Let the matching polynomial of a graph $G$ be denoted by $μ(G,x)$. A graph $G$ is said to be $θ$-super positive if $μ(G,θ)\neq 0$ and $μ(G\setminus v,θ)=0$ for all $v\in V(G)$. In particular, $G$ is 0-super positive if and only if $G$ has a perfect matching. While much is known about 0-super positive graphs, almost nothing is known about $θ$-super positive graphs for $θ\not = 0$. This motivates us to investigate the structure of $θ$-super positive graphs in this paper. Though a 0-super positive graph may not contain any cycle, we show that a $θ$-super positive graph with $θ\not = 0$ must contain a cycle. We introduce two important types of $θ$-super positive graphs, namely $θ$-elementary and $θ$-base graphs. One of our main results is that any $θ$-super positive graph $G$ can be constructed by adding certain type of edges to a disjoint union of $θ$-base graphs; moreover, these $θ$-base graphs are uniquely determined by $G$. We also give a characterization of $θ$-elementary graphs: a graph $G$ is $θ$-elementary if and only if the set of all its $θ$-barrier sets form a partition of $V(G)$. Here, $θ$-elementary graphs and $θ$-barrier sets can be regarded as $θ$-analogue of elementary graphs and Tutte sets in classical matching theory.
Rubei et. al., established results for the distance matrix of positive weighted Petersen graphs. Focusing on the properties of the distance matrix, we generalized positive weighted Petersen graphs results to Kneser graphs. We analyzed theorems established by Rubei et al. and used girth of the generalized Petersen graphs and Kneser graphs to conclude generalizations. Further, we examined the properties of positive weighted generalized Petersen graphs. We generalized the properties of distance matrices of positive weighted Petersen graphs to positive weighted generalized Petersen graphs.
A mixed graph is obtained by orienting some edges of a simple graph. The positive inertia index of a mixed graph is defined as the number of positive eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix, including multiplicities. This matrix was introduced by Liu and Li, independently by Guo and Mohar, in the study of graph energy. Recently, Yuan et al. characterized the mixed graphs with exactly one positive eigenvalue. In this paper, we study the positive inertia indices of mixed graphs and characterize the mixed graphs with cut vertices having positive inertia index 2.
In the mid-1990s, Stanley and Stembridge conjectured that the chromatic symmetric functions of claw-free co-comparability (also called incomparability) graphs were e-positive. The quest for the proof of this conjecture has led to an examination of other, related graph classes. In 2013 Guay-Paquet proved that if unit interval graphs are e-positive, that implies claw-free incomparability graphs are as well. Inspired by this approach, we consider a related case and prove that unit interval graphs whose complement is also a unit interval graph are e-positive. We introduce the concept of strongly $…
In 1977 Smith characterized graphs with exactly one positive eigenvalue. Since then, many particular results related to graphs with exactly two positive eigenvalues have emerged. In this paper we conclude this investigation by giving a full characterization of these graphs.
The number of the positive, negative and zero eigenvalues in the spectrum of the (edge)-weighted graph $G$ are called positive inertia index, negative inertia index and nullity of the weighted graph $G$, and denoted by $i_+(G)$, $i_-(G)$, $i_0(G)$, respectively. In this paper, the positive and negative inertia index of weighted trees, weighted unicyclic graphs and weighted bicyclic graphs are discussed, the methods of calculating them are obtained.
We present some graphical characterizations of positive definite symmetric quasi-Cartan matrices of Dynkin type $\mathbb{A}_{n}$ and $\mathbb{D}_{n}$. Our proofs are constructive, purely graph theoretical, and almost self-contained in the sense that they rely on the classical inflations method only.

A real symmetric matrix $A$ is said to be completely positive if it can be written as $BB^t$ for some (not necessarily square) nonnegative matrix $B$. A simple graph $G$ is called a completely positive graph if every doubly nonnegative matrix realization of $G$ is a completely positive matrix. Our aim in this manuscript is to compute the determinant and inverse (when it exists) of the distance matrix of a class of completely positive graphs. Similar to trees, we obtain a relation for the inverse of the distance matrix of a class of completely positive graphs involving the Laplacian matrix, a r…
We study "positive" graphs that have a nonnegative homomorphism number into every edge-weighted graph (where the edgeweights may be negative). We conjecture that all positive graphs can be obtained by taking two copies of an arbitrary simple graph and gluing them together along an independent set of nodes. We prove the conjecture for various classes of graphs including all trees. We prove a number of properties of positive graphs, including the fact that they have a homomorphic image which has at least half the original number of nodes but in which every edge has an even number of pre-images. …
Dual equivalence graphs are a powerful tool in symmetric function theory that provide a general framework for proving that a given quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur positive. In this paper, we study a larger family of graphs that includes dual equivalence graphs and define maps that, in certain cases, transform graphs in this larger family into dual equivalence graphs. This allows us to broaden the applications of dual equivalence graphs and points the way toward a broader theory that could solve many important, long-standing Schur positivity problems.
Zero forcing is a process on a graph that colors vertices blue by starting with some of the vertices blue and applying a color change rule. Throttling minimizes the sum of the size of the initial blue vertex set and the number of the time steps needed to color the graph. We study throttling for positive semidefinite zero forcing. We establish a tight lower bound on the positive semidefinite throttling number as a function of the order, maximum degree, and positive semidefinite zero forcing number of the graph, and determine the positive semidefinite throttling numbers of paths, cycles, and ful…
We show that if a planar graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $3$ has positive Lin-Lu-Yau Ricci curvature on every edge, then $Δ(G)\leq 17$, which then implies that $G$ is finite. This is an analogue of a result of DeVos and Mohar [{\em Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 2007}] on the size of planar graphs with positive combinatorial curvature.
Zero forcing parameters, associated with graphs, have been studied for over a decade, and have gained popularity as the number of related applications grows. In particular, it is well-known that such parameters are related to certain vertex coverings. Continuing along these lines, we investigate positive zero forcing within the context of certain clique coverings. A key object considered here is the compressed cliques graph. We study a number of properties associated with the compressed cliques graph, including: uniqueness, forbidden subgraphs, connections to Johnson graphs, and positive zero …
We prove Gebhard and Sagan's $(e)$-positivity of the line graphs of tadpoles in noncommuting variables. This implies the $e$-positivity of these line graphs. We then extend this $(e)$-positivity result to that of certain cycle-chord graphs, and derive the bivariate generating function of all cycle-chord graphs.
The eccentricity (anti-adjacency) matrix $\varepsilon(G)$ of a graph $G$ is obtained from the distance matrix by retaining the eccentricities in each row and each column. This matrix is first defined in 2018 by Wang et al. \cite{1}. In this paper we have characterized the graphs which have at most one (hence exactly) positive eigenvalue of $\varepsilon(G)$.
The inertia of a graph $G$ is defined to be the triplet $In(G) = (p(G), n(G), $ $η(G))$, where $p(G)$, $n(G)$ and $η(G)$ are the numbers of positive, negative and zero eigenvalues (including multiplicities) of the adjacency matrix $A(G)$, respectively. Traditionally $p(G)$ (resp. $n(G)$) is called the positive (resp. negative) inertia index of $G$. In this paper, we introduce three types of congruent transformations for graphs that keep the positive inertia index and negative inertia index. By using these congruent transformations, we determine all graphs with exactly two positive eigenvalues …
In 1974 Cvetković and Simić showed which graphs $G$ are the bipartite complements of line graphs. In 2002 Borovićanin showed which line graphs $L(H)$ have third largest eigenvalue $λ_3\leq0$. Our first observation is that two of the graphs Borovićanin found are the complements of two of the graphs found by Cvetković and Simić. Using the Courant-Weyl inequalities we show why this is and reprove the result of Borovićanin, highlighting some features of the graphs found by both.
The proper divisor graph $Υ_n$ of a positive integer $n$ is the simple graph whose vertices are the proper divisors of $n$, and in which two distinct vertices $u, v$ are adjacent if and only if $n$ divides $uv$. The graph $Υ_n$ plays an important role in the study of the zero divisor graph of the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$. In this paper, we study some graph theoretic properties of $Υ_n$ and determine the graph parameters such as clique number, chromatic number, chromatic index, independence number, matching number, domination number, vertex and edge covering numbers of $Υ_n$. We also determine the a…
A signed graph is a graph whose edges are labelled positive or negative. The sign of a circle (cycle, circuit) is the product of the signs of its edges. Most of the essential properties of a signed graph depend on the signs of its circles. Here I describe several questions regarding negative circles and their cousins the positive circles. Topics include incidence between signed circles and edges or vertices, characterizing signed graphs with special circle properties, counting negative circles, signed-circle packing and covering, signed circles and eigenvalues, and directed cycles in signed di…
The positive zero forcing number of a graph is a graph parameter that arises from a non-traditional type of graph colouring, and is related to a more conventional version of zero forcing. We establish a relation between the zero forcing and the fast-mixed searching, which implies some NP-completeness results for the zero forcing problem. For chordal graphs much is understood regarding the relationships between positive zero forcing and clique coverings. Building upon constructions associated with optimal tree covers and forest covers, we present a linear time algorithm for computing the positi…
A well known upper bound for the spectral radius of a graph, due to Hong, is that $μ_1^2 \le 2m - n + 1$. It is conjectured that for connected graphs $n - 1 \le s^+ \le 2m - n + 1$, where $s^+$ denotes the sum of the squares of the positive eigenvalues. The conjecture is proved for various classes of graphs, including bipartite, regular, complete $q$-partite, hyper-energetic, and barbell graphs. Various searches have found no counter-examples. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the apparent difficulties of proving the conjecture in general.
Motivated by the study of Macdonald polynomials, J. Haglund and A. Wilson introduced a nonsymmetric polynomial analogue of the chromatic quasisymmetric function called the \emph{chromatic nonsymmetric polynomial} of a Dyck graph. We give a positive expansion for this polynomial in the basis of fundamental slide polynomials using recent work of Assaf-Bergeron on flagged $(P,ρ)$-partitions. We then derive the known expansion for the chromatic quasisymmetric function of Dyck graphs in terms of Gessel's fundamental basis by taking a backstable limit of our expansion.
Camarena, Csóka, Hubai, Lippner, and Lovász introduced the notion of positive graphs. This notion naturally extends to $r$-uniform hypergraphs. In the case when $r$ is odd, we prove that a hypergraph is positive if and only if its Levi graph is positive. As an application, we show that the $1$-subdivision of $K_{r,r}$ is not a positive graph when $r$ is odd.
Let $G$ be a graph and let $A(G)$ be adjacency matrix of $G$.The positive inertia index (respectively, the negative inertia index) of $G$, denoted by $p(G)$ (respectively, $n(G)$), is defined to be the number of positive eigenvalues (respectively, negative eigenvalues) of $A(G)$. In this paper, we present the bounds for $p(G)$ and $n(G)$ as follows: $$m(G)-c(G)\leq p(G)\leq m(G)+c(G), \ m(G)-c(G)\leq n(G)\leq m(G)+c(G),$$ where $m(G)$ and $c(G)$ are respectively the matching number and the cyclomatic number of $G$. Furthermore, we characterize the graphs which attain the upper bounds or the lo…
A mixed graph $\widetilde{G}$ is obtained by orienting some edges of $G$, where $G$ is the underlying graph of $\widetilde{G}$. The positive inertia index, denoted by $p^{+}(G)$, and the negative inertia index, denoted by $n^{-}(G)$, of a mixed graph $\widetilde{G}$ are the integers specifying the numbers of positive and negative eigenvalues of the Hermitian adjacent matrix of $\widetilde{G}$, respectively. In this paper, we study the positive and negative inertia index of the mixed unicyclic graph. Moreover, we give the upper and lower bounds of the positive and negative inertia index of the …
For any simple graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, the (positive semi-definite) minimum rank of $G$ is defined to be the smallest possible rank among all (positive semi-definite) real symmetric $n\times n$ matrices whose entry in position $(i,j)$, for $i\neq j$, is non-zero if $ij$ is an edge in $G$ and zero otherwise. Also, the (positive semi-definite) maximum nullity of $G$ is defined to be the largest possible nullity of a (positive semi-definite) matrix in the above set of matrices. In this thesis we study two graph parameters, namely the zero forcing number of $G$, $Z(G)$, and the positive zero fo…
A planar PCC graph is a simple connected planar graph with everywhere positive combinatorial curvature which is not a prism or an antiprism and with all vertices of degree at least 3. We prove that every planar PCC graph has at most 208 vertices, thus answering completely a question raised by DeVos and Mohar. The proof is based on a refined discharging technique and on an accurate low-scale combinatorical description of such graphs. We also prove that all faces in a planar PCC graph have at most 41 sides, and this result is sharp as well.
The zero forcing number and the positive zero forcing number of a graph are two graph parameters that arise from two types of graph colourings. The zero forcing number is an upper bound on the minimum number of induced paths in the graph, while the positive zero forcing number is an upper bound on the minimum number of induced trees in the graph. We show that for a block-cycle graph the zero forcing number equals the path cover number. We also give a purely graph theoretical proof that the positive zero forcing number of any outerplanar graphs equals the tree cover number of the graph. These i…
We define a D_0 graph to be a graph whose vertex set is a subset of permutations of n, with edges of the form ...bac... <--> ...bca... or ...acb... <--> ...cab... (Knuth transformations), or ...bac... <--> ...acb... or ...bca... <--> ...cab... (rotation transformations), such that whenever the Knuth and rotation transformations at positions i-1, i, i+1 are available at a vertex, exactly one of these is an edge. The generating function of such a graph is the sum of the quasisymmetric functions associated to the descent sets of its vertices. Assaf studied D_0 graphs in the paper *Dual equivalenc…
For a simple graph $G=(V,E),$ let $\mathcal{S}_+(G)$ denote the set of real positive semidefinite matrices $A=(a_{ij})$ such that $a_{ij}\neq 0$ if $\{i,j\}\in E$ and $a_{ij}=0$ if $\{i,j\}\notin E$. The maximum positive semidefinite nullity of $G$, denoted $\operatorname{M}_+(G),$ is $\max\{\operatorname{null}(A)|A\in \mathcal{S}_+(G)\}.$ A tree cover of $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint simple trees occurring as induced subgraphs of $G$ that cover all the vertices of $G$. The tree cover number of $G$, denoted $T(G)$, is the cardinality of a minimum tree cover. It is known that the tree …
Terpai [22] proved the Nordhaus-Gaddum bound that $μ(G) + μ(\overline{G}) \le 4n/3 - 1$, where $μ(G)$ is the spectral radius of a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices. Let $s^+$ denote the sum of the squares of the positive eigenvalues of $G$. We prove that $\sqrt{s^{+}(G)} + \sqrt{s^+(\overline{G})} < \sqrt{2}n$ and conjecture that $\sqrt{s^{+}(G)} + \sqrt{s^+(\overline{G})} \le 4n/3 - 1.$ We have used AutoGraphiX and Wolfram Mathematica to search for a counter-example. We also consider Nordhaus-Gaddum bounds for $s^+$ and bounds for the Randić index.
Let ${\cal G}=(G,w) $ be a positive-weighted graph, that is a graph $G$ endowed with a function $w$ from the edge set of $G$ to the set of positive real numbers; for any distinct vertices $i,j $, we define $D_{i,j}({\cal G})$ to be the weight of the path in $G$ joining $i$ and $j$ with minimum weight. In this paper we fix a particular class of graphs and we give a criterion to establish whether, given a family of positive real numbers $\{D_I\}_{I \in { \{1,...., n\} \choose 2}}$, there exists a positive-weighted graph ${\cal G} =(G,w) $ in the class we have fixed, with vertex set equal to $\{1…
Let $G_w$ be a weighted graph. The number of the positive, negative and zero eigenvalues in the spectrum of $G_w$ are called positive inertia index, negative inertia index and nullity of $G_w$, and denoted by $i_{+}(G_w)$, $i_{-}(G_w)$, $i_{0}(G_w)$, respectively. In this paper, sharp lower bound on the positive (resp. negative) inertia index of weighted bicyclic graphs of order $n$ with pendant vertices is obtained. Moreover, all the weighted bicyclic graphs of order $n$ with at most two positive, two negative and at least $n-4$ zero eigenvalues are identified, respectively.
A \textit{signed graph} is a simple graph whose edges are labelled with positive or negative signs. A cycle is \textit{positive} if the product of its edge signs is positive. A signed graph is \textit{balanced} if every cycle in the graph is positive. The \textit{frustration index} of a signed graph is the minimum number of edges whose deletion makes the graph balanced. The \textit{maximum frustration} of a graph is the maximum frustration index over all sign labellings. In this paper, first, we prove that the maximum frustration of generalized Petersen graphs $P_{n,k}$ is bounded above by $\l…
The \emph{minimum positive co-degree} $δ^{+}_{r-1}(H)$ of a non-empty $r$-graph $H$ is the maximum $k$ such that if $S$ is an $(r-1)$-set contained in a hyperedge of $H$, then $S$ is contained in at least $k$ hyperedges of $H$. For any $r$-graph $F$, the \emph{positive degree Turán number} $\mathrm{co}^{+}\mathrm{ex}(n,F)$ is defined as the maximum value of $δ^{+}_{r-1}(H)$ over all $n$-vertex $F$-free non-empty $r$-graphs $H$. In this paper, we determine the positive degree Turán number for $C_5$ and $C_5^{-}$.
The paper designs five graph operations, and proves that every signed graph with chromatic number $q$ can be obtained from all-positive complete graphs $(K_q,+)$ by repeatedly applying these operations. This result gives a signed version of the Hajós theorem, emphasizing the role of all-positive complete graphs played in the class of signed graphs, as played in the class of unsigned graphs.
We prove that the chromatic symmetric function of any $n$-vertex tree containing a vertex of degree $d\geq \log _2n +1$ is not $e$-positive, that is, not a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric functions. Generalizing this, we also prove that the chromatic symmetric function of any $n$-vertex connected graph containing a cut vertex whose deletion disconnects the graph into $d\geq\log _2n +1$ connected components is not $e$-positive. Furthermore we prove that any $n$-vertex bipartite graph, including all trees, containing a vertex of degree greater than $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil$ …
Let $G_w$ be a weighted graph. The \textit{inertia} of $G_w$ is the triple $In(G_w)=\big(i_+(G_w),i_-(G_w), $ $ i_0(G_w)\big)$, where $i_+(G_w),i_-(G_w),i_0(G_w)$ are the number of the positive, negative and zero eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $A(G_w)$ of $G_w$ including their multiplicities, respectively. $i_+(G_w)$, $i_-(G_w)$ is called the \textit{positive, negative index of inertia} of $G_w$, respectively. In this paper we present a lower bound for the positive, negative index of weighted unicyclic graphs of order $n$ with fixed girth and characterize all weighted unicyclic graphs att…
Given a positive-weighted simple connected graph with $m$ vertices, labelled by the numbers $1,\ldots,m$, we can construct an $m \times m$ matrix whose entry $(i,j)$, for any $i,j\in\{1,\dots,m\}$, is the minimal weight of a path between $i$ and $j$, where the weight of a path is the sum of the weights of its edges. Such a matrix is called the distance matrix of the weighted graph. There is wide literature about distance matrices of weighted graphs. In this paper we characterize distance matrices of positive-weighted $n$-hypercube graphs. Moreover we show that a connected bipartite $n$-regular…
Godsil (1985) defined a graph to be invertible if it has a non-singular adjacency matrix whose inverse is diagonally similar to a nonnegative integral matrix; the graph defined by the last matrix is then the inverse of the original graph. In this paper we call such graphs positively invertible and introduce a new concept of a negatively invertible graph by replacing the adjective `nonnegative' by `nonpositive in Godsil's definition; the graph defined by the negative of the resulting matrix is then the negative inverse of the original graph. We propose new constructions of integrally invertible…
For a graph $G$ with $p$ vertices the closed convex cone $\mathbb{S}^p_{\succeq0}(G)$ consists of all real positive semidefinite $p\times p$ matrices with zeros in the off-diagonal entries corresponding to nonedges of $G$. The extremal rays of this cone and their associated ranks have applications to matrix completion problems, maximum likelihood estimation in Gaussian graphical models in statistics, and Gauss elimination for sparse matrices. For a graph $G$ without $K_5$ minors, we show that the normal vectors to the facets of the $(\pm1)$-cut polytope of $G$ specify the off-diagonal entries …
On one hand, we study the class of graphs on surfaces, satisfying tessellation properties, with positive Forman curvature on each edge. Via medial graphs, we provide a new proof for the finiteness of the class, and give a complete classification. On the other hand, we classify the class of graphs on surfaces with positive corner curvature.
