The special point is a feature unique to models of hybrid neutron stars. It represents a location on their mass--radius sequences that is insensitive to the phase transition density. We consider hybrid neutron stars with a core of deconfined quark matter that obeys a constant--sound--speed (CSS) equation of state model and provide a fit formula for the coordinates of the special point as functions of the squared sound speed ($c_s^2$) and pressure scale ($A$) parameters. Using the special point mass as a proxy for the maximum mass of the hybrid stars we derive limits for the CSS model parameters based on the recent NICER constraint on mass and radius of pulsar PSR J0740+6620, $0.36 < {c^2_s}_{\rm min} < 0.43$ and $80<A [{\rm MeV/fm}^3]<160$. The upper limit for the maximum mass of hybrid stars depends on the upper limit for $c_s^2$ so that choosing $c^2_{s,max} = 0.6$ results in $M_{\rm max}<2.7~M_\odot$, within the mass range of GW190814.
Within both dynamical and thermodynamical approaches using the equation of state for neutron-rich nuclear matter constrained by the recent isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion reactions in the same sub-saturation density range as the neutron star crust, the density and pressure at the inner edge separating the liquid core from the solid crust of neutron stars are determined to be 0.040 fm$^{-3}$ $\leq ρ_{t}\leq 0.065$ fm$^{-3}$ and 0.01 MeV/fm$^{3}$ $\leq P_{t}\leq 0.26$ MeV/fm$^{3}$, respectively. These together with the observed minimum crustal fraction of the total moment of inertia allow …
We present a systematic investigation of the possible locations for the special point (SP), a unique feature of hybrid neutron stars in the mass-radius. The study is performed within the two-phase approach where the high-density (quark matter) phase is described by the constant-sound-speed (CSS) equation of state (EoS) and the nuclear matter phase around saturation density is varied from very soft (APR) to stiff (DD2 with excluded nucleon volume. Different construction schemes for the deconfinement transition are applied: Maxwell construction, mixed phase construction and parabolic interpolati…

We model the cooling of hybrid neutron stars combining a microscopic nuclear equation of state in the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach with different quark models. We then analyze the neutron star cooling curves predicted by the different models and single out the preferred ones. We find that the possibility of neutron p-wave pairing can be excluded in our scenario.
We introduce a family of equations of state (EoS) for hybrid neutron star (NS) matter that is obtained by a two-zone parabolic interpolation between a soft hadronic EoS at low densities and a stiff quark matter EoS with color superconductivity at high densities within a finite region of baryonic chemical potentials $μ_B^h < μ_B < μ_B^q$. We consider two scenarios corresponding to a cross-over and a strong first-order transition between quark and hadron phases considered at finite and zero temperatures. This allows us to analyze the effects of finite entropy on the EoS and mass-radius relation …
The observation of $1.97\pm0.04$ solar-mass neutron-like star gives constraint on the equation of state (EOS) of cold, condensed matter. In this paper, the EOS for both pure quark star and hybrid star with a quark core described by quasi-particle model are considered. The parameters of quasi-particle model which affect the mass of both quark star and hybrid star can be constrained by the observation.
With the first multi-messenger observation of a binary neutron star merger (GW170817) new constraints became available for masses and radii of neutron stars. We introduce a class of hybrid EoS that fulfils all these constraints and predicts a region in the mass-radius diagram that could be populated only by hybrid neutron stars with quark matter cores. A confirmation of this conjecture would be provided when the NICER radius measurement for the high-mass pulsar PSR J0740+6620 yields a radius less than 11 km. Would this radius measurement yield a result in excess of 12 km, this would allow for …
Using a nonlocal extension of the SU(3) Nambu-Jona Lasinio model, which reproduces several of the key features of Quantum Chromodynamics, we show that mixed phases of deconfined quarks and confined hadrons (quark-hybrid matter) may exist in the cores of neutron stars as massive as around 2.1 M_Sun. The radii of these objects are found to be in the canonical range of $\sim 12-13$ km. According to our study, the transition to pure quark matter does not occur in stable neutron stars, but is shifted to neutron stars which are unstable against radial oscillations. The implications of our study for …
In this contribution, we describe new chemically-equilibrated charge-neutral hybrid equations of state for neutron stars. They present a first-order phase transition to quark matter and differentiate by the particle population considered and how these particles interact. While some equations of state contain just nucleons and up, down-quarks, others also contain hyperons, Delta baryons, and strange quarks. The hybrid equations of state, together with corresponding hadronic ones, are available on the CompOSE repository and can be used for different astrophysical applications.
We investigate the effects of including strong charge-parity (CP) violating effects through axion fields in the microscopic equation of state of massive hybrid neutron stars. We assume that their cores contain deconfined quark matter and include the effects of axions via an effective 't Hooft determinant interaction. The hadronic crusts are described using different approaches in order to make our results more general. We find that the presence of axions stabilizes massive hybrid neutron stars against gravitational collapse by weakening the deconfinement phase transition and bringing it to low…
We study a family of equations of state for hybrid neutron star matter. The hybrid EOS are obtained by a Maxwell construction of the first-order phase transition between a hadronic phase described by the relativistic density-functional EOS of the "DD2" class with excluded volume effects and a deconfined quark matter phase modeled by an instantaneous nonlocal version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in SU(2)$_f$ with vector interactions and color superconductivity. The form factor in the nonlocal quark matter model is fitted to lattice QCD results in the Coulomb gauge. Owing to strong coupling i…
We study the thermal evolution of neutron stars containing deconfined quark matter in their core. Such objects are generally referred to as quark-hybrid stars. The confined hadronic matter in their core is described in the framework of non-linear relativistic nuclear field theory. For the quark phase we use a non-local extension of the SU(3) Nambu Jona-Lasinio model with vector interactions. The Gibbs condition is used to model phase equilibrium between confined hadronic matter and deconfined quark matter. Our study indicates that high-mass neutron stars may contain between 35 and 40 % deconfi…
We construct a set of equations of state (EoS) of dense and hot matter with a 1st order phase transition from a hadronic system to a deconfined quark matter state. In this two-phase approach, hadrons are described using the relativistic mean field theory with different parametrisations and the deconfined quark phase is modeled using vBag, a bag-type model extended to include vector interactions as well as a simultaneous onset of chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement. This feature results in a non-trivial connection between the hadron and quark EoS, modifying the quark phase beyond its …

Recently, it has been shown that the standard Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is not able to reproduce the correct QCD behavior of the gap equation at large density, and therefore a different cutoff procedure at large momenta has ben proposed. We found that, even with this density dependent cutoff procedure, the pure quark phase in neutron stars (NS) interiors is unstable, and we argue that this could be related to the lack of confinement in the original NJL model.
We explore the possibility of formation of $Δ$ baryons (1232 MeV) in neutron star matter in an effective chiral model within the relativistic mean-field framework. With variation in delta-meson couplings, consistent with the constraints imposed on them, the resulting equation of state is obtained and the neutron star properties are calculated for static and spherical configuration. Within the framework of our model the critical densities of formation of $Δ$s and the properties of neutron stars are found to be very sensitive to the iso-vector coupling compared to the scalar or vector couplings.…
We derive the bulk viscous damping timescale of hybrid stars, neutron stars with quark matter core. The r-mode instability windows of the stars show that the theoretical results are consistent with the rapid rotation pulsar data, which may give an indication for the existence of quark matter in the interior of neutron stars. Hybrid stars instead of neutron or strange stars may lead to submillisecond pulsars.
We study the star matter properties for Hybrid equation of state (EoS) by varying the bag constant. We use the Effective-Field-Theory motivated Relativistic Mean-Field model (E-RMF) for hadron phase with recently reported FSUGarnet, G3 and IOPB-I parameter sets. The result of NL3 and NL3${ωρ}$ sets are also shown for comparison. The simple MIT Bag model is applied for the quark phase to construct the hybrid EoS. The hybrid neutron star mass and radius are calculated by varying with $B^{1/4}$ to constrain the $B^{1/4}$ values. It is found that $B^{1/4}$=130-160 MeV is suitable for explaining th…

We show that a hybrid (nuclear + quark matter) star can have a mass-radius relationship very similar to that predicted for a star made of purely nucleonic matter. We show this for a generic parameterization of the quark matter equation of state, and also for an MIT bag model, each including a phenomenological correction based on gluonic corrections to the equation of state. We obtain hybrid stars as heavy as 2 M_solar for reasonable values of the bag model parameters. For nuclear matter, we use the equation of state calculated by Akmal, Pandharipande, and Ravenhall using many-body techniques. …
Within the "nuclear medium cooling" scenario of neutron stars all reliably known temperature - age data, including those of the central compact objects in the supernova remnants of Cassiopeia A and XMMU-J1732, can be comfortably explained by a set of cooling curves obtained by variation of the star mass within the range of typical observed masses. The recent measurements of the high masses of the pulsars PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 on the one hand, and of the low masses for PSR J0737-3039B and the companion of PSR J1756-2251 on the other, provide independent proof for the existence of ne…
We describe charge-neutral neutron star matter in $β-$equilibrium using hybrid equations of state, where a first-order phase transition from hadronic to quark matter is realized. The hadronic matter is described in a model-independent way by a Taylor expansion around saturation density $n_0$, while the three-flavor NJL model is used for the quark matter. Exploring the present uncertainty on the empirical parameters of nuclear matter and the parameter space of the NJL model, we construct two datasets of thermodynamically consistent and causal hybrid EoSs, compatible with astrophysical observati…
A recent solution of the hyperon puzzle by a first order phase transition to color superconducting quark matter is revisited in order to replace the Maxwell construction by an interpolation method which describes a mixed phase. To do this, we apply for the first time the finite-range polynomial interpolation method for constructing a transition between hadronic and quark matter phases to the situation that is characterized in the literature as the reconfinement problem. For the description of the hadronic phase the lowest order constrained variational method is used while for the quark phase t…
We apply the recently developed Log N - Log S test of compact star cooling theories for the first time to hybrid stars with a color superconducting quark matter core. While there is not yet a microscopically founded superconducting quark matter phase which would fulfill constraints from cooling phenomenology, we explore the hypothetical 2SC+X phase and show that the magnitude and density-dependence of the X-gap can be chosen to satisfy a set of tests: temperature - age (T - t), the brightness constraint, Log N - Log S, and the mass spectrum constraint. The latter test appears as a new conjectu…
We study the possibility of a hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of neutron stars, taking into account different schematic evolutionary stages at finite temperature. Furthermore, we analyze the astrophysical properties of hot and cold hybrid stars, considering the constraint on maximum mass given by the pulsars J1614-2230 and J1614-2230. We obtain cold hybrid stars with maximum masses $\geq 2$ M$_{\odot}$. Our study also suggest that during the proto-hybrid star evolution a late phase transition between hadronic matter and quark matter could occur, in contrast with previous studies …
We study the consequences of superconducting quark cores (with color-flavor-locked phase as representative example) for evolution of temperature profiles and the cooling curves in quark-hadron hybrid stars and in hypothetical self-bounded objects having no a hadron shell (quark core neutron stars). The quark gaps are varied from 0 to $Δ_q =50$ MeV. For hybrid stars we find time scales of $1\div5$, $5\div10$ and $50\div100$ years for the formation of a quasistationary temperature distribution in the cases $Δ_q =0$, 0.1 MeV and $\gsim$ 1 MeV, respectively. These time scales are governed by the h…
Ab initio methods using weakly interacting nucleons give a good description of condensed nuclear matter up to densities comparable to the nuclear saturation density. At higher densities palpable strong interactions between overlapping nucleons become important; we propose that the interactions will continuously switch over to follow a holographic model in this region. In order to implement this, we construct hybrid equations of state (EoSs) where various models are used for low density nuclear matter, and the holographic V-QCD model is used for non-perturbative high density nuclear matter as w…
We study the properties of two-flavor quark matter in the Dyson-Schwinger model and investigate the possible consequences for hybrid neutron stars, with particular regard to the two-solar-mass limit. We find that with some extreme values of the model parameters, the mass fraction of two-flavor quark matter in heavy neutron stars can be as high as 30 percent and the possible energy release during the conversion from nucleonic neutron stars to hybrid stars can reach $10^{52}\;$erg.
The recent discovery of the two-solar mass neutron stars $J1614-2230~(1.97 \pm 0.04 M_{\odot})$ and $J0348+0432~(2.01 \pm 0.04 M_{\odot})$ allows to consider the possible existence of deconfined quarks in the cores of neutron stars. Based on a non-local extension of the $SU(3)$ Nambu Jona-Lasinio model with vector interactions to describe the quark matter phase, and a non-linear Walecka model to represent the hadronic phase, a phase transition between these two phases can be constructed via the Gibbs conditions and imposing global electric charge neutrality condition. Depending on the strength…
Neutron stars in low-mass binary systems are subject to accretion. The common assumption in studying the properties of the neutron star crust is the fully accreted crust approximation. However, observations of some X-ray transient sources indicate that the original crust has not been completely replaced by accreted material, but is partly composed of the compressed original crust. A two-part (or hybrid) crust made of the original crust that is compressed and of the accreted material crashing onto it was reconstructed as a function of the accretion stage. The differences in the composition and …
For the past 20 years it had been thought that the coexistence phase of the confined hadronic and quark matter phases, assumed to be a first order transition, was strictly excluded from neutron stars. This, however, was due to a seemingly innocuous idealization which has approximated away important physics. The reason is that neutron stars constitute multi-component bodies rather than single-component ones formerly (and incorrectly) used to describe the deconfinement phase transition in neutron stars. So, contrary to earlier claims, `neutron' stars may very well contain quark matter in their c…
We construct self-consistent equilibrium sequences of general relativistic, rotating neutron star models. Special emphasis in put on the determination of the maximum rotation frequency of such objects. Recently proposed models for the equation of state of neutron star matter are employed, which are derived by describing the hadronic phase within the many-body Brueckner--Bethe--Goldstone formalism, and the quark matter phase within the MIT bag model using a density dependent bag constant. We find that the rotational frequencies of neutron stars with deconfined quark phases in their cores rival …
We determine the quark-hadron transition line in the whole region of temperature (T) and baryon-number chemical potential (μ_B) from lattice QCD results and neutron-star mass measurements, making the quark-hadron hybrid model that is consistent with the two solid constraints. The quark part of the hybrid model is the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model with entanglement vertex that reproduces lattice QCD results at mu_B/T=0, while the hadron part is the hadron resonance gas model with volume-exclusion effect that reproduces neutron-star mass measurements and the neutron-matt…
The hadron-quark phase transition in the core of massive neutron stars is studied with a newly constructed two-phase model. For nuclear matter, a nonlinear Walecka type model with general nucleon-meson and meson-meson couplings, recently calibrated by Steiner, Hemper and Fischer, is taken. For quark matter, a modified Polyakov-Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (mPNJL) model, which gives consistent results with lattice QCD data, is used. Most importantly, we introduce an isoscalar-vector interaction in the description of quark matter, and we study its influence on the hadron-quark phase transition in the int…
We discuss a three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type quantum field theoretical approach to the quark matter equation of state (EoS) with scalar diquark condensate, isoscalar vector mean field and Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft (KMT) determinant interaction. While often the diquark and vector meson couplings are considered as free parameters, we will fix them here to their values according to the Fierz transformation of a one-gluon exchange interaction. In order to estimate the effect of a possible change in the vacuum pressure of the gluon sector at finite baryon density we exploit a recent mo…
The composition of neutron stars at the extreme densities reached in their cores is currently unknown. Besides nuclear matter of normal neutrons and protons, the cores of neutron stars might harbor exotic matter such as deconfined quarks. In this paper we study strong hadron-quark phase transitions in the context of gravitational wave observations of inspiraling neutron stars. We consider upcoming detections of neutron star coalescences and model the neutron star equations of state with phase transitions through the Constant-Speed-of-Sound parametrization. We use the fact that neutron star bin…
We calculate the coefficient of bulk viscosity by considering the non-leptonic weak interactions in the cores of hybrid stars with both hyperons and quarks. We first determine the dependence of the production rate of neutrons on the reaction rate of quarks in the non-leptonic processes, that is $Γ_{n}=K_{s}Γ_{s}+Γ_Λ+2Γ_{Σ^{-}}$. The conversion rate, $K_{s}$ in our scenario is a complicated function of baryon number density. We also consider medium effect of quark matter on bulk viscosity. Using these results, we estimate the limiting rotation of the hybrid stars, which may suppress the r-mode …
We discuss the properties of neutron stars and their modifications due to the occurrence of hyperons and quarks in the core of the star. More specifically, we consider the general problem of exotic particles inside compact stars in light of the observed two-solar mass pulsar. In addition, we investigate neutron star cooling and a possible explanation of the recently measured cooling curve of the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cas A.
It is understood that strong magnetic fields affect the structure of neutron stars. Nevertheless, many calculations for magnetized neutron stars are still being performed using symmetric solutions of Einstein's equations. In this conference proceeding, we review why this is not the correct procedure and we also discuss the effects of magnetic fields on the stellar population and temperature profiles.
We study cold dense quark matter and hybrid neutron stars with a Dyson-Schwinger quark model and various choices of the quark-gluon vertex. We obtain the equation of state of quark matter in beta equilibrium and investigate the hadron-quark phase transition in combination with a hadronic equation of state derived within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory. Comparing with the results for quark matter with the rainbow approximation, the Ball-Chiu ansatz and the 1BC ansatz for the quark-gluon vertex lead to a reduction of the effective interaction at finite chemical potential, qualitative…
A class of hybrid compact star equations of state is investigated that joins by a Maxwell construction a low-density phase of hadronic matter, modeled by a relativistic meanfield approach with excluded nucleon volume, with a high-density phase of color superconducting two-flavor quark matter, described within a nonlocal covariant chiral quark model. We find the conditions on the vector meson coupling in the quark model under which a stable branch of hybrid compact stars occurs in the cases with and without diquark condensation. We show that these hybrid stars do not form a third family disconn…
It has been predicted that quark and hybrid stars, containing strange quark matter in their core, have a significantly smaller radius than ordinary neutron stars. Preliminary X-ray observations of isolated neutron stars indicated a surprisingly small radius consistent with quark matter in the interior of the star. However, a new analysis of the data led to a radius corresponding to an ordinary neutron star. In the present talk we will discuss theoretical calculations of the mass-radius relation for quark and hybrid stars, taking into account medium effects in quark matter, and report on recent…
As a neutron star spins down, the nuclear matter continuously is converted into quark matter due to the core density increase and then latent heat is released. We have investigated the thermal evolution of neutron stars undergoing such deconfinement phase transition. We have taken into account the conversion in the frame of the general theory of relativity. The released energy has been estimated as a function of change rate of deconfinement baryon number. Numerical solutions to cooling equation are obtained to be very different from the without heating effect. The results show that neutron sta…
We study the properties of strange quark matter in equilibrium with normal nuclear matter. Instead of using the conventional bag model in quark sector, we achieve the confinement by a density-dependent quark mass derived from in-medium chiral condensates. In nuclear matter, we adopt the equation of state from the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone approach with three-body forces. It is found that the mixed phase can occur, for a reasonable confinement parameter, near the normal nuclear saturation density, and goes over into pure quark matter at about 5 times the saturation. The onset of mixed and quark…
