This paper reviews the current understanding of double neutron star and neutron star black hole binaries. It addresses mainly (nuclear) astrophysics aspects of compact binary mergers and thus complements recent reviews that have emphasized the numerical relativity viewpoint. In particular, the paper discusses different channels to release neutron-rich matter into the host galaxy, connections between compact binary mergers and short Gamma-ray bursts and accompanying electromagnetic signals.
In this study we explore the nucleosynthesis in the dynamic ejecta of compact binary mergers. We are particularly interested in the question how sensitive the resulting abundance patterns are to the parameters of the merging system. Therefore, we systematically investigate combinations of neutron star masses in the range from 1.0 to 2.0 \Msun and, for completeness, we compare the results with those from two simulations of a neutron star black hole merger. The ejecta masses vary by a factor of five for the studied systems, but all amounts are (within the uncertainties of the merger rates) compa…
The stochastic gravitational wave background produced by supernovas, magnetars and merger of binaries constituted by a pair of compact objects is reviewed and updated. The merger of systems composed by two black holes dominates by far the background signal, whose amplitude in the range 10-100 Hz is above the sensitivity of the planned Einstein laser interferometer (ET). The background signal at 25 Hz estimated by the LIGO-VIRGO collaboration, based on the available merger detection data, is in good agreement with the present theoretical predictions.

One of the crucial windows for distinguishing astrophysical black holes from primordial black holes is through the redshift evolution of their respective merger rates. The low redshift population of black holes of astrophysical origin is expected to follow the star formation rate. The corresponding peak in their merger rate peaks at a redshift smaller than that of the star formation rate peak ($z_p \approx 2$), depending on the time delay between the formation and mergers of black holes. Black holes of primordial origin are going to be present before the formation of the stars, and the merger …
Two of the dominant channels to produce merging stellar-mass black-hole binaries are believed to be the isolated evolution of binary stars in the field and dynamical formation in star clusters. The first reported black-hole binary event from the third LIGO/Virgo observing run (GW190412) is unusual in that it has unequal masses, nonzero effective spin, and nonzero primary spin at 90\% confidence interval. We show that this event should be exceedingly rare in the context of both the field and cluster formation scenarios. Interpreting GW190412 as a remnant of a previous black-hole merger provides…
The first neutron star (NS) merger observed by advanced LIGO and Virgo, GW170817, and its fireworks of electromagnetic counterparts across the entire electromagnetic spectrum marked the beginning of multi-messenger astronomy and astrophysics with gravitational waves. The ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared emission was consistent with being powered by the radioactive decay of nuclei synthesized in the merger ejecta by the rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Starting from an outline of the inferred properties of this 'kilonova' emission, I discuss possible astrophysical sites for r-p…
The discovery of the gravitational-wave source GW150914 with the Advanced LIGO detectors provides the first observational evidence for the existence of binary black-hole systems that inspiral and merge within the age of the Universe. Such black-hole mergers have been predicted in two main types of formation models, involving isolated binaries in galactic fields or dynamical interactions in young and old dense stellar environments. The measured masses robustly demonstrate that relatively "heavy" black holes ($\gtrsim 25\, M_\odot$) can form in nature. This discovery implies relatively weak mass…

The localization of stellar-mass binary black hole mergers using gravitational waves is critical in understanding the properties of the binaries' host galaxies, observing possible electromagnetic emission from the mergers, or using them as a cosmological distance ladder. The precision of this localization can be substantially increased with prior astrophysical information about the binary system. In particular, constraining the inclination of the binary can reduce the distance uncertainty of the source. Here we present the first realistic set of localizations for binary black hole mergers, inc…
We present a search for merging compact binary gravitational-wave sources that produce a signal appearing solely or primarily in a single detector. Past analyses have heavily relied on coincidence between multiple detectors to reduce non-astrophysical background. However, for $\sim40\%$ of the total time of the 2015-2017 LIGO-Virgo observing runs only a single detector was operating. We discuss the difficulties in assigning significance and calculating the probability of astrophysical origin for candidates observed primarily by a single detector, and suggest a straightforward resolution using …
Primordial black holes (PBHs) from the early Universe constitute an attractive dark matter candidate. First detections of black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) candidate gravitational wave events by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration, GW200105 and GW200115, already prompted speculations about non-astrophysical origin. We analyze, for the first time, the total volumetric merger rates of PBH-NS binaries formed via two-body gravitational scattering, finding them to be subdominant to the astrophysical BH-NS rates. In contrast to binary black holes, a significant fraction of which can be of primordial origin, …
Axion-like particles (ALP) can in principle be produced in very hot and dense astrophysical environments, escape from the extreme object where such conditions are met, and then be converted in gamma--rays in the magnetic fields intervening between the event and the Earth. This process potentially offers a new window on both the physics of the axions, and the inner working of the astrophysical objects where they are produced. Interestingly, while this process has been studied for core--collapse supernovae and other extreme astrophysical events, no estimate exists for Neutron Star Mergers, objec…

The formation of merging binary black holes can occur through multiple astrophysical channels such as, e.g., isolated binary evolution and dynamical formation or, alternatively, have a primordial origin. Increasingly large gravitational-wave catalogs of binary black-hole mergers have allowed for the first model selection studies between different theoretical predictions to constrain some of their model uncertainties and branching ratios. In this work, we show how one could add an additional and independent constraint to model selection by using the stochastic gravitational-wave background. In …
The composition of the early Solar System can be inferred from meteorites. Many elements heavier than iron were formed by the rapid neutron-capture process (r process), but the astrophysical sources where this occurred remain poorly understood. We demonstrate that the near-identical half-lives ($\simeq$ 15.6 Myr) of the radioactive r-process nuclei 129I and 247Cm preserve their ratio, irrespective of the time between production and incorporation into the Solar System. We constrain the last r-process source by comparing the measured meteoritic 129I / 247Cm = 438 $\pm$ 184 to nucleosynthesis cal…
Determination of baryon number (or mass) distribution of the strangelets, that may fragment out of the warm and excited strange quark matter ejected in the merger of strange stars in compact binary stellar systems in the Galaxy, is attempted here by using a statistical disassembly model. Finite mass of strange quarks is taken into account in the analysis. Resulting charges of the strangelets and the corresponding Coulomb corrections are included to get a plausible size distribution of those strangelets as they are produced in binary stellar mergers thus getting injected in the Galaxy. From thi…

In the current work an equation of state model with a first-order phase transition for astrophysical applications is presented. The model is based on a two-phase approach for quark-hadron phase transitions, which leads by construction to a first-order phase transition. The resulting model has already been successfully used in several astrophysical applications, such as cold neutron stars, core-collapse supernova explosions and binary neutron star mergers. Main goal of this work is to present the details of the model, discuss certain features and eventually publish it in a tabulated form for fu…
Differences in the equation of state (EOS) of dense matter translate into differences in astrophysical simulations and their multi-messenger signatures. Thus, extending the number of EOSs for astrophysical simulations allows us to probe the effect of different aspects of the EOS in astrophysical phenomena. In this work, we construct the EOS of hot and dense matter based on the Akmal, Pandharipande, and Ravenhall (APR) model and thereby extend the open-source SROEOS code which computes EOSs of hot dense matter for Skyrme-type parametrizations of the nuclear forces. Unlike Skrme-type models, in …
Neutron star mergers, referring to both binary neutron star and neutron star black hole mergers, are the canonical multimessenger events. They have been detected across the electromagnetic spectrum, have recently been detected in gravitational waves, and are likely to produce neutrinos over several decades in energy. The non-thermal prompt and afterglow emission of short gamma-ray bursts and the quasi-thermal emission from the radioactively powered kilonovae provide distinct insights into the physics of neutron star mergers. When combined with direct information on coalescence from gravitation…
The expected event rate of lensed gravitational wave sources scales with the merger rate at redshift $z\geq 1$, where the optical depth for lensing is high. It is commonly assumed that the merger rate of the astrophysical compact objects is closely connected with the star formation rate, which peaks around redshift $z\sim 2$. However, a major source of uncertainty is the delay time between the formation and merger of compact objects. We explore the impact of delay time on the lensing event rate. We show that as the delay time increases, the peak of the merger rate of gravitational wave sources…
We perform a statistical inference of the astrophysical population of binary black hole (BBH) mergers observed during the first two observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, including events reported in the GWTC-1 and IAS catalogs. We derive a novel formalism to fully and consistently account for events of arbitrary significance. We carry out a software injection campaign to obtain a set of mock astrophysical events subject to our selection effects, and use the search background to compute the astrophysical probabilities $p_{\rm astro}$ of candidate events for several phenomenologica…
New {\em ab initio} constrained extended Skyrme equations of state for simulations of neutron stars, supernovae and binary mergers: I. Subsaturation density domain
In this {\it Letter} we calculate the fraction of highly eccentric binary black hole (BBH) mergers resulting from binary-single interactions. Using an $N$-body code that includes post-Newtonian correction terms, we show that $\gtrsim 1\%$ of all BBH mergers resulting from this channel will have an eccentricity $e>0.1$ when coming into the LIGO frequency band. As the majority of BBH mergers forming in globular clusters are assembled through three-body encounters, we suggest that such interactions are likely to dominate the population of high eccentricity BBH mergers detectable by LIGO. The rela…
We explore the possibility that high energy astrophysical neutrinos can interact with the dark matter on their way to Earth. Keeping in mind that new physics might leave its signature at such energies, we have considered all possible topologies for effective interactions between neutrino and dark matter. Building models, that give rise to a significant flux suppression of astrophysical neutrinos at Earth, is rather difficult. We present a $Z^{\prime}$-mediated model in this context. Encompassing a large variety of models, a wide range of dark matter masses from $10^{-21}$ eV up to a TeV, this …
Since the first signal in 2015, the gravitational-wave detections of merging binary black holes (BBHs) by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations (LVC) have completely transformed our understanding of the lives and deaths of compact object binaries, and have motivated an enormous amount of theoretical work on the astrophysical origin of these objects. We show that the phenomenological fit to the redshift-dependent merger rate of BBHs from Abbott et al. (2020) is consistent with a purely dynamical origin for these objects, and that the current merger rate of BBHs from the LVC could be explained entir…
Neutron star (NS) mergers provide us with information rich in physics using multi-messenger astrophysical observations. One of the probable remnants of such a merger is a differentially rotating hot hypermassive neutron star. The stability of the merger remnant depends crucially on the underlying Equation of State (EoS) and thus provides a method to probe the nature of dense matter in NSs. In this work, we search for possible signatures of strangeness containing matter in the NS interior on the secular stability of the merger remnant. We also use recently proposed methods to make a rough estim…
We review theoretical findings, astrophysical modeling, and current gravitational-wave evidence of hierarchical stellar-mass black-hole mergers. While most of the compact binary mergers detected by LIGO and Virgo are expected to consist of first-generation black holes formed from the collapse of stars, others might instead be of second (or higher) generation, containing the remnants of previous black-hole mergers. Such a subpopulation of hierarchically assembled black holes presents distinctive gravitational-wave signatures, namely higher masses, possibly within the pair-instability mass gap, …
Mergers of binaries consisting of two neutron stars, or a black hole and a neutron star, offer a unique opportunity to study a range of physical and astrophysical processes using two different and almost orthogonal probes - gravitational waves (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) emission. The GW signal probes the binary and the physical processes that take place during the last stages of the merger, while the EM emission provides clues to the material that is thrown out following the merger. The accurate localization, which only the EM emission can provide, also indicates the astrophysical setting i…

Both fast and slow configurations of rotating neutron stars (NSs) are studied with the recently-constructed unified NS EoSs. The calculations for pure quark stars (QSs) and hybrid stars (HSs) are also done, using several updated quark matter EoSs and Gibbs construction for obtaining hadron-quark mixed phase. All three types of EoSs fulfill the recent 2-solar-mass constrain. By confronting the glitch observations with the theoretical calculations for the crustal moment of inertia (MoI), we find that the glitch crisis is still present in Vela-like pulsars. An upcoming accurate MoI measurement (e…
Gravitational-wave detections of black hole mergers in binary systems offer an excellent opportunity to test the 2nd law of black hole thermodynamics. In this paper, we review how the entropy of any astrophysical black hole is calculated and we use LIGO and VIRGO's mass and spin data measurements from black hole merger events detected over the past years to perform entropy calculations and numerically test the generalized 2nd law of thermodynamics. Besides, we analyze the mathematical correlation between the black hole merger event's initial parameters to prove and conclude that the theorem wi…
To search for transient astrophysical neutrino sources, IceCube's optical and X-ray follow-up program is triggered by two or more neutrino candidates arriving from a similar direction within 100s. However, the rate of such neutrino multiplets was found to be consistent with the expected background of chance coincidences, such that the data does not provide indications for the existence of short-lived transient neutrino sources. Upper limits on the neutrino flux of transient source populations are presented in Aartsen et al. (2019) and we show here how these limits apply to the predicted neutri…
We present the first systematic study on how distant weak interactions impact the dynamical evolution of merging binary black holes (BBHs) in dense stellar clusters. Recent studies indicate that dense clusters are likely to significantly contribute to the rate of merging BBHs observable through gravitational waves (GWs), and that many of these mergers will appear with notable eccentricities measurable in the LISA and LIGO sensitivity bands. This is highly interesting, as eccentricity can be used to distinguish between different astrophysical merger channels. However, all of these recent studie…
The cosmic evolution of the neutron star merger (NSM) rate can be deduced from the observed cosmic star formation rate. This allows to estimate the rate expected in the horizon of the gravitational wave detectors advanced Virgo and ad LIGO and to compare those rates with independent predictions. In this context, the rapid neutron capture process, or r process, can be used as a constraint assuming NSM is the main astrophysical site for this nucleosynthetic process. We compute the early cosmic evolution of a typical r process element, Europium. Eu yields from NSM are taken from recent nucleosynt…
We investigate the properties of the host galaxies of compact binary mergers across cosmic time. To this end, we combine population synthesis simulations together with galaxy catalogues from the hydrodynamical cosmological simulation EAGLE to derive the properties of the host galaxies of binary neutron star (BNS), black hole-neutron star (BHNS) and binary black hole (BBH) mergers. Within this framework, we derive the host galaxy probability, i.e., the probability that a galaxy hosts a compact binary coalescence as a function of its stellar mass, star formation rate, $K_s$ magnitude and $B$ mag…
Half of all the elements in the universe heavier than iron were created by rapid neutron capture. The theory for this astrophysical `$r$-process' was worked out six decades ago and requires an enormous neutron flux to make the bulk of these elements. Where this happens is still debated. A key piece of missing evidence is the identification of freshly-synthesised $r$-process elements in an astrophysical site. Current models and circumstantial evidence point to neutron star mergers as a probable $r$-process site, with the optical/infrared `kilonova' emerging in the days after the merger a likely…
With the advent of gravitational wave astronomy, searching for gravitational wave echoes from black holes (BHs) is becoming an interesting probe of their quantum nature near their horizons. Newborn BHs may be strong emitters of echoes, as they accompany large perturbations in the surrounding spacetime upon formation. Utilizing the Quantum Black Hole Seismology framework (Oshita et al. 2020), we study the expected echoes upon BH formation resulting from neutron star mergers and failed supernovae. For BH remnants from neutron star mergers, we evaluate the consistency of these models with the rec…
The advent of Multi-Messenger Astronomy has allowed for new types of source searches within the neutrino community. We present the results of the first search for GeV astrophysical neutrinos emitted from Compact Binary Mergers, i.e. binary black hole or binary neutron star mergers, detected by the LIGO and Virgo interferometers. We introduce a new approach that lowers the energy threshold of IceCube from roughly 10 GeV to <1 GeV. This method uses an innovative event selection of GeV neutrino events in IceCube and searches for a statistically significant increase in the amount of GeV-like event…
The first inspiral of two neutron stars observed in gravitational waves was remarkably close, allowing the kind of simultaneous gravitational wave and electromagnetic observation that had not been expected for several years. Their merger, followed by a gamma-ray burst and a kilonova, was observed across the spectral bands of electromagnetic telescopes. These GW and electromagnetic observations have led to dramatic advances in understanding short gamma-ray bursts; determining the origin of the heaviest elements; and determining the maximum mass of neutron stars. From the imprint of tides on the…

We demonstrate that a population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can describe the observed spectrum of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at and above the ankle, and that the dominant contribution comes from low-luminosity BL Lacs. An additional, subdominant contribution from high-luminosity AGN is needed to improve the description of the composition observables, leading to a substantial neutrino flux that peaks at EeV energies. We also find that different properties for the low- and high-luminosity AGN populations are required; a possibly similar baryonic loading can already be excluded f…
GW200115 was the second merger of a black hole and a neutron star confidently detected through gravitational waves. Inference on the signal allows for a large black hole spin misaligned with the orbital angular momentum, but shows little support for aligned spin values. We show that this is a natural consequence of measuring the parameters of a black hole -- neutron star binary with non-spinning components while assuming the priors used in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA analysis. We suggest that, a priori, a non-spinning binary is more consistent with current astrophysical understanding.

We introduce the Merger Entropy Index ($\mathcal{I}_\mathrm{BBH}$), a new parameter to measure the efficiency of entropy transfer for any generic binary black hole merger in General Relativity. We find that $\mathcal{I}_\mathrm{BBH}$ is bounded between an asymptotic maximum and minimum. For the observed population of mergers detected by LIGO and Virgo, we find that $\mathcal{I}_\mathrm{BBH}$ is $\lesssim30\%$ of its theoretical maximum. By imposing the thermodynamical consistency between the pre- and post-merger states through $\mathcal{I}_\mathrm{BBH}$, we showcase BRAHMA -- a novel framework…
