We show that the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a hypersurface X in a nonsingular variety M `interpolates' between two other notions of characteristic classes for singular varieties, provided that the singular locus of X is smooth and that certain numerical invariants of X are constant along this locus. This allows us to define a lift of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of such `nice' hypersurfaces to intersection homology. As another application, the interpolation result leads to an explicit formula for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of X in terms of its polar classes.
On a general hypersurface of degree $d\leq n$ in $\mathbb P^n$ or $\mathbb P^n$ itself, we prove the existence of curves of any genus and high enough degree depending on the genus passing through the expected number $t$ of general points or incident to a general collection of subvarieties of suitable codimensions. In some cases we also show that the family of curves through $t$ fixed points has general moduli as family of $t$-pointed curves. These results imply positivity of certain intersection numbers on Kontsevich spaces of stable maps. An arithmetical appendix by M. C. Chang descibes the s…
We prove that square integrable holomorphic functions (with respect to a plurisubharmonic weight) can be extended in a square integrable manner from certain singular hypersurfaces (which include uniformly flat, normal crossing divisors) to entire functions in affine space. This provides evidence for a conjecture regarding the positivity of the curvature of the weight under consideration.
We establish birational superrigidity for a large class of singular projective Fano hypersurfaces of index one. In the special case of isolated singularities, our result applies for instance to: (1) hypersurfaces with semi-homogeneous singularities of multiplicity asymptotically bounded by twice the square root of the dimension of the hypersurface, (2) hypersurfaces with isolated singularities whose Tyurina numbers satisfy a similar bound, and (3) hypersurfaces with isolated singularities whose dual variety is a hypersurface of degree sufficiently close to the expected degree.
In this paper we present some properties for projective hypersurfaces, smooth and singular, to be criteria for identification. To make the decision with these criteria, we have included procedures written in Singular language.
In the spirit of a theorem of Wood, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a family of germs of analytic hypersurfaces in a smooth projective toric variety X to be interpolated by an algebraic hypersurface with a fixed class in the Picard group of X.
Suppose that $f$ defines a singular, complex affine hypersurface. If the critical locus of $f$ is one-dimensional, we obtain new general bounds on the ranks of the homology groups of the Milnor fiber of $f$. This result has an interesting implication on the structure of the vanishing cycles in the category of perverse sheaves.
We enumerate complex algebraic hypersurfaces in $P^n$, of a given (high) degree with one singular point of a given singularity type. Our approach is to compute the (co)homology classes of the corresponding equi-singular strata in the parameter space of hypersurfaces. We suggest an inductive procedure, based on intersection theory combined with liftings and degenerations. The procedure computes the (co)homology class in question, whenever a given singularity type is properly defined and the stratum possesses good geometric properties. We consider in details the generalized Newton-non-degenerate…
A (global) determinantal representation of hypersurface in P^n is a matrix, whose entries are linear forms in homogeneous coordinates and whose determinant defines the hypersurface. We study the properties of such representations for singular (possibly reducible or non-reduced) hypersurfaces. In particular, we obtain the decomposability criteria for determinantal representations of globally reducible hypersurfaces. Further, we classify the determinantal representations in terms of the corresponding kernel sheaves on $X$. Finally, we extend the results to the case of symmetric/self-adjoint repr…
Let V be a projective hypersurface of fixed degree and dimension which has only isolated singular points. We show that, if the sum of the Milnor numbers at the singular points of V is large, then V cannot have a point of large multiplicity, unless V is a cone. As an application, we give an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Dimca and Papadima.
For any algebraic scheme $X$ and every $(n,\mathscr{L})\in \mathbb{Z}\times \text{Pic}(X)$ we define an associated involution of its Chow group $A_*X$, and show that certain characteristic classes of (possibly singular) hypersurfaces in a smooth variety are interchanged via these involutions. For $X=\mathbb{P}^N$ we show that such involutions are induced by involutive correspondences.
We prove that a component of the closure of the set of star points on a hypersurface X of degree d>2 in N-dimensional projective space is linear. Afterwards, we focus on the case where the component is of maximal dimension N-2 and the case where X is a surface (i.e. N=3).
In this paper we classify three-dimensional singular cubic hypersurfaces with an action of a finite group $G$, which are not $G$-rational, are not $G$-birationally isomorphic to a quadric and have no birational structure of $G$-Mori fiber space with the base of positive dimension. Also we prove the $A_{5}$ -birational superrigidity of the Segre cubic.
We develop a version of Mikhalkin's lattice path algorithm for projective hypersurfaces of arbitrary degree and dimension, which enumerates singular tropical hypersurfaces passing through appropriate configuration of points. By proving a correspondence theorem combined with the lattice path algorithm, we construct a $δ$ dimensional linear space of degree $ d $ real hypersurfaces containing $\frac{1}{δ!} (γ_nd^n)^δ+ O(d^{nδ-1})$ hypersurfaces with $ δ$ real nodes, where $ γ_n $ are positive and given by a recursive formula. This is asymptotically comparable to the number $ \frac{1}{δ!} \left( (…
The purpose of this paper is to point out a relation between the canonical sheaf and the intersection complex of a singular algebraic variety. We focus on the hypersurface case. Let $M$ be a complex manifold, $X\subset M$ a singular hypersurface. We study residues of top-dimensional meromorphic forms with poles along $X$. Applying resolution of singularities sometimes we are able to construct residue classes either in $L^2$-cohomology of $X$ or in the intersection cohomology. The conditions allowing to construct these classes coincide. They can be formulated in terms of the weight filtration. …
We classify all generalized del Pezzo surfaces (i.e., minimal desingularizations of singular del Pezzo surfaces containing only rational double points) whose universal torsors are open subsets of hypersurfaces in affine space. Equivalently, their Cox rings are polynomial rings with exactly one relation. For all 30 types with this property, we describe the Cox rings in detail. These explicit descriptions can be applied to study Manin's conjecture on the asymptotic behavior of the number of rational points of bounded height for singular del Pezzo surfaces, using the universal torsor method.
For a Zariski general (regular) hypersurface $V$ of degree $M$ in the $(M+1)$-dimensional projective space, where $M$ is at least 16, with at most quadratic singularities of rank at least 13, we give a complete description of the structures of rationally connected (or Fano-Mori) fibre space: every such structure over a positive-dimensional base is a pencil of hyperplane sections. This implies, in particular, that $V$ is non-rational and its groups of birational and biregular automorphisms coincide. The set of non-regular hypersurfaces has codimension at least $\frac12(M-11)(M-10)-10$ in the na…
The paper is motivated on the open problem of resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. The aim is to present a form of induction which is different from that used by Hironaka. In characteristic zero induction is formulated by restriction to smooth hypersurfaces (hypersurfaces of maximal contact). Our alternative approach, introduced here, replaces restrictions to smooth sub-schemes by generic projections on smooth schemes of smaller dimension. We also introduce a generalization of the discriminant, and our result makes use of the elimination theory. In the case of fields of char…
We introduce spectral Hirzebruch-Milnor classes for singular hypersurfaces. These can be identified with Steenbrink spectra in the isolated singularity case, and may be viewed as their global analogues in general. Their definition uses vanishing cycles of mixed Hodge modules and the Todd class transformation. These are compatible with the pushforward by proper morphisms, and the classes can be calculated by using resolutions of singularities. Formulas for Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of projective hypersurfaces in terms of these classes are given in the case where the multiplicity of a generic hy…
The Eckardt hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{19}$ parameterizes smooth cubic surfaces with an Eckardt point, which is a point common to three of the $27$ lines on a smooth cubic surface. We describe the cubic surfaces lying on the singular locus of the model of this hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^4$, obtained via restriction to the space of cubic surfaces possessing a so-called Sylvester form. We prove that inside the moduli of cubics, the singular locus corresponds to a reducible surface with two rational irreducible components intersecting along two rational curves. The two curves intersect in two …
This paper continues our researches \cite{DS1, DS2, DS3} by computing some invariants based on Hilbert-Poincaré series associated to Milnor algebras. Our computations are for some of the classical surfaces and 3-folds with different configurations of isolated singularities. As a by-product of a recent result of E. Sernesi, we give examples of classical hypersurfaces which are (or are not) projectively rigid. We also include a Singular program to compute the invariants and to decide if a singular projective hypersurface is nodal and projectively rigid.
We show that the singular loci of graph hypersurfaces correspond set-theoretically to their rank loci. The proof holds for all configuration hypersurfaces and depends only on linear algebra. To make the conclusion for the second graph hypersurface, we prove that the second graph polynomial is a configuration polynomial. The result indicates that there may be a fruitful interplay between the current research in graph hypersurfaces and Stratified Morse Theory.
We survey a number of results on the counting of points on hypersurfaces defined over finite fields. We also investigate when one can be guaranteed a non-singular point on a projective hypersurface and give a condition on the cardinality of the ambient field to achieve this.
We study the notion of singular tropical hypersurfaces of any dimension. We characterize the singular points in terms of tropical Euler derivatives and we give an algorithm to compute all singular points. We also describe non-transversal intersection points of planar tropical curves.
Given a smooth projective variety of dimension $n-1\geq 1$ defined over a perfect field $k$ that admits a non-singular hypersurface modelin $\mathbb{P}^n_{\overline{k}}$ over $\overline{k}$, a fixed algebraic closure of $k$, it does not necessarily have a non-singular hypersurface model defined over the base field $k$. We first show an example of such phenomenon: a variety defined over $k$ admitting non-singular hypersurface models but none defined over $k$. We also determine under which conditions a non-singular hypersurface model over $k$ may exist. Now, even assuming that such a smooth hype…
This paper establishes the conjecture that a non-singular projective hypersurface of dimension $r$, which is not equal to a linear space, contains $O(B^{r+ε})$ rational points of height at most $B$, for any choice of $ε>0$. The implied constant in this estimate depends at most upon $ε, r$ and the degree of the hypersurface.
In this paper the singular hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^4$ of degree $d$ with an isolated singularity are studied. If the singularity is of type $A_{2k+1}$, under the condition $d<(k+5)/2$, a classification of such hypersurfaces upto homeomorphism (which is diffeomorphism on the nonsingular part) is obtained. As an application, cubic hypersurfaces with an $A_5$-singularity are constructed.
In this paper, necessary and sufficient criteria for the Jacobian ideal of a reduced hypersurface with isolated singularity to be of linear type, are presented. We prove that the gradient ideal of a reduced projective plane curve with simple singularities ($\mathrm{ADE}$) is of linear type. We show that any reduced projective quartic curve is of gradient linear type.
The aim of this fisrt part is to introduce, for a rather large class of hypersurface singularities with 1 dimensionnal locus, the analog of the Brieskorn lattice at the origin (the singular point of the singular locus). The main results are the finitness theorem for the corresponding (a,b)-module obtained via Kashiwara's constructibility theorem, and non torsion results for a plane curve singularity (not nessarily reduced) and for the suspension of such non torsion cases with an isolated singularity.
We introduce and study the vanishing homology of singular projective hypersurfaces. We prove its concentration in two levels in case of 1-dimensional singular locus $Σ$, and moreover determine the ranks of the nontrivial homology groups. These two groups depend on the monodromy at special points of $Σ$ and on the effect of the monodromy of the local system over its complement.
We prove that the rational cohomology of the space of non-singular complex homogeneous polynomials of degree d in a fixed number of variables stabilizes to the cohomology of the general linear group for d sufficiently large.
Gómez-Mont, Seade and Verjovsky introduced an index, now called GSV-index, generalizing the Poincaré-Hopf index to complex vector fields tangent to singular hypersurfaces. The GSV-index extends to the real case. This is a survey paper on the joint research with Gómez-Mont and Giraldo about calculating the GSV-index $\Ind_{V_\pm,0}(X)$ of a real vector field $X$ tangent to a singular hypersurface $V=f^{-1}(0)$. The index $\Ind_{V_{\pm,0}}(X)$ is calculated as a combination of several terms. Each term is given as a signature of some bilinear form on a local algebra associated to $f$ and $X$. Mai…
We prove a simple formula for MacPherson's Chern class of hypersurfaces in nonsingular varieties. The result highlights the relation between MacPherson's class and other definitions of homology Chern classes of singular varieties, such as Mather's Chern class and a class introduced by W. Fulton.
In $L^2$ extension theorems from a singular hypersurface in a complex manifold, important roles are played by certain measures such as the Ohsawa measure which determine when a given function can be extended. We show that the singularity of the Ohsawa measure can be identified in terms of singularity of pairs from algebraic geometry. Using this, we give an analytic proof of the inversion of adjunction in this setting. Then these considerations enable us to compare various positive and negative results on $L^2$ extension from singular hypersurfaces. In particular, we generalize a recent negativ…
A relation is proved between the Poincaré series of the coordinate algebra of a two-dimensional quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularity and the characteristic polynomial of its monodromy operator. For a Kleinian singularity not of type $A_{2n}$, this amounts to the statement that the Poincaré series is the quotient of the characteristic polynomial of the Coxeter element by the characteristic polynomial of the affine Coxeter element of the corresponding root system. We show that this result also follows from the McKay correspondence.
The homotopy group $π_{n-k} ({\bf C}^{n+1}-V)$ where $V$ is a hypersurface with a singular locus of dimension $k$ and good behavior at infinity is described using generic pencils. This is analogous to the van Kampen procedure for finding a fundamental group of a plane curve. In addition we use a certain representation generalizing the Burau representation of the braid group. A divisibility theorem is proven that shows the dependence of this homotopy group on the local type of singularities and behavior at infinity. Examples are given showing that this group depends on certain global data in ad…
Hypersurface simple K3 singularities defined by nondegenerate quasi-homogeneous polynomials are classified into ninety five classes in term of the weight of the polynomial by T. Yonemura. We consider versal deformations of them. It has been conjectured that the stratum $μ$ =const of the versal deformation of any nondegenerate hypersurface simple K3 singularity is equivalent to the $δ_m$ constant locus. It holds true for the case deformations are also nondegenerate by K. Watanabe. On the other hand, it follows from Reid that the $δ_m$ constant locus includes the $μ$ constant locus generally. We…
Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ be a non-singular hypersurface of degree $d>1$, and let $ε>0$. This paper is concerned with the conjecture that there are $O(B^{n-1+ε})$ rational points on $X$ that have height at most $B$, in which the implied constant is allowed to depend only upon $d, ε$ and $n$. In particular this conjecture is shown to hold as soon as $d>4$. Furthermore, the main ideas in the proof are used to obtain new paucity estimates for certain diophantine equations.
Assume that there exists a hypersurface singularity which cannot be resolved by iterated monoidal transformations in positive characteristic. We show that in the set of defining functions of hypersurface singularities which cannot be resolved, we can find a function satisfying very strong conditions. By these conditions we may be able to deduce a contradiction under the above assumption. Besides, we introduce fundamental concepts for the study of resolution of singularities of germs such as space germs, iterated analytic monoidal transforms with a normal crossing, Weierstrass representations, …
In this paper we obtain an explicit formula for the number of hypersurfaces in a compact complex manifold X (passing through the right number of points), that has a simple node, a cusp or a tacnode. The hypersurfaces belong to a linear system, which is obtained by considering a holomorphic line bundle L over X. Our main tool is a classical fact from differential topology: the number of zeros of a generic smooth section of a vector bundle V over M, counted with a sign, is the Euler class of V evaluated on the fundamental class of M.
The main purpose of this article is to lay the foundations for a classification of isolated hypersurface singularities in positive characteristic. Although our article is in the spirit of Arnol'd who classified real an complex hypersurfaces in the 1970's with respect to right equivalence, several new phenomena occur in positive characteristic. Already the notion of isolated singularity is different for right resp. contact equivalence over fields of characteristic other than zero. The heart of this paper consists of the study of different notions of non-degeneracy and the associated piecewise f…
