The variety of minimal rational tangents associated to Hecke curves was used by J.-M.Hwang [8] to prove the simplicity of the tangent bundle on the moduli of vector bundles over a curve. In this paper, we use the tangent maps of the symplectic and orthogonal Hecke curves to prove an analogous result for symplectic and orthogonal bundles. In particular, we show the nondegeneracy of the associated variety of minimal rational tangents, which implies the simplicity of the tangent bundle on the moduli spaces of symplectic and orthogonal bundles over a curve. We also show that for large enough genus, the tangent map is an embedding for a general symplectic or orthogonal bundle.
Recently, Kanemitsu has discovered a counterexample to the long-standing conjecture that the tangent bundle of a Fano manifold of Picard number one is (semi)stable. His counterexample is a smooth horospherical variety. There is a weaker conjecture that the tangent bundle of a Fano manifold of Picard number one is simple. We prove that this weaker conjecture is valid for smooth horospherical varieties of Picard number one. Our proof follows from the existence of an irreducible family of unbendable rational curves whose tangent vectors span the tangent spaces of the horospherical variety at gene…
Let $MI_{Simp,P^{2n+1}}(k)$ be the moduli space of stable symplectic instanton bundles on $P^{2n+1}$ with second Chern class $c_2=k$ (it is a closed subscheme of the moduli space $MI_{P^{2n+1}}(k)$), We prove that the dimension of its Zariski tangent space at a special (symplectic) instanton bundle is $2k(5n-1)+4n^2-10n+3, k\geq 2$. It follows that special symplectic instanton bundles are smooth points for $ k \leq 3 $
We review and streamline our previous results and the results of Y.Ostrover on the existence of Calabi quasi-morphisms and symplectic quasi-states on symplectic manifolds with semi-simple quantum homology. As an illustration, we discuss the case of symplectic toric Fano 4-manifolds. We present also new results due to D.McDuff: she observed that for the existence of quasi-morphisms/quasi-states it suffices to assume that the quantum homology contains a field as a direct summand, and she showed that this weaker condition holds true for one point blow-ups of non-uniruled symplectic manifolds.
Given a rational homogeneous variety G/P where G is complex simple and of type ADE, we prove that all tangent bundles T_{G/P} are simple, meaning that their only endomorphisms are scalar multiples of the identity. This result combined with Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence implies stability of these tangent bundles with respect to the anticanonical polarization. Our main tool is the equivalence of categories between homogeneous vector bundles on G/P and finite dimensional representations of a given quiver with relations.
We consider the question of simplicity of a ring $R$ under the action of its ring of differential operators $D_R$. We give examples to show that even when $R$ is Gorenstein and has rational singularities $R$ need not be a simple $D_R$-module; for example, this is the case when $R$ is the homogeneous coordinate ring of a smooth cubic surface. Our examples are homogeneous coordinate rings of smooth Fano varieties, and our proof proceeds by showing that the tangent bundle of such a variety need not be big. We also give a partial converse showing that when $R$ is the homogeneous coordinate ring of…
If $M$ is a symplectic manifold then the space of smooth loops $\mathrm C^{\infty}(\mathrm S^1,M)$ inherits of a quasi-symplectic form. We will focus in this thesis on an algebraic analogue of that result. Kapranov and Vasserot introduced and studied the formal loop space of a scheme $X$. It is an algebraic version of the space of smooth loops in a differentiable manifold. We generalize their construction to higher dimensional loops. To any scheme $X$ -- not necessarily smooth -- we associate $\mathcal L^d(X)$, the space of loops of dimension $d$. We prove it has a structure of (derived) Tate …
Mathematical instanton bundles on $ P_3$ have their analogues in rank--$2n$ instanton bundles on odd dimensional projective spaces $ P_{2n+1}$. The families of special instanton bundles on these spaces generalize the special 'tHooft bundles on $ P_3$. We prove that for a special symplectic instanton bundle $ E$ on $ P_{2n+1}$ with $c_2=k$ $h^1End( E) = 4(3n-1) k + (2n-5)(2n-1)$. Therefore the dimension of the moduli space of instanton bundles grows linearly in $k$. The main difference with the well known case of $ P_3$ is that $h^2End( E)$ is nonzero, in fact we prove that it grows quadratical…
We show that if the variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) of a uniruled projective manifold at a general point is projectively equivalent to that of a symplectic or an odd-symplectic Grassmannian, the germ of a general minimal rational curve is biholomorphic to the germ of a general line in a presymplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we characterize symplectic and odd-symplectic Grassmannians, among Fano manifolds of Picard number 1, by their VMRT at a general point and prove their rigidity under global Kähler deformation. Analogous results for $G/P$ associated with a long root were…
Our previous papers introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, show that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and establish a topological smoothability criterion for normal crossings symplectic varieties. The present paper constructs a blowup, a complex line bundle, and a logarithmic tangent bundle naturally associated with a normal crossings symplectic divisor and determines the Chern class of the last bundle. These structures hav applications in constructions and analysis of various moduli spaces. As a coroll…
Let $(X, ω, c_X)$ be a real symplectic 4-manifold with real part $R X$. Let $L \subset R X$ be a smooth curve such that $[L] = 0 \in H_1 (R X ; Z / 2Z)$. We construct invariants under deformation of the quadruple $(X, ω, c_X, L)$ by counting the number of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves which realize a given homology class $d$, pass through an appropriate number of points and are tangent to $L$. As an application, we prove a relation between the count of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves done in math.AG/0303145 and the count of reducible real rational curves done in math.SG/0502355. Fi…
We extend the formula for the Chern classes of blow-ups of algebraic varieties due to Porteous and Lascu-Scott, and of symplectic and complex manifolds due to Geiges and Pasquotto, to the blow-ups of almost complex manifolds. Our approach is based on a concrete partition for the tangent bundle of a blow-up. The use of topological K-theory of vector bundles simplifies the classical approaches.
We consider compact Kählerian manifolds $X$ of even dimension 4 or more, endowed with a log-symplectic holomorphic Poisson structure $Π$ which is sufficiently general, in a precise linear sense, with respect to its (normal-crossing) degeneracy divisor $D(Π)$. We prove that $(X, Π)$ has unobsrtuced deformations, that the tangent space to its deformation space can be identified in terms of the mixed Hodge structure on $H^2$ of the open symplectic manifold $X\setminus D(Π)$, and in fact coincides with this $H^2$ provided the Hodge number $h^{2,0}_X=0$, and finally that the degeneracy locus $D(Π)$…
The symplectic Brill--Noether locus ${\mathcal S}_{2n, K}^k$ associated to a curve $C$ parametrises stable rank $2n$ bundles over $C$ with at least $k$ sections and which carry a nondegenerate skewsymmetric bilinear form with values in the canonical bundle. This is a symmetric determinantal variety whose tangent spaces are defined by a symmetrised Petri map. We obtain upper bounds on the dimensions of various components of ${\mathcal S}_{2n, K}^k$. We show the nonemptiness of several ${\mathcal S}_{2n, K}^k$, and in most of these cases also the existence of a component which is generically smo…
Suppose N is an affine SL(2,R)-invariant submanfold of the moduli space of pairs (M,w) where M is a curve, and w is a holomorphic 1-form on M. We show that the Forni bundle of N (i.e. the maximal SL(2,R)-invariant isometric subbundle of the Hodge bundle of N) is always flat and is always orthogonal to the tangent space of N. As a corollary, it follows that the Hodge bundle of N is semisimple.
If $M$ is a symplectic manifold then the space of smooth loops $\mathrm C^{\infty}(\mathrm S^1,M)$ inherits of a quasi-symplectic form. We will focus in this article on an algebraic analogue of that result. In 2004, Kapranov and Vasserot introduced and studied the formal loop space of a scheme $X$. We generalize their construction to higher dimensional loops. To any scheme $X$ -- not necessarily smooth -- we associate $\mathcal L^d(X)$, the space of loops of dimension $d$. We prove it has a structure of (derived) Tate scheme -- ie its tangent is a Tate module: it is infinite dimensional but be…
We study various aspects on nontrivial logarithmic co-Higgs structure associated to unstable bundles on algebraic curves. We check several criteria for (non-)existence of nontrivial logarithmic co-Higgs structures and describe their parameter spaces. We also investigate the Segre invariants of these structures and see their non-simplicity. In the end we also study the higher dimensional case, specially when the tangent bundle is not semistable.
We construct invariants under deformation of real symplectic 4-manifolds. These invariants are obtained by counting three different kinds of real rational J-holomorphic curves which realize a given homology class and pass through a given real configuration of (the appropriate number of) points. These curves are cuspidal curves, reducible curves and curves with a prescribed tangent line at some real point of the configuration. They are counted with respect to some sign defined by the parity of their number of isolated real double points and in the case of reducible curves, with respect to some …
Pasquier and Perrin discovered that the ${\rm G}_2$-horospherical manifold ${\bf X}$ of Picard number 1 can be realized as a smooth specialization of the rational homogeneous space parameterizing the lines on the 5-dimensional hyperquadric, in other words, it can be deformed nontrivially to the rational homogeneous space. We show that ${\bf X}$ is the only smooth projective variety with this property. This is obtained as a consequence of our main result that ${\bf X}$ can be recognized by its VMRT, namely, a Fano manifold of Picard number 1 is biregular to ${\bf X}$ if and only if its VMRT at …
In this paper we will use our results about the local deformation theory of Calabi-Yau manifolds to define a Higgs field on the tangent bundle of the moduli space of CY threefolds. Combining this Higgs field with the Levi-Chevitta connection of the Weil-Petersson metrics on the moduli space of three dimensional CY manifolds, we construct a new $Sp(2h^{2,1}% ,\mathbb{R)}$ connection, following the ideas of Cecotti and Vafa. We prove that this new connection is a flat connection. Using this flat connection, we apply the scheme of geometric quantization introduced by Axelrod, Della Pietra and Wit…
Let $X$ be a projective variety with a torus action, which for simplicity we assume to have dimension 1. If $X$ is a smooth complex variety, then the geometric invariant theory quotient $X//G$ can be identifed with the symplectic reduction $X_r$. Lerman introduced a construction (valid for symplectic manifolds) called symplectic cutting, which constructs a manifold $X_c$, such that $X_c$ is the union of $X_r$ and an open subset $X_{>0} \subset X$. Moreover, there is a natural torus action on $X_c$ such that $X_r$ is a component of the fixed locus. Using localization for equivariant cohomology,…
A nonsingular rational curve $C$ in a complex manifold $X$ whose normal bundle is isomorphic to $${\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb P}^1}(1)^{\oplus p} \oplus {\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb P}^1}^{\oplus q}$$ for some nonnegative integers $p$ and $q$ is called an unbendable rational curve on $X$. Associated with it is the variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) at a point $x \in C,$ which is the germ of submanifolds ${\mathcal C}^C_x \subset {\mathbb P} T_x X$ consisting of tangent directions of small deformations of $C$ fixing $x$. Assuming that there exists a distribution $D \subset TX$ such that all small…
