We study an extra flavor in the cascading SU((k+1)M)xSU(k M) gauge theory by adding probe D7-brane to the geometry. By finding a solution to the kappa-symmetry equation we establish that the D7-brane is mutually supersymmetric with the background everywhere on the baryonic branch of moduli space. We also discuss possible applications of this result.
We discuss consistent truncations of type IIB supergravity on resolved warped deformed conifolds with fluxes. These actions represent the gravitational duals to the baryonic branch deformation of the Klebanov-Strassler cascading gauge theory. As an application, we demonstrate that the baryonic branch is lifted in cascading gauge theory plasma.
Placing D3 or anti-D3-branes at the tip of the Klebanov-Strassler background results in uplifting the baryonic branch of the moduli space of the dual field theory. In this paper we derive a mass formula for the scalar particle associated with the motion along the baryonic branch, from both open and closed string points of view. We show that both methods give the same mass at linear order in number of (anti)D3-branes, thus providing a comprehensive check for the recently found linearized supergravity solution describing backreacting anti-D3-branes at the tip.
We investigate the brane exchange in the framework of N=2 MQCD by using a specific family of M fivebrane configurations relevant to describe the baryonic branch root. An exchange of M fivebranes is realized in the Taub-NUT geometry and controlled by the moduli parameter of the configurations. This family also provides two different descriptions of the root. These descriptions are examined carefully using the Taub-NUT geometry. It is shown that they have the same baryonic branch and are shifted each other by the brane exchange.
It has recently been suggested that a superpotential for the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler field theory (KS) should exist for a sector of the dual supergravity fields. In this note we would like to argue that if extended to cover the whole set of supergravity fields a would-be superpotential does not have a perturbative expansion around the known KS superpotential. Since the family of supergravity duals to the baryonic branch is an expansion around the warped deformed conifold, our argument most likely indicates that there is no such superpotential, and hints that some one-paramete…
We study a non-supersymmetric deformation of the field theory dual to the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. Using a combination of analytical (series expansions) and numerical methods we construct non-supersymmetric backgrounds that smoothly interpolate between the desired UV and IR behaviors. We calculate various observables of the field theory and propose a picture of soft breaking by gaugino masses that is consistent with the various calculations on the string side.
We study the two-dimensional space of supergravity solutions corresponding to non-supersymmetric deformations of the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. By combining analytical methods with a numerical survey of the parameter space, we find that this solution space includes as limits the softly-broken N=1 solutions of Gubser et al. and those of Dymarsky and Kuperstein. We also identify a one-dimensional family of solutions corresponding to a natural non-supersymmetric generalisation of Klebanov-Strassler, and one corresponding to the limit in which supersymmetry is completely absent, even i…
In this paper we construct and examine new supersymmetric solutions of massive IIA supergravity that are obtained using non-Abelian T-duality applied to the Baryonic Branch of the Klebanov-Strassler background. The geometries display SU(2) structure which we show flows from static in the UV to dynamical in the IR. Confinement and symmetry breaking are given a geometrical interpretation by this change of structure. Various field theory observables are studied, suggesting possible ways to break conformality and flow in $N=1$ $T_N$ and related field theories.
We study a gravity solution corresponding to fivebranes wrapped on the $S^2$ of the resolved conifold. By changing a parameter the solution continuously interpolates between the deformed conifold with flux and the resolved conifold with branes. Therefore, it displays a geometric transition, purely in the supergravity context. The solution is a simple example of torsional geometry and may be thought of as a non-Kähler analog of the conifold. By U-duality transformations we can add D3 brane charge and recover the solution in the form originally derived by Butti et al. This describes the baryonic…
We study different aspects of a U-duality recently presented by Maldacena and Martelli and apply it to non-extremal backgrounds. In particular, starting from new non-extremal wrapped D5 branes we generate new non-extremal generalizations of the Baryonic Branch of the Klebanov-Strassler solution. We also elaborate on different conceptual aspects of these U-dualities, like its action on (extremal and non-extremal) Dp branes, dual models for Yang-Mills-like theories, generic asymptotics and decoupling limit of the generated solutions.
We study the gravity duals of symmetry-breaking deformations of superconformal field theories, AdS/CFT dual to Type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x Y where Y is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold. In these vacua both conformal invariance and baryonic symmetries are spontaneously broken. We present a detailed discussion of the supergravity moduli space, which involves flat form fields on asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau manifolds, and match this to the gauge theory vacuum moduli space. We discuss certain linearised fluctuations of the moduli, identifying the Goldstone bosons associated with spontaneous b…
Higgs branch of N=2 SQCD is studied from the M theory viewpoint. With a differential geometrical proof of the s-rule besides an investigation on the global symmetry of M theory brane configurations, an exact description of the baryonic and non-baryonic branches in terms of M theory is presented. The baryonic branch root is also studied. The ``electric'' and ``magnetic'' descriptions of the root are shown to be related with each other by the brane exchange in M theory.
We exhibit a one-parameter family of regular supersymmetric solutions of type IIB theory that interpolates between Klebanov-Strassler (KS) and Maldacena-Nunez (MN). The solution is obtained by applying the supersymmetry conditions for SU(3)-structure manifolds to an interpolating ansatz proposed by Papadopoulos and Tseytlin. Other than at the KS point, the family does not have a conformally-Ricci-flat metric, neither it has self-dual three-form flux. Nevertheless, the asymptotic IR and UV are that of KS troughout the family, except for the extremal value of the interpolating parameter where th…
We construct explicitly a new class of backgrounds in type-IIB supergravity which generalize the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. We apply a solution-generating technique that, starting from a large class of solutions of the wrapped-D5 system, yields the new solutions, and then proceed to study in detail their properties, both in the IR and in the UV. We propose a simple intuitive field theory interpretation of the rotation procedure and of the meaning of our new solutions within the Papadopoulos-Tseytlin ansatz, in particular in relation to the duality cascade in the Klebanov-Strassler …
In the appropriate limit, a type IIB string theory setup involving D3 branes, wrapped D5 branes, and fluxes on a conifold generally leads to a supergravity background involving a warped version of the conifold with fluxes. We study the supergravity dual of the baryonic branch of the Klebanov Strassler theory by writing down a very general conifold metric--the non-Kähler resolved warped-deformed conifold--and a general set of fluxes that satisfy the supergravity equations of motion, and derive the necessary constraints that allow the geometry to be dual to an $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gaug…
We analyse the classical moduli spaces of supersymmetric vacua of 3d N=2 Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories. We show quite generally that the moduli space of the 3d theory always contains a baryonic branch of a parent 4d N=1 quiver gauge theory, where the 4d baryonic branch is determined by the vector of 3d Chern-Simons levels. In particular, starting with a 4d quiver theory dual to a 3-fold singularity, for certain general choices of Chern-Simons levels this branch of the moduli space of the corresponding 3d theory is a 4-fold singularity. Our results lead to a simple general method, using ex…
We show how it is possible to use the plethystic program in order to compute baryonic generating functions that count BPS operators in the chiral ring of quiver gauge theories living on the world volume of D branes probing a non compact CY manifold. Special attention is given to the conifold theory and the orbifold C^2/Z_2 times C, where exact expressions for generating functions are given in detail. This paper solves a long standing problem for the combinatorics of quiver gauge theories with baryonic moduli spaces. It opens the way to a statistical analysis of quiver theories on baryonic bran…
Gravity duals for a class of UV complete minimally supersymmetric non-conformal gauge theories require deformed conifolds with fluxes. However these manifolds do not allow for the standard Kahler or conformally Kahler metrics on them, instead the metrics are fully non-Kahler. We take a generic such configuration of a non-Kahler deformed conifold with fluxes and ask what constraints do supersymmetry impose in the Baryonic branch. We study the supersymmetry conditions and show that for the correct choices of the vielbeins and the complex structure all the equations may be consistently solved. Th…
We study Hasse diagrams of moduli spaces of $\mathrm{3d}$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories. The goal of this work is twofold: 1) We introduce the notion of inverting a Hasse diagram and conjecture that the Coulomb branch and Higgs branch Hasse diagrams of certain theories are related through this operation. 2) We introduce a Hasse diagram to map out the entire moduli space of the theory, including the Coulomb, Higgs and mixed branches. For theories whose Higgs and Coulomb branch Hasse diagrams are related by inversion it is straight forward to generate the Hasse diagram of the entire modu…
We consider the worldvolume theory of N D3-branes transverse to various non-compact Calabi-Yau spaces, and describe subtleties in the counting of chiral primary operators in such theories due to the presence of multiple branches of moduli space. Extra branches, beyond those directly related to the transverse geometry, result in additional terms in the generating functions for single- and multi-trace operators. Ideals in the N=1 chiral ring correspond to various branches and, in the large N limit, the operator counting reveals a product of Fock spaces, including the Fock space of bosons on the …
The moduli space of instantons on C^2 for any simple gauge group is studied using the Coulomb branch of N=4 gauge theories in three dimensions. For a given simple group G, the Hilbert series of such an instanton moduli space is computed from the Coulomb branch of the quiver given by the over-extended Dynkin diagram of G. The computation includes the cases of non-simply-laced gauge groups G, complementing the ADHM constructions which are not available for exceptional gauge groups. Even though the Lagrangian description for non-simply laced Dynkin diagrams is not currently known, the prescriptio…
We propose a "chiral" version of the Kutasov-Schwimmer duality in a 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory with $F$ fundamental matters, $\bar{F}$ anti-fundamental matters and an adjoint matter $X$ with a tree-level superpotential $W= \mathrm{tr} \, X^{k+1}$. The theory exhibits a rich structure of the baryonic and (dressed) Coulomb branch operators. At first sight, the duality seems bad due to the mismatch of the anti-baryonic branch in the moduli space of vacua. The duality well works by realizing that the anti-baryonic operators are identified with some of the dressed Coulomb branch coordi…
Within gauge/gravity duality, we compute the scalar and tensor mass spectrum in the boundary theory defined by the five-dimensional sigma-model coupled to gravity obtained by constraining to eight scalars the truncation on T$^{1,1}$ that corresponds to the Papadopoulos-Tseytlin (PT) ansatz. We study fluctuations around the 1-parameter family of backgrounds that lift to the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler (KS) system, and interpolates between the KS background and the Maldacena-Nunez one (CVMN). We adopt a gauge invariant formalism in the treatment of the fluctuations that we interpre…
In recent series of works, by translating properties of multi-centered supersymmetric black holes into the language of quiver representations, we proposed a formula that expresses the Hodge numbers of the moduli space of semi-stable representations of quivers with generic superpotential in terms of a set of invariants associated to `single-centered' or `pure-Higgs' states. The distinguishing feature of these invariants is that they are independent of the choice of stability condition. Furthermore they are uniquely determined by the $χ_y$-genus of the moduli space. Here, we provide a self-conta…
We develop a systematic method to describe the moduli space of vacua of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ class ${\cal S}$ theories including Coulomb branch, Higgs branch and mixed branches. In particular, we determine the Higgs and mixed branch roots, and the dimensions of the Coulomb and Higgs components of mixed branches. They are derived by using generalized Hitchin's equations obtained from twisted compactification of 5d maximal Super-Yang-Mills, with local degrees of freedom at punctures given by (nilpotent) orbits. The crucial thing is the holomorphic factorization of the Seiberg-Witten …
BPS vortex systems on closed Riemann surfaces with arbitrary genus are embedded into two-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with matters. We turn on a background R-gauge fields to keep half of rigid supersymmetry (topological A-twist) on the curved space. We consider two complementary descriptions; Higgs and Coulomb branches. The path integral reduces to the zero mode integral by the localization in the Higgs branch. The integral over the bosonic zero modes directly gives an integral over the volume form of the moduli space, whereas the fermionic zero modes are compensated by an appr…
We study the moduli space of the boundary conformal field theories describing an unstable D-brane of type II string theory compactified on a circle of critical radius. This moduli space has two branches, -- a three dimensional branch S^3/Z_2 and a two dimensional branch described by a square torus T^2. These two branches are joined along a circle. We compare this with the moduli space of classical solutions of tachyon effective field theory compactified on a circle of critical radius. This moduli space has a very similar structure to that of the boundary conformal field theory with the only di…
We construct the dual supergravity description of strongly coupled, large $N$, eight-supercharge gauge theories with fundamental hypermultiplets at points on the mixed Coulomb-Higgs branch. With certain assumptions about unknown couplings of D-branes to supergravity, this construction gives the correct metric on the hypermultiplet (Higgs-branch) component the moduli space, which decouples from the vector multiplet (Coulomb-branch) moduli. Going beyond the geodesic approximation, we find that the dynamics of a hypermultiplet VEV rolling towards a singularity on the Higgs component of the moduli…
We provide new evidence for the gauge/string duality between the baryonic branch of the cascading SU(k(M+1)) \times SU(kM) gauge theory and a family of type IIB flux backgrounds based on warped products of the deformed conifold and R^{3,1}. We show that a Euclidean D5-brane wrapping all six deformed conifold directions can be used to measure the baryon expectation values, and present arguments based on kappa-symmetry and the equations of motion that identify the gauge bundles required to ensure worldvolume supersymmetry of this object. Furthermore, we investigate its coupling to the pseudoscal…
The worldvolume theory of D3-branes probing four D7-branes and an O7-plane on $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ is given by a supersymmetric USp x USp gauge theory. We demonstrate that, at least for a particular choice of the holonomy at infinity, we can go to a dual description of the gauge theory, where we can add a Fayet-Iliopoulos term describing the blowing-up of the orbifold to the smooth ALE space. This allows us to express the moduli space of SO(8) instantons on the smooth ALE space as a hyperkähler quotient of a flat space times the Higgs branch of a class S theory. We also discuss a genera…
We approach the topic of Classical group nilpotent orbits from the perspective of their moduli spaces, described in terms of Hilbert series and generating functions. We review the established Higgs and Coulomb branch quiver theory constructions for A series nilpotent orbits. We present systematic constructions for BCD series nilpotent orbits on the Higgs branches of quiver theories defined by canonical partitions; this paper collects earlier work into a systematic framework, filling in gaps and providing a complete treatment. We find new Coulomb branch constructions for above minimal nilpotent…
We study D2-branes on the K3-fibration P^4_(11222)[8] using matrix factorizations at the Landau-Ginzburg point and analyze their moduli space and superpotentials in detail. We find that the open string moduli space consists of various intersecting branches of different dimensions. Families of D2-branes wrapping rational curves of degree one intersect with bound state branches. The influence of non-toric complex structure deformations is investigated in the Landau-Ginzburg framework, where these deformations arise as bulk moduli from the twisted sectors.
We explore maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with walls of impurities respecting half of the supersymmetries. The walls carry fundamental or bifundamental matter multiplets. We employ three-dimensional N=2 superspace language to identify the Higgs branch of this theory. We find that the vacuum conditions determining the Higgs branch are exactly the bow equations yielding Yang-Mills instantons on a multi-Taub-NUT space. Under electric-magnetic duality, the super Yang-Mills theory describing the bulk is mapped to itself, while the fundamental- and bifundamental-carrying impurity walls a…
We study Coulomb branch moduli spaces of a class of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories whose quiver satisfies the balance condition. The Coulomb branch is described by dressed monopole operators which can be counted using the Monopole formula. We mainly focus on A-type quivers in this paper, using Hilbert Series to study their moduli spaces, and present the interesting pattern which emerges. All of these balanced A-type quiver gauge theories can be realized on brane intervals in Type IIB string theory, where mirror symmetry acts by exchanging the five branes and induces an equiva…
The moduli space of instantons on an ALE space is studied using the moduli space of $\mathcal{N}=4$ field theories in three dimensions. For instantons in a simple gauge group $G$ on $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_n$, the Hilbert series of such an instanton moduli space is computed from the Coulomb branch of the quiver given by the affine Dynkin diagram of $G$ with flavour nodes of unitary groups attached to various nodes of the Dynkin diagram. We provide a simple prescription to determine the ranks and the positions of these flavour nodes from the order of the orbifold $n$ and from the residual subg…
We investigate different toric phases of 2+1 dimensional quiver gauge theories arising from M2-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4 folds. A brane tiling for each toric phase is presented. We apply the 'forward algorithm' to obtain the toric data of the mesonic moduli space of vacua and exhibit the equivalence between the vacua of different toric phases of a given singularity. The structures of the Master space, the mesonic moduli space, and the baryonic moduli space are examined in detail. We compute the Hilbert series and use them to verify the toric dualities between different phases. The Hilb…
This paper addresses a long standing problem - to identify the chiral ring and moduli space (i.e. as an algebraic variety) on the Coulomb branch of an N = 4 superconformal field theory in 2+1 dimensions. Previous techniques involved a computation of the metric on the moduli space and/or mirror symmetry. These methods are limited to sufficiently small moduli spaces, with enough symmetry, or to Higgs branches of sufficiently small gauge theories. We introduce a simple formula for the Hilbert series of the Coulomb branch, which applies to any good or ugly three-dimensional N = 4 gauge theory. The…
We study exact effective superpotentials of four-dimensional {\cal N} = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories with gauge group U(N) and various amounts of fundamental matter on R^3 x S^1, broken to {\cal N} = 1 by turning on a classical superpotential for the adjoint scalar. On general grounds these superpotentials can easily be constructed once we identify a suitable set of coordinates on the moduli space of the gauge theory. These coordinates have been conjectured to be the phase space variables of the classical integrable system which underlies the {\cal N} = 2 gauge theory. For the gauge theory …
Boundary flow in the $c=1$ 2d CFT of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold of a free boson on a circle is considered. Adding a bulk marginal operator to the $c=1$ orbifold branch induces a boundary flow. We show that this flow is consistent for any bulk marginal operator and known initial given boundary condition. The supersymmetric $c=3/2$ case is also mentioned. The supersymmetric $c=3/2$ case is also mentioned. For the circle branch of the moduli space this has been shown in arXiv:hep-th/0609034v2. The ground state multiplicity ($g_b$) is calculated and it is shown that it does indeed decrease.
We employ the ADHM method to derive the moduli space of two instantons in U(1) gauge theory on a noncommutative space. We show by an explicit hyperKähler quotient construction that the relative metric of the moduli space of two instantons on $R^4$ is the Eguchi-Hanson metric and find a unique threshold bound state. For two instantons on $R^3\times S^1$, otherwise known as calorons, we give the asymptotic metric and conjecture a completion. We further discuss the relationship of caloron moduli spaces of A, D and E groups to the Coulomb branches of three dimensional gauge theory. In particular, …
It is emphasized that compactified little string theories have compact moduli spaces of vacua, which globally probe compact string geometry. Compactifying various little string theories on T^3 leads to 3d theories with exact, quantum Coulomb branch given by: an arbitrary T^4 of volume M_s^2, an arbitrary K3 of volume M_s^2, and moduli spaces of G=SU(N), SO(2N), or E_{6,7,8} instantons on an arbitrary T^4 or K3 of fixed volume. Compactifying instead on a T^2 leads to 4d theories with a compact Coulomb branch base which, when combined with the exact photon gauge coupling fiber, is a compact, ell…
We analyze the coulomb branch of the non-unitary Lorentzian three algebra theory that has been proposed as a possible candidate for describing the world volume theory of multiple M2-branes. In order that it describes the theory of multiple M2-branes in flat eleven dimensional space-time, the ghost fields must decouple and the physical theory must be independent of the eight coordinates of the moduli space representing the center of mass coordinates of the branes. We show that the structure of the Coulomb branch is consistent with this requirement. While the full moduli space has the structure …
We derive the four-dimensional low-energy effective field theory governing the moduli space of strongly coupled superconformal quiver gauge theories associated with D3-branes at Calabi-Yau conical singularities in the holographic regime of validity. We use the dual supergravity description provided by warped resolved conical geometries with mobile D3-branes. Information on the baryonic directions of the moduli space is also obtained by using wrapped Euclidean D3-branes. We illustrate our general results by discussing in detail their application to the Klebanov-Witten model.
We investigate (2+1)-dimensional quiver Chern-Simons theories that arise from the study of M2-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. These theories can be elegantly described using brane tilings. We present several theories that admit a tiling description and give details of these theories including the toric data of their mesonic moduli space and the structure of both their Master space and baryonic moduli space. Where different toric phases are known, we exhibit the equivalence between the vacua. We identify some of the mesonic moduli spaces as cones over smooth toric Fano 3-folds.
We determine the exact global structure of the moduli space of $N{=}2$ supersymmetric $SO(n)$ and $\USp(2n)$ gauge theories with matter hypermultiplets in the fundamental representations, using the non-renormalization theorem for the Higgs branches and the exact solutions for the Coulomb branches. By adding an $(N{=}2)$--breaking mass term for the adjoint chiral field and varying the mass, the $N{=}2$ theories can be made to flow to either an ``electric'' $N{=}1$ supersymmetric QCD or its $N{=}1$ dual ``magnetic'' version. We thus obtain a derivation of the $N{=}1$ dualities of Seiberg.
We study a new duality which pairs 4d N=1 supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. They are represented by brane tilings and are worldvolume theories of D3 branes at Calabi-Yau 3-fold singularities. The new duality identifies theories which have the same combined mesonic and baryonic moduli space, otherwise called the master space. We obtain the associated Hilbert series which encodes both the generators and defining relations of the moduli space. We illustrate our findings with a set of brane tilings that have reflexive toric diagrams.
We consider type II string compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with fluxes and D-branes, and analyse the F-term scalar potential that simultaneously involves closed and open string modes. In type IIA models with D6-branes such potential can be directly computed by integrating out Minkowski three-forms. The result shows a multi-branched structure along the space of lifted open string moduli, in which discrete shifts in special Lagrangian and Wilson line deformations are compensated by changes in the RR flux quanta. The same sort of discrete shift symmetries are present in the superpote…
We study the conformal field theory dual of the type IIA flux compactification model of DeWolfe, Giryavets, Kachru and Taylor, with all moduli stabilized. We find its central charge and properties of its operator spectrum. We concentrate on the moduli space of the conformal field theory, which we investigate through domain walls in the type IIA string theory. The moduli space turns out to consist of many different branches. We use Bezout's theorem and Bernstein's theorem to enumerate the different branches of the moduli space and estimate their dimension.
We construct extremal, spherically symmetric black hole solutions to 4D supergravity with charge assignments that preclude BPS-saturation. In particular, we determine the ground state energy as a function of charges and moduli. We find that the mass of the non-BPS black hole remains that of a marginal bound state of four basic constituents throughout the entire moduli space and that there is always a non-zero gap above the BPS bound.
Many methods exist for the construction of the Hilbert series describing the moduli spaces of instantons. We explore some of the underlying group theoretic relationships between these various constructions, including those based on the Coulomb branches and Higgs branches of SUSY quiver gauge theories, as well as those based on generating functions derivable from the Weyl Character Formula. We show how the character description of the reduced single instanton moduli space of any Classical or Exceptional group can be deconstructed faithfully in terms of characters or modified Hall-Littlewood pol…
In this paper we study the spectra of glueballs on the Klebanov-Strassler background and its extension to the baryonic branch. We numerically calculate the mass spectrum of glueballs from the spin 2 ``gravity'' multiplet, which contains the traceless part of the stress-energy tensor and the transverse part of the U(1) R-current. The mass spectra of the corresponding fluctuations in supergravity coincide due to supersymmetry, which is manifest in the effective five-dimensional theory through a Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics transformation. We show that the glueball spectra grow as m^2 ~ Un^2 …
We carry out a thorough analysis of the moduli space of the cascading gauge theory found on p D3-branes and M wrapped D5-branes at the tip of the conifold. We find various mesonic branches of the moduli space whose string duals involve the warped deformed conifold with different numbers of mobile D3-branes. The branes that are not mobile form a BPS bound state at threshold. In the special case where p is divisible by M there also exists a one-dimensional baryonic branch whose family of supergravity duals, the resolved warped deformed conifolds, was constructed recently. The warped deformed con…
We demonstrate the validity of the String Lamppost Principle-that all consistent theories of quantum gravity are in the String Landscape-for supersymmetric theories in $d>6$ using compactness and connectedness of the moduli space of small instantons, as well as the classification of the associated Coulomb branch.
We analyze the moduli spaces near N=4 supersymmetric AdS4 vacua of string theory by combining and comparing various approaches: (a) the known exact solutions of Type IIB string theory with localized 5-brane sourcees, (b) the holographically dual 3d quiver gauge theories; (c) gauged supergravity, and (d) the representations of the superconformal algebra Osp(4|4). Short multiplets containing the marginal N=2 deformations transform in the (2;0), (0;2) or (1;1) representations of the R-symmetry group SU(2)_H x SU(2)_C. The first two are classified by the chiral rings of the Higgs and Coulomb branc…
We study the global structure of the moduli space of BPS walls in the Higgs branch of supersymmetric theories with eight supercharges. We examine the structure in the neighborhood of a special Lagrangian submanifold M, and find that the dimension of the moduli space can be larger than that naively suggested by the index theorem, contrary to previous examples of BPS solitons. We investigate BPS wall solutions in an explicit example of M using Abelian gauge theory. Its Higgs branch turns out to contain several special Lagrangian submanifolds including M. We show that the total moduli space of BP…
We propose a new non-perturbative method to search for marginal deformations in level truncated open string field theory. Instead of studying the flatness of the effective potential for the marginal field (which is not expected to give a one-to-one parametrization of the BCFT moduli space), we identify a new non-universal branch of the tachyon potential which, from known analytic examples, is expected to parametrize the marginal flow in a much larger region of the BCFT moduli space. By a level 18 computation in Siegel gauge, we find an increasingly flat effective potential in the non-universal…
A large class of equivalence relations between the moduli spaces of instantons on ALE spaces and the Higgs branches of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories, are found by means of a certain kind of duality transformation between brane configurations in superstring theories. 4d, N=2 and 5d, N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with product gauge groups turn out to correspond to the ALE-instanton moduli of type II B and type II A superstring theories, respectively.
The full moduli space M of a class of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories is studied. For gauge theories living on a stack of D3-branes at Calabi-Yau singularities X, M is a combination of the mesonic and baryonic branches, the former being the symmetric product of X. In consonance with the mathematical literature, the single brane moduli space is called the master space F. Illustrating with a host of explicit examples, we exhibit many algebro-geometric properties of the master space such as when F is toric Calabi-Yau, behaviour of its Hilbert series, its irreducible components and its symmetrie…
We discuss in detail the problem of counting BPS gauge invariant operators in the chiral ring of quiver gauge theories living on D-branes probing generic toric CY singularities. The computation of generating functions that include counting of baryonic operators is based on a relation between the baryonic charges in field theory and the Kaehler moduli of the CY singularities. A study of the interplay between gauge theory and geometry shows that given geometrical sectors appear more than once in the field theory, leading to a notion of "multiplicities". We explain in detail how to decompose the …
