We establish sufficient conditions for the C$^*$-simplicity of two classes of groups. The first class is that of groups acting on trees, such as amalgamated free products, HNN-extensions, and their normal subgroups; for example normal subgroups of Baumslag-Solitar groups. The second class is that of fundamental groups of compact 3-manifolds, related to the first class by their Kneser-Milnor and JSJ-decompositions. Much of our analysis deals with conditions on an action of a group $Γ$ on a tree $T$ which imply the following three properties: abundance of hyperbolic elements, better called strong hyperbolicity, minimality, both on the tree $T$ and on its boundary $\partial T$, and faithfulness in a strong sense. An important step in this analysis is to identify automorphism of $T$ which are \emph{slender}, namely such that their fixed-point sets in $\partial T$ are nowhere dense for the shadow topology.
We obtain an upper bound for relative Dehn functions of amalgamated products and HNN--extensions with respect to certain collections of subgroups. Our main results generalize the combination theorems for relatively hyperbolic groups proved by Dahmani.
It is shown that the compressed word problem for an HNN-extension with base group H and finite associated subgroups is polynomial time Turing-reducible to the compressed word problem for H. An analogous result for amalgamated free products is shown as well.
We calculate the rank gradient and p-gradient of free products, free products with amalgamation over an amenable subgroup, and HNN extensions with an amenable associated subgroup. The notion of cost is used to compute the rank gradient of amalgamated free products and HNN extensions. For the p-gradient the Kurosh subgroup theorems for amalgamated free products and HNN extensions will be used.
Gromov asked whether an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group was always simply connected or had uncountable fundamental group. We prove that Gromov's dichotomy holds for asympotic cones with cut points, as well as, HNN extensions and amalgamated products where the associated subgroups are nicely embedded. We also show a slightly weaker dichotomy for multiple HNN extensions of free groups.
The authors announce the following theorem. Theorem 1. If $G=A*_H B$ is an amalgamated product where $A$ and $B$ are finitely presented and semistable at infinity, and $H$ is finitely generated, then $G$ is semistable at infinity. If $G=A*_H$ is an HNN-extension where $A$ is finitely presented and semistable at infinity, and $H$ is finitely generated, then $G$ is semistable at infinity.
It is shown that the knapsack problem, which was introduced by Myasnikov et al. for arbitrary finitely generated groups, can be solved in NP for graph groups. This result even holds if the group elements are represented in a compressed form by SLPs, which generalizes the classical NP-completeness result of the integer knapsack problem. We also prove general transfer results: NP-membership of the knapsack problem is passed on to finite extensions, HNN-extensions over finite associated subgroups, and amalgamated products with finite identified subgroups.
In this paper we introduce a new family of icc groups $Γ$ which satisfy the following product rigidity phenomenon, discovered in [DHI16] (see also [dSP17]): all tensor product decompositions of the II$_1$ factor $L(Γ)$ arise only from the canonical direct product decompositions of the underlying group $Γ$. Our groups are assembled from certain HNN-extensions and amalgamated free products and include many remarkable groups studied throughout mathematics such as graph product groups, poly-amalgam groups, Burger-Mozes groups, Higman group, various integral two-dimensional Cremona groups, etc. As …
Garside groups are a natural lattice-theoretic generalisation of the braid groups and spherical type Artin--Tits groups. Here we show that the class of Garside groups is closed under some free products with cyclic amalgamated subgroups. We deduce that every tree product of infinite cyclic groups is a Garside group. Moreover, we study those cyclic HNN extensions of Garside groups that are Garside groups as well. Using a theorem of Pietrowski, we conclude this paper by stating that a non-cyclic one-relator group is Garside if and only if its centre is nontrivial.
Let C be a class of groups. We give sufficient conditions ensuring that a free product of residually C groups is again residually C, and analogous conditions are given for locally embeddable into C groups. As a corollary, we obtain that the class of residually amenable groups and the one of LEA groups (or initially subamenable groups in the terminology of Gromov) are closed under taking free products. Moreover, we consider the pro-C topology and we characterize special HNN extensions and amalgamated free products that are residually C, where C is a suitable class of groups. In this way, we des…
We investigate which free constructions (amalgamated products and HNN-extensions) over word hyperbolic groups produce groups that are again word hyperbolic. A complete answer is obtained for the case when the amalgamated subgroups are virtually cyclic. The results are applied, in particular, to show that a ${\bf Q}$-completion of a torsion-free hyperbolic group has solvable word problem and conjugacy problem.
It is an old and challenging topic to investigate for which discrete groups G the full group C*-algebra C*(G) is residually finite-dimensional (RFD). In particular not much is known about how the RFD property behaves under fundamental constructions, such as amalgamated free products and HNN-extensions. In [CS19] it was proved that central amalgamated free products of virtually abelian groups are RFD. In this paper we prove that this holds much beyond this case. Our method is based on showing a certain approximation property for characters induced from central subgroups. In particular it allows…
We study the second bounded cohomology of an amalgamated free product of groups, and an HNN extension of a group. As an application, we have a group with infinitely many ends has infinite dimensional second bounded cohomology.
In 1971 J. Stallings introduced a generalisation of amalgamated products of groups -- called a pregroup, which is a particular kind of a partial group. He defined the universal group U(P) of a pregroup P to be a universal object (in the sense of category theory) extending the partial operations on P to group operations on U(P). This turns out to be a versatile and convenient generalisation of classical group constructions: HNN-extensions and amalgamated products. In this respect the following general question arises. Which properties of pregroups, or relations between pregroups, carry over to …
We construct nonlinear hyperbolic groups which are large, torsion-free, one-ended, and admit a finite $K(π,1)$. Our examples are built from superrigid cocompact rank one lattices via amalgamated free products and HNN extensions.
We prove that the palindromic width of HNN extension of a group by proper associated subgroups is infinite. We also prove that the palindromic width of the amalgamated free product of two groups via a proper subgroup is infinite (except when the amalgamated subgroup has index two in each of the factors). Combining these results it follows that the palindromic width of the fundamental group of a graph of groups is mostly infinite.
In various occasions the conjugacy problem in finitely generated amalgamated products and HNN extensions can be decided efficiently for elements which cannot be conjugated into the base groups. This observation asks for a bound on how many such elements there are. Such bounds can be derived using the theory of amenable graphs: In this work we examine Schreier graphs of amalgamated products and HNN extensions. For an amalgamated product $G = H *_A K $ with $[H:A] \geq [K:A] \geq 2$, the Schreier graph with respect to $H$ or $K$ turns out to be non-amenable if and only if $[H:A] \geq 3$. Moreove…
A group $G$ is called $W^*$-superrigid (resp. $C^*$-superrigid) if it is completely recognizable from its von Neumann algebra $L(G)$ (resp. reduced $C^*$-algebra $C_r^*(G)$). Developing new technical aspects in Popa's deformation/rigidity theory we introduce several new classes of $W^*$-superrigid groups which appear as direct products, semidirect products with non-amenable core and iterations of amalgamated free products and HNN-extensions. As a byproduct we obtain new rigidity results in $C^*$-algebra theory including additional examples of $C^*$-superrigid groups and explicit computations o…
We prove the following theorem: Let $π$ be the fundamental group of a finite graph of groups with finitely generated vertex groups $G_v$ having asdim $G_v\le n$ for all vertices $v$. Then asdim$π\le n+1$. This gives the best possible estimate for the asymptotic dimension of an HNN extension and the amalgamated product.
We give a geometric proof of a well known theorem that describes splittings of a free group as an amalgamated product or HNN extension over the integers. The argument generalizes to give a similar description of splittings of a virtually free group over a virtually cyclic group.
We define Euler characteristics on classes of residually finite and virtually torsion free groups and we show that they satisfy certain formulas in the case of amalgamated free products and HNN extensions over finite subgroups. These forumlas are obtained from a general result which applies to the rank gradient and the first $L^2$-Betti number of a finitely generated group.
In this article we construct asynchronous and sometimes synchronous automatic structures for amalgamated products and HNN extensions of groups that are strongly asynchronously (or synchronously) coset automatic with respect to the associated automatic subgroups, subject to further geometric conditions. These results are proved in the general context of fundamental groups of graphs of groups. The hypotheses of our closure results are satisfied in a variety of examples such as Artin groups of sufficiently large type, Coxeter groups, virtually abelian groups, and groups that are hyperbolic relati…
We introduce a geometric invariant, called finite decomposition complexity (FDC), to study topological rigidity of manifolds. We prove for instance that if the fundamental group of a compact aspherical manifold M has FDC, and if N is homotopy equivalent to M, then M x R^n is homeomorphic to N x R^n, for n large enough. This statement is known as the stable Borel conjecture. On the other hand, we show that the class of FDC groups includes all countable subgroups of GL(n,K), for any field K, all elementary amenable groups, and is closed under taking subgroups, extensions, free amalgamated produc…
We show that any free product of two countable groups, one of them being infinite, admits a faithful and homogeneous action on the Random Graph. We also show that a large class of HNN extensions or free products, amalgamated over a finite group, admit such an action and we extend our results to groups acting on trees. Finally, we show the ubiquity of finitely generated free dense subgroups of the automorphism group of the Random Graph whose action on it have all orbits infinite.
We study under which condition an amalgamated free product or an HNN-extension over a finite subgroup admits an amenable, transitive and faithful action on an infinite countable set. We show that such an action exists if the initial groups admit an amenable and almost free action with infinite orbits (e.g. virtually free groups or infinite amenable groups). Our result relies on the Baire category Theorem. We extend the result to groups acting on trees.
A JSJ-splitting of a group $G$ over a certain class of subgroups is a graph of groups decomposition of $G$ which describes all possible decompositions of $G$ as an amalgamated product or an HNN extension over subgroups lying in the given class. Such decompositions originated in 3-manifold topology. In this paper we generalize the JSJ-splitting constructions of Sela, Rips-Sela and Dunwoody-Sageev and we construct a JSJ-splitting for any finitely presented group with respect to the class of all slender subgroups along which the group splits. Our approach relies on Haefliger's theory of group act…
We prove that every {finitely generated residually finite}-by-sofic group satisfies Kaplansky's direct and stable finiteness conjectures with respect to all noetherian rings. We use this result to provide countably many new examples of finitely presented non-LEA groups, for which soficity is still undecided, satisfying these two conjectures. Deligne's famous example of a non residually finite group is among our examples, along with the families of amalgamated free products SL_n(Z[1/p])*_{F_r}SL_n(Z[1/p]) and HNN extensions SL_n(Z[1/p])*_{F_r}, where p>2 is a prime, n>2 and F_r is a free group …
We provide new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic groups arising from actions on simplicial trees. In particular, we consider amalgamated products and HNN-extensions, 1-relator groups, automorphism groups of polynomial algebras, 3-manifold groups and graph products. Acylindrical hyperbolicity is then used to obtain some results about the algebraic structure, analytic properties and measure equivalence rigidity of groups from these classes.
Let G be a finitely generated infinite pro-p group acting on a pro-p tree such that the restriction of the action to some open subgroup is free. Then we prove that G splits as a pro-p amalgamated product or as a pro-p HNN-extension over an edge stabilizer. Using this result we prove under certain conditions that free pro-p products with procyclic amalgamation inherit from its free factors the property of each 2-generated subgroup being free pro-p. This generalizes known pro-p results, as well as some pro-p analogs of classical results in abstract combinatorial group theory.
We study ascending HNN-extensions $G$ of finitely generated free abelian groups: examples of such $G$ include soluble Baumslag-Solitar groups and fundamental groups of orientable prime $3$-manifolds modelled on Sol geometry. In particular, we study the elliptic subgroup $A \leq G$, consisting of all elements that stabilise a point in the Bass-Serre tree of $G$. We consider the density of $A$ with respect to ball counting measures corresponding to finite generating sets of $G$, and we show that $A$ is exponentially negligible in $G$ with respect to such sequences of measures. As a consequence, …
We use language theory to study the rational subset problem for groups and monoids. We show that the decidability of this problem is preserved under graph of groups constructions with finite edge groups. In particular, it passes through free products amalgamated over finite subgroups and HNN extensions with finite associated subgroups. We provide a simple proof of a result of Grunschlag showing that the decidability of this problem is a virtual property. We prove further that the problem is decidable for a direct product of a group G with a monoid M if and only if membership is uniformly decid…
We show that a group acting on a non-trivial tree with finite edge stabilizers and icc vertex stabilizers admits a faithful and highly transitive action on an infinite countable set. This result is actually true for infinite vertex stabilizers and some more general, finite of infinite, edge stabilizers that we call highly core-free. We study the notion of highly core-free subgroups and give some examples. In the case of amalgamated free products over highly core-free subgroups and HNN extensions with highly core-free base groups we obtain a genericity result for faithful and highly transitive …
A group $G$ is said to be a {\it CSA}-group if all maximal abelian subgroups of $G$ are malnormal. The class of CSA groups is of interest because it contains torsion-free hyperbolic groups, groups acting freely on $Λ$-trees and groups with the same existential theory as free groups. CSA groups are also very closely related to the study of residually free groups and tensor completions. In this paper we investigate which free constructions (amalgamated products and HNN extensions) over CSA groups are again CSA. The results are applied, in particular, to show that a torsion-free one-relator group…
We give an example of a subgroup of SL(2,C) which is a strictly ascending HNN extension of a non-abelian finitely generated free group F. In particular, we exhibit a free group F in SL(2,C) of rank 6 which is conjugate to a proper subgroup of itself. This answers positively a question of Drutu and Sapir. The main ingredient in our construction is a specific finite volume (noncompact) hyperbolic 3-manifold M which is a surface bundle over the circle. In particular, most of F comes from the fundamental group of a surface fiber. A key feature of M is that there is an element of its fundamental gr…
We prove that if a surface group embeds as a normal subgroup in a Kähler group and the conjugation action of the Kähler group on the surface group preserves the conjugacy class of a non-trivial element, then the Kähler group is virtually given by a direct product, where one factor is a surface group. Moreover we prove that if a one-ended hyperbolic group with infinite outer automorphism group embeds as a normal subgroup in a Kähler group then it is virtually a surface group. More generally we give restrictions on normal subgroups of Kähler groups which are amalgamated products or HNN extension…
We prove that a finitely generated pro-$p$ group $G$ acting on a pro-$p$ tree $T$ splits as a free amalgamated pro-$p$ product or a pro-$p$ HNN-extension over an edge stabilizer. If $G$ acts with finitely many vertex stabilizers up to conjugation we show that it is the fundamental pro-$p$ group of a finite graph of pro-$p$ groups $(\cal G, Γ)$ with edge and vertex groups being stabilizers of certain vertices and edges of $T$ respectively. If edge stabilizers are procyclic, we give a bound on $Γ$ in terms of the minimal number of generators of $G$. We also give a criterion for a pro-$p$ group $…
We here consider inner amenability from a geometric and group theoretical perspective. We prove that for every non-elementary action of a group $G$ on a finite dimensional irreducible CAT(0) cube complex, there is a nonempty $G$-invariant closed convex subset such that every conjugation invariant mean on $G$ gives full measure to the stabilizer of each point of this subset. Specializing our result to trees leads to a complete characterization of inner amenability for HNN-extensions and amalgamated free products. One novelty of the proof is that it makes use of the existence of certain idempote…
We investigate Friedl-Lück's universal $L^2$-torsion for descending HNN extensions of finitely generated free groups, and so in particular for $F_n$-by-$\mathbb{Z}$ groups. This invariant induces a semi-norm on the first cohomology of the group which is an analogue of the Thurston norm for $3$-manifold groups. We prove that this Thurston semi-norm is an upper bound for the Alexander semi-norm defined by McMullen, as well as for the higher Alexander semi-norms defined by Harvey. The same inequalities are known to hold for $3$-manifold groups. We also prove that the Newton polytopes of the unive…
We study Nielsen equivalence classes of generating pairs of Kleinian groups and HNN-extensions. We establish the following facts: - Hyperbolic 2-bridge knot groups have infinitely many Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - For any natural number N there is a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold whose fundamental group has N distinct Nielsen classes of generating pairs. - Two pairs of elements of a fundamental group of an HNN-extension are Nielsen equivalent iff they are so for the obvious reasons.
We show that a group presented by a labelled oriented tree presentation in which the tree has diameter at most three is an HNN extension of a finitely presented group. From results of Silver, it then follows that the corresponding higher dimensional ribbon knots admit minimal Seifert manifolds.
In this paper we derive necessary and sufficient homological and cohomological conditions for profinite groups and modules to be of type $\operatorname{FP}_n$ over a profinite ring $R$, analogous to the Bieri-Eckmann criteria for abstract groups. We use these to prove that the class of groups of type $\operatorname{FP}_n$ is closed under extensions, quotients by subgroups of type $\operatorname{FP}_n$, proper amalgamated free products and proper $\operatorname{HNN}$-extensions, for each $n$. We show, as a consequence of this, that elementary amenable profinite groups of finite rank are of type…
We determine which amalgamated products of surface groups identified over multiples of simple closed curves are not fundamental groups of 3-manifolds. We prove each surface amalgam considered is virtually the fundamental group of a 3-manifold. We prove that each such surface group amalgam is abstractly commensurable to a right-angled Coxeter group from a related family. In an appendix, we determine the quasi-isometry classes among these surface amalgams and their related right-angled Coxeter groups.
If G is a semidirect product N by H with N normal and finitely generated then G has the property that every finite group is a quotient of some finite index subgroup of G if and only if one of N and H has this property. This has applications to 3-manifolds and to cyclically presented groups, for instance for any fibred hyperbolic 3-manifold M and any finite simple group S, there is a cyclic cover of M whose fundamental group surjects to S. We also give a short proof of the residual finiteness of ascending HNN extensions of finite rank free groups when the induced map on homology is injective.
Given a Kaehler group $G$ and a primitive class $ϕ\in H^1(G;Z)$, we show that the rank gradient of $(G;ϕ)$ is zero if and only if Ker $ϕ$ is finitely generated. Using this approach, we give a quick proof of the fact (originally due to Napier and Ramachandran) that Kaehler groups are not properly ascending or descending HNN extensions. Further investigation of the properties of Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariants of Kaehler groups allows us to show that a large class of groups of orientation-preserving PL homeomorphisms of an interval, which generalize Thompson's group $F$, are not Kaehler.
Given a class of groups C, a group G is strongly accessible over C if there is a bound on the number of terms in a sequence L(1), L(2), ..., L(n) of graph of groups decompositions of G with edge groups in C such that L(1) is the trivial decomposition (with 1-vertex) and for i>1, L(i) is obtained from L(i-1) by non-trivially and compatibly splitting a vertex group of L(i-1) over a group in C, replacing this vertex group by the splitting and then reducing. If H and K are subgroups of a group G then H is smaller than K if H intersect K has finite index in H and infinite index in K. The minimal sp…
