On August 14, 2019, the LIGO/Virgo collaboration observed a compact object with mass $\sim 2.59_{-0.09}^{+0.08}~M_{\odot}$, as a component of a system where the main companion was a black hole with mass $\sim 23~M_{\odot}$. A scientific debate initiated concerning the identification of the low mass component, as it falls into the neutron star - black hole mass gap. The understanding of the nature of GW190814 event will offer rich information concerning open issues, the speed of sound and the possible phase transition into other degrees of freedom. In the present work, we made an effort to probe the nuclear equation of state along with the GW190814 event. Firstly, we examine possible constraints on the nuclear equation of state inferred from the consideration that the low mass companion is a slow or rapidly rotating neutron star. In this case, the role of the upper bounds on the speed of sound is revealed, in connection with the dense nuclear matter properties. Secondly, we systematically study the tidal deformability of a possible high mass candidate existing as an individual star or as a component one in a binary neutron star system. As the tidal deformability and radius are quantities very sensitive on the neutron star equation of state, they are excellent counters on dense matter properties. We conjecture that similar isolated neutron stars or systems may exist in the Universe and their possible future observation will shed light on the maximum neutron star mass problem.
We study the prospects of future gravitational wave (GW) detectors in probing primordial black hole (PBH) binaries. We show that across a broad mass range from $10^{-5}M_\odot$ to $10^7M_\odot$, future GW interferometers provide a potential probe of the PBH abundance that is more sensitive than any currently existing experiment. In particular, we find that galactic PBH binaries with masses as low as $10^{-5}M_\odot$ may be probed with ET, AEDGE and LISA by searching for nearly monochromatic continuous GW signals. Such searches could independently test the PBH interpretation of the ultrashort m…
We present extensive optical/ultraviolet observations and modelling analysis for the nearby SN 1987A-like peculiar Type II supernova (SN) 2018hna. Both photometry and spectroscopy covered phases extending to $>$500 days after the explosion, making it one of the best-observed SN II of this subtype. SN 2018hna is obviously bluer than SN 1987A during the photospheric phase, suggesting higher photospheric temperature, which may account for weaker BaII $\mathrmλ$6142 lines in its spectra. Analysis of early-time temperature evolution suggests a radius of $\sim$45 $\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$ for the progeni…
We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the superluminous SN 2002gh from maximum light to $+204$ days, obtained as part of the Carnegie Type II Supernova (CATS) project. SN 2002gh is among the most luminous discovered supernovae ever, yet it remained unnoticed for nearly two decades. Using Dark Energy Camera archival images we identify the potential SN host galaxy as a faint dwarf galaxy, presumably having low metallicity, and in an apparent merging process with other nearby dwarf galaxies. We show that SN 2002gh is among the brightest hydrogen-poor SLSNe with $M_{V} = -22.40 \pm 0.0…
Inspirals and mergers of black hole (BHs) and/or neutron star (NSs) binaries are expected to be abundant sources for ground-based gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. We assess the capabilities of Advanced LIGO and Virgo to measure component masses using inspiral waveform models including spin-precession effects using a large ensemble of GW sources {\bf randomly oriented and distributed uniformly in volume. For 1000 sources this yields signal-to-noise ratios between 7 and 200}. We make quantitative predictions for how well LIGO and Virgo will distinguish between BHs and NSs and appraise the pros…
We aim at contributing to the resolution of three of the fundamental puzzles related to the still unsolved problem of the structure of the dense core of compact stars (CS): (i) the hyperon puzzle: how to reconcile pulsar masses of $2\,$M$_\odot$ with the hyperon softening of the equation of state (EoS); (ii) the masquerade problem: modern EoS for cold, high density hadronic and quark matter are almost identical; and (iii) the reconfinement puzzle: what to do when after a deconfinement transition the hadronic EoS becomes favorable again? We show that taking into account the compositeness of bar…
The peculiar emission properties of the $z \sim 6.6$ Ly$α$ emitter CR7 have been initially interpreted with the presence of either a direct collapse black hole (DCBH) or a substantial mass of Pop III stars. Instead, updated photometric observations by Bowler et al. (2016) seem to suggest that CR7 is a more standard system. Here we confirm that the original DCBH hypothesis is consistent also with the new data. Using radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, we reproduce the new IR photometry with two models involving a Compton-thick DCBH of mass $\approx 7 \times 10^6 \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ accreting…
ESA and NASA are moving forward with plans to launch LISA around 2034. With data from the Illustris cosmological simulation, we provide analysis of LISA detection rates accompanied by characterization of the merging massive black hole population. Massive black holes of total mass $\sim10^5-10^{10} M_\odot$ are the focus of this study. We evolve Illustris massive black hole mergers, which form at separations on the order of the simulation resolution ($\sim$kpc scales), through coalescence with two different treatments for the binary massive black hole evolutionary process. The coalescence times…
Physical parameters of both the mass donor and compact object can be constrained in X-ray binaries with well-defined eclipses, as our survey of wind-fed supergiant X-ray binaries (SGXBs) IGR J16393-4643, IGR J16418-4532, IGR J16479-4514, IGR J18027-2016 and XTE J1855-026 reveals. Using the orbital period and Kepler's third law, we express the eclipse half-angle in terms of radius, inclination angle and the sum of the masses. Pulse-timing and radial velocity curves can give masses of both the donor and compact object as in the case of the "double-lined" binaries IGR J18027-2016 and XTE J1855-02…
Gravitational waves can probe the existence of planetary-mass primordial black holes. Considering a mass range of $[10^{-7}-10^{-2}]M_\odot$, inspiraling primordial black holes could emit either continuous gravitational waves, quasi-monochromatic signals that last for many years, or transient continuous waves, signals whose frequency evolution follows a power law and last for $\mathcal{O}$(hours-months). We show that primordial black hole binaries in our galaxy may produce detectable gravitational waves for different mass functions and formation mechanisms. In order to detect these inspirals, …
Gaseous halos play a key role for understanding inflow, feedback and the overall baryon budget in galaxies. Literature models predict transitions of the state of the gaseous halo between cold and hot accretion, winds, fountains and hydrostatic halos at certain galaxy masses. Since luminosities of radio AGN are sensitive to halo densities, any significant transition would be expected to show up in the radio luminosities of large samples of galaxies. The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) has indeed identified a galaxy stellar mass scale, $10^{11} M_\odot$ , above which the…
In this work I briefly review some of the effects of hyperons on the properties of neutron and proto-neutron stars. In particular, I revise the problem of the strong softening of the EoS, and the consequent reduction of the maximum mass, induced by the presence of hyperons, a puzzle which has become more intringuing and difficult to solve due the recent measurements of the unusually high masses of the millisecond pulsars PSR J1903+0327 ($1.667\pm 0.021 M_\odot$), PSR J1614-2230 ($1.97 \pm 0.04 M_\odot$), and PSR J0348+0432 ($2.01 \pm 0.04 M_\odot$). Some of the solutions proposed to tackle thi…
The detection of an unexpected $\sim 2.5 M_{\odot}$ component in the gravitational wave event GW190814 has puzzled the community of High-Energy astrophysicists, since in the absence of further information it is not clear whether this is the heaviest "neutron star" ever detected or either the lightest black hole known, of a kind absent in the local neighbourhood. We show in this work a few possibilities for a model of the former, in the framework of three different quark matter models with and without anisotropy in the interior pressure. As representatives of classes of "exotic" solutions, we s…
GW190521 was the most massive black hole merger discovered by LIGO/Virgo so far, with masses in tension with stellar evolution models. A possible explanation of such heavy black holes is that they themselves are the remnants of previous mergers of lighter black holes. Here we estimate the masses of the ancestral black holes of GW190521, assuming it is the end product of previous mergers. We find that the heaviest parental black holes has a mass of $62^{+21}_{-19}$ M$_\odot$ (90% credible level). We find 78% probability that it is in the $50$ M$_\odot-120$ M$_\odot$ mass gap, indicating that it…
By probing the population of binary black hole (BBH) mergers detected by LIGO-Virgo, we can infer properties about the underlying black hole formation channels. A mechanism known as pair-instability (PI) supernova is expected to prevent the formation of black holes from stellar collapse with mass greater than $\sim 40-65\,M_\odot$ and less than $\sim 120\,M_\odot$. Any BBH merger detected by LIGO-Virgo with a component black hole in this gap, known as the PI mass gap, likely originated from an alternative formation channel. Here, we firmly establish GW190521 as an outlier to the stellar-mass B…
Massive stars shape their surroundings with mass loss from winds during their lifetimes. Fast ejecta from supernovae, from these massive stars, shocks this circumstellar medium. Emission generated by this interaction provides a window into the final stages of stellar evolution, by probing the history of mass loss from the progenitor. Here we use Chandra and Swift x-ray observations of the type II-P/L SN 2013ej to probe the history of mass loss from its progenitor. We model the observed x-rays as emission from both heated circumstellar matter and supernova ejecta. The circumstellar density prof…
We presented a detailed analysis of progenitor properties of type IIP supernova 2017eaw in NGC 6946, based on the pre-explosion images and early-time observations obtained immediately after the explosion. An unusually red star, with M$_{F814W}$ = $-$6.9 mag and m$_{F606W}$$-$ m$_{F814W}=$2.9$\pm$0.2 mag, can be identified at the SN position in the pre-discovery Hubble Space Telescope(HST) images taken in 2016. The observed spectral energy distribution of this star, covering the wavelength of 0.6-2.0$\ \mathrm{μm}$, matches that of an M4-type red supergiant (RSG) with a temperature of about 355…
Hyperon ($Y$) mixing in neutron-star matter brings about a remarkable softening of the equation of state (EoS) and the maximum mass is reduced to a value far less than $2M_{\odot}$. One idea to avoid this "hyperon puzzle in neutron stars" is to assume that the many-body repulsions work universally for every kind of baryons. The other is to take into account the quark deconfinement phase transitions from a hadronic EoS to a sufficiently stiff quark-matter EoS. In the present approach, both effects are handled in a common framework. As well as the hadronic matter, the quark matter with the two-b…
The existence of high mass ($\sim 2M_{\odot}$) pulsars PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 requires the compact star matter to be described by a stiff equation of state (EoS). Presence of hyperons in neutron stars leads to a softening of the EoS that results in a decrease of the maximum neutron-star mass below the measured values of masses for PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 pulsars if one exploits ordinary relativistic mean-field (RMF) models (hyperon puzzle). However, within an RMF EoS with a sigma-scaled hadron effective masses and coupling constants, the maximum neutron-star mass remains a…

We analyze triple systems composed of the super massive black hole (SMBH) near the center of M87 and a pair of black holes (BHs) with masses in the range $10-10^3$ $M_{\odot}$. We consider the post Newtonian precession as well as the Kozai-Lidov interactions at the quadruple and octupole levels in modeling the evolution of binary black hole (BBH) under the influence of the SMBH. Kozai-Lidov oscillations enhance the gravitational wave (GW) signal in some portions of the parameter space. We identify frequency peaks and examine the detectability of GWs with LISA as well as future observatories su…
Six gravitational wave events have been reported by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration (LVC), five of them associated with black hole binary (BHB) mergers and one with a double neutron star (DNS) merger, while the coalescence of a black hole-neutron star (BHNS) binary is still missing. We investigate the progenitors of double compact object binaries with our population-synthesis code MOBSE. MOBSE includes advanced prescriptions for mass loss by stellar winds (depending on metallicity and on the Eddington ratio) and a formalism for core-collapse, electron-capture and (pulsational) pair instability su…
