The measured low initial sticking probability of oxygen molecules at the Al(111) surface that had puzzled the field for many years was recently explained in a non-adiabatic picture invoking spin-selection rules [J. Behler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 036104 (2005)]. These selection rules tend to conserve the initial spin-triplet character of the free O2 molecule during the molecule's approach to the surface. A new locally-constrained density-functional theory approach gave access to the corresponding potential-energy surface (PES) seen by such an impinging spin-triplet molecule and indicated barriers to dissociation which reduce the sticking probability. Here, we further substantiate this non-adiabatic picture by providing a detailed account of the employed approach. Building on the previous work, we focus in particular on inaccuracies in present-day exchange-correlation functionals. Our analysis shows that small quantitative differences in the spin-triplet constrained PES obtained with different gradient-corrected functionals have a noticeable effect on the lowest kinetic energy part of the resulting sticking curve.
The oxygen dissociation and the oxidized structure on the pristine C3N monolayer in exposure to air are the inevitably critical issues for the C3N engineering and surface functionalization yet have not been revealed in detail. Using the first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the possible O2 adsorption sites, various O2 dissociation pathways and the oxidized structures. It is demonstrated that the pristine C3N monolayer shows more O2 physisorption sites and exhibits stronger O2 adsorption than the pristine graphene. Among various dissociation pathways, the most prefe…
We present a detailed first-principles study which explores the configurational space along the relevant reactions and migration paths involving the formation and dissociation of interstitial carbon-oxygen complexes, $\mathrm{C_{i}O_{i}}$ and $\mathrm{C_{i}O_{2i}}$, in silicon. The formation/dissociation mechanisms of $\mathrm{C_{i}O_{i}}$ and $\mathrm{C_{i}O_{2i}}$ are found as occurring via capture/emission of mobile $\mathrm{C_{i}}$ impurities by/from O-complexes anchored to the lattice. The lowest activation energies for dissociation of $\mathrm{C_{i}O_{i}}$ and $\mathrm{C_{i}O_{2i}}$ into…
Water dissociation is of fundamental importance in scientific fields and has drawn considerable interest in diverse technological applications. However, the high activation barrier of breaking the O-H bond within the water molecule has been identified as the bottleneck, even for the water adsorbed on the graphene oxide (GO). Herein, using the density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that the water molecule can be spontaneously dissociated on GO supported by the (111) surface of the copper substrate (Copper-GO). This process involves a proton transferring from water to the interfa…
Supported vanadia catalysts are modeled within the cluster DFT approach to get an insight into the mechanism in which the support affects the activity of vanadia in the oxidation processes. The energy of the V=O group dissociation chosen as a descriptor of the oxidation activity is estimated using two aligned divanadate V2O3(OH)4 particles at various distances. Separation between particles allows to imitate (i) the various supporting materials (e.g. TiO2, SiO2, etc.), and (ii) the coverage of vanadia on a particular support. A substantial compensation of the energy loss upon the vanadyl oxygen…
The object of this study is the kinetic process of solid-liquid first-order phase transition - melting of carbon dioxide CS-I hydrate with various cavity occupation ratios. The work was done within a framework of study on the local structure of water molecules. These include the time depending change of the short-range order at temperatures close to the melting point and comparison with hexagonal ice structure. Using molecular dynamics method, dependencies of the internal energy of the studied systems on the time of heating were found. Jumps in the internal energy of solids in the range at 275…
Role of Oxygen during Methane Oxidation on Pd$_1$/PdO$_1$@CeO$_2$ Surface: A Combined Density Functional Theory, Microkinetic, and Machine Learning Approach
During aqueous corrosion, atoms in the solid react chemically with oxygen, leading either to the formation of an oxide film or to the dissolution of the host material. Commonly, the first step in corrosion involves an oxygen atom from the dissociated water that reacts with the surface atoms and breaks near surface bonds. In contrast, hydrogen on the surface often functions as a passivating species. Here, we discovered that the roles of O and H are reversed in the early corrosion stages on a Si terminated SiC surface. O forms stable species on the surface, and chemical attack occurs by H that b…
In this work, using the state-of-the-art first principles calculations based on density functional theory, we found that the concentration as well as coordination of surface oxygen vacancies with respect to each other were critical for direct water-splitting reaction on the (001) surfaces of PbTiO$_3$ and TiO$_2$. For the water-splitting reaction to happen on TiO$_2$-terminated surfaces, it is necessary to have two neighboring O-vacancies acting as active sites that host two adsorbing water molecules. However, eventual dissociation of O-H bonds is possible only in the presence of an additional…
An approach to non-adiabatic dynamics of atoms in molecular and condensed matter systems under general non-equilibrium conditions is proposed. In this method interaction between nuclei and electrons is considered explicitly up to the second order in atomic displacements defined with respect to the mean atomic trajectory. This method enables one to consider movement of atoms beyond their simple vibrations. Both electrons and nuclei are treated fully quantum-mechanically using a combination of path integrals applied to nuclei and non-equilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) to elections. Our method …

Singlet oxygen (O2) comes in two flavors -- namely the dominant lower-energy a 1 Delta g state and the higher-energy shorter-lived b 1 Sigma + g state -- and plays a key role in many photochemical and photobiological reactions. For this reason, and because of the large size of the systems treated, many papers have appeared with density-functional theory (DFT) treatments of the reactions of 1 O 2 with different chemical species. The present work serves as a reminder that the common assumption that it is enough to fix the spin multipicity as unity is not enough to insure a correct treatment of s…
