We present a comprehensive density-functional theory study addressing the adsorption, dissociation and successive diffusion of water molecules on the two regular terminations of SrTiO3(001). Combining the obtained supercell-geometry converged energetics within a first-principles thermodynamics framework we are able to reproduce the experimentally observed hydroxilation of the SrO-termination already at lowest background humidity, whereas the TiO2-termination stays free of water molecules in the regime of low water partial pressures. This different behavior is traced back to the effortless formation of energetically very favorable hydroxyl-pairs on the prior termination. Contrary to the prevalent understanding our calculations indicate that at low coverages also the less water-affine TiO2-termination can readily decompose water, with the often described molecular state only stabilized towards higher coverages.
The adsorption and dissociation of nitrogen molecule on Fe(111) surface is studied by density functional theory calculations. The simulation results show that the molecule needs to acquire parallel orientation with respect to the surface for the adsorption and dissociation. In addition, Fe(111) surface is more active in dissociating N2 than Fe(100) surface due to its morphology. The interaction between antibonding molecular orbitals of N2 and partially filled $3d$ orbitals of Fe atoms on the surface may be the key to the molecular dissociation of N2. To break down the triple bond of N2, the el…
Understanding surface reactivity is crucial in many fields, going from heterogeneous catalysis to materials oxidation and corrosion. In order to decipher the surface reactions of ZrB2 exposed to the harsh environment of aerospace components, the chemical activity of both Zr- and B-surfaces is predicted and compared by using density functional theory and nudged elastic band methods. In particular the adsorption, dissociation and diffusion of O2, CO and H2O are extensively examined through the calculation of surface adsorption energies and reaction pathways. We find the dissociative adsorption o…
Two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides appear as good candidates for gas sensing and catalysis. Here, by means of density functional theory, we characterize the adsorption and dissociation of selected diatomic molecules (CO, H$_2$, O$_2$, and NO) on the MoSe$_2$ monolayer. We consider that these processes occur on the pristine $1H$-MoSe$_2$ monolayer and in the vicinity of an isolated Se vacancy. The presence of Se vacancies both enhances the molecular adsorption and reduces the energy needed for dissociation, making it energetically favorable for the case of O$_2$ and NO molecules. …
Using the plane wave pseudopotential method within the density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation potential, we have calculated adsorption energies (Ead), diffusion barriers and the first dissociation barriers (E1) for NH3 on the Ni(111), Pd(111) and Ni(211) surfaces. The top sites are found to be preferred for NH3 adsorption on Ni(111) and Pd(111). The diffusion barrier is calculated to be substantially higher for Pd(111) than for Ni(111). We also find that during the first dissociation step (NH3 => NH2 +H) on Ni(111) surface NH2 moves f…
The adsorption and dissociation of O$_{2}$ molecules at the Be(0001) surface is studied by using density-functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation and a supercell approach. The physi- and chemisorbed molecular precursor states are identified to be along the parallel and vertical channels, respectively. It is shown that the HH-Z (see the text for definition) channel is the most stable channel for the molecular chemisorption of O$_{2}$. The electronic and magnetic properties of this most stable chemisorbed molecular state are studied, which shows that the electrons transfer…
Using first-principles calculations, we systematically study the dissociation of O$_2$ molecules on different ultrathin Pb(111) films. Based on our previous work revealing the molecular adsorption precursor states for O$_2$, we further explore that why there are two nearly degenerate adsorption states on Pb(111) ultrathin films, but no precursor adsorption states exist at all on the Mg(0001) and Al(111) surfaces. And the reason is concluded to be the different surface electronic structures. For the O$_2$ dissociation, we consider both the reaction channels from gas-like and molecularly adsorbe…
We used DFT to study the energetics of the decomposition of alane, AlH3, on the Si(001) surface, as the acceptor complement to PH3. Alane forms a dative bond with the raised atoms of silicon surface dimers, via the Si atom lone pair. We calculated the energies of various structures along the pathway of successive dehydrogenation events following adsorption: AlH2, AlH and Al, finding a gradual, significant decrease in energy. For each stage, we analyse the structure and bonding, and present simulated STM images of the lowest energy structures. Finally, we find that the energy of Al atoms incorp…
The adsorption properties of isolated H$_{2}$O molecule on stoichiometric and reduced (with on-surface oxygen vacancy) ceria(1111) surfaces at low coverage are theoretically investigated by using density-functional-theory+\emph{U} calculations and \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics simulations. We identify the most stable adsorption configurations on these two kinds of surfaces, which form two hydrogen bonds between the water molecule and the oxide surface. The electronic structures indicate that the hybridization of the molecular orbitals of water and surface-layer O-2\emph{p} states domin…
By performing first-principles molecular dynamics calculations, we systematically simulate the adsorption behavior of oxygen molecules on the clean and strained Pb(111) surfaces. The obtained molecular adsorption precursor state, and the activated dissociation process for oxygen molecules on the clean Pb surface are in good agreements with our previous static calculations, and perfectly explains previous experimental observations [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 104, 9204 (2007)]. In addition, we also study the influences of surface strain on the dissociation behaviors of O2 molecules. It is fou…
We investigated interaction between hydrogen molecules and bare as well as functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) using first-principles plane wave method. We found that the binding energy of the H$_{2}$ physisorbed on the bare SWNT is very weak, and can be enhanced neither by increasing the curvature of the surface through radial deformation, nor by the coadsorption of Li atom that makes the semiconducting tube metallic. Though the bonding is strengthened upon adsorption directly to Li atom, yet its nature continues to be physisorption. However, the character of the bonding change…
The oxygen adsorption and dissociation on pristine silicene surface are studied by use of first-principles in this letter. The oxygen adsorption and dissociation on pristine silicene surface are studied by use of first-principles in this letter. It is found that the pristine silicene is not stable in air because the oxygen molecule can be easily adsorbed and dissociated into two O atoms without overcoming any energy barrier on pristine silicene surface. In addition, dissociated oxygen atoms are relatively difficult to migrate on or desorbed from pristine silicene surface, leading to poor mobil…
To investigate chemical reactivity of Cu atomic-scale structures, we performed simulations based on the generalized gradient approximation in the density functional theory. An atomic layer of Cu forming a triangular lattice (TL) was found to give a stable structure. The nitrogen monoxide molecule (NO) was adsorbed on some atomic sites of TL or on an atomic step structure (ASS) of Cu. The molecular adsorption energy on TL was -0.83 eV. Our data suggested that dissociative adsorption of NO with a dissociation energy of -1.08 eV was possible with an energy barrier of order 1.4 eV. In this optimiz…
The adsorption and dissociation of isolated water molecule on Zr(0001) surface are theoretically investigated for the first time by using density-functional theory calculations. Two kinds of adsorption configurations with almost the same adsorption energy are identified as the locally stable states, i.e., the flat and upright configurations respectively. It is shown that the flat adsorption states on the top site are dominated by the 1$b_{1}$-$d$ band coupling, insensitive to the azimuthal orientation. The diffusion between adjacent top sites reveals that the water molecule is very mobile on t…
Adsorption and dissociation of hydrocarbons on metallic surfaces represent crucial steps to carburization of metal. Here, we use density functional theory total energy calculations with the climbing-image nudged elastic band method to estimate the adsorption energies and dissociation barriers for different CO coverages with surface supercells of different sizes. For the absorption of CO, the contribution from van der Waals interaction in the computation of adsorption parameters is found important in small systems with high CO-coverages. The dissociation process involves carbon insertion into t…
The adsorption of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) on the passivated H/Si(111) surface is explored from first principles. We find that the organic molecule is predominantly physisorbed with a distance to the surface of $2.6 \pm 0.1$ Angstrom, but also exhibits sizable resonance with the underlying substrate. This establishes the present system as interesting mixed covalent-van-der-Waals-bound test case, which we use to compare the impact of different approaches to van-der-Waals interactions. (Spin-polarized) scanning tunneling microscopy (SP STM) images are simulated, selectively accessing different…
We study the dissociative adsorption of methane at the surface of graphene. Free energy profiles, which include activation energies for different steps of the reaction, are computed from constrained ab initio molecular dynamics. At 300 K, the reaction barriers are much lower than experimental bond dissociation energies of gaseous methane, strongly indicating that graphene surface acts as a catalyst of methane decomposition. On the other hand, the barriers are still much higher than on nickel surface. Methane dissociation therefore occurs at a higher rate on nickel than on graphene. This reacti…
The specific role played by small gold nanoparticles supported on the rutile TiO2(110) surface in the processes of adsorption and dissociation of H2 is discussed. It is demonstrated that the molecular and dissociative adsorption of H2 on Au_n clusters containing n = 1, 2, 8 and 20 atoms depends on cluster size, geometry structure, cluster flexibility and the interaction with the support material. Rutile TiO2(110) support energetically promotes H2 dissociation on gold clusters. It is demonstrated that the active sites towards H2 dissociation are located at corners and edges on the surface of th…
Using first-principles calculations, we systematically study the potential energy surfaces and dissociation processes of the hydrogen molecule on the Mg(0001) surface. It is found that during the dissociative adsorption process with the minimum energy barrier, the hydrogen molecule firstly orients perpendicular, and then rotates to be parallel to the surface. It is also found that the orientation of the hydrogen molecule at the transition state is neither perpendicular nor parallel to the surface. Most importantly, we find that the rotation causes a reduction of the calculated dissociation ene…
Improving reactivity on an insulating surface is crucial due to their important applications in surface catalytic reactions. In this work, we carried out first-principles calculations to investigate the adsorption of O2 on a single-layer MgO(100) film deposited on metal substrate. The adsorption configurations, reaction pathways, molecular dynamics simulations, and electronic properties are reported. We reveal that O2 can completely dissociate on the surface, which is in sharp contrast to that on MgO(100) films thicker than one monolayer. The dissociated O2 tends to penetrate into the interfac…
We present a first-principles study of geometrical structure and energetics of hydrogen adsorbed on hexagonal single-walled silicon nanotubes (SiNTs). The adsorption behaviors of hydrogen molecules in SiNTs are investigated. The binding energies for the most stable physisorbed configurations are calculated to be less than 0.1 eV. The energy barriers are also investigated for dissociation of H2 molecules. Finally, we consider encapsulation of H2 molecules in SiNTs. The possibility of SiNTs as hydrogen storage materials is discussed.
The influence of molecular vibrations on dissociative adsorption is studied by six-dimensional quantum dynamical calculations. For the system H_2 at Pd(100), which possesses non-activated pathways, it is shown that large vibrational effects exist and that they are not due to a strongly curved reaction path and a late dissociation-hindering minimum barrier, as was previously assumed. Instead, they are caused by the lowering of the H-H vibrational frequency during the dissociation and the multi-dimensionality of the potential energy surface. Still there are quantitative discrepancies between the…
We investigate energetic stability and dissociation dynamics of water adsorption at the LaAlO3 surface of the n-type LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interface and its effect on electronic properties of the interface by carrying out first-principles electronic structure calculations. In an ambient atmosphere at room temperature the configuration of 1 monolayer (ML) of water molecules including 3/4 ML of dissociated water molecules adsorbed at the surface is found to be most stable, the configuration of 1 ML of dissociated water molecules is metastable. Water molecule dissociation induces a shift-up of …
Polarons are ubiquitous in many semiconductors and have been linked with conductivity and optical response of materials for photovoltaics and heterogeneous catalysis, yet how surface polarons influence adsorption remains unclear. Here, by modelling the surface of rutile titania using density functional theory, we reveal the effect of small surface polarons on water adsorption, dissociation, and hydrogen bonding. On the one hand the presence of such polarons significantly suppresses dissociation of water molecules that are bonded directly to polaronic sites. On the other hand, polarons facilita…
We present quantum Monte Carlo calculations for various reaction pathways of H$_2$ with Si(001), using large model clusters of the surface. We obtain reaction energies and energy barriers noticeably higher than those from approximate exchange-correlation functionals. In improvement over previous studies, our adsorption barriers closely agree with experimental data. For desorption, the calculations give barriers for conventional pathways in excess of the presently accepted experimental value, and pinpoint the role of coverage effects and desorption from steps.
Using first-principles calculations, we systematically study the adsorption behavior of a single molecular H$_{2}$O on the Be(0001) surface. We find that the favored molecular adsorption site is the top site with an adsorption energy of about 0.3 eV, together with the detailed electronic structure analysis, suggesting a weak binding strength of the H$_{2}$O/Be(0001) surface. The adsorption interaction is mainly contributed by the overlapping between the $s$ and $p_{z}$ states of the top-layer Be atom and the molecular orbitals 1$b_{1}$ and 3$a_{1}$ of H$_{2}$O. The activation energy for H$_{2}…
Recent experiments on the silicon terminated $3\times 2$ SiC(100) surface indicated an unexpected metallic character upon hydrogen adsorption. This effect was attributed to the bonding of hydrogen to a row of Si atoms and to the stabilization of a neighboring dangling bond row. Here, on the basis of Density-Functional calculations, we show that multiple-layer adsorption of H at the reconstructed surface is compatible with a different geometry: besides saturating the topmost Si dangling bonds, H atoms are adsorbed at rather unusual sites, \textit{i.e.} stable bridge positions above third-layer …
The interaction of water with Fe$_3$O$_4$(001) is studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations including an on-site Coulomb term. For isolated molecules dissociative adsorption is strongly promoted at surface defect sites, while at higher coverages a hydrogen-bonded network forms with alternating molecular and dissociated species. This mixed adsorption mode and a suppression of the $(\sqrt{2}\times \sqrt{2})R45^{\circ}$-reconstruction are confirmed by a quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED) analysis. Adsorbate induced electron transfer processes add a new dimension tow…
The O2 dissociation and O atoms adsorption on free-standing germanene are studied by using first-principles calculations in this letter. Compared with the spontaneous dissociation of oxygen molecule on free-standing silicene in air, germanene is more stable than silicene from kinetic point of view, with overcoming energy barrier of about 0.55 eV. Especially, in contrast with the unique chemical adsorption of O2-dissociation-induced O atoms on silicene, oxygen molecule can behave a correspondingly stable adsorption on germanene surface. Moreover, single O atom adsorption on germanene is also di…
Using first-principles calculations, we systematically study the potential energy surfaces and dissociation processes for hydrogen molecules on the clean and hydrogen-preadsorbed Be(0001) surfaces. It is found that the most energetically favored dissociation channel for H2 molecules on the clean Be surface is at the surface top site, with the minimum energy barrier of 0.75 eV. It is further found that after dissociation, hydrogen atoms do not like to cluster with each other, as well as to penetrate into subsurface sites. For the hydrogen-preadsorbed Be(0001) surface, the smallest dissociation …
A single water molecule has nothing special. However, macroscopic water displays many anomalous properties at the interface, such as a high surface tension, hydrophobicity and hydrophillicity. Although the underlying mechanism is still elusive, hydrogen bond is expected to have played an important role. An interesting question is if the few-water molecule clusters will be qualitatively different from a single molecule. Using adsorption behavior as an example, by carefully choosing two-dimensional silicene as the substrate material, we demonstrate that water monomer, dimer and trimer show contr…
We study the interaction of H$_2$, O$_2$, CO, H$_2$O and OH molecules with the vacancy defects of graphene and silicene. Atoms around the bare vacancy reconstruct and specific chemically active sites are created. While H$_2$, O$_2$ and CO remain intact on both pristine graphene and silicene, these molecules can dissociate when they are placed at the close proximity of these chemically active sites and nucleate centers for the hydrogenation and oxygenation. Saturation of the dangling bonds at the defect sites by constituent atoms of dissociated molecules gives rise to significant modification o…
We present experimental results and theoretical simulations of the adsorption behavior of the metal-organic precursor Co2(CO)8 on SiO2 surfaces after application of two different pre-treatment steps, namely by air plasma cleaning or a focused electron beam pre-irradiation. We observe a spontaneous dissociation of the precursor molecules as well as auto-deposition of cobalt on the pre-treated SiO2 surfaces. We also find that the differences in metal content and relative stability of these deposits depend on the pre-treatment conditions of the substrate. Transport measurements of these deposits …
The interaction of water with oxide surfaces is of great interest for both fundamental science and applications. We present a combined theoretical [density functional theory (DFT)] and experimental [Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), photoemission spectroscopy (PES)] study of water interaction with the two-dimensional titania overlayer that terminates the SrTiO$_3$(110)-(4$\times$1) surface and consists of TiO$_4$ tetrahedra. STM, core-level and valence band PES show that H$_2$O neither adsorbs nor dissociates on the stoichiometric surface at room temperature, while it dissociates at oxygen …
Novel uses for 2-dimensional materials like graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) are being frequently discovered especially for membrane and catalysis applications. Still however, a great deal remains to be understood about the interaction of environmentally and industrially elevant molecules such as water with these materials. Taking inspiration from advances in hybridising graphene and h-BN, we explore using density functional theory, the dissociation of water, hydrogen, methane, and methanol on graphene, h-BN, and their isoelectronic doped counterparts: BN doped graphene and C doped …
Understanding the interaction of organic molecules with TiO2 surfaces is important for a wide range of technological applications. While density functional theory (DFT) calculations can provide valuable insight about these interactions, traditional DFT approaches with local exchange-correlation functionals suffer from a poor description of non-bonding van der Waals (vdW) interactions. We examine here the contribution of vdW forces to the interaction of small organic molecules (methane, methanol, formic acid and glycine) with the TiO2 (110) surface, based on DFT calculations with the optB88-vdW…
First-principle density-functional calculations have been applied to study the interaction of molecular chlorine with the (111) plane of copper. Using transition-state search method, we considered the elementary processes (Cl$_2$ dissociation, adsorption, diffusion, association and desorption) on the chlorinated Cu(111) surface. A systematic study of possible desorption pathways has been carried out for different species (Cl, Cl$_2$, CuCl, CuCl$_2$, and Cu) at various chlorine coverage. As a result, we concluded that chlorine monolayer irrespective of the coverage desorbs in the form of CuCl m…
Several dissociated and two non-dissociated adsorption structures of the phenol molecule on the Si(001)-(2 \times 1) surface are studied using density functional theory with various exchange and correlation functionals. The relaxed structures and adsorption energies are obtained and it is found that the dissociated structures are energetically more favourable than the non-dissociated structures. However, the ground state energies alone do not determine which structure is obtained experimentally. To elucidate the situation core level shift spectra for Si 2p and C 1s states are simulated and com…
The potential energy surface (PES) of dissociative adsorption of H_2 on Pd(100) is investigated using density functional theory and the full-potential linear augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. Several dissociation pathways are identified which have a vanishing energy barrier. A pronounced dependence of the potential energy on ``cartwheel'' rotations of the molecular axis is found. The calculated PES shows no indication of the presence of a precursor state in front of the surface. Both results indicate that steering effects determine the observed decrease of the sticking coefficient at low …
By simulating the dissociation of O2 molecules on the Be(0001) surface using the first-principles molecular dynamics approach, we propose a new atomistic model for the surface oxidation of sp metals. In our model, only the dissociation of the first oxygen molecule needs to overcome an energy barrier, while the subsequent oxygen molecules dissociate barrierlessly around the adsorption area. Consequently, oxide islands form on the metal surface, and grow up in a lateral way. We also discover that the firstly dissociated oxygen atoms are not so mobile on the Be(0001) surface, as on the Al(111) su…

We study the gas-surface dynamics of O2 at Ag(111) with the particular objective to unravel whether electronic non-adiabatic effects are contributing to the experimentally established inertness of the surface with respect to oxygen uptake. We employ a first-principles divide and conquer approach based on an extensive density-functional theory mapping of the adiabatic potential energy surface (PES) along the six O2 molecular degrees of freedom. Neural networks are subsequently used to interpolate this grid data to a continuous representation. The low computational cost with which forces are ava…
Water-metal interfaces are ubiquitous and play a key role in many chemical processes, from catalysis to corrosion. Whereas water adlayers on atomically flat transition metal surfaces have been investigated in depth, little is known about the chemistry of water on stepped surfaces, commonly occurring in realistic situations. Using first-principles simulations we study the adsorption of water on a stepped platinum surface. We find that water adsorbs preferentially at the step edge, forming linear clusters or chains, stabilized by the cooperative effect of chemical bonds with the substrate and hy…
The interaction of water with $α$-alumina (i.e. $α$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ surfaces is important in a variety of applications and a useful model for the interaction of water with environmentally abundant aluminosilicate phases. Despite its significance, studies of water interaction with $α$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ surfaces other than the $(0001)$ are extremely limited. Here we characterize the interaction of water (D$_{2}$O) with a well defined $α$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$$(1\bar{1}02)$ surface in UHV both experimentally, using temperature programmed desorption and surface-specific vibrational spectroscopy, and theor…

Understanding the reactivity of ubiquitous molecules on complex oxides has broad impacts in energy applications and catalysis. The garnet-type Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ is a promising solid-state electrolyte for lithium(Li)-ion batteries, and it readily reacts with H$_2$O and CO$_2$ when exposed to ambient air. Such reactions form a contamination layer on Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ that is detrimental to the battery operations. The strong interactions of Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ with H$_2$O and CO$_2$, however, make Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ a promising support to catalyze H$_2$O dissociat…
Water dissociation represents one of the most important reactions in catalysis, essential to the surface and nano sciences [e.g., Hass et al., Science, 1998, 282, 265-268; Brown et al., Science 2001, 294, 67-69; Bikondoa et al., Nature 2005, 5, 189-192]. However, the dissociation mechanism on most oxide surfaces is not well understood due to the experimental challenges of preparing surface structures and characterizing reaction pathways. To remedy this problem, we propose the metal organic framework MOF-74 as an ideal model system to study water reactions. Its crystalline structure is well cha…
During the exothermic adsorption of molecules at solid surfaces dissipation of the released energy occurs via the excitation of electronic and phononic degrees of freedom. For metallic substrates the role of the nonadiabatic electronic excitation channel has been controversially discussed, as the absence of a band gap could favour an easy coupling to a manifold of electronhole pairs of arbitrarily low energies. We analyse this situation for the highly exothermic showcase system of molecular oxygen dissociating at Pd(100), using time-dependent perturbation theory applied to first-principles ele…
Far from being conclusively understood, the reactive interaction of water with rutile does still present a challenge to atomistic modelling techniques rooted on quantum mechanics. We show that static geometries of stoichiometric TiO$_2$/water interfaces can be described well by Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB). However, this method needs further improvements to reproduce the low dissociation propensity of H$_2$O after adsorption predicted by Density Functional Theory (DFT). A reliable description of the surface reactivity of water is fundamental to investigate the non-stoichiometric rec…
