We follow the approach employed by Y. Choquet-Bruhat, J. Isenberg and D. Pollack in the case of closed manifolds and establish existence and non-existence results for the Einstein-scalar field constraint equations on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds.
We discuss asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with a noncompact boundary which is close to a horosphere in a certain sense. The model case is a horoball or the complement of a horoball in standard hyperbolic space. We show some geometric formulas.
Generalising a proof by Bartnik in the asymptotically Euclidean case, we give an elementary proof of positivity of the hyperbolic mass near the hyperbolic space. It is a pleasure to dedicate this work to Robert Bartnik on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
Using the upper half space model, we evaluate a component of the hyperbolic mass functional evaluated on a special family of polyhedra extending a formula of Miao-Piubello.
We provide a Hilbert manifold structure {à} la Bartnik for the space of asymptotically hyperbolic initial data for the vacuum constraint equations. The adaptation led us to prove new weighted Poincar{é} and Korn type inequalities for AH manifolds with inner boundary and weakly regular metric.
When working with asymptotically hyperbolic initial data sets for general relativity it is convenient to assume certain simplifying properties. We prove that the subset of initial data sets with such properties is dense in the set of physically reasonable asymptotically hyperbolic initial data sets. More specifically, we show that an asymptotically hyperbolic initial data set with non-negative local energy density can be approximated by an initial data set with strictly positive local energy density and a simple structure at infinity, while changing the mass arbitrarily little. This is achieve…
We introduce a class of "weakly asymptotically hyperbolic" geometries whose sectional curvatures tend to $-1$ and are $C^0$, but are not necessarily $C^1$, conformally compact. We subsequently investigate the rate at which curvature invariants decay at infinity, identifying a conformally invariant tensor which serves as an obstruction to "higher order decay" of the Riemann curvature operator. Finally, we establish Fredholm results for geometric elliptic operators, extending the work of Rafe Mazzeo and John M. Lee to this setting. As an application, we show that any weakly asymptotically hyperb…
We use the notion of intrinsic flat distance to address the almost rigidity of the positive mass theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. In particular, we prove that a sequence of spherically symmetric asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds satisfying the conditions of the positive mass theorem converges to hyperbolic space in the intrinsic flat sense, if the limit of the mass along the sequence is zero.
We define a mass-type invariant for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with a noncompact boundary which are modelled at infinity on the hyperbolic half-space and prove a sharp positive mass inequality in the spin case under suitable dominant energy conditions. As an application we show that any such manifold which is Einstein and either has a totally geodesic boundary or is conformally compact and has a mean convex boundary is isometric to the hyperbolic half-space.
We prove positive mass theorems for asymptotically hyperbolic and asymptotically locally hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds with black-hole-type boundaries.
We prove positivity of energy for a class of asymptotically locally hyperbolic manifolds in dimensions $4\le n \le 7$. The result is established by first proving deformation-of-mass-aspect theorems in dimensions $n\ge 4$. Our positivity results extend to the case $n = 3$ when more stringent conditions are imposed.
We solve the Jang equation with respect to asymptotically hyperbolic "hyperboloidal" initial data. The results are applied to give a non-spinor proof of the positive mass theorem in the asymptotically hyperbolic setting. This work focuses on the case when the spatial dimension is equal to three.
We use the inverse mean curvature flow to prove a sharp Alexandrov-Fenchel-type inequality for a class of hypersurfaces in certain locally hyperbolic manifolds. As an application we derive an optimal Penrose inequality for asymptotically locally hyperbolic graphs in any dimension $n\geq 3$. When the horizon has the topology of a compact surface of genus at least one, this provides an affirmative answer, for this class of initial data sets, to a question posed by Gibbons, Chruściel and Simon on the validity of a Penrose-type inequality for black hole solutions carrying a higher genus horizon.
In 1996, Huisken-Yau proved that every three-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be uniquely foliated near infinity by stable closed surfaces of constant mean curvature (CMC) if it is asymptotically equal to the (spatial) Schwarzschild solution. Using their method, Rigger proved the same theorem for Riemannian manifolds being asymptotically equal to the (spatial) (Schwarzschild-)Anti-de Sitter solution. This was generalized to asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds by Neves-Tian, Chodosh, and the author at a later stage. In this work, we prove the reverse implication as the author already did in …
We construct transformations which take asymptotically AdS hyperbolic initial data into asymptotically flat initial data, and which preserve relevant physical quantities. This is used to derive geometric inequalities in the asymptotically AdS hyperbolic setting from counterparts in the asymptotically flat realm, whenever a geometrically motivated system of elliptic equations admits a solution. The inequalities treated here relate mass, angular momentum, charge, and horizon area.
The positive mass theorem states that the total mass of a complete asymptotically flat manifold with non-negative scalar curvature is non-negative; moreover, the total mass equals zero if and only if the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. Huang and Lee [2015] proved the stability of the Positive Mass Theorem for a class of $n$-dimensional ($n \geq 3$) asymptotically flat graphs with non-negative scalar curvature, in the sense of currents. Motivated by their work and using results of Dahl, Gicquaud and Sakovich [2013], we adapt their ideas to obtain a similar result regarding the sta…
We study the stability of the Positive Mass Theorem (PMT) and the Riemannian Penrose Inequality (RPI) in the case where a region of an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold $M^3$ can be foliated by a smooth solution of Inverse Mean Curvature Flow (IMCF) which is uniformly controlled. We consider a sequence of regions of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds $U_T^i\subset M_i^3$, foliated by a smooth solution to IMCF which is uniformly controlled, and if $\partial U_T^i = Σ_0^i \cup Σ_T^i$ and $m_H(Σ_T^i) \rightarrow 0$ then $U_T^i$ converges to a topological annulus portion of hyperbolic space with…

We study the prescribed scalar curvature problem, namely finding which function can be obtained as the scalar curvature of a metric in a given conformal class. We deal with the case of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds and restrict ourselves to non positive prescribed scalar curvature. Following earlier results, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition on the zero set of the prescribed scalar curvature so that the problem admits a (unique) solution.
In 1996, Huisen-Yau proved that every three-dimensional, asymptotically Schwarzschilden manifold with positive mass is uniquely foliated by stable spheres of constant mean curvature and they defined the center of mass using this CMC-foliation. Rigger and Neves-Tian showed in 2004 and 2009/10 analogous existence and uniqueness theorems for three-dimensional, asymptotically Anti-de Sitter and asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with positive mass aspect function, respectively. Last year, Cederbaum-Cortier-Sakovich proved that the CMC-foliation characterizes the center of mass in the hyperbolic s…
In this paper, we consider conformal metrics on a unit 4-disc with an asymptotically hyperbolic end and possible isolated conic singularities. We define a mass term of the AH end. If the $σ_{2}$ curvature has lower bound $σ_{2}\geq\frac{3}{2}$, we prove a Penrose type inequality relating the mass and contributions from singularities. We also classify sharp cases, which is the standard hyperbolic 4-space $\mathbb{H}^{4}$ when no singularity occurs. It is worth noting that our curvature condition implies non-positive energy density.
The Bartnik mass is a quasi-local mass tailored to asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature. From the perspective of general relativity, these model time-symmetric domains obeying the dominant energy condition without a cosmological constant. There is a natural analogue of the Bartnik mass for asymptotically hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds with a negative lower bound on scalar curvature which model time-symmetric domains obeying the dominant energy condition in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. Following the ideas of Mantoulidis and Schoen [20…
In this paper, we continue our investigations of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein vacuum constraints. Our previous studies of the asymptotically flat setting provided strong evidence for unstable asymptotics which we were able to resolve by introducing a certain modification of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation. The primary focus of the present paper here is the asymptotically hyperboloidal setting. We provide evidence through a mixture of numerical and analytical methods that the asymptotics of the solutions of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation is stable, an…
We prove the existence of asymptotically hyperbolic solutions to the vacuum Einstein constraint equations with a marginally outer trapped boundary of positive mean curvature, using the constant mean curvature conformal method. As an application of this result, we verify the Penrose inequality for certain perturbations of Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter black hole initial data.

General Relativity in 4 dimensions can be equivalently described as a dynamical theory of SO(3)-connections rather than metrics. We introduce the notion of asymptotically hyperbolic connections, and work out an analog of the Fefferman-Graham expansion in the language of connections. As in the metric setup, one can solve the arising "evolution" equations order by order in the expansion in powers of the radial coordinate. The solution in the connection setting is arguably simpler, and very straightforward algebraic manipulations allow one to see how the obstruction appears at third order in the …
We consider the normalized Ricci flow evolving from an initial metric which is conformally compactifiable and asymptotically hyperbolic. We show that there is a unique evolving metric which remains in this class, and that the flow exists up to the time where the norm of the Riemann tensor diverges. Restricting to initial metrics which belong to this class and are rotationally symmetric, we prove that if the sectional curvature in planes tangent to the orbits of symmetry is initially nonpositive, the flow starting from such an initial metric exists for all time. Moreover, if the sectional curva…
In this paper we continue earlier investigations of evolutionary formulations of the Einstein vacuum constraint equations originally introduced by Rácz. Motivated by the strong evidence from these works that the resulting vacuum initial data sets are generically not asymptotically flat we analyse the asymptotics of the solutions of a modified formulation by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We conclude that the vacuum initial data sets generated with this new formulation are generically asymptotically flat.
We present a symmetric hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein equations in affine-null coordinates. Giannakopoulos et. al. (arXiv:2007.06419) recently showed that the most commonly numerically implemented formulations of the Einstein equations in affine-null coordinates (and other single-null coordinate systems) are only weakly-but not strongly-hyperbolic. By making use of the tetrad-based Newman-Penrose formalism, our formulation avoids the hyperbolicity problems of the formulations investigated by Giannakopoulos et. al. We discuss a potential application of our formulation for studying gravi…
Using systematically isothermal coordinates we show that there exist three different maximal extensions of the original Einstein-Rosen bridge. One of them, the hyperbolic Einstein-Rosen bridge, has two-dimensional sections diffeomorphic to the covering space of an hyperboloid of revolution, a singularity satisfying the cosmic censorship and a bridge generated by light-like geodesics that can be traversed by time-like curves. The collapse process that might produce this object is an interesting open problem.
