We continue the program of classification of normal Q-acyclic surfaces defined over the field of complex numbers, so-called 'Q-homology planes'. Here we show that if a Q-homology plane has negative Kodaira dimension then its smooth locus is not of general type. This generalizes an earlier result of Koras-Russell for contractible surfaces.
A pair $(S,C)$ is called a singular $\mathbb{Q}$-homology plane pair if $S$ is a singular projective surface with only quotient singularities having the same rational homology as $\mathbb{p}^2$ and $C \subset S$ has the same rational homology as $\mathbb{p}^1$. We will prove results concerning smooth rational curves on $S$ and the singularities of $S$ such that $\overline κ(S^0)=1$ and $\overline κ(S-C) \neq -\infty$. We end with an example of such pairs.
We correct the proof and slightly strengthen a Kodaira-type vanishing theorem for singular varieties originally due to Jaffe and the first author. Specifically, we show that if $L$ is a nef and big line bundle on a projective variety of characteristic zero, the $i^{\text{th}}$ cohomology of $L^{-1}$ vanishes for $i$ in a range determined by the depth and dimension of the singular locus.
We consider singular Q-acyclic surfaces with smooth locus of non-general type. We prove that if the singularities are topologically rational then the smooth locus is C^1- or C*-ruled or the surface is up to isomorphism one of two exceptional surfaces of Kodaira dimension zero. For both exceptional surfaces the Kodaira dimension of the smooth locus is zero and the singular locus consists of a unique point of type A1 and A2 respectively. These surfaces can be constructed starting from two classical configurations of lines on the projective plane: the dual Hesse configuration and the complete qua…
This paper lays the foundation for determining the Kodaira dimension of the projectivized strata of Abelian differentials with prescribed zero and pole orders in large genus. We work with the moduli space of multi-scale differentials constructed in [BCGGM2] which provides an orbifold compactification of these strata. We establish the projectivity of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, describe the locus of canonical singularities, and compute a series of effective divisor classes. Moreover, we exhibit a perturbation of the canonical class which allows the corresponding pluri-canonic…
In this paper, we prove that the zero-locus of any global holomorphic log-one-form on a projective log-smooth pair $\left(X,D\right)$ of log-general type must be non-empty. Applying this result, we give an answer to the algebraic hyperbolicity part of Shafarevich's conjecture, with the generic fiber being Kawamata-log-terminal (klt) and of log-general type.
A Q-homology plane is a normal complex algebraic surface having trivial rational homology. We classify singular Q-homology planes which are C^1- or C*-ruled. We analyze their completions, the number of different rulings, the number of affine lines on it and we give constructions. Together with previously known results this completes the classification of Q-homology planes with smooth locus of non-general type. We show also that the dimension of a family of homeomorphic but non-isomorphic singular Q-homology planes having the same weighted boundary, singularities and Kodaira dimension can be ar…
This is the second of a series of papers where we study the plurigenera, the Kodaira dimension and the Iitaka dimension on compact almost complex manifolds. By using the pseudoholomorphic pluricanonical map, we define the second version of Kodaira dimension as well as Iitaka dimension on compact almost complex manifolds. We show the almost complex structures with the top Kodaira dimension are integrable. For compact almost complex 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension one, we obtain elliptic fibration like structural description. Some vanishing theorems in complex geometry are generalized to the …
Genus $g$ Torelli space is the moduli space of genus $g$ curves of compact type equipped with a homology framing. The hyperelliptic locus is a closed analytic subvariety consisting of finitely many mutually isomorphic components. We use properties of the hyperelliptic Torelli group to show that when $g\geq 3$ these components do not have the homotopy type of a finite CW complex. Specifically, we show that the second rational homology of each component is infinite-dimensional. We give a more detailed description of the topological features of these components when $g=3$ using properties of genu…
This note is a supplement to the papers: R. V. Gurjar, K. Masuda, M. Miyanishi and P. Russell, Affine lines on affine surfaces and the Makar-Limanov invariant, preprint, 2005, 42p. and T. Kishimoto and H. Kojima, Affine lines on {\bf Q}-homology planes with logarithmic Kodaira dimension $-\infty$, Transform. Groups 11 (2006), no. 4 (to appear). We show the role of group actions in classification of affine lines on {\bf Q}-homology planes.
We introduce and study the vanishing homology of singular projective hypersurfaces. We prove its concentration in two levels in case of 1-dimensional singular locus $Σ$, and moreover determine the ranks of the nontrivial homology groups. These two groups depend on the monodromy at special points of $Σ$ and on the effect of the monodromy of the local system over its complement.
A Q-homology plane is a normal complex algebraic surface having trivial rational homology. We obtain a structure theorem for Q-homology planes with smooth locus of non-general type. We show that if a Q-homology plane contains a non-quotient singularity then it is a quotient of an affine cone over a projective curve by an action of a finite group respecting the set of lines through the vertex. In particular, it is contractible, has negative Kodaira dimension and only one singular point. We describe minimal normal completions of such planes.
We study the behavior of cohomological support loci of the canonical bundle under derived equivalence of smooth projective varieties. This is achieved by investigating the derived invariance of a generalized version of Hochschild homology. Furthermore, using techniques coming from birational geometry, we establish the derived invariance of the Albanese dimension for varieties having non-negative Kodaira dimension. We apply our machinery to study the derived invariance of the holomorphic Euler characteristic and of certain Hodge numbers for special classes of varieties. Further applications con…
We extend to normal projective varieties defined over an arbitrary algebraically closed field a result of Ein, Lazarsfeld, Mustaţă, Nakamaye and Popa characterizing the augmented base locus (aka non-ample locus) of a line bundle on a smooth projective complex variety as the union of subvarieties on which the restricted volume vanishes. We also give a proof of the folklore fact that the complement of the augmented base locus is the largest open subset on which the Kodaira map defined by large and divisible multiples of the line bundle is an isomorphism.
The fundamental group $π$ of a Kodaira fibration is, by definition, the extension of a surface group $Π_b$ by another surface group $Π_g$, i.e. \[ 1 \rightarrow Π_g \rightarrow π\rightarrow Π_b \rightarrow 1. \] Conversely, we can inquire about what conditions need to be satisfied by a group of that sort in order to be the fundamental group of a Kodaira fibration. In this short note we collect some restriction on the image of the classifying map $m \colon Π_b \to Γ_g$ in terms of the coinvariant homology of $Π_g$. In particular, we observe that if $π$ is the fundamental group of a Kodaira fibr…
In a recent paper Chiodo and Farkas described the singular locus and the locus of non-canonical singularities of the moduli space of level curves. In this work we generalize their results to the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal R}_{g,G}$ of curves with a $G$-cover for any finite group $G$. We show that non-canonical singularities are of two types: $T$-curves, that is singularities lifted from the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal M}_g$ of stable curves, and $J$-curves, that is new singularities entirely characterized by the dual graph of the cover. Finally, we prove that in the case $G=S_3$, th…
We describe the singular locus of the compactification of the moduli space $R_{g,l}$ of curves of genus $g$ paired with an $l$-torsion point in their Jacobian. Generalising previous work for $l\le 2$, we also describe the sublocus of noncanonical singularities for any positive integer $l$. For $g\ge 4$ and $l=3,4, 6$, this allows us to provide a lifting result on pluricanonical forms playing an essential role in the computation of the Kodaira dimension of $R_{g,l}$: for those values of $l$, every pluricanonical form on the smooth locus of the moduli space extends to a desingularisation of the …
The main result is that a quasi-projective surface has negative log Kodaira dimension (i.e. no log pluricanonical sections) iff it is dominated by images of the affine line. This follows from our main intermediate result, that the smooth locus of a log Fano surface is rationally connected. We also give a classification of all but a bounded family of rank one log del Pezzo surfaces.
We make a very detailed analysis of the numerical properties of effective divisors whose support is contained in the exceptional locus of a birational morphism of smooth projective surfaces. As an application we extend Miyaoka's inequality on the number of canonical singularities on a projective normal surface with non-negative Kodaira dimension to the non minimal case, obtaining a slightly better result than known extensions by Megyesi and Langer.
We show $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{10,10}$ and $\mathcal{F}_{11,9}$ have Kodaira dimension zero. Our method relies on the construction of a number of curves via nodal Lefschetz pencils on blown-up $K3$ surfaces. The construction further yields that any effective divisor in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g}$ with slope $<6+(12-δ)/(g+1)$ must contain the locus of curves that are the normalization of a $δ$-nodal curve lying on a $K3$ surface of genus $g+δ$.
We study birational maps with empty base locus defined by almost complete intersection ideals. Birationality is shown to be expressed by the equality of two Chern numbers. We provide a relatively effective method of their calculation in terms of certain Hilbert coefficients. In dimension two the structure of the irreducible ideals leads naturally to the calculation of Sylvester determinants via a computer-assisted method. For degree at most 5 we produce the full set of defining equations of the base ideal. The results answer affirmatively some questions raised by D. Cox.

The goal of this paper is to propose a theory of mirror symmetry for varieties of general type. Using Landau-Ginzburg mirrors as motivation, we describe the mirror of a hypersurface of general type (and more generally varieties of non-negative Kodaira dimension) as the critical locus of the zero fibre of a certain Landau-Ginzburg potential. The critical locus carries a perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles. Our main results shows that one obtains the interchange of Hodge numbers expected in mirror symmetry. This exchange is between the Hodge numbers of the hypersurface and certain Hodge numbers d…
We study the monodromy of vanishing cycles for map-germs $f:(C^{2n},0) \to (\CM^k,0)$ whose components are in involution. Although the singular fibres of such maps have non-isolated singularities, it is shown that the regular fibres are $2(n-k)$-connected and that the vanishing homology group of rank $2(n-k)+1$ is freely generated by the vanishing cycles. As corollaries, we get that the multiplicity of the discriminant is equal to the dimension of the vanishing homology group of rank $2(n-k)+1$ and that the Variation operator is an isomorphism. These results are proved under two assumptions: 1…
In this article we use a theorem of Carlson and Griffiths and compute periods of linear algebraic cycles inside the Fermat variety of even dimension $n$ and degree $d$. As an application, for examples of $n$ and $d$ we prove that the locus of hypersurfaces containing two linear cycles whose intersection is of low dimension, is a reduced component of the Hodge locus in the underlying parameter space. We also check the same statement for hypersurfaces containing a complete intersection algebraic cycle. Our result confirms the Hodge conjecture for Hodge cycles obtained by the monodromy of the hom…
A section K on a genus g canonical curve C is identified as the key tool to prove new results on the geometry of the singular locus Theta_s of the theta divisor. The K divisor is characterized by the condition of linear dependence of a set of quadrics containing C and naturally associated to a degree g effective divisor on C. K counts the number of intersections of special varieties on the Jacobian torus defined in terms of Theta_s. It also identifies sections of line bundles on the moduli space of algebraic curves, closely related to the Mumford isomorphism, whose zero loci characterize speci…
We show that the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a hypersurface X in a nonsingular variety M `interpolates' between two other notions of characteristic classes for singular varieties, provided that the singular locus of X is smooth and that certain numerical invariants of X are constant along this locus. This allows us to define a lift of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of such `nice' hypersurfaces to intersection homology. As another application, the interpolation result leads to an explicit formula for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of X in terms of its polar classes.
In this paper we classify the topological invariants of the possible branch loci of a smooth double cover $f:X\rightarrow Y$ of a K3 surface $Y$. We describe some geometric properties of $X$ which depend on the properties of the branch locus. We give explicit examples of surfaces $X$ with Kodaira dimension 1 and 2 obtained as double cover of K3 surfaces and we describe some of them as bidouble cover of rational surfaces. Then, we classify the K3 surfaces which admit smooth double covers $X$ satisfying certain conditions; under these conditions the surface $X$ is of general type, $h^{1,0}(X)=0$…
Suppose that $f$ defines a singular, complex affine hypersurface. If the critical locus of $f$ is one-dimensional, we obtain new general bounds on the ranks of the homology groups of the Milnor fiber of $f$. This result has an interesting implication on the structure of the vanishing cycles in the category of perverse sheaves.
We prove the Lipman-Zariski conjecture for complex surface singularities of genus one, and also for those of genus two whose link is not a rational homology sphere. As an application, we characterize complex $2$-tori as the only normal compact complex surfaces whose smooth locus has trivial tangent bundle. We also deduce that all complex-projective surfaces with locally free and generically nef tangent sheaf are smooth, and we classify them.
For some positive integers $g$ and $n$ we consider a subgroup $\mathbb{G}_{g,n}$ of the $2g$-dimensional modular group keeping invariant a certain locus $\mathcal{W}_{g,n}$ in the Siegel upper half plane of degree $g$. We address the problem of describing a fundamental domain for the modular action of the subgroup on $\mathcal{W}_{g,n}$. Our motivation comes from geometry: $g$ and $n$ represent the genus and the number of ovals of a generic real Riemann surface of separated type; the locus $\mathcal{W}_{g,n}$ contains the corresponding period matrix computed with respect to some specific basis…
To the integral symplectic group Sp(2g,Z) we associate two posets of which we prove that they have the Cohen-Macaulay property. As an application we show that the locus of marked decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties in the Siegel space of genus g has the homotopy type of a bouquet of (g-2)-spheres. This, in turn, implies that the rational homology of moduli space of (unmarked) principal polarized abelian varieties of genus g modulo the decomposable ones vanishes in degree g-2 or lower. Another application is an improved stability range for the homology of the symplectic groups …
We prove an extension of the Kato-Saito class field theory for smooth projective schemes over a finite field to schemes with singularities. As an application, we obtain Bloch's formula for the Chow groups of 0-cycles on such schemes. We identify the Chow group of 0-cycles on a normal projective scheme over an algebraically closed field to the Suslin homology of its regular locus. Our final result is a Roitman torsion theorem for smooth quasi-projective schemes over algebraically closed fields. This completes the missing $p$-torsion part in the torsion theorem of Spiess and Szamuely.
Let $X$ be a simple normal crossing (SNC) compact complex surface with trivial canonical bundle which includes triple intersections. We prove that if $X$ is $d$-semistable, then there exists a family of smoothings in a differential geometric sense. This can be interpreted as a differential geometric analogue of the smoothability results due to Friedman, Kawamata-Namikawa, Felten-Filip-Ruddat, Chan-Leung-Ma, and others in algebraic geometry. The proof is based on an explicit construction of local smoothings around the singular locus of $X$, and the first author's existence result of holomorphic…
In this paper we compute the motivic Chern classes and homology Hirzebruch characteristic classes of (possibly singular) toric varieties, which in the complete case fit nicely with a generalized Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem. As special cases, we obtain new (or recover well-known) formulae for the Baum-Fulton-MacPherson Todd (or MacPherson-Chern) classes of toric varieties, as well as for the Thom-Milnor L-classes of simplicial projective toric varieties. We present two different perspectives for the computation of these characteristic classes of toric varieties. First, we take advantage of …
We call a projective surface $X$ mixed quasi-étale quotient if there exists a curve $C$ of genus $g(C)\geq 2$ and a finite group $G$ that acts on $C\times C$ exchanging the factors such that $X=(C\times C)/G$ and the map $C\times C \rightarrow X$ has finite branch locus. The minimal resolution of its singularities is called mixed quasi-étale surface. We study the mixed quasi-étale surfaces under the assumption that $(C\times C)/G^0$ has only nodes as singularities, where $G^0\triangleleft G$ is the index two subgroup of the elements that do not exchange the factors. We classify the minimal reg…
