We study the star matter properties for Hybrid equation of state (EoS) by varying the bag constant. We use the Effective-Field-Theory motivated Relativistic Mean-Field model (E-RMF) for hadron phase with recently reported FSUGarnet, G3 and IOPB-I parameter sets. The result of NL3 and NL3${ωρ}$ sets are also shown for comparison. The simple MIT Bag model is applied for the quark phase to construct the hybrid EoS. The hybrid neutron star mass and radius are calculated by varying with $B^{1/4}$ to constrain the $B^{1/4}$ values. It is found that $B^{1/4}$=130-160 MeV is suitable for explaining the quark matter in neutron stars.
Using the quark-meson coupling model with the cloudy bag, we construct the equation of state for neutron stars with hyperons in SU(3) flavor symmetry. The hyperfine interaction due to the gluon exchange and the pion-cloud effect inside a baryon is taken into account in vacuum and nuclear matter. We investigate how the quark degrees of freedom and the exchanges of gluon and pion between two quarks affect the properties of nuclear and neutron-star matter. It is found that the variation of baryon substructure in matter plays an important role in supporting massive neutron stars.
We investigate the properties of an antikaon in medium, regarding itas a MIT bag. We first construct the MIT bag model for a kaon with$σ^*$ and $ϕ$ in order to describe the interaction of$s$-quarks in hyperonic matter in the framework of the modifiedquark-meson coupling model. The coupling constant $g'^{B_K}_σ$in the density-dependent bag constant $B(σ)$ is treated as afree parameter to reproduce the optical potential of a kaon in asymmetric matter and all other couplings are determined by usingSU(6) symmetry and the quark counting rule. With various values ofthe kaon potential, we calculate t…
Compact objects are the name used to classify the following objects: white dwarf, neutron star and black holes. In addition to them, some authors have suggested that in the core of a neutron star we may have the quarks u,d,s and c. In this work we investigate the structure of neutron star and strange star, described by the Tolman-Openheimer-Volkof equations. For the neutron star, we used the relativistic EoS from Walecka's model and the non-relativistic EoS PAL model. For the strange star, we used the M.I.T. bag model. We obtain results for the mass-radius relation and then we compared ours re…
As we go from center toward the surface of a neutron star, the state of baryonic matter changes from the de-confined quark-gluon to a mixed phase of quark and hadronic matter, and a thin crust of hadronic matter. For the quark matter, within MIT bag model, the total energy density of the system is the kinetic energy for non-interacting quarks plus a bag constant. In this article first we have considered a density dependent bag constant obtained using the recent experimental results of CERN SPS on the formation of a quark-gluon plasma. For calculations of the hadron phase, we use the lowest ord…
The axial vector coupling constants of the $β$ decay processes of neutron and hyperon are calculated in SU(3) chiral colour dielectric model (CCDM). Using these axial coupling constants of neutron and hyperon, in CCDM we calculate the integrals of the spin dependent structure functions for proton and neutron. Our result is similar to the results obtained by MIT bag and Cloudy bag models.
Within Bombaci's phenomenological single-nucleon potential model we study the neutron-proton effective mass splitting $m_n^*- m_p^*$ in neutron-rich matter. It is shown that an effective mass splitting of $m_n^*<m_p^*$ leads to a symmetry potential that is inconsistent with the energy dependence of the Lane potential constrained by the nucleon-nucleus scattering experimental data.
In the present work, we use a finite range effective interaction to calculate the neutron skin thickness in $^{48}$Ca and correlate these quantities with the parameters of nuclear symmetry energy. Available experimental data on the neutron skin thickness in $^{48}$Ca are used to deduce information on the density slope parameter and the curvature symmetry parameter of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation and at subsaturation densities. We obtained the constraints such as $54.5\leq L(ρ_0) \leq 97.5$ MeV and $47.3\leq L(ρ_c) \leq 57.1$ MeV for the density slope parameter. The constraints on …
One of the most intriguing consequence of the extreme conditions inside neutron stars is the possibility of the natural existence of a deconfined strange quark matter phase in the high density interior of the star. The equation of state (EOS) of strange quark matter (SQM) was recently improved in the framework of the MIT bag model by including medium effects. It was found that medium effects increase the energy per baryon of SQM and therefore lower the stability of this phase. In this work we investigate the influence of medium effects on the structure of hybrid stars within this model. We fou…
We compute a model-independent correlation between the difference of neutron-neutron and proton-proton scattering lengths |a(nn)-a^C(pp)| and the splitting in binding energies between Helium-3 and tritium nuclei. We use the effective field theory without explicit pions to show that this correlation relies only on the existence of large scattering lengths in the NN system. Our leading-order calculation, taken together with experimental values for binding energies and a^C(pp), yields a(nn)=-22.9 \pm 4.1 fm.
Pairing interactions with various density dependencies (surface/volume mixing) are constrained with the two-neutron separation energy in the Tin isotopic chain. The response associated with pairing vibrations in very neutron-rich nuclei is sensitive to the density dependence of the pairing interaction. Using the same pairing interaction in nuclear matter and in Tin nuclei, the range of densities where the LDA is valid in the pairing channel is also studied.
We propose the new quark mean-field bag (QMFB) model by incorporating the bag confinement mechanism in the original quark mean-field model. Nuclear matter and neutron star properties are studied with the QMFB model. For the study of the bag effect, we newly fit 12 parameter sets by reproducing the empirical saturation properties of nuclear matter. Quark confinement is found to be mainly demonstrated by the bag after it is included in the model, instead of the confining potential. For nuclear matter, the bag decreases the binding energy and increases the symmetry energy. For neutron star, the b…
The equation of state of de-confined quark matter within the MIT bag model is calculated. This equation of state is used to compute the structure of a neutron star with quark core. It is found that the limiting mass of the neutron star is affected considerably by this modification of the equation of state. Calculations are carried out for different choices of the bag constant.
The remaining uncertainties of isovector nuclear interactions call for reliable experimental measurements of isovector probes in finite nuclei. Based on the Bayesian analysis, although the neutron-skin thickness data or the isovector giant dipole resonance data in $^{208}$Pb can constrain only one isovector interaction parameter, correlations between other parameters are built. Using combined data of both the neutron-skin thickness and the isovector giant dipole resonance helps to constrain significantly all isovector interaction parameters, thus serves as a useful way in the future analysis.
In this undergraduate project, f-mode oscillations in neutron stars are used to constrain the equation of state of dense matter. For the first time, a systematic investigation of the role of nuclear saturation parameters on the mode oscillations is performed. It is found that the uncertainty in the determination of effective nucleon mass plays the most significant role in controlling the f-mode frequencies. Correlations of the frequencies with astrophysical observables relevant for asteroseismology are also investigated. Future detection of f-mode frequencies could then provide a unique way of…
In the framework of the relativistic mean-field theory, we have considered the equation of state of superdense nuclear matter, taking into account an effective scalar-isovector delta-meson field. The effect of the delta-meson field on the characteristics of a Maxwell-type quark phase transition has been studied. The quark phase is described with the aid of the improved version of the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) bag model, in which interactions between the u, d, s quarks inside the bag are taken into account in the one-gluon exchange approximation. For different values of the ba…
Recent observations of massive pulsars having masses of the order of two solar mass pose a new challenge for compact objects such as hybrid stars and neutron stars. Extensions of the bag model and the Nambu-Jona-Lasino model have been used to model these stars to get higher mass stars. Quark matter has been predicted in the cores of these massive stars. In this work we show that an extension of the bag model, with a chemical potential dependent bag parameter can lead to an isentropic phase transition in the core of the neutron star. Our model shows that an EoS having all three quarks $u$, $d$ …
A commonly applied quark matter model in astrophysics is the thermodynamic bag model (tdBAG). The original MIT bag model approximates the effect of quark confinement, but does not explicitly account for the breaking of chiral symmetry, an important property of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It further ignores vector repulsion. The vector-interaction-enhanced bag model (vBag) improves the tdBAG approach by accounting for both dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and repulsive vector interactions. The latter is of particular importance to studies of dense matter in beta-equilibriumto explain the tw…
I show that the standard picture of the neutron star core containing coexisting neutron and proton superfluids, with the proton component forming a type II superconductor threaded by flux tubes, is inconsistent with observations of long-period (~1 yr) precession in isolated pulsars. I conclude that either the two superfluids coexist nowhere in the stellar core, or the core is a type I superconductor rather than type II. Either possibility would have interesting implications for neutron star cooling and theories of spin jumps (glitches).
Gravitational waves from neutron-star mergers are expected to provide stringent constraints on the structure of neutron stars. At the same time, recent advances in nuclear theory have enabled reliable calculations of the low density equation of state using effective field theory based Hamiltonians and advanced techniques to solve the quantum many-body problem. In this paper, we address how the first observation of gravitational waves from GW170817 can be combined with modern calculations of the equation of state to extract useful insights about the equation of state of matter encountered insid…
We investigate the properties of mixed stars formed by hadronic and quark matter in $β$-equilibrium described by appropriate equations of state (EOS) in the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. We use the non- linear Walecka model for the hadron matter and the MIT Bag and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models for the quark matter. The phase transition to a deconfined quark phase is investigated. In particular, we study the dependence of the onset of a mixed phase and a pure quark phase on the hyperon couplings, quark model and properties of the hadronic model. We calculate the strangeness frac…
The finding of Gravitational Waves by the aLIGO scientific and VIRGO collaborations opens opportunities to better test and understand strong interactions, both nuclear-hadronic and gravitational. Assuming General Relativity holds, one can constrain hadron physics at a neutron star. But precise knowledge of the Equation of State and transport properties in hadron matter can also be used to constrain the theory of gravity itself. I review a couple of these opportunities in the context of modified f(R) gravity, the maximum mass of neutron stars, and progress in the Equation of State of neutron ma…
Heavy-ion reactions especially those induced by radioactive beams provide useful information about the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, thus the Equation of State of neutron-rich nuclear matter, relevant for many astrophysical studies. The latest developments in constraining the symmetry energy at both sub- and supra-saturation densities from analyses of the isopsin diffusion and the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions using the IBUU04 transport model are discussed. Astrophysical ramifications of the partially constrained symmetry energy on properties of neutron star crus…
Based on the current measurement of the neutron distribution radius ($R_n$) of $^{208}$Pb through the PREX-2 data, we re-visited the recently developed G3 and IOPB-I force parameter by fine-tuning some of the specific couplings within the relativistic mean-field model. The $ω-ρ-$mesons coupling $Λ_ω$ and the $ρ-$meson coupling $g_ρ$ are refitted to reproduce the experimental neutron radius of $^{208}$Pb without compromising the bulk properties of finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter observables. The modified parameter sets are applied to calculate the gross properties of finite nuclei for…
Neutron star radii are primarily determined by the pressure of isospin asymmetric matter which is proportional to the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy. Available terrestrial laboratory data on the isospin diffusion in heavy-ion reactions at intermediate energies constrain the slope of the symmetry energy. Using this constraint, we show that the radius (radiation radius) of a 1.4 solar mass neutron star is between 11.5 (14.4) and 13.6 (16.3) km.
Shell evolution is studied in the neutron-rich silicon isotopes 36,38,40 Si using neutron single-particle strengths deduced from one-neutron knockout reactions. Configurations involving neutron excita- tions across the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps are quantified experimentally in these rare isotopes. Comparisons with shell model calculations show that the tensor force, understood to drive the col- lective behavior in 42 Si with N = 28, is already important in determining the structure of 40 Si with N = 26. New data relating to cross-shell excitations provide the first quantitative support for …
We utilise the phenomenologically parameterized piecewise polytropic equations of state to study various neutron star properties. We investigate the compliance of these equations of state with several astronomical observations. We also demonstrate that the theoretical estimates of the fractional moment of inertia cannot explain all the pulsar glitches observed. We model the crust as a solid spheroidal shell to calculate the fractional moment of inertia of fast-spinning neutron stars. We also show that the braking index obtained in a simple magnetic dipole radiation model with a varying moment …
In recent years, there have been several successful attempts to constrain the equation of state of neutron star matter using input from low-energy nuclear physics and observational data. We demonstrate that significant further restrictions can be placed by additionally requiring the pressure to approach that of deconfined quark matter at high densities. Remarkably, the new constraints turn out to be highly insensitive to the amount --- or even presence --- of quark matter inside the stars.
The superfluid pairing gap of neutron matter is calculated in the framework of Quark Compound Bag model with nucleon-nucleon interactions generated by the s-channel exchange of Jaffe-Low primitives (6-quark states).
This thesis focuses on a variety of active research topics, such as nuclear matter, neutron stars, and phase transition within the framework of the RMF model. We use the previously successful effective field theory-driven Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) and density-dependent RMF (DD-RMF)formalisms for analyzing hadron matter to examine the infinite nuclear matter and neutron stars. The presence of exotic phases such as quarks has been investigated using the MIT Bag model and its variants, such as the vBag model, at various bag constants. The other exotic phases, such as hyperons, have also been …
Describing the hyperonic and quark phases of neutron stars with an isospin- and momentum-dependent effective interaction for the baryon octet and the MIT bag model, respectively, and using the Gibbs conditions to construct the mixed phase, we study the energy release due to the hadron-quark phase transition. Moreover, the frequency and damping time of the first axial $w$-mode of gravitational waves are studied for both hyperonic and hybrid stars. We find that the energy release is much more sensitive to the bag constant than the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Also, the freq…
We study the hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of neutron stars (NS's). We calculate the equation of state (EOS) of hadronic matter using the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone formalism with realistic two-body and three-body forces, as well as a relativistic mean field model. For quark matter we employ the MIT bag model constraining the bag constant by using the indications coming from the recent experimental results obtained at the CERN SPS on the formation of a quark-gluon plasma. We find necessary to introduce a density dependent bag parameter, and the corresponding consistent thermodyn…
We construct self-consistent equilibrium sequences of general relativistic, rotating neutron star models. Special emphasis in put on the determination of the maximum rotation frequency of such objects. Recently proposed models for the equation of state of neutron star matter are employed, which are derived by describing the hadronic phase within the many-body Brueckner--Bethe--Goldstone formalism, and the quark matter phase within the MIT bag model using a density dependent bag constant. We find that the rotational frequencies of neutron stars with deconfined quark phases in their cores rival …
We constrain the parameters of neutron superfluidity in the cores of neutron stars making use of the recently proposed effect of resonance stabilization of $r$-modes. To this end, we, for the first time, calculate the finite-temperature $r$-mode spectra for realistic models of rotating superfluid neutron stars, accounting for both muons and neutron-proton entrainment in their interiors. We find that the ordinary (normal) $r$-mode exhibits avoided crossings with superfluid $r$-modes at certain stellar temperatures and spin frequencies. Near the avoided crossings, the normal $r$-mode dissipates …
Neutron stars are the densest objects known in our visible universe. Properties of matter inside a neutron star are encoded in its equation of state, which has wide-ranging uncertainty from a theoretical perspective. With the current understanding of quantum chromodynamics, it is hard to determine the interactions of neutron star matter at such high densities. Also performing many body calculations is computationally intractable. Besides the constitution of the neutron star core is highly speculative -- it is not ruled out that it contains exotic matter like strange baryons, meson condensates,…
We show in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach that unambiguous correlations exist between observables of finite nuclei and nuclear matter properties. Using this correlation analysis to existing data on the neutron skin thickness of Sn isotopes, we find important constraints on the value E_{sym}(rho_0) and density slope L of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density. Combining these constraints with those from recent analyses of isospin diffusion and double neutron/proton ratio in heavy ion collisions leads to a value of L=58\pm 18 MeV approximately independent of E_{sym}(ρ_0).
Particles with strangeness content are predicted to populate dense matter, modifying the equation of state of matter inside neutron stars as well as their structure and evolution. In this work, we show how the modeling of strangeness content in dense matter affects the properties of isolated neutrons stars and the tidal deformation in binary systems. For describing nucleonic and hyperonic stars we use the many-body forces model (MBF) at zero temperature, including the $ϕ$ mesons for the description of repulsive hyperon-hyperon interactions. Hybrid stars are modeled using the MIT Bag Model with…
Using a set of model equations of state satisfying the latest constraints from both terrestrial nuclear experiments and astrophysical observations as well as state-of-the-art nuclear many-body calculations of the pure neutron matter equation of state, the tidal polarizability of canonical neutron stars in coalescing binaries is found to be a very sensitive probe of the high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy which is among the most uncertain properties of dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter. Moreover, it changes less than $\pm 10%$ by varying various properties of symmetric nuclear ma…
We try to constraints some of the nuclear matter parameters such as symmetry energy ($J$) and its slope ($L$) from the recent inferred data of the PREX-2. Other nuclear matter parameters are adopted from {\bf [Phys. Rev. C 85 035201 (2012), Phys. Rev. C 90 055203 (2014)]} papers and the linear correlation among them are checked by using the Pearson's formula. We find the correlation between $J-L$, $K_τ-J$ and $K_τ-L$ with coefficients 0.85, 0.81 and 0.76 respectively. The neutron star properties such as mass and radius are calculated with 50 unified equation of states. The results are consiste…
Neutron star due to their high interior matter density are expected to be composed of a quark core, a mixed quark-hadron matter, and a layer of hadronic matter. Thus, in this paper, we compute the equation of state of these parts of neutron star to evaluate its structure properties. We use two models for describing EOS of quark matter, NJL and MIT bag models, and employ three approaches in this work. A density dependent bag constant satisfy the quark confinement in the simple MIT bag model. We also study the interaction behavior of quarks, firstly one gluon exchange within MIT bag model and th…
Heavy-ion reactions provide a unique means to investigate the equation of state (EOS) of neutron-rich nuclear matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$. The latter plays an important role in understanding many key issues in both nuclear physics and astrophysics. Recent analyses of heavy-ion reactions have already put a stringent constraint on the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ around the saturation density. This subsequently allowed us to constrain significantly the radii and cooling mechanisms of neutron stars as well as the possible changing rate of the gravitationa…
The LIGO-Virgo collaboration ground-breaking detection of the binary neutron-star merger event, GW170817, has intensified efforts towards the understanding of the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter. In this letter, we compare directly the density-pressure constraint on the EoS obtained from a recent analysis of the neutron-star merger event to density-pressure constraints obtained from nuclear physics experiments. To relate constraints from nuclear physics to the radii and the tidal deformabilities of neutron stars, we use a large collection of Skyrme density functionals that describe p…
We present a quantitative analysis of superfluidity and superconductivity in dense matter from observations of isolated neutron stars in the context of the minimal cooling model. Our new approach produces the best fit neutron triplet superfluid critical temperature, the best fit proton singlet superconducting critical temperature, and their associated statistical uncertainties. We find that the neutron triplet critical temperature is likely $2.09^{+4.37}_{-1.41} \times 10^{8}$ K and that the proton singlet critical temperature is $7.59^{+2.48}_{-5.81} \times 10^{9}$ K. However, we also show th…
One very promising technique for measuring the dense matter Equation of State exploits hotspots that form on the neutron star surface due to the pulsar mechanism, accretion streams, or during thermonuclear explosions in the neutron star ocean. This article explains how Pulse Profile Modeling of hotspots is being used by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), an X-ray telescope installed on the International Space Station in 2017 - and why the technique is a mission driver for the next, larger-area generation of telescopes including the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eX…
Neutrons stars lighter than the Sun are basically composed of nuclear matter of density up to around twice normal nuclear density. In our recent analyses, we showed that possible simultaneous observations of masses and radii of such neutron stars could constrain $η\equiv(K_0L^2)^{1/3}$, a combination of the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter $K_0$ and the density derivative of the nuclear symmetry energy $L$ that characterizes the theoretical mass-radius relation. In this paper, we focus on the mass-radius constraint of the X-ray burster 4U 1724-307 given by Suleimanov et al. (2011)…
We have considered a hot neutron star with a quark core, a mixed phase of quark-hadron matter, and a hadronic matter crust and have determined the equation of state of the hadronic phase and the quark phase, we have then found the equation of state of the mixed phase under the Gibbs conditions. Finally, we have computed the structure of hot neutron star with the quark core and compared our results with those of the neutron star without the quark core. For the quark matter calculations, we have used the MIT bag model in which the total energy of the system is considered as the kinetic energy of…
We analyze observations of eight quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters and combine them to determine the neutron star mass-radius curve and the equation of state of dense matter. We determine the effect that several uncertainties may have on our results, including uncertainties in the distance, the atmosphere composition, the neutron star maximum mass, the neutron star mass distribution, the possible presence of a hotspot on the neutron star surface, and the prior choice for the equation of state of dense matter. We find that the radius of a 1.4 solar mass neutron star is most…
We show how observations of gravitational waves from binary neutron star (BNS) mergers over the next few years can be combined with insights from nuclear physics to obtain useful constraints on the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter, in particular, constraining the neutron-matter EoS to within 20% between one and two times the nuclear saturation density $n_0\approx 0.16\ {\text{fm}^{-3}}$. Using Fisher information methods, we combine observational constraints from simulated BNS merger events drawn from various population models with independent measurements of the neutron star radii expec…
Recent observations by the Chandra observatory suggest that some neutron stars may cool rapidly, perhaps by the direct URCA process which requires a high proton fraction. The proton fraction is determined by the nuclear symmetry energy whose density dependence may be constrained by measuring the neutron radius of a heavy nucleus, such as 208Pb. Such a measurement is necessary for a reliable extrapolation of the proton fraction to the higher densities present in the neutron star. A large neutron radius in 208Pb implies a stiff symmetry energy that grows rapidly with density, thereby favoring a …
Based on the distribution of tidal deformabilities and component masses of binary neutron star merger GW170817, the parametric equation of states (EOS) are employed to probe the nuclear symmetry energy and the properties of neutron star. To obtain a proper distribution of the parameters of the EOS that is consistent with the observation, Bayesian analysis is used and the constraints of causality and maximum mass are considered. From this analysis, it is found that the symmetry energy at twice the saturation density of nuclear matter can be constrained within $E_{sym}(2{ρ_{0}})$ = $34.5^{+20.5}…
We construct an equation of state (EOS) for neutron stars by interpolating hadronic EOS at low density and quark EOS at high density. A hadronic model based on the parity doublet structure is used for hadronic matter and a quark model of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type is for quark matter. We assume crossover between hadronic matter and quark matter in the the color-flavor locked phase. The nucleon mass of the parity doublet model has a mass associated with the chiral symmetry breaking, and a chiral invariant mass $m_0$ which is insensitive to the chiral condensate. The value of $m_0$ affects the nuc…
The first detection of gravitational waves from the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 has started to provide important new constraints on the nuclear equation of state at high density. The tidal deformability bound of GW170817 combined with the observed two solar mass neutron star poses a serious challenge to theoretical formulations of realistic equations of state. We analyze a fully comprehensive set of relativistic nuclear mean-field theories by confronting them with the observational bounds and the measured neutron-skin thickness. We find that only a few models can withstand these …
