A commonly applied quark matter model in astrophysics is the thermodynamic bag model (tdBAG). The original MIT bag model approximates the effect of quark confinement, but does not explicitly account for the breaking of chiral symmetry, an important property of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It further ignores vector repulsion. The vector-interaction-enhanced bag model (vBag) improves the tdBAG approach by accounting for both dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and repulsive vector interactions. The latter is of particular importance to studies of dense matter in beta-equilibriumto explain the two solar mass maximum mass constraint for neutron stars. The model is motivated by analyses of QCD based Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSE), assuming a simple quark-quark contact interaction. Here, we focus on the study of hybrid neutron star properties resulting from the application of vBag and will discuss possible extensions.
For quark matter studies in astrophysics the thermodynamic bag model (tdBAG) has been widely used. Despite its success it fails to account for various phenomena expected from Quantum-Chromo-Dynamics (QCD). We suggest a straightforward extension of tdBAG in order to take the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry and the influence of vector interactions explicitly into account. As for tdBAG the model mimics confinement in a phenomenological approach. It is based on an analysis of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite density. Furthermore, we demonstrate how NJL and bag models in this reg…
In this work we study different variations of the MIT bag model. We start with the so called non-ideal bag model and discuss it in detail. Then we implement a vector interaction in the MIT bag model that simulates a meson exchange interaction and fix the quark-meson coupling constants via symmetry group theory. At the end we propose an original model, inspired by the Boguta-Bodmer models, which allows us to control the repulsion interaction at high densities. For each version of the model we obtain a stability window as predicted by the Bodmer-Witten conjecture and discuss its thermodynamic co…
The quark-meson coupling model for nuclear matter, which describes nuclear matter as non-overlapping MIT bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons, is modified by introducing medium modification of the bag constant. We model the density dependence of the bag constant in two different ways: one invokes a direct coupling of the bag constant to the scalar meson field, and the other relates the bag constant to the in-medium nucleon mass. Both models feature a decreasing bag constant with increasing density. We find that when the bag constant is significantly reduced in…
Localized static solutions of the 2D-O(3) model are investigated in a representation with the 3-vector field $\vec Phi$ split into the unit vector $\hat Phi$ and the modulus $Φ$. As in the nonlinear version of the model this allows for the definition of a topological winding number $B$, and for the separation of the complete configuration space into distinct $B$-sectors. For small values of the $Φ^4$-coupling strength the stable energy minima in these sectors are characterized by bag formation in the modulus field which in the standard cartesian representation of the linear O(3) model would be…
In the present work we use the modified versions of the MIT bag model, on which both a vector field and a self-interacting term are introduced, to obtain hot quark matter and to investigate the QCD phase diagram. We first analyze two-flavored quark matter constrained to both the freeze-out and the liquid-gas phase transition at the hadronic phase. Later, three-flavored quark matter subject to $β$ equilibrium and charge neutrality is used to compute quark star macroscopic properties, which are confronted with recent observational massive and canonical star radius results. Finally, a comparison …
The modified quark-meson coupling model, which features a density dependent bag constant and bag radius in nuclear matter, is checked against the EMC effect within the framework of dynamical rescaling. Our emphasis is on the change in the average bag radius in nuclei, as evaluated in a local density approximation, and its implication for the rescaling parameter. We find that when the bag constant in nuclear matter is significantly reduced from its free-space value, the resulting rescaling parameter is in good agreement with that required to explain the observed depletion of the structure funct…
The axial vector coupling constants of the $β$ decay processes of neutron and hyperon are calculated in SU(3) chiral colour dielectric model (CCDM). Using these axial coupling constants of neutron and hyperon, in CCDM we calculate the integrals of the spin dependent structure functions for proton and neutron. Our result is similar to the results obtained by MIT bag and Cloudy bag models.
The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model for nuclear matter, which describes nuclear matter as non-overlapping MIT bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons is modified by the introduction of a density dependent bag constant. It is found that when the bag constant is significantly reduced in nuclear medium with respect to its free space value, large canceling isoscalar Lorentz scalar and vector potentials for the nucleon in nuclear matter emerge naturally. Such potentials are comparable to those suggested by relativistic nuclear phenomenology. This suggests that the mo…
The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model for nuclear matter, which describes nuclear matter as non-overlapping MIT bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons is modified by the introduction of a density dependent bag constant. The density dependence of the bag constant is related to that of the in-medium effective nucleon mass through a scaling ansatz suggested by partial chiral symmetry restoration in nuclear matter. This modification overcomes drawbacks of the QMC model and leads to the recovery of the essential features of relativistic nuclear phenomenology. This sug…
We considered the quark-meson coupling model for a nucleon. The model describes a nucleon as an MIT bag, in which quarks are coupled to the scalar and the vector mesons. A set of coupled equations for the quark and the meson fields are obtained and are solved in a self-consistent manner. We show that the mass of a dressed MIT bag interacting with $σ$- and $ω$-meson fields differs considerably from the mass of the free MIT bag. The effects of the density-dependent bag constant are investigated. The results of our calculations imply that the self-energy of the bag in the quark-meson coupling mod…
We summarize the current theoretical and experimental status of the spectral changes of vector mesons ($ρ$, $ω$, $ϕ$) in nuclear medium. Various approaches including QCD sum rules, effective theory of hadrons and bag models show decreasing of the vector meson masses in nuclear matter. Possibility to detect the mass shift through lepton pairs in $γ-A$, $p-A$ and $A-A$ reactions are also discussed.
The quark-meson coupling model for a nucleon is considered. The model describes a nucleon as an MIT bag, in which quarks are coupled to scalar and vector mesons. A set of coupled equations for the quark and the meson fields are obtained and are solved in a self-consistent way. It is shown that the mass of a nucleon as a dressed MIT bag interacting with sigma- and omega-meson fields significantly differs from the mass of a free MIT bag. A few sets of model parameters are obtained so that the mass of a dressed MIT bag becomes the nucleon mass. The results of our calculations imply that the self-…
We investigate the surface tension $σ$ and the curvature energy $γ$ of quark matter drops in the MIT bag model with vector interactions. Finite size corrections to the density of states are implemented by using the multiple reflection expansion (MRE) formalism. We find that $σ$ and $γ$ are strongly enhanced by new terms arising from vector interactions. With respect to the noninteracting case they are increased by a large factor, which can be as high as $\sim 10$ when the vector coupling constant $g$ varies within the range used in the literature. This behavior may have major consequences for …
Soluble model of a relativistic particle describing a bag of matter with fixed radius held together in perfect balance by a self-consistent combination of three forces generated by electromagnetic and massive scalar and vector fields is presented. For realistic values of parameters the bag radius becomes that of a proton.
Density-dependent relations among saturation properties of symmetric nuclear matter and hyperonic matter, properties of hadron-(strange) quark hybrid stars are discussed by applying the conserving nonlinear $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$ hadronic mean-field theory. Nonlinear interactions that will be renormalized as effective coupling constants, effective masses and sources of equations of motion are constructed self-consistently by maintaining thermodynamic consistency to the mean-field approximation. The coupling constants expected from the hadronic mean-field model and SU(6) quark model for the vector couplin…
Short-range quark-quark correlations in hot nuclear matter are examined within the modified quark-meson coupling model (MQMC) by adding repulsive scalar and vector quark-quark interactions. Without these correlations, the bag radius increases with the baryon density. However when the correlations are introduced the bag size shrinks as the bags overlap. Also as the strength of the scalar quark-quark correlation is increased, the decrease of the effective nucleon mass $M^{*}_N$ with the baryonic density is slowed down and tends to saturate at high densities. Within this model we study the phase …
The Quark Meson Coupling Model which describes nuclear matter as a collection of non-overlapping MIT bags interacting by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons is used to study nuclear matter at finite temperature. In its modified version, the density dependence of the bag constant is introduced by a direct coupling between the bag constant and the scalar mean field. In the present work, the coupling of the scalar mean field with the constituent quarks is considered exactly through the solution of the Dirac equation. Our results show that a phase transition takes place at a c…
For studies of quark matter in astrophysical scenarios the thermodynamic bag model (tdBag) is commonly employed. Although successful, it does not account for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (D$χ$SB) and repulsions due to the vector interaction which is crucial to explain recent observations of massive, two solar mass neutron stars. In Klähn & Fischer (2015) we developed the novel vBag quark matter model which takes these effects into account. This article extends vBag to finite temperatures and isospin asymmetry. Another particular feature of vBag is the determination of the deconfinement b…
We implement a Bayesian analysis of the properties of non-rotating hybrid stars at equilibrium with quark matter cores, as described by the SU(3) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The hadronic phase is described by a unified metamodeling approach, with a prior parameter space covering the present uncertainties on nuclear matter properties with nucleonic degrees of freedom. The parameter space of the NJL model includes vector-isoscalar and vector-isovector couplings and, additionally, an effective bag constant for the quark pressure is introduced as a free parameter. The phase transition is assu…

We calculate the magnetic moments of hyperons in dense nuclear matter by using relativistic quark models. Hyperons are treated as MIT bags, and the interactions are considered to be mediated by the exchange of scalar and vector mesons which are approximated as mean fields. Model dependence is investigated by using the quark-meson coupling model and the modified quark-meson coupling model; in the former the bag constant is independent of density and in the latter it depends on density. Both models give us the magnitudes of the magnetic moments increasing with density for most octet baryons. But…
We study hot nuclear matter in an explicit quark model based on a mean field description of nonoverlapping nucleon bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons as well as the glueball field. The glueball exchange as well as a realization of the broken scale invariance of quantum chromodynamics is achieved through the introduction of a dilaton field. The calculations also take into account the medium-dependence of the bag constant. The effective potential with dilatons is applied to nuclear matter. The nucleon properties at finite temperature as calculated here are fou…
This paper gives an overview of the model of a neutron star with non-zero strangeness constructed within the framework of the nonlinear realization of the chiral $SU(3)_{L}\times SU(3)_{R}$ symmetry. The emphasis is put on the physical properties of the matter of a neutron star. The obtained solution is particularly aimed at the problem of the construction of a theoretical model of a neutron star matter with hyperons that will give high value of the maximum mass.
