The adsorption and dissociation of O$_{2}$ molecules at the Be(0001) surface is studied by using density-functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation and a supercell approach. The physi- and chemisorbed molecular precursor states are identified to be along the parallel and vertical channels, respectively. It is shown that the HH-Z (see the text for definition) channel is the most stable channel for the molecular chemisorption of O$_{2}$. The electronic and magnetic properties of this most stable chemisorbed molecular state are studied, which shows that the electrons transfer forth and back between the spin-resolved antibonding $π^{\ast}$ molecular orbitals and the surface Be $sp$ states. A distinct covalent weight in the molecule-metal bond is also shown. The dissociation of O$_{2}$ is determined by calculating the adiabatic potential energy surfaces, wherein the T-Y channel is found to be the most stable and favorable for the dissociative adsorption of O$_{2}$. Remarkably, we predict that unlike the other simple $sp$ metal surfaces such as Al(111) and Mg(0001), the \textit{adiabatic} dissociation process of O$_{2}$ at Be(0001) is an activated type with a sizeable energy barrier.
Understanding surface reactivity is crucial in many fields, going from heterogeneous catalysis to materials oxidation and corrosion. In order to decipher the surface reactions of ZrB2 exposed to the harsh environment of aerospace components, the chemical activity of both Zr- and B-surfaces is predicted and compared by using density functional theory and nudged elastic band methods. In particular the adsorption, dissociation and diffusion of O2, CO and H2O are extensively examined through the calculation of surface adsorption energies and reaction pathways. We find the dissociative adsorption o…
Two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides appear as good candidates for gas sensing and catalysis. Here, by means of density functional theory, we characterize the adsorption and dissociation of selected diatomic molecules (CO, H$_2$, O$_2$, and NO) on the MoSe$_2$ monolayer. We consider that these processes occur on the pristine $1H$-MoSe$_2$ monolayer and in the vicinity of an isolated Se vacancy. The presence of Se vacancies both enhances the molecular adsorption and reduces the energy needed for dissociation, making it energetically favorable for the case of O$_2$ and NO molecules. …
We used DFT to study the energetics of the decomposition of alane, AlH3, on the Si(001) surface, as the acceptor complement to PH3. Alane forms a dative bond with the raised atoms of silicon surface dimers, via the Si atom lone pair. We calculated the energies of various structures along the pathway of successive dehydrogenation events following adsorption: AlH2, AlH and Al, finding a gradual, significant decrease in energy. For each stage, we analyse the structure and bonding, and present simulated STM images of the lowest energy structures. Finally, we find that the energy of Al atoms incorp…
Adsorption and dissociation of hydrocarbons on metallic surfaces represent crucial steps to carburization of metal. Here, we use density functional theory total energy calculations with the climbing-image nudged elastic band method to estimate the adsorption energies and dissociation barriers for different CO coverages with surface supercells of different sizes. For the absorption of CO, the contribution from van der Waals interaction in the computation of adsorption parameters is found important in small systems with high CO-coverages. The dissociation process involves carbon insertion into t…
The adsorption of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) on the passivated H/Si(111) surface is explored from first principles. We find that the organic molecule is predominantly physisorbed with a distance to the surface of $2.6 \pm 0.1$ Angstrom, but also exhibits sizable resonance with the underlying substrate. This establishes the present system as interesting mixed covalent-van-der-Waals-bound test case, which we use to compare the impact of different approaches to van-der-Waals interactions. (Spin-polarized) scanning tunneling microscopy (SP STM) images are simulated, selectively accessing different…
We study the dissociative adsorption of methane at the surface of graphene. Free energy profiles, which include activation energies for different steps of the reaction, are computed from constrained ab initio molecular dynamics. At 300 K, the reaction barriers are much lower than experimental bond dissociation energies of gaseous methane, strongly indicating that graphene surface acts as a catalyst of methane decomposition. On the other hand, the barriers are still much higher than on nickel surface. Methane dissociation therefore occurs at a higher rate on nickel than on graphene. This reacti…
The oxygen dissociation and the oxidized structure on the pristine C3N monolayer in exposure to air are the inevitably critical issues for the C3N engineering and surface functionalization yet have not been revealed in detail. Using the first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the possible O2 adsorption sites, various O2 dissociation pathways and the oxidized structures. It is demonstrated that the pristine C3N monolayer shows more O2 physisorption sites and exhibits stronger O2 adsorption than the pristine graphene. Among various dissociation pathways, the most prefe…
Improving reactivity on an insulating surface is crucial due to their important applications in surface catalytic reactions. In this work, we carried out first-principles calculations to investigate the adsorption of O2 on a single-layer MgO(100) film deposited on metal substrate. The adsorption configurations, reaction pathways, molecular dynamics simulations, and electronic properties are reported. We reveal that O2 can completely dissociate on the surface, which is in sharp contrast to that on MgO(100) films thicker than one monolayer. The dissociated O2 tends to penetrate into the interfac…
Polarons are ubiquitous in many semiconductors and have been linked with conductivity and optical response of materials for photovoltaics and heterogeneous catalysis, yet how surface polarons influence adsorption remains unclear. Here, by modelling the surface of rutile titania using density functional theory, we reveal the effect of small surface polarons on water adsorption, dissociation, and hydrogen bonding. On the one hand the presence of such polarons significantly suppresses dissociation of water molecules that are bonded directly to polaronic sites. On the other hand, polarons facilita…
A single water molecule has nothing special. However, macroscopic water displays many anomalous properties at the interface, such as a high surface tension, hydrophobicity and hydrophillicity. Although the underlying mechanism is still elusive, hydrogen bond is expected to have played an important role. An interesting question is if the few-water molecule clusters will be qualitatively different from a single molecule. Using adsorption behavior as an example, by carefully choosing two-dimensional silicene as the substrate material, we demonstrate that water monomer, dimer and trimer show contr…
We present a systematic analysis of molecular oxygen (O$_2$) adsorption trends on bimetallic PtNi clusters and their monometallic counterparts supported on MgO(100), by means of periodic DFT calculations for sizes between 25 up to 58 atoms. O$_2$ adsorption was studied on a variety of inequivalent sites for different structural motifs, such as truncated octahedral (TO), cuboctahedral (CO), icosahedral (Ih) and decahedral (Dh) geometries. We found that O$_2$ prefers to bind on top of two metal atoms, parallel to the cluster, with an average chemisorption energy of 1.09 eV (PtNi), 1.07 eV (Pt) a…
Novel uses for 2-dimensional materials like graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) are being frequently discovered especially for membrane and catalysis applications. Still however, a great deal remains to be understood about the interaction of environmentally and industrially elevant molecules such as water with these materials. Taking inspiration from advances in hybridising graphene and h-BN, we explore using density functional theory, the dissociation of water, hydrogen, methane, and methanol on graphene, h-BN, and their isoelectronic doped counterparts: BN doped graphene and C doped …
First-principle density-functional calculations have been applied to study the interaction of molecular chlorine with the (111) plane of copper. Using transition-state search method, we considered the elementary processes (Cl$_2$ dissociation, adsorption, diffusion, association and desorption) on the chlorinated Cu(111) surface. A systematic study of possible desorption pathways has been carried out for different species (Cl, Cl$_2$, CuCl, CuCl$_2$, and Cu) at various chlorine coverage. As a result, we concluded that chlorine monolayer irrespective of the coverage desorbs in the form of CuCl m…

The adsorption of hydrogen at nonpolar GaN(1-100) surfaces and its impact on the electronic and vibrational properties is investigated using surface electron spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For the surface mediated dissociation of H2 and the subsequent adsorption of H, an energy barrier of 0.55 eV has to be overcome. The calculated kinetic surface phase diagram indicates that the reaction is kinetically hindered at low pressures and low temperatures. At higher temperatures ab-initio thermodynamics show, that the H-free surface is energetically fav…
This paper presents a DFT study for phosphine adsorption on a Si(001)-2$\times$1 surface covered by a chlorine monolayer, including adsorption on local defects, i.e. mono- and bivacancies in the adsorbate layer (Cl, Cl$_2$), and combined vacancies with removed silicon atoms (SiCl, SiCl$_2$). Activation barriers were found for the adsorbing PH$_3$ to dissociate into PH$_2$+H and PH+H$_2$ fragments; it was also established that phosphine dissociation on combined vacancies is possible at room temperature. If there is a silicon vacancy on the surface, phosphorus settles in the Si(001) lattice as P…
