The interaction of water with Fe$_3$O$_4$(001) is studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations including an on-site Coulomb term. For isolated molecules dissociative adsorption is strongly promoted at surface defect sites, while at higher coverages a hydrogen-bonded network forms with alternating molecular and dissociated species. This mixed adsorption mode and a suppression of the $(\sqrt{2}\times \sqrt{2})R45^{\circ}$-reconstruction are confirmed by a quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis. Adsorbate induced electron transfer processes add a new dimension towards understanding the catalytic activity of magnetite(001).
Two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides appear as good candidates for gas sensing and catalysis. Here, by means of density functional theory, we characterize the adsorption and dissociation of selected diatomic molecules (CO, H$_2$, O$_2$, and NO) on the MoSe$_2$ monolayer. We consider that these processes occur on the pristine $1H$-MoSe$_2$ monolayer and in the vicinity of an isolated Se vacancy. The presence of Se vacancies both enhances the molecular adsorption and reduces the energy needed for dissociation, making it energetically favorable for the case of O$_2$ and NO molecules. …
We show that the water dissociation reaction H$_2$O$\rightarrow$OH+H in the confined environment of MOF-74 channels can be precisely controlled by the addition of the noble gas He. Elucidating the entire reaction process with ab initio methods and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, we prove that the interaction between water molecules is critical to the formation of water clusters, which reduce the dissociation barrier by up to 37% and thus influence the reaction significantly. Our time-resolved IR measurements confirm that the formation of these clusters can be suppressed by introducing He gas, prov…
A single water molecule has nothing special. However, macroscopic water displays many anomalous properties at the interface, such as a high surface tension, hydrophobicity and hydrophillicity. Although the underlying mechanism is still elusive, hydrogen bond is expected to have played an important role. An interesting question is if the few-water molecule clusters will be qualitatively different from a single molecule. Using adsorption behavior as an example, by carefully choosing two-dimensional silicene as the substrate material, we demonstrate that water monomer, dimer and trimer show contr…
Water dissociation is of fundamental importance in scientific fields and has drawn considerable interest in diverse technological applications. However, the high activation barrier of breaking the O-H bond within the water molecule has been identified as the bottleneck, even for the water adsorbed on the graphene oxide (GO). Herein, using the density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that the water molecule can be spontaneously dissociated on GO supported by the (111) surface of the copper substrate (Copper-GO). This process involves a proton transferring from water to the interfa…
Water absorption and dissociation processes on pristine low-index TiO$_2$ interfaces are important but poorly understood outside the well-studied anatase (101) and rutile (110). To understand these, we construct three sets of machine learning potentials that are simultaneously applicable to various TiO$_2$ surfaces, based on three density-functional-theory approximations. We compute the water dissociation free energies on seven pristine TiO$_2$ surfaces, and predict that anatase (100), anatase (110), rutile (001), and rutile (011) surfaces favor water dissociation, anatase (101) and rutile (10…
We present a comprehensive density-functional theory study addressing the adsorption, dissociation and successive diffusion of water molecules on the two regular terminations of SrTiO3(001). Combining the obtained supercell-geometry converged energetics within a first-principles thermodynamics framework we are able to reproduce the experimentally observed hydroxilation of the SrO-termination already at lowest background humidity, whereas the TiO2-termination stays free of water molecules in the regime of low water partial pressures. This different behavior is traced back to the effortless form…
Water dissociation is a rate limiting step in many industrially important chemical reactions. In this investigation, climbing image nudged elastic band (CINEB) method, within the framework of density functional theory, is used to report the activation energies (E a ) of water dissociation on Cu(111) surface with a vacancy. Introduction of vacancy results in a reduced coordination of the dissociated products, which facilitates their availability for reactions that involve water dissociation as an intermediate step. Activation energy for dissociation of water reduces by nearly 0.2 eV on Cu(111) …
The transfer of electrons between a solid surface and adsorbed atomic or molecular species is fundamental in natural and synthetic processes, being at the heart of most catalytic reactions and many sensors. In special cases, metallic conduction can be induced at the surface of, for example, Si-terminated SiC1, or mixed-terminated ZnO2, in the presence of a hydrogen adlayer. Generally, only the surface atoms are significantly affected by adsorbates. However, remotely changing electronic states far from the adsorbed layer is possible if these states are electrostatically coupled to the surface. …
Metal organic framework (MOF) materials in general, and MOF-74 in particular, have promising properties for many technologically important processes. However, their instability under humid conditions severely restricts practical use. We show that this instability and the accompanying reduction of the CO$_2$ uptake capacity of MOF-74 under humid conditions originate in the water dissociation reaction H$_2$O$\rightarrow$OH+H at the metal centers. After this dissociation, the OH groups coordinate to the metal centers, explaining the reduction in the MOF's CO$_2$ uptake capacity. This reduction th…
The adsorption and dissociation of isolated water molecule on Zr(0001) surface are theoretically investigated for the first time by using density-functional theory calculations. Two kinds of adsorption configurations with almost the same adsorption energy are identified as the locally stable states, i.e., the flat and upright configurations respectively. It is shown that the flat adsorption states on the top site are dominated by the 1$b_{1}$-$d$ band coupling, insensitive to the azimuthal orientation. The diffusion between adjacent top sites reveals that the water molecule is very mobile on t…
Novel uses for 2-dimensional materials like graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) are being frequently discovered especially for membrane and catalysis applications. Still however, a great deal remains to be understood about the interaction of environmentally and industrially elevant molecules such as water with these materials. Taking inspiration from advances in hybridising graphene and h-BN, we explore using density functional theory, the dissociation of water, hydrogen, methane, and methanol on graphene, h-BN, and their isoelectronic doped counterparts: BN doped graphene and C doped …
Water-metal interfaces are ubiquitous and play a key role in many chemical processes, from catalysis to corrosion. Whereas water adlayers on atomically flat transition metal surfaces have been investigated in depth, little is known about the chemistry of water on stepped surfaces, commonly occurring in realistic situations. Using first-principles simulations we study the adsorption of water on a stepped platinum surface. We find that water adsorbs preferentially at the step edge, forming linear clusters or chains, stabilized by the cooperative effect of chemical bonds with the substrate and hy…
We present a detailed investigation of the structure and activity of extended defects namely monoatomic steps on (1x1)-TiO2(110). Specifically, the two most stable <001> and <1-11> step edges are considered. Employing an automated genetic algorithm that samples a large number of candidates for each step edge, more stable, reconstructed structures were found for the <1-11> step edge, while the bulk truncated structures were recovered for the <001> step edge. We demonstrate how oxygen vacancies along these defects have lower formation energies than on flat terraces and how water and methanol mol…
Interactions between molecules and electrode surfaces play a key role in electrochemical processes and are a subject of extensive research, both experimental and theoretical. In this manuscript, we address the water dissociation reaction on a Pd(111) electrode surface, modelled as a slab embedded in an external electric field. We aim at unraveling the relationship between surface charge and zero-point-energy in aiding or hindering this reaction. We calculate energy barriers with dispersion-corrected density-functional theory and an efficient parallel implementation of the nudged-elastic-band m…
We investigate, using density functional theory, how the interaction between the ferroelectric polarization and the chemical structure of the (001) surfaces of bismuth ferrite influences the surface properties and reactivity of this material. A precise understanding ofthe surface behavior of ferroelectrics is necessary for their use in surface science applications such as catalysis as well as for their incorporation in microelectronic devices. Using the (001) surface of bismuth ferrite as a model system we show that the most energetically favoured surface geometries are combinations of surface…
The adsorption properties of isolated H$_{2}$O molecule on stoichiometric and reduced (with on-surface oxygen vacancy) ceria(1111) surfaces at low coverage are theoretically investigated by using density-functional-theory+\emph{U} calculations and \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics simulations. We identify the most stable adsorption configurations on these two kinds of surfaces, which form two hydrogen bonds between the water molecule and the oxide surface. The electronic structures indicate that the hybridization of the molecular orbitals of water and surface-layer O-2\emph{p} states domin…
Polarons are ubiquitous in many semiconductors and have been linked with conductivity and optical response of materials for photovoltaics and heterogeneous catalysis, yet how surface polarons influence adsorption remains unclear. Here, by modelling the surface of rutile titania using density functional theory, we reveal the effect of small surface polarons on water adsorption, dissociation, and hydrogen bonding. On the one hand the presence of such polarons significantly suppresses dissociation of water molecules that are bonded directly to polaronic sites. On the other hand, polarons facilita…
The interaction of water with $α$-alumina (i.e. $α$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ surfaces is important in a variety of applications and a useful model for the interaction of water with environmentally abundant aluminosilicate phases. Despite its significance, studies of water interaction with $α$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ surfaces other than the $(0001)$ are extremely limited. Here we characterize the interaction of water (D$_{2}$O) with a well defined $α$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$$(1\bar{1}02)$ surface in UHV both experimentally, using temperature programmed desorption and surface-specific vibrational spectroscopy, and theor…
We study extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation induced defects in single-layer graphene. Two mechanisms for inducing defects in graphene were separately investigated: photon induced chemical reactions between graphene and background residual gases, and disrupting the network of sp2 bonds, due to photon and/or photoelectrons induced bond cleaving. Raman spectroscopy shows that D peak intensities grow after EUV irradiation with increasing water partial pressure in the exposure chamber. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments prove that EUV radiation results in water dissociation on the…
Water dissociation represents one of the most important reactions in catalysis, essential to the surface and nano sciences [e.g., Hass et al., Science, 1998, 282, 265-268; Brown et al., Science 2001, 294, 67-69; Bikondoa et al., Nature 2005, 5, 189-192]. However, the dissociation mechanism on most oxide surfaces is not well understood due to the experimental challenges of preparing surface structures and characterizing reaction pathways. To remedy this problem, we propose the metal organic framework MOF-74 as an ideal model system to study water reactions. Its crystalline structure is well cha…

We investigate energetic stability and dissociation dynamics of water adsorption at the LaAlO3 surface of the n-type LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interface and its effect on electronic properties of the interface by carrying out first-principles electronic structure calculations. In an ambient atmosphere at room temperature the configuration of 1 monolayer (ML) of water molecules including 3/4 ML of dissociated water molecules adsorbed at the surface is found to be most stable, the configuration of 1 ML of dissociated water molecules is metastable. Water molecule dissociation induces a shift-up of …
We investigate the variation of the oscillation frequency of the Mg$^{2+}$ and O$^{2-}$ ions in the magnesium oxide lattice due to the interactions of the surface with water monolayers by means of Low Energy Electron Diffraction. Our key result is a new technique to determine the adsorbate vibrations produced by the water monolayers on the surface lattice as a consequence of their change in the surface Debye temperature and its chemical shift. The latter was systematically investigated for different annealing times and for a constant external thermal perturbation in the range of 110-300 K in o…
Second order Moeller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) at the complete basis set (CBS) limit and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) are used to examine several low energy isomers of the water hexamer. Both approaches predict the so-called "prism" to be the lowest energy isomer, followed by "cage", "book", and "cyclic" isomers. The energies of the four isomers are very similar, all being within 10-15 meV/H2O. This reference data is then used to evaluate the performance of several density-functional theory (DFT) exchange-correlation (xc) functionals. A subset of the xc functionals tested for sm…
Improving reactivity on an insulating surface is crucial due to their important applications in surface catalytic reactions. In this work, we carried out first-principles calculations to investigate the adsorption of O2 on a single-layer MgO(100) film deposited on metal substrate. The adsorption configurations, reaction pathways, molecular dynamics simulations, and electronic properties are reported. We reveal that O2 can completely dissociate on the surface, which is in sharp contrast to that on MgO(100) films thicker than one monolayer. The dissociated O2 tends to penetrate into the interfac…
The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays an important role in evaluating a photocatalyst and to understand its surface chemistry. In this work we present a comparative study of the OER on the oxide NaTaO$_3$ (113) surface and the oxynitride SrTaO$_2$N (001) surface. Oxynitrides are highly promising photocatalysts due to their smaller band gap and resulting better visible light absorption compared to oxides but our knowledge about their surface structure and chemistry is still very limited. With the goal to compare the surface chemistry of oxides and oxynitrides, we perform density functional …
Instability of most prototypical metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in the presence of moisture is always a limita- tion for industrial scale development. In this work, we examine the dissociation mechanism of microporous paddle wheel frameworks M(bdc)(ted)0.5 [M=Cu, Zn, Ni, Co; bdc= 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate; ted= triethylenediamine] in controlled humidity environments. Combined in-situ IR spectroscopy, Raman, and Powder x-ray diffraction measurements show that the stability and modification of isostructual M(bdc)(ted)0.5 compounds upon exposure to water vapor critically depend on the central met…
Wetting transitions have been predicted and observed to occur for various combinations of fluids and surfaces. This paper describes the origin of such transitions, for liquid films on solid surfaces, in terms of the gas-surface interaction potentials V(r), which depend on the specific adsorption system. The transitions of light inert gases and H2 molecules on alkali metal surfaces have been explored extensively and are relatively well understood in terms of the least attractive adsorption interactions in nature. Much less thoroughly investigated are wetting transitions of Hg, water, heavy iner…
Polar perovskite oxide surfaces are subject to structural reconstruction as a possible stabilisation mechanisms, which changes the surface structure and hence the surface chemistry. To investigate this effect, we study the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the reconstructed (001) surface of NaTaO$_3$, by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and compare it with the non-polar (113) surface of the same material. For the clean surface the reconstruction has a beneficial effect on the catalytic activity, lowering the minimal overpotential from 0.88 V to 0.70 V while also changing …
Density Functional Theory calculations are used to investigate the role of substrate-induced cooperative effects on the adsorption of water on a partially oxidized transition metal surface, O(2x2)/Ru(0001). Focussing particularly on the dimer configuration, we analyze the different contributions to its binding energy. A significant reinforcement of the intermolecular hydrogen-bond (H-bond), also supported by the observed frequency shifts of the vibration modes, is attributed to the polarization of the donor molecule when bonded to the Ru atoms in the substrate. This result is further confirmed…
The object of this study is the kinetic process of solid-liquid first-order phase transition - melting of carbon dioxide CS-I hydrate with various cavity occupation ratios. The work was done within a framework of study on the local structure of water molecules. These include the time depending change of the short-range order at temperatures close to the melting point and comparison with hexagonal ice structure. Using molecular dynamics method, dependencies of the internal energy of the studied systems on the time of heating were found. Jumps in the internal energy of solids in the range at 275…
The interaction of water with oxide surfaces is of great interest for both fundamental science and applications. We present a combined theoretical [density functional theory (DFT)] and experimental [Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), photoemission spectroscopy (PES)] study of water interaction with the two-dimensional titania overlayer that terminates the SrTiO$_3$(110)-(4$\times$1) surface and consists of TiO$_4$ tetrahedra. STM, core-level and valence band PES show that H$_2$O neither adsorbs nor dissociates on the stoichiometric surface at room temperature, while it dissociates at oxygen …

High quality reference data from diffusion Monte Carlo calculations are presented for bulk sI methane hydrate, a complex crystal exhibiting both hydrogen-bond and dispersion dominated interactions. The performance of some commonly used exchange-correlation functionals and all-atom point charge force fields is evaluated. Our results show that none of the exchange-correlation functionals tested are sufficient to describe both the energetics and the structure of methane hydrate accurately, whilst the point charge force fields perform badly in their description of the cohesive energy but fair well…

Far from being conclusively understood, the reactive interaction of water with rutile does still present a challenge to atomistic modelling techniques rooted on quantum mechanics. We show that static geometries of stoichiometric TiO$_2$/water interfaces can be described well by Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB). However, this method needs further improvements to reproduce the low dissociation propensity of H$_2$O after adsorption predicted by Density Functional Theory (DFT). A reliable description of the surface reactivity of water is fundamental to investigate the non-stoichiometric rec…
Reducing carbon dioxide emissions has become a must in society, being crucial to find alternatives to supply the energy demand. In this paper, we study the adsorption of polar working fluids in hydrophobic and hydrophilic zeolites by means of experimental quasi-equilibrated temperature-programmed desorption and adsorption combined with Monte Carlo simulations. We measured and computed water and methanol adsorption isobars in high-silica HS-FAU, NaY, and NaX zeolites. We use the ex…

We study the initial interaction of adsorbed H2O with P-rich and Ga-rich GaP(100) surfaces. Atomically well defined surfaces are prepared by metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy and transferred contamination-free to ultra-high vacuum, where water is adsorbed at room temperature. Finally, the surfaces are annealed in vapour phase ambient. During all steps, the impact on the surface properties is monitored with in-situ reflection anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS). Photoelectron spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction are applied for further in-system studies. After exposure up to saturation o…
By means of the in situ electrokinetic assessment of aqueous particles in conjunction with the addition of anionic adsorbates, we develop and examine a new approach to the scalable characterization of the specific accessible surface area of particles in water. For alumina powders of differing morphology in mildly acidic aqueous suspensions, the effective surface charge was modified by carboxylate anion adsorption through the incremental addition of oxalic and citric acids. The observed zeta potential variation as a function of the proportional reagent additive was found to exhibit inverse hype…
