Neutron stars are cosmic laboratories to study dense matter in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The observable mass-radius relations of neutron stars are determined by QCD equations of state, and can reflect the properties of QCD phase transitions. In the last decade there have been historical discoveries in neutron stars, the discoveries of two-solar mass neutron stars and neutron star merger events, which have imposed tight constraints on equations of state. While a number of equations of state are constructed to satisfy these constraints, a theoretical challenge is how to reconcile those constructions with the microphysics expected from the hadron physics and in-medium calculations. In this short article we briefly go over recent observations and discuss their implications for dense QCD matter, referring to QCD constraints in the low and high density limits, QCD-like theories, and lattice QCD results for baryon-baryon interactions.
The speed of sound in QCD matter at finite temperature and density is investigated within the Polyakov loop improved Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. The spinodal structure associated with the chiral first-order chiral phase transition is considered to describe the continuous variation of the speed of sound. The behaviors of the squared sound speed in different phases, including the stable, metastable and unstable phases, are derived. The relation between speed of sound and QCD phase transitions is systematically explored. In particular, the boundary of vanishing sound velocity is derived in …
We have used second order relativistic hydrodynamics equipped with equation of state which includes the critical point to study the propagation of perturbation in a relativistic QCD fluid. Dispersion relation for the sound wave has been derived to ascertain the fate of the perturbation in the fluid near the QCD critical end point (CEP). We observe that the threshold value of the wavelength of the sound in the fluid diverges at the CEP, implying that all the modes of the perturbations are dissipated at this point. Some consequences of the suppression of sound near the critical point have been d…
We obtain the equation of state (EoS) for two-color QCD at low temperature and high density from the lattice Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the velocity of sound exceeds the relativistic limit ($c_s^2/c^2=1/3$) after BEC-BCS crossover in the superfluid phase. Such an excess of the sound velocity is previously unknown from any lattice calculations for QCD-like theories. This finding might have a possible relevance to the EoS of neutron star matter revealed by recent measurements of neutron star masses and radii.
QCD and nuclear physics. How to explain the coincidence between the action radius of nuclear forces and the characteristic scale of the neutron-neutron electrostatic interaction?
The historic first detection of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration has set a limit on the gravitational deformability of neutron stars. In contrast, radio observations of PSR J0740+6620 find a very massive neutron star. Tension between the small deformability and the large maximum mass may suggest that the pressure rises rapidly with density and thus the speed of sound in dense matter is likely a large fraction of the speed of light. We use these observations and simple constant sound-speed model equations of state to set a lower bound on the maximum speed …
It has been suggested in the literature that the sound velocity of the nuclear matter $v_s$ violates the so-called sound velocity bound $v_s \le c/\sqrt{3}$ at high density, where $c$ is the speed of light. In this paper, we revisit this issue and confront the current measurements of mass, radius, and tidal deformability of neutron stars with $10^5$ different equations of state which are parametrized at low density and saturates the sound velocity bound beyond twice the saturation density where the equation of state has not been constrained yet, by which we can conservatively obtain the maximu…
The effects of the presence of hyperons and a phase transition to deconfined quark matter on the speed of sound in neutron stars is investigated. For this purpose a composite description consisting of a model of the covariant field theory of hadrons and one for unbound quarks are used. A phase transition with continuous and monotonous variation of the equation of state is assumed. The predictions are contrasted with recent observational data on isolated neutron stars as well as on binary systems. Only one candidate is finally obtained from six different descriptions. According to the present c…
Information on the phase structure of strongly interacting matter at high baryon densities can be gained from observations of neutron stars and their detailed analysis. In the present work Bayesian inference methods are used to set constraints on the speed of sound in the interior of neutron stars, based on recent multi-messenger data in combination with limiting conditions from nuclear physics at low densities. Two general parametric representations are introduced for the sound speed $c_s$ in order to examine the independence with respect to choices for the parametrisation of Priors. Credible…
We delineate the properties of QCD matter at baryon density n_B=1-10n_0 (n_0: nuclear saturation density), through the construction of neutron star equations of state that satisfy the neutron star mass-radius constraints as well as physical conditions on the speed of sound. The QCD matter is described in the 3-window modeling: at n_B < 2n_0 purely nuclear matter; at n_B > 5n_0 percolated quark matter; and at 2n_0 < n_B < 5n_0 matter intermediate between these two which are constructed by interpolation. Using a schematic quark model with effective interactions inspired from hadron and nuclear p…
I discuss why state-of-the art perturbative QCD calculations of the equation of state at large chemical potential that are reliable at asymptotically high densities constrain the same equation of state at neutron-star densities. I describe how these theoretical calculations affect the EOS at lower density. I argue that the ab-initio calculations in QCD offer significant information about the equation of state of the neutron-star matter, which is complementary to the current astrophysical observations.
In this contribution, I discuss the utility that perturbative QCD offers in studying the matter in the cores of neutron stars. I discuss the reasons why perturbative QCD can constrain the equation of state at densities far below the densities where we can perform controlled calculations. I discuss how perturbative QCD can inform nuclear modelling of neutron stars and how it influences equation-of-state inference. And finally, I discuss the implications to the QCD phase diagram and argue that interesting features in the equation of state revealed by the QCD input may be used to argue for the ex…
A unified chiral mean field approach is presented for QCD thermodynamics in a wide range of temperatures and densities. The model simultaneously gives a satisfactory description of lattice QCD thermodynamics and fulfills nuclear matter and astrophysical constraints. The resulting equation of state can be incorporated in relativistic fluid-dynamical simulations of heavy-ion collisions and neutron stars mergers. Access to different regions of the QCD phase diagram can be obtained in simulations of heavy-ion data and observations of neutron star mergers.
The accurate determination of the maximum mass of the neutron stars is one of the most important tasks in astrophysics. It is directly related to the identification of the black holes in the universe, the production of neutron stars from the supernovae explosion, and the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter. However, not only the EoS is directly connected with neutron star masses, but also the speed of sound in dense matter is a crucial quantity which characterizes the stiffness of the EoS. The upper bound of the speed of sound imposes strong constraints on the maximum mass of neutron stars…
Using more than a million randomly generated equations of state that satisfy theoretical and observational constraints we construct a novel, scale-independent description of the sound speed in neutron stars where the latter is expressed in a unit-cube spanning the normalised radius, $r/R$, and the mass normalized to the maximum one, $M/M_{\rm TOV}$. From this generic representation, a number of interesting and surprising results can be deduced. In particular, we find that light (heavy) stars have stiff (soft) cores and soft (stiff) outer layers, respectively, or that the maximum of the sound s…
We discuss an interpretation that a peak in the sound velocity in neutron star matter, as suggested by the observational data, signifies strongly-coupled conformal matter. The normalized trace anomaly is a dimensionless measure of conformality leading to the derivative and the non-derivative contributions to the sound velocity. We find that the peak in the sound velocity is attributed to the derivative contribution from the trace anomaly that steeply approaches the conformal limit. Smooth continuity to the behavior of high-density QCD implies that the matter part of the trace anomaly may be po…
We obtain the equation of state (EoS) and the sound velocity for 2-color QCD at low temperature and high density and find that in the superfluid phase, $c_s^2/c^2 >1/3$, where $1/3$ is the value at the relativistic limit. Several independent Monte Carlo studies on 2-color QCD have been conducted intensively in recent years. These works have shown a clear evidence of phase transition between hadronic and superfluid phases. In our paper[1], we have investigated the EoS and sound velocity in both phases. Our result is consistent with chiral perturbation theory in a low $μ$ regime of the superflui…
The upper bound of the speed of sound in dense nuclear matter is one of the most interesting but still unsolved problems in Nuclear Physics. Theoretical studies in connection with recent observational data of isolated neutron stars as well as binary neutron stars systems offer an excellent opportunity to shed light on this problem. In the present work, we suggest a method to directly relate the measured tidal deformability (polarizability) of binary neutron stars system (before merger) to the maximum neutron star mass scenario and possible upper bound on the speed of sound. This method is base…
Determining the sound speed $c_s$ in compact stars is an important open question with numerous implications on the behaviour of matter at large densities and hence on gravitational-wave emission from neutron stars. To this scope, we construct more than $10^7$ equations of state (EOSs) with continuous sound speed and build more than $10^8$ nonrotating stellar models consistent not only with nuclear theory and perturbative QCD, but also with astronomical observations. In this way, we find that EOSs with sub-conformal sound speeds, i.e. with $c^2_s < 1/3$ within the stars, are possible in princip…
We study the stability against infinitesimal radial oscillations of neutron stars generated by a set of equations of state obtained from first-principle calculations in cold and dense QCD and constrained by observational data. We consider mild and large violations of the conformal bound, $c_{s} = 1/\sqrt{3}$, in stars that can possibly contain a quark matter core. Some neutron star families in the mass-radius diagram become dynamically unstable due to large oscillation amplitudes near the core.
We briefly discuss the current status of lattice QCD simulations and review selective results on nucleon observables focusing on recent developments in the lattice QCD evaluation of the nucleon form factors and radii, parton distribution functions and their moments, and the neutron electric dipole moment. Nucleon charges and moments of parton distribution functions are presented using simulations generated at physical values of the quark masses, while exploratory studies are performed for the parton distribution functions and the neutron electric dipole moment at heavier than physical value of…
Speed of sound is given attention in multi-messenger astronomy as it encodes information of the dense matter equation of state. Recently the trace anomaly was proposed as a more informative quantity. In this work, we statistically determine the speed of sound and trace anomaly and show that they are driven to their conformal values at the centers of maximally massive neutron stars. We show that the local peak in the speed of sound can be associated with deconfinement along with percolation conditions in QCD matter.
Equation of state (EOS) of pure neutron matter (PNM) is studied in QCD sum rules (QCDSR). It is found that the QCDSR results on EOS of PNM are in good agreement with predictions by current advanced microscopic many-body theories. Moreover, the higher-order density terms in quark condensates are shown to be important to describe the empirical EOS of PNM in the density region around and above nuclear saturation density although they play minor role at subsaturation densities. The chiral condensates in PNM are also studied, and our results indicate that the higher-order density terms in quark con…
The NASA telescope NICER has recently measured x-ray emissions from the heaviest of the precisely known two-solar mass neutron stars, PSR J0740+6620. Analysis of the data [Miller et al., Astrophys. J. Lett. 918, L28 (2021); Riley et al., Astrophys. J. Lett. 918, L27 (2021)] suggests that PSR J0740+6620 has a radius in the range of $R_{2.0} \approx (11.4-16.1)$ km at the $68\%$ credibility level. In this article, we study the implications of this analysis for the sound speed in the high-density inner cores by using recent chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) calculations of the equation of st…
Several observations of high-mass neutron stars (NSs), as well as the first historic detection of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, have delivered stringent constraints on the equation of state (EoS) of cold and dense matter. Recent studies suggest that, in order to simultaneously accommodate a $2M_\odot$ NS and the upper limit on the compactness, the pressure has to swiftly increase with density and the corresponding speed of sound likely exceeds the conformal limit. In this work, we employ a unified description of hadron-quark matter, the hybrid quark-meson-nucleon (QMN) model, to inv…
The determination of the properties of neutron stars from the underlying theory, QCD, is still an unsolved problem. This is mainly due to the difficulty to obtain reliable results for the equation of state for cold, dense QCD. As an alternative route to obtain qualitative insights, we determine the structure of a neutron star for a modified version of QCD: By replacing the gauge group SU(3) with the exceptional Lie group G2, it is possible to perform lattice simulations at finite density, while still retaining neutrons. Here, results of these lattice simulations are used to determine the mass-…
Determining the phase structure of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and its Equation of State (EOS) at densities and temperatures realized inside neutron stars and their mergers is a long-standing open problem. The holographic V-QCD framework provides a model for the EOS of dense and hot QCD, which describes the deconfinement phase transition between a dense baryonic and a quark matter phase. We use this model in fully general relativistic hydrodynamic (GRHD) simulations to study the formation of quark matter and the emitted gravitational wave signal of binary systems that are similar to the first…
The observation of maximally rotating neutron stars (in comparison to nonrotating ones) may provide more information on the behavior of nuclear matter at high densities. We provide a theoretical treatment concerning the effects of the upper bound of the sound speed in dense matter on the bulk properties of maximally rotating (at mass-shedding limit) neutron stars. In particular, we consider two upper bounds for the speed of sound, $v_s = c$ and $v_s = c/\sqrt{3}$, and the one provided by the relativistic kinetic theory. We investigate to what extent the possible predicted (from various theorie…
Abstract (abridged edition): Properties of the relativistic nucleon self-energy decomposition of the symmetry energy as well as the equation of state (EOS) of pure neutron matter (PNM) are explored systematically within the QCD sum rules (QCDSR). Our results in the present work have demonstrated that the QCDSR approach can be used to explore the properties of asymmetric nuclear matter (ANM) in a quantitative manner, at least in lower density region. The QCDSR approach establishes a bridge connecting the EOS of ANM and the non-perturbative QCD vacuum, and thus provides a useful way to understan…
