Heinz Huber (1956) considered the following problem on the the hyperbolic plane H. Consider a strictly hyperbolic subgroup of automorphisms on H with compact quotient, and choose a conjugacy class in this group. Count the number of vertices inside an increasing ball, which are images of a fixed point x in H under automorphisms in the chosen conjugacy class, and describe the asymptotic behaviour of this number as the size of the ball goes to infinity. We use a well-known analogy between the hyperbolic plane and the regular tree to solve this problem on the regular tree.
We investigate the size of the embedded regular tree rooted at a vertex in a $d$ regular random graph. We show that almost always, the radius of this tree will be ${1/2}\log n$, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph. And we give an asymptotic estimate for Gauss' Hypergeometric Function.
The lattice dimension of a graph G is the minimal dimension of a cubic lattice in which G can be isometrically embedded. We prove that the lattice dimension of a tree with n leaves is $\lceil n/2 \rceil$.
A tree is called k-ended tree if it has at most k leaves, where a leaf is a vertex of degree one. In this paper we prove that every 3-regular connected graph with n vertices such that n is greater than 8 has spanning sub tree with at most [(2n+4)/9]-ended tree. At the end we give a conjecture about spanning k-ended trees on 3-regular connected graphs.
We show that the set of balanced binary trees is closed by interval in the Tamari lattice. We establish that the intervals [T0, T1] where T0 and T1 are balanced trees are isomorphic as posets to a hypercube. We introduce tree patterns and synchronous grammars to get a functional equation of the generating series enumerating balanced tree intervals.
Some posets of binary leaf-labeled trees are shown to be supersolvable lattices and explicit EL-labelings are given. Their characteristic polynomials are computed, recovering their known factorization in a different way.
We show that the set of balanced binary trees is closed by interval in the Tamari lattice. We establish that the intervals [T, T'] where T and T' are balanced binary trees are isomorphic as posets to a hypercube. We introduce synchronous grammars that allow to generate tree-like structures and obtain fixed-point functional equations to enumerate these. We also introduce imbalance tree patterns and show that they can be used to describe some sets of balanced binary trees that play a particular role in the Tamari lattice. Finally, we investigate other families of binary trees that are also close…
We introduce a new combinatorial structure: the metasylvester lattice on decreasing trees. It appears in the context of the $m$-Tamari lattices and other related $m$-generalizations. The metasylvester congruence has been recently introduced by Novelli and Thibon. We show that it defines a sublattice of the $m$-permutations where elements can be represented by decreasing labelled trees: the metasylvester lattice. We study the combinatorial properties of this new structure. In particular, we give different realizations of the lattice. The $m$-Tamari lattice is by definition a sublattice of our n…
We count the number of closed walks on a vertex in a regular tree using the Catalan's triangle and also the Borel's triangle, showing another combinatorial structure counted by these two array of numbers.
The existence of greatest lower bounds in the imbalance order of path-length sequences of binary trees is seen to be a consequence of a joint monotonicity property of the greater and lower expension operations. Path length sequences that are join-irreducible in the imbalance lattice are characterized.
Bouttier, Di Francesco and Guitter introduced a method for solving certain classes of algebraic recurrence relations arising the context of embedded trees and map enumeration. The aim of this note is to apply this method to three problems. First, we discuss a general family of embedded binary trees, trying to unify and summarize several enumeration results for binary tree families, and also to add new results. Second, we discuss the family of embedded $d$-ary trees, embedded in the plane in a natural way. Third, we show that several enumeration problems concerning simple families of lattice pa…
The register function (or Horton-Strahler number) of a binary tree is a well-known combinatorial parameter. We study a reduction procedure for binary trees which offers a new interpretation for the register function as the maximal number of reductions that can be applied to a given tree. In particular, the precise asymptotic behavior of the number of certain substructures ("branches") that occur when reducing a tree repeatedly is determined. In the same manner we introduce a reduction for simple two-dimensional lattice paths from which a complexity measure similar to the register function can …

A bijection is constructed between two sets of height restricted lattice paths by means of translating them in two tree classe, namely plane trees and Elena trees. An old bijection between them can be used now for that actual problem.
We give new interpretations of the $ν$-Tamari lattice of Préville-Ratelle and Viennot. First, we describe it as a rotation lattice of $ν$-trees, which uncovers the relation with known combinatorial objects such as tree-like tableaux and north-east fillings. Then, using a formulation in terms of bracket vectors of $ν$-trees and componentwise order, we provide a simple description of the lattice property. We also show that the $ν$-Tamari lattice is isomorphic to the increasing-flip poset of a suitably chosen subword complex, and settle a special case of Rubey's lattice conjecture concerning the …
In the hyperbolic plane there are infinite regular lattices. From a fix vertex of a lattice tree graphs can be constructed recursively to the next layers with edges of the lattice. In this article we examine the properties of the growing of trees and the probabilities of length of trees considering the vertices on level i.
We provide a new derivation of the well-known generating function counting the number of walks on a regular tree that start and end at the same vertex, and more generally, a generating function for the number of walks that end at a vertex a distance i from the start vertex. These formulas seem to be very old, and go back, in an equivalent form, at least to Harry Kesten's work on symmetric random walks on groups from 1959, and in the present form to Brendan McKay (1983).
The lattice polynomials $L_{i,j}(x)$ are introduced by Hough and Shapiro as a weighted count of certain lattice paths from the origin to the point $(i,j)$. In particular, $L_{2n, n}(x)$ reduces to the generating function of the numbers $T_{n,k}={1\over n}{n-1+k\choose n-1}{2n-k\choose n+1}$, which can be viewed as a refinement of the $3$-Catalan numbers $T_n=\frac{1}{2n+1}{3n\choose n}$. In this paper, we establish a correspondence between $12312$-avoiding partial matchings and lattice paths, and we show that the weighted count of such partial matchings with respect to the number of crossings …
In this paper we study the following problem. Let $A$ be a fixed graph, and let $\hom(G,A)$ denote the number of homomorphisms from a graph $G$ to $A$. Furthermore, let $v(G)$ denote the number of vertices of $G$, and let $\mathcal{G}_d$ denote the family of $d$--regular graphs. The general problem studied in this paper is to determine $$\inf_{G\in \mathcal{G}_d}\hom(G,A)^{1/v(G)}.$$ It turns out that in many instances the infimum is not achieved by a finite graph, but a sequence of graphs with girth (i. e., length of the shortest cycle) tending to infinity. In other words, the optimization pr…
This paper outlines a method to determine whether two label-regular directed trees, are isomorphic and when they are almost isomorphic. The approach involves reinterpreting label-regular directed trees as universal covers of rooted graphs. This allows us associate a unique graph with each isomorphism class of a label-regular directed tree. Additionally, by examining the graph monoid we can verify when two unfolding graphs produce almost isomorphic unfolding trees, thereby classifying unfolding trees up to almost isomorphism.
For $n$-vertex, $d$-dimensional lattices $Λ$ with $d \ge 2$, the number of spanning trees $N_{ST}(Λ)$ grows asymptotically as $\exp(n z_Λ)$ in the thermodynamic limit. We present an exact closed-form result for the asymptotic growth constant $z_{bcc(d)}$ for spanning trees on the $d$-dimensional body-centered cubic lattice. We also give an exact integral expression for $z_{fcc}$ on the face-centered cubic lattice and an exact closed-form expression for $z_{488}$ on the $4 \cdot 8 \cdot 8$ lattice.
In this paper, we present some new results describing connections between the spectrum of a regular graph and its generalized connectivity, toughness, and the existence of spanning trees with bounded degree.
Let T be a d-regular tree (d > 2) and A=Aut(T), its automorphism group. Let G be a group generated by n independent Haar-random elements of A. We show that almost surely, every nontrivial element of G has finitely many fixed points on T.
For a lattice $Λ$ with $n$ vertices and dimension $d$ equal or higher than two, the number of spanning trees $N_{ST}(Λ)$ grows asymptotically as $\exp(n z_Λ)$ in the thermodynamic limit. We present exact integral expressions for the asymptotic growth constant $z_Λ$ for spanning trees on several lattices. By taking different unit cells in the calculation, many integration identities can be obtained. We also give $z_{Λ(p)}$ on the homeomorphic expansion of $k$-regular lattices with $p$ vertices inserted on each edge.
We consider the problem of enumerating spanning trees on lattices. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the spanning tree generating function for a hypercubic lattice of size N_1 x N_2 x...x N_d in d dimensions under free, periodic, and a combination of free and periodic boundary conditions. Results are also obtained for a simple quartic net embedded on two non-orientable surfaces, a Moebius strip and the Klein bottle. Our results are based on the use of a formula expressing the spanning tree generating function in terms of the eigenvalues of an associated tree matrix. An elementary deriva…
Partially answering a question of Paul Seymour, we obtain a sufficient eigenvalue condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees in a regular graph, when $k\in \{2,3\}$. More precisely, we show that if the second largest eigenvalue of a $d$-regular graph $G$ is less than $d-\frac{2k-1}{d+1}$, then $G$ contains at least $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees, when $k\in \{2,3\}$. We construct examples of graphs that show our bounds are essentially best possible. We conjecture that the above statement is true for any $k<d/2$.
We continue our reformulation of free dendriform algebras, dealing this time with the free dendriform trialgebra generated be Y over planar rooted trees. We propose a 'deformation' of a vectorial coding used in Part I, giving a LL-lattice on rooted planar trees according to the terminology of A. Blass and B. E. Sagan. The three main operations on trees become explicit, giving thus a complementary approach to a very recent work of P. palacios and M. Ronco. Our parenthesis framework allows a more tractable reformulation to explore the properties of the underlying lattice describing operations an…
We study the set of critical exponents of discrete groups acting on regular trees. We prove that for every real number $δ$ between $0$ and $\frac{1}{2}\log q$, there is a discrete subgroup $Γ$ acting without inversion on a $(q+1)$-regular tree whose critical exponent is equal to $δ$. Explicit construction of edge-indexed graphs corresponding to a quotient graph of groups are given.
Let $k\ge 2$ be an integer and $T_1,\ldots, T_k$ be spanning trees of a graph $G$. If for any pair of vertices $(u,v)$ of $V(G)$, the paths from $u$ to $v$ in each $T_i$, $1\le i\le k$, do not contain common edges and common vertices, except the vertices $u$ and $v$, then $T_1,\ldots, T_k$ are completely independent spanning trees in $G$. For $2k$-regular graphs which are $2k$-connected, such as the Cartesian product of a complete graph of order $2k-1$ and a cycle and some Cartesian products of three cycles (for $k=3$), the maximum number of completely independent spanning trees contained in t…
The double integral representing the entropy S_{tri} of spanning trees on a large triangular lattice is evaluated using two different methods, one algebraic and one graphical. Both methods lead to the same result S_{tri} = [1/(2 Pi)]^2 \int_0^{2 Pi} dθ\int_0^{2 Pi} dϕln [6-2 cos(θ) - 2 cos(ϕ) -2 cos(θ+ϕ)] = [3(\sqrt 3)/Pi](1 - 5^{-2} + 7^{-2} - 11^{-2} + 13^{-2} - ...)
Shrock and Wu have given numerical values for the exponential growth rate of the number of spanning trees in Euclidean lattices. We give a new technique for numerical evaluation that gives much more precise values, together with rigorous bounds on the accuracy. In particular, the new values resolve one of their questions.
In this article, we study subword complexity of colorings of regular trees. We characterize colorings of bounded subword complexity and study Sturmian colorings, which are colorings of minimal unbounded subword complexity. We classify Sturmian colorings using their type sets. We show that any Sturmian coloring is a lifting of a coloring on a quotient graph of the tree which is a geodesic or a ray with loops possibly attached, thus a lifting of an "infinte word". We further give a complete characterization of the quotient graph for eventually periodic ones.
We present a proof of the power law decay of magnetic moment for the $q$-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the regular tree at the critical temperature, and also justify that the exact exponent is $\frac{1}{2}$. Our proof relies on the assumption of the uniqueness at the critical temperature, which has been established for $q=3,4$, and for $q \ge 5$ with large degree. An iterative contraction inequality is developed for independent interests.
Clustering algorithms for large networks typically use modularity values to test which partitions of the vertex set better represent structure in the data. The modularity of a graph is the maximum modularity of a partition. We consider the modularity of two kinds of graphs. For $r$-regular graphs with a given number of vertices, we investigate the minimum possible modularity, the typical modularity, and the maximum possible modularity. In particular, we see that for random cubic graphs the modularity is usually in the interval $(0.666, 0.804)$, and for random $r$-regular graphs with large $r$ …
