophysical properties of n…
The general behavior of the nuclear equation of state (EOS), relevant for the description of neutron stars (NS), is studied within a Bayesian approach applied to a set of models based on a density dependent relativistic mean field description of nuclear matter. The EOS is subjected to a minimal number of constraints based on nuclear saturation properties and the low density pure neutron matter EOS obtained from a precise next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^{3}$LO) calculation in chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT). The posterior distributions of the model parameters obtained under the…
The special point is a feature unique to models of hybrid neutron stars. It represents a location on their mass--radius sequences that is insensitive to the phase transition density. We consider hybrid neutron stars with a core of deconfined quark matter that obeys a constant--sound--speed (CSS) equation of state model and provide a fit formula for the coordinates of the special point as functions of the squared sound speed ($c_s^2$) and pressure scale ($A$) parameters. Using the special point mass as a proxy for the maximum mass of the hybrid stars we derive limits for the CSS model parameter…
