We show that under quite general conditions, various multifractal spectra may be obtained as Legendre transforms of functions $T\colon \RR\to \RR$ arising in the thermodynamic formalism. We impose minimal requirements on the maps we consider, and obtain partial results for any continuous map $f$ on a compact metric space. In order to obtain complete results, the primary hypothesis we require is that the functions $T$ be continuously differentiable. This makes rigorous the general paradigm of reducing questions regarding the multifractal formalism to questions regarding the thermodynamic formalism. These results hold for a broad class of measurable potentials, which includes (but is not limited to) continuous functions. We give applications that include most previously known results, as well as some new ones.
In the present work, we give a new {\it multifractal formalism} for which the classical multifractal formalism does not hold. We precisely introduce and study a multifractal formalism based on the Hewitt-Stromberg measures and that this formalism is completely parallel to Olsen's multifractal formalism which based on the Hausdorff and packing measures.
We establish an other upper bounding for packing dimension in the framework of the vectorial multifractal formalism that is in some cases finer than that established by J. Peyriere.
Multifractal analysis refers to the study of the local properties of measures and functions, and consists of two parts: the fine multifractal theory and the coarse multifractal theory. The fine and the coarse theory are linked by a web of conjectures known collectively as the Multifractal Formalism. Very roughly speaking the Multifractal Formalism says that the multifractal spectrum from fine theory equals the Legendre transform of the Renyi dimensions from the coarse theory. Recently {\it fine} multifractal zeta-functions, i.e. multifractal zeta-functions designed to produce detailed informat…
In this work, we investigate the Hölder spectrum of typical measures (in the Baire category sense) in a general compact set and we compute the multifractal spectrum of a typical measures supported by a self-similar set. Such mesures verify the multifractal formalism.
We first use Nevanlinna theory to provide full thermodynamical formalism for a very general class of meromorphic functions of finite order. Finer stochastic properties of the Perron-Frobenius operator are given and finally we provide the multifractal analysis of Gibbs states.
Most results in multifractal analysis are obtained using either a thermodynamic approach based on existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states or a saturation approach based on some version of the specification property. A general framework incorporating the most important multifractal spectra was introduced by Barreira and Saussol, who used the thermodynamic approach to establish the multifractal formalism in the uniformly hyperbolic setting, unifying many existing results. We extend this framework to apply to a broad class of non-uniformly hyperbolic systems, including examples with phase …
This article fits in many studies of multifractal analysis of measure. We took as a starting point the work of F. Ben Nasr in " Calculs de dimension de packing " to give a new inequality involving $Dim(\bar{X}^α)$ which would be, in certain cases, finer than the inequality established by L. Olsen in " A multifractal formalism " . Besides we elaborated an application of our result which gives a better inequality involving $Dim(\bar{X}^α)$.
Any Borel probability measure supported on a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure on the real line possesses a discrete inverse measure. We study the validity of the multifractal formalism for the inverse measures of random weak Gibbs measures supported on the attractor associated with some $C^1$ random dynamics encoded by a random subshift of finite type, and expanding in the mean. The study requires, in particular, to develop in this context of random dynamics a suitable extension of the results known for heterogeneous ubiquity associated with deterministic Gibbs measures.
We propose to study the multifractal behavior of weighted ergodic averages. Our study in this paper is concentrated on the symbolic dynamics. We introduce a thermodynamical formalism which leads to a multifractal spectrum. It is proved that this thermodynamical formalism applies to different kinds of dynamically defined weights, including stationary ergodic random weights, uniquely ergodic weights etc. But the validity of the thermodynamical formalism for very irregular weights, like Möbius function, is an unsolved problem. The paper ends with some other unsolved problems.
We refine the multifractal formalism for the local dimension of a Gibbs measure $μ$ supported on the attractor $Λ$ of a conformal iterated functions system on the real line. Namely, for given $α\in \mathbb{R}$, we establish the formalism for the Hausdorff dimension of level sets of points $x\inΛ$ for which the $μ$-measure of a ball of radius $r_{n}$ centered at $x$ obeys a power law $r_{n}{}^α$, for a sequence $r_{n}\rightarrow0$. This allows us to investigate the Hölder regularity of various fractal functions, such as distribution functions and conjugacy maps associated with conformal iterate…
For a positive measure set of nonuniformly expanding quadratic maps on the interval we effect a multifractal formalism, i.e., decompose the phase space into level sets of time averages of a given observable and consider the associated {\it Birkhoff spectrum} which encodes this decomposition. We derive a formula which relates the Hausdorff dimension of level sets to entropies and Lyapunov exponents of invariant probability measures, and then use this formula to show that the spectrum is continuous. In order to estimate the Hausdorff dimension from above, one has to "see" sufficiently many point…
It is known that all uniformly expanding or hyperbolic dynamics have no phase transition with respect to Hölder continuous potentials. In \cite{BC21}, is proved that for all transitive $C^{1+α}-$local diffeomorphism $f$ on the circle, that is neither a uniformly expanding map nor invertible, has a unique thermodynamic phase transition with respect to the geometric potential, in other words, the topological pressure function $\mathbb{R} \ni t \mapsto P_{top}(f,-t\log|Df|)$ is analytic except at a point $t_{0} \in (0 , 1]$. Also it is proved spectral phase transitions, in other words, the transf…
We consider the multifractal formalism for the dynamics of semigroups of rational maps on the Riemann sphere and random complex dynamical systems. We elaborate a multifractal analysis of level sets given by quotients of Birkhoff sums with respect to the skew product associated with a semigroup of rational maps. Applying these results, we perform a multifractal analysis of the Hölder regularity of limit state functions of random complex dynamical systems.
We prove a multifractal formalism for Birkhoff averages of continuous functions in the case of some non-uniformly hyperbolic maps, which includes interval examples such as the Manneville--Pomeau map.
Let $μ$ be a self-similar measure generated by an IFS $Φ=\{ϕ_i\}_{i=1}^\ell$ of similarities on $\mathbb R^d$ ($d\ge 1$). When $Φ$ is dimensional regular (see Definition~1.1), we give an explicit formula for the $L^q$-spectrum $τ_μ(q)$ of $μ$ over $[0,1]$, and show that $τ_μ$ is differentiable over $(0,1]$ and the multifractal formalism holds for $μ$ at any $α\in [τ_μ'(1),τ_μ'(0+)]$. We also verify the validity of the multifractal formalism of $μ$ over $[τ_μ'(\infty),τ_μ'(0+)]$ for two new classes of overlapping algebraic IFSs by showing that the asymptotically weak separation condition holds.…
The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of the multifractal Hewitt-Stromberg dimension functions under projections in Euclidean space. As an application, we study the multifractal analysis of the projections of a measure. In particular, we obtain general results for the multifractal analysis of the orthogonal projections on $m$-dimensional linear subspaces of a measure $μ$ satisfying the multifractal formalism which is based on the Hewitt-Stromberg measures.
In this article, we prove that in the Baire category sense, measures supported by the unit cube of $\R^d$ typically satisfy a multifractal formalism. To achieve this, we compute explicitly the multifractal spectrum of such typical measures $μ$. This spectrum appears to be linear with slope 1, starting from 0 at exponent 0, ending at dimension $d$ at exponent $d$, and it indeed coincides with the Legendre transform of the $L^q$-spectrum associated with typical measures $μ$.
The multifractal formalism for measures in its original formulation is checked for special classes of measures such as doubling, self-similar, and Gibbs-like ones. Out of these classes, suitable conditions should be taken into account to prove the validity of the multifractal formalism. In the present work, a large class of measures satisfying a weak condition known as quasi Ahlfors is considered in the framework of mixed multifractal analysis. A joint multifractal analysis of finitely many quasi Ahlfors probability measures is developed. Mixed variants of multifractal generalizations of Hausd…
We introduce a local multifractal formalism adapted to functions, measures or distributions which display multifractal characteristics that can change with time, or location. We develop this formalism in a general framework and we work out several examples of measures and functions where this setting is relevant.
In this paper we prove a multifractal formalism of Birkhoff averages for interval maps with countably many branches. Furthermore, we prove that under certain regularity assumptions on the potential the Birkhoff spectrum is real analytic. Applications of these results to number theory are also given. Finally, we compute the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points for which the Birkhoff average is infinite.
This survey article concerns inducing schemes in the context of interval maps. We explain how the study of these induced systems allows for the fine description of, not only, the thermodynamic formalism for certain multimodal maps, but also of its multifractal structure.
In this paper we investigate the multifractal decomposition of the limit set of a finitely generated, free Fuchsian group with respect to the mean cusp winding number. We will completely determine its multifractal spectrum by means of a certain free energy function and show that the Hausdorff dimension of sets consisting of limit points with the same scaling exponent coincides with the Legendre transform of this free energy function. As a by-product we generalise previously obtained results on the multifractal formalism for infinite iterated function systems to the setting of infinite graph di…
We give a description of the level sets in the higher dimensional multifractal formalism for infinite conformal graph directed Markov systems. If these systems possess a certain degree of regularity this description is complete in the sense that we identify all values with non-empty level sets and determine their Hausdorff dimension. This result is also partially new for the finite alphabet case.
We investigate multifractal regularity for infinite conformal iterated function systems (cIFS). That is we determine to what extent the multifractal spectrum depends continuously on the cIFS and its thermodynamic potential. For this we introduce the notion of regular convergence for families of cIFS not necessarily sharing the same index set, which guarantees the convergence of the multifractal spectra on the interior of their domain. In particular, we obtain an Exhausting Principle for infinite cIFS allowing us to carry over results for finite to infinite systems, and in this way to establish…
We study ergodic properties of certain piecewise smooth two-dimensional systems by constructing countable Markov partitions. Using thermodynamic formalism we prove exponential decay of correleations.
We introduce a higher-dimensional version of the nonlinear thermodynamic formalism introduced by Buzzi and Leplaideur, in which a potential is replaced by a family of potentials. In particular, we establish a corresponding variational principle and we discuss the existence, characterization, and number of equilibrium measures for this higher-dimensional version.
This paper is devoted to study how do thermodynamic formalism quantities varies for time changes of suspension flows defined over countable Markov shifts. We prove that in general no quantity is preserved. We also make a topological description of the space of suspension flows according to certain thermodynamic quantities. For example, we show that the set of suspension flows defined over the full shift on a countable alphabet having finite entropy is open. Of independent interest might be a set of analytic tools we use to construct examples with prescribed thermodynamic behaviour.
We study hyperbolic attractors of some dynamical systems with apriori given countable Markov partitions. Assuming that contraction is stronger than expansion we construct new Markov rectangles such that their crossections by unstable manifolds are Cantor sets of positive Lebesgue measure. Using new Markov partitions we develop thermodynamical formalism and prove exponential decay of correlations and related properties for certain Hölder functions. The results are based on the methods developed by Sarig.
We study the expansion properties of the contracting Lorenz flow introduced by Rovella via thermodynamic formalism. Specifically, we prove the existence of an equilibrium state for the natural potential $\hatϕ_t(x,y, z):=-t\log J_{(x, y, z)}^{cu}$ for the contracting Lorenz flow and for $t$ in an interval containing $[0,1]$. We also analyse the Lyapunov spectrum of the flow in terms of the pressure.
Working with well chosen Riemannian metrics and employing Nevanlinna's theory, we make the thermodynamical formalism work for a wide class of hyperbolic meromorphic functions of finite order (including in particular exponential family, elliptic functions, cosine, tangent and the cosine--root family and also compositions of these functions with arbitrary polynomials). In particular, the existence of conformal (Gibbs) measures is established and then the existence of probability invariant measures equivalent to conformal measures is proven. As a geometric consequence of the developed thermodynam…
We introduce a definition of pressure for almost-additive sequences of continuous functions defined over (non-compact) countable Markov shifts. The variational principle is proved. Under certain assumptions we prove the existence of Gibbs and equilibrium measures. Applications are given to the study of maximal Lypaunov exponents of product of matrices.
Skew product systems with monotone one-dimensional fibre maps driven by piecewise expanding Markov interval maps may show the phenomenon of intermingled basins. To quantify the degree of intermingledness the uncertainty exponent and the stability index were suggested by various authors and characterized (partially). Here we present an approach to evaluate/estimate these two quantities rigorously using thermodynamic formalism for the driving Markov map.
We study the thermodynamic formalism of locally compact Markov shifts with transient potential functions. In particular, we show that the Ruelle operator admits positive continuous eigenfunctions and positive Radon eigenmeasures in forms of Martin kernels. These eigenmeasures can be characterized in terms of the direction of escape to infinity of their orbits, when viewed inside a suitable Martin-like compactification of the underline shift space. We relate these results to first-order phase transitions in one-dimensional lattice gas models with infinite set of states. This work complements ea…
In this note we study the thermodynamic formalism for the positive geodesic flow on the modular surface. We define the pressure and prove the variational principle. We also establish conditions for the the pressure to be real analytic and for the potentials to have unique equilibrium states. The results in this paper were largely superceded by "Phase transitions for suspension flows" by Iommi and Jordan arXiv:1202.0849
Let $μ$ be the geometric realization on $[0,1]$ of a Gibbs measure on $Σ=\{0,1\}^{\mathbb{N}}$ associated with a Hölder potential. The thermodynamic and multifractal properties of $μ$ are well known to be linked via the multifractal formalism. In this article, the impact of a random sampling procedure on this structure is studied. More precisely, let $\{I_w\}_{w\in Σ^*}$ stand for the collection of dyadic subintervals of $[0,1]$ naturally indexed by the set of finite dyadic words $Σ^*$. Fix $η\in(0,1)$, and a sequence $(p_w)_{w\in Σ^*}$ of independent Bernoulli variables of parameters $2^{-|w|…
This text provides an overview of the (geometric) thermodynamic formalism for transcendental meromorphic and entire functions with particular emphasis on geometric/fractal aspects such as Bowen's Formula expressing the hyperbolic dimension as a unique zero of a pressure function and the behavior of the latter when the transcendental functions vary in an analytic family.
In this paper we study various fractal geometric aspects of the Minkowski question mark function $Q.$ We show that the unit interval can be written as the union of the three sets $Λ_{0}:=\{x:Q'(x)=0\}$, $Λ_{\infty}:=\{x:Q'(x)=\infty\}$, and $Λ_{\sim}:=\{x:Q'(x)$ does not exist and $Q'(x)\not=\infty\}.$ The main result is that the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets are related in the following way. $\dim_{H}(ν_{F})<\dim_{H}(Λ_{\sim})= \dim_{H} (Λ_{\infty}) = \dim_{H} (\mathcal{L}(h_{\mathrm{top}}))<\dim_{H}(Λ_{0})=1.$ Here, $\mathcal{L}(h_{\mathrm{top}})$ refers to the level set of the Stern-Br…
Let $(X,T)$ and $(Y,S)$ be two subshifts so that $Y$ is a factor of $X$. For any asymptotically sub-additive potential $Φ$ on $X$ and $\ba=(a,b)\in\R^2$ with $a>0$, $b\geq 0$, we introduce the notions of $\ba$-weighted topological pressure and $\ba$-weighted equilibrium state of $Φ$. We setup the weighted variational principle. In the case that $X, Y$ are full shifts with one-block factor map, we prove the uniqueness and Gibbs property of $\ba$-weighted equilibrium states for almost additive potentials having the bounded distortion properties. Extensions are given to the higher dimensional wei…
We develop a new thermodynamic formalism to investigate the transient behaviour of maps on the real line which are skew-periodic $\mathbb{Z}$-extensions of expanding interval maps. Our main focus lies in the dimensional analysis of the recurrent and transient sets as well as in determining the whole dimension spectrum with respect to $α$-escaping sets. Our results provide a one-dimensional model for the phenomenon of a dimension gap occurring for limit sets of Kleinian groups. In particular, we show that a dimension gap occurs if and only if we have non-zero drift and we are able to precisely …
This paper introduces a theory of Thermodynamic Formalism for Iterated Function Systems with Measures (IFSm). We study the spectral properties of the Transfer and Markov operators associated to a IFSm. We introduce variational formulations for the topological entropy of holonomic measures and the topological pressure of IFSm given by a potential. A definition of equilibrium state is then natural and we prove its existence for any continuous potential. We show, in this setting, a uniqueness result for the equilibrium state requiring only the Gâteaux differentiability of the pressure functional.
