In this paper we prove that there do not exist orthogonal instanton bundles on P^(2n+1) . In order to demonstrate this fact, we propose a new way of representing the invariant, introduced by L. Costa and G. Ottaviani, related to a rank 2n instanton bundle on P^(2n+1) .
Motivated by Yang-Mills theory in 4n dimensions, and generalizing the notion due to Atiyah, Drinfeld, Hitchin and Manin for n=1, Okonek, Spindler and Trautmann introduced instanton bundles and special instanton bundles as certain algebraic vector bundles of rank 2n on the complex projective space P^{2n+1}. The moduli space of special instanton bundles is shown to be rational.
We provide a description of the moduli space of framed autodual instanton bundles on projective space, focusing on the particular cases of symplectic and orthogonal instantons. Our description will use the generalized ADHM equations which define framed instanton sheaves.
In this note we prove that the moduli space of rank $2n$ symplectic instanton bundles on ${\PP^{2n+1}}$, defined from the well known monad condition, is affine. This result was not known even in the case $n=1$, where the real instanton bundles correspond to self dual Yang Mills $Sp(1)$-connections over the 4-dimensional sphere. The result is proved as a consequence of the existence of an invariant of the multidimensional matrices representing the instanton bundles.
This paper is devoted to the theory of symplectic instanton bundles on an odd dimensional projective space ${\mathbb P}^{2n+1}$ with $n\ge 2$. We study the 't Hooft instanton bundles introduced by Ottaviani and a new family of instanton bundles which generalizes one introduced on ${\mathbb P}^3$ independently by Rao and Skiti. The main result is the determination of the birational types of the moduli spaces of 't Hooft and of Rao-Skiti instanton bundles, respectively. Assuming a conjecture of Ottaviani, we show that the moduli space of all symplectic instanton bundles on ${\mathbb P}^{2n+1}$ w…
We study instanton bundles $E$ on $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. We construct two different monads which are the analog of the monads for instanton bundles on $\mathbb P^3$ and on the flag threefold $F(0,1,2)$. We characterize the Gieseker semistable cases and we prove the existence of $μ$-stable instanton bundles generically trivial on the lines for any possible $c_2(E)$. We also study the locus of jumping lines.
We propose a notion of instanton bundle (called $H$-instanton bundle) on any projective variety of dimension three polarized by a very ample divisor $H$, that naturally generalizes the ones on $\mathbb{P}^3$ and on the flag threefold $F(0,1,2)$. We discuss the cases of Veronese and Fano threefolds. Then we deal with $H$-instanton bundles $\mathcal{E}$ on three-dimensional rational normal scrolls $S(a_0,a_1,a_2)$. We give a monadic description of $H$-instanton bundles and we prove the existence of $μ$-stable $H$-instanton bundles on $S(a_0,a_1,a_2)$ for any admissible charge $k=c_2(\mathcal{E})…
We introduce the notion of an instanton bundle on a Fano threefold of index 2. For such bundles we give an analogue of a monadic description and discuss the curve of jumping lines. The cases of threefolds of degree 5 and 4 are considered in a greater detail.
We deal with instanton bundles on the product ${\mathbb P}^1\times{\mathbb P}^2$ and the blow up of ${\mathbb P}^3$ along a line. We give an explicit construction leading to instanton bundles. Moreover, we also show that they correspond to smooth points of a unique irreducible component of their moduli space.
We study the moduli space $I_{n,r}$ of rank-$2r$ symplectic instanton vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $r\ge2$ and second Chern class $n\ge r+1,\ n-r\equiv 1(\mathrm{mod}2)$. We introduce the notion of tame symplectic instantons by excluding a kind of pathological monads and show that the locus $I^*_{n,r}$ of tame symplectic instantons is irreducible and has the expected dimension, equal to $4n(r+1)-r(2r+1)$. The proof is inherently based on a relation between the spaces $I^*_{n,r}$ and the moduli spaces of 't Hooft instantons
In order to obtain existence criteria for orthogonal instanton bundles on $\mathbb{P}^n$, we provide a bijection between equivalence classes of orthogonal instanton bundles with no global sections and symmetric forms. Using such correspondence we are able to provide explicit examples of orthogonal instanton bundles with no global sections on $\mathbb{P}^n$ and prove that every orthogonal instanton bundle with no global sections on $\mathbb{P}^n$ and charge $c\geq 3$ has rank $r\leq (n-1)c$. We also prove that when the rank $r$ of the bundles reaches the upper bound, $\mathcal{M}_{\mathbb{P}^n}…
We prove the rationality and irreducibility of the moduli space of---what we call---the endomorphism-general instanton vector bundles of arbitrary rank on the projective space. In particular, we deduce the rationality of the moduli spaces of rank-two mathematical instantons. This problem was first studied by Hartshorne, Hirschowitz-Narasimhan in the late 1970s, and it has been reiterated within the framework of the ICM 2018.
We prove that minimal instanton bundles on a Fano threefold $X$ of Picard rank one and index two are semistable objects in the Kuznetsov component $\mathsf{Ku}(X)$, with respect to the stability conditions constructed by Bayer, Lahoz, Macrì and Stellari. When the degree of $X$ is at least $3$, we show torsion free generalizations of minimal instantons are also semistable objects. As a result, we describe the moduli space of semistable objects with same numerical classes as minimal instantons in $\mathsf{Ku}(X)$. We also investigate the stability of acyclic extensions of non-minimal instantons.
Symplectic instanton vector bundles on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$ constitute a natural generalization of mathematical instantons of rank 2. We study the moduli space $I_{n,r}$ of rank-$2r$ symplectic instanton vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $r\ge2$ and second Chern class $n\ge r,\ n\equiv r({\rm mod}2)$. We give an explicit construction of an irreducible component $I^*_{n,r}$ of this space for each such value of $n$ and show that $I^*_{n,r}$ has the expected dimension $4n(r+1)-r(2r+1)$.
Denote by MI(k) the moduli space of k-instanton bundles E of rank 2 on $\PP^3=\PP(V)$ and by $Z_k(E)$ the scheme of k-jumping lines. We prove that $[E]\in MI(k)$ is not stable for the action of SL(V) if $Z_k(E)\neq\emptyset$. Moreover $\dim Sym(E)\ge 1$ if $length Z_k(E)\ge 2$. We prove also that E is special if and only if $Z_k(E)$ is a smooth conic. The action of SL(V) on the moduli of special instanton bundles is studied in detail.
The problem of irreducibility of the moduli space I_n of rank-2 mathematical instanton vector bundles with arbitrary positive second Chern class n on the projective 3-space is considered. The irreducibility of I_n was known for small values of n: Barth 1977 (n=1), Hartshorne 1978 (n=2), Ellingsrud and Stromme 1981 (n=3), Barth 1981 (n=4), Coanda, Tikhomirov and Trautmann 2003 (n=5). In this paper we prove the irreducibility of I_n for an arbitrary odd n.
We consider an analogue of the notion of instanton bundle on the projective 3-space, consisting of a class of rank-2 vector bundles defined on smooth Fano threefolds X of Picard number one, having even or odd determinant according to the parity of K_X. We first construct a well-behaved irreducible component of their moduli spaces. Then, when the intermediate Jacobian of X is trivial, we look at the associated monads, hyperdeterminants and nets of quadrics. We also study one case where the intermediate Jacobian of X is non-trivial, namely when X is the intersection of two quadrics in P5, relati…
We present a new method to study 4-dimensional linear spaces of skew-symmetric matrices of constant co-rank 2, based on rank 2 vector bundles on P^3 and derived category tools. The method allows one to prove the existence of new examples of size 10x10 and 14x14 via instanton bundles of charge 2 and 4 respectively, and provides an explanation for what used to be the only known example (Westwick 1996). We also give an algorithm to construct explicitly a matrix of size 14 of this type.
Mathematical instanton bundles on $ P_3$ have their analogues in rank--$2n$ instanton bundles on odd dimensional projective spaces $ P_{2n+1}$. The families of special instanton bundles on these spaces generalize the special 'tHooft bundles on $ P_3$. We prove that for a special symplectic instanton bundle $ E$ on $ P_{2n+1}$ with $c_2=k$ $h^1End( E) = 4(3n-1) k + (2n-5)(2n-1)$. Therefore the dimension of the moduli space of instanton bundles grows linearly in $k$. The main difference with the well known case of $ P_3$ is that $h^2End( E)$ is nonzero, in fact we prove that it grows quadratical…
We study the scheme of multi-jumping lines of an $n$-instanton bundle mainly for $n\leq 5$. We apply it to prove the irreducibility and smoothness of the moduli space of 5-instanton. Some particular situations with higher $c_2$ are also studied.
In this paper we deal with a particular class of rank two vector bundles (\emph{instanton} bundles) on the Fano threefold of index one $F:=\mathbb{F}_1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. We show that every instanton bundle on $F$ can be described as the cohomology of a monad whose terms are free sheaves. Furthermore we prove the existence of instanton bundles for any admissible second Chern class and we construct a nice component of the moduli space where they sit. Finally we show that minimal instanton bundles (i.e. with the least possible degree of the second Chern class) are aCM and we describe their mo…
Let $MI_{Simp,P^{2n+1}}(k)$ be the moduli space of stable symplectic instanton bundles on $P^{2n+1}$ with second Chern class $c_2=k$ (it is a closed subscheme of the moduli space $MI_{P^{2n+1}}(k)$), We prove that the dimension of its Zariski tangent space at a special (symplectic) instanton bundle is $2k(5n-1)+4n^2-10n+3, k\geq 2$. It follows that special symplectic instanton bundles are smooth points for $ k \leq 3 $
We consider a compact twistor space P and assume that there is a surface S in P, which has degree one on twistor fibres and contains a twistor fibre F, e.g. P a LeBrun twistor space. Similar to Donaldson and Buchdahl we examine the restriction of an instanton bundle V equipped with a fixed trivialisation along F to a framed vector bundle over (S,F). First we develope inspired by Huybrechts and Lehn a suitable deformation theory for vector bundles over an analytic space framed by a vector bundle over a subspace of arbitrary codimension. In the second section we describe the restriction as a smo…
We show that the moduli space $M$ of holomorphic vector bundles on $CP^3$ that are trivial along a line is isomorphic (as a complex manifold) to a subvariety in the moduli of rational curves of the twistor space of the moduli space of framed instantons on $\R^4$, called the space of twistor sections. We then use this characterization to prove that $M$ is equipped with a torsion-free affine connection with holonomy in $Sp(2n,\C)$.
Instanton bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ have been at the core of the research in Algebraic Geometry during the last thirty years. Motivated by the recent extension of their definition to other Fano threefolds of Picard number one, we develop the theory of instanton bundles on the complete flag variety $F:=F(0,1,2)$ of point-lines on $\mathbb{P}^2$. After giving for them two different monadic presentations, we use it to show that the moduli space $MI_F(k)$ of instanton bundles of charge $k$ is a geometric GIT quotient and the open subspace $MI^s_F(k)\subset MI_F(k)$ of stable instanton bundles has …
A $h$-instanton sheaf on a closed subscheme $X$ of some projective space endowed with an ample and globally generated line bundle $\mathcal{O}_X(h)$ is a coherent sheaf whose cohomology table has a certain prescribed shape. In this paper we deal with $h$-instanton sheaves relating them to Ulrich sheaves. Moreover, we study $h$-instanton sheaves on smooth curves and surfaces, cyclic $n$-folds, Fano $3$-folds and scrolls over arbitrary smooth curves. We also deal with a family of monads associated to $h$-instanton bundles on varieties satisfying some mild extra technical conditions.
We propose a general definition of mathematical instanton bundle with given charge on any Fano threefold extending the classical definitions on $\mathbb P^3$ and on Fano threefold with cyclic Picard group. Then we deal with the case of the blow up of $\mathbb P^3$ at a point, giving an explicit construction of instanton bundles satisfying some important extra properties: moreover, we also show that they correspond to smooth points of a component of the moduli space.
Mathematical instanton bundles of rank 4 and $c_2=2$ on ${\mathbb P}^4$ have a smoothquasiprojective moduli space, which is shown via a direct GIT construction. A complete classification of jumping lines of these vector bundles is obtained. The duals of these bundles are described. Dimension computations and irreducibility proofs for some "interesting" subsets of the moduli space are presented. Restrictions of vector bundles from ${\mathbb P}^4$ to ${\mathbb P}^3$ are shown to produce mathematical instanton bundles on ${\mathbb P}^3$.
We show that instanton bundles of rank $r\le 2n-1$, defined as the cohomology of certain linear monads, on an $n$-dimensional projective variety with cyclic Picard group are semistable in the sense of Mumford-Takemoto. Furthermore, we show that rank $r\le n$ linear bundles with nonzero first Chern class over such varieties are stable. We also show that these bounds are sharp.
Consider a holomorphic torus action on vector bundles over a complex manifold which lifts to a holomorphic vector bundle. When the connected components of the fixed-point set are partially ordered, we construct, using sheaf-theoretical techniques, two spectral sequences that converges to the twisted Dolbeault cohomology groups and those with compact support, respectively. These spectral sequences are the holomorphic counterparts of the instanton complex in standard Morse theory. The results proved imply holomorphic Morse inequalities and fixed-point formulas on a possibly non-compact manifold.…
Let Sigma be a smooth complex curve, and let S be the product ruled surface Sigma \times CP^1. We prove a correspondence conjectured by Donaldson between finite energy U(2)-instantons over the cylinder Sigma \times S^1 \times R, and rank 2 holomorphic bundles over S whose restrictions to the divisors at infinity are stable.
We define Hecke transformation for orthogonal bundles over a compact Riemann surface. Using the cycles on a moduli space of orthogonal bundles given by Hecke transformations, we prove that the projectivized Picard bundle on the moduli space is stable.
We look at the following question raised by Kollár and Peskine. (Actually, it is a slightly weaker version of their question.) Let $V_t$ be a family of rank two vector bundles on $\Bbb P^3$. Assume that the general member of the family is a trivial vector bundle. Then, is the special member $V_0$ also a trivial vector bundle? We show that this question is equivalent to the nonexistence of morphisms from $\Bbb P^3\to \mathcal{X}$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is the infinite Grassmannian associated to SL(2). We further reduce this question to the nonexistence of $\Bbb C^*$-equivariant morphisms from $\B…
The variety of minimal rational tangents associated to Hecke curves was used by J.-M.Hwang [8] to prove the simplicity of the tangent bundle on the moduli of vector bundles over a curve. In this paper, we use the tangent maps of the symplectic and orthogonal Hecke curves to prove an analogous result for symplectic and orthogonal bundles. In particular, we show the nondegeneracy of the associated variety of minimal rational tangents, which implies the simplicity of the tangent bundle on the moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles over a curve. We also show that for large enough genus…
A generic quartic 3-fold X admits a 7-dimensional family of representations as the Pfaffian of an 8 by 8 skew-symmetric matrix of linear forms. This provides a 7-dimensional moduli space M of rank 2 vector bundles on X. A precise geometric description of a 14-dimensional family of half-canonical curves C of genus 15 in X such that the above vector bundles are obtained by Serre's construction from C is given. It is proved that the Abel-Jacobi map of this family factors through M, and the resulting map from M to the intermediate Jacobian is quasi-finite. In particular, every component of M has n…
In this paper, using the Atiyah-Ward equivalence and a theorem of Hitchin, one makes to correspond to certain bundles on the projective space, which are extensions of instanton bundles (in particular, these new bundles may have the first Chern class not congruent to 0 modulo the rank), bundles on the grassmanian Gr(2,4) or on the sphere S4, equiped with certain connections constructed from data associated to the bundle. Monads for these extensions are described.
Using gauge theory for Spin(7)-manifolds of dimension 8, we develop a procedure, called Spin-rotation, which transforms a (stable) holomorphic structure on a vector bundle over a complex torus of dimension 4 into a new holomorphic structure over a different complex torus. We show non-trivial examples of this procedure by rotating a decomposable Weil abelian variety into a non-decomposable one. As a byproduct, we obtain a Bogomolov type inequality, which gives restrictions for the existence of stable bundles on an abelian variety of dimension 4, and show examples in which this is stronger than …
An orthogonal bundle over a curve has an isotropic Segre invariant determined by the maximal degree of a Lagrangian subbundle. This invariant, and the induced stratifications on moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles, were studied for bundles of even rank in [4]. In this paper, we obtain analogous results for bundles of odd rank. We obtain a sharp upper bound on the isotropic Segre invariant. We show the irreducibility of the induced strata on the moduli spaces of orthogonal bundles of odd rank, and compute their dimensions. As a key ingredient of the proofs, we study the correspondence between L…
We study semi-stable sheaves of rank $2$ with Chern class $c_1=0$, $c_2=2$ and $c_3=0$ on the Fano 3-folds $V_4$ of Picard number $1$, degree $4$ and index $2$. We show the moduli space of such sheaves is isomorphic to the moduli space of semi-stable rank $2$ even degree vector bundles on a genus $2$ curve. This provides a natural smooth compatification of the moduli space of Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ on $V_4$.
We prove that the moduli spaces of parabolic symplectic/orthogonal bundles on a smooth curve are globally F regular type. As a consequence, all higher cohomology of theta line bundle vanish. During the proof, we develop a method to estimate codimension, and consider the infinite grassmannians for parabolic $G$ bundles.
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g \geq 2 defined over a field of characteristic two. We give examples of stable orthogonal bundles with unstable underlying vector bundles and use them to give counterexamples to Behrend's conjecture on the canonical reduction of principal G-bundles for G= SO(n) with n \geq 7.
This is the first nontrivial construction to date of instantons over a compact manifold with holonomy exactly $G_2$. The HYM connections on asymptotically stable bundles over Kovalev's noncompact Calabi-Yau 3-folds, obtained in the first article, are glued compatibly with a twisted connected sum, to produce a $G_2-$instanton over the resulting compact 7-manifold. This is accomplished under a nondegeneracy acyclic assumption on the bundle `at infinity', which occurs e.g. over certain projective varieties $X_{22}$ in $\mathbb{C}P^{13}$ equipped with an asymptotically rigid bundle.
We review the notions of symplectic and orthogonal vector bundles over curves, and the connection between principal parts and extensions of vector bundles. We give a criterion for a certain extension of rank 2n to be symplectic or orthogonal. We then describe almost all of its rank n vector subbundles using graphs of sheaf homomorphisms, and give criteria for the isotropy of these subbundles.
The Hodge Conjecture is equivalent to a statement about conditions under which a complex vector bundle on a smooth complex projective variety admits a holomorphic structure. I advertise a class of abelian four-folds due to Mumford where this approach could be tested. I construct explicit smooth vector bundles - which can in fact be constructed in terms of of smooth line bundles - whose Chern characters are given Hodge classes. An instanton connection on these vector bundles would endow them with a holomorphic structure and thus prove that these classes are algebraic. I use complex multiplicati…
Let ${\mathcal I}(n)$ denote the moduli space of rank $2$ instanton bundles of charge $n$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$. We know from several authors that ${\mathcal I}(n)$ is an irreducible, nonsingular and affine variety of dimension $8n-3$. Since every rank $2$ instanton bundle on ${\mathbb P}^3$ is stable, we may regard ${\mathcal I}(n)$ as an open subset of the projective Gieseker--Maruyama moduli scheme ${\mathcal M}(n)$ of rank $2$ semistable torsion free sheaves $F$ on ${\mathbb P}^3$ with Chern classes $c_1=c_3=0$ and $c_2=n$, and consider the closure $\overline{{\mathcal I}(n)}$ of ${\mathcal I…
A symplectic or orthogonal bundle $V$ of rank $2n$ over a curve has an invariant $t(V)$ which measures the maximal degree of its isotropic subbundles of rank $n$. This invariant $t$ defines stratifications on moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles. We study this stratification by relating it to another one given by secant varieties in certain extension spaces. We give a sharp upper bound on $t(V)$, which generalizes the classical Nagata bound for ruled surfaces and the Hirschowitz bound for vector bundles, and study the structure of the stratifications on the moduli spaces. In part…
We give the general presciption for calculating the moduli of irreducible, stable SU(n) holomorphic vector bundles with positive spectral covers over elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. Explicit results are presented for Hirzebruch base surfaces B=F_r. The transition moduli that are produced by chirality changing small instanton phase transitions are defined and specifically enumerated. The origin of these moduli, as the deformations of the spectral cover restricted to the ``lift'' of the horizontal curve of the M5-brane, is discussed. We present an alternative description of the trans…
