For an arbitrary ordinary second order differential equation a test is constructed that checks if this equation is equivalent to Painleve I, II or Painleve III with three zero parameters equations under the substitutions of variables. If it is true then in case the Painleve equations I and II an explicite change of variables is given that is written using the differential invariants of the equation.
In this paper some open problems for Painlevé equations are discussed. In particular the following open problems are described: (i) the Painlevé equivalence problem; (ii) notation for solutions of the Painlevé equations; (iii) numerical solution of Painlevé equations; and (iv) the classification of properties of Painlevé equations.
Second order ordinary differential equations that possesses the constant invariant are investigated. Four basic types of these equations were found. For every type the complete list of nonequivalent equations is issued. As the exampes the equivalence problem for the Painleve II equation, Painleve III equation with three zero parameters, Emden equations and for some other equations is solved.
We describe all finite orbits of an action of the extended modular group $\barΛ$ on conjugacy classes of SL(2,C)-triples. The result is used to classify all algebraic solutions of the general Painleve VI equation up to parameter equivalence.

We show that there exists a rational change of coordinates of Painlevé's P1 equation $y''=6y^2+x$ and of the elliptic equation $y''=6y^2$ after which these two equations become analytically equivalent in a region in the complex phase space where $y$ and $y'$ are unbounded. The region of equivalence comprises all singularities of solutions of P1 (i.e. outside the region of equivalence, solutions are analytic). The Painlevé property of P1 (that the only movable singularities are poles) follows as a corollary. Conversely, we argue that the Painlevé property is crucial in reducing P1, in a singula…
We show that the local equivalence problem for second-order ordinary differential equations under point transformations is completely characterized by differential invariants of order at most 10 and that this upper bound is sharp. We also show that, modulo Cartan duality and point transformations, the Painlevé-I equation can be characterized as the simplest second-order ODE belonging to the class of equations requiring 10th order jets for their classification.
We introduce a ultradiscretization with parity variables of the $q$-difference Painlevé VI system of equations. We show that ultradiscrete limit of Riccati-type solutions of $q$-Painlevé VI satisfies the ultradiscrete Painlevé VI system of equations with the parity variables, which is valid by using the parity variables. We study some solutions of the ultradiscrete Riccati-type equation and those of ultradiscrete Painlevé VI equation.
It is known that the Painleve VI is obtained by connection preserving deformation of some linear differential equations, and the Heun equation is obtained by a specialization of the linear differential equations. We inverstigate degenerations of the Ruijsenaars-van Diejen difference opearators and show difference analogues of the Painleve-Heun correspondence.
We classify all functions satisfying non-trivial families of PVI equations. It turns out that, up to an Okamoto equivalence, there are exactly four families parameterized by affine planes or lines. Each affine space is generated by points of "geometric origin", associated either to deformations of elliptic surfaces with four singular fibers, or to deformations of three-sheeted covers of the projective line with branching locus consisting of four points.
It is shown how to calculate asymptotics of integrals over the positive semi-axis of two functions related to the Degenerate Third Painlevé Equation (dP3). As an example, the corresponding results for the meromorphic solution of the dP3 vanishing at the origin are presented.
The paper concerns asymptotic studies for the sixth Painlevé transcendent as independent variable tends to infinity. The primary tool is averaging and the Whitham method. Elliptic ansatz, appropriate modulation equation and asymptotics for some partial solution to PVI are found.
These are the lecture notes for a course on exceptional polynomials taught at the \textit{AIMS-Volkswagen Stiftung Workshop on Introduction to Orthogonal Polynomials and Applications} that took place in Douala (Cameroon) from October 5-12, 2018. They summarize the basic results and construction of exceptional poynomials, developed over the past ten years. In addition, some new results are presented on the construction of rational solutions to Painlevé equation PIV and its higher order generalizations that belong to the $A_{2n}^{(1)}$-Painlevé hierarchy. The construction is based on dressing ch…
As a new application of the method of "uniform asymptotics" proposed by Bassom, Clarkson, Law and McLeod, we provide a simpler and more rigorous proof of the connection formulas of some special solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation, which have been established earlier by Andreev and Kitaev.
We prove the meromorphy of solutions for a wide class of ordinary differential equations. These equations are given by invariant manifolds of non-linear partial differential equations integrable by the inverse scattering method. Some higher analogues of the Painlev\' e equations are considered as examples.
The critical behavior of a three real parameter class of solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation is computed, and parametrized in terms of monodromy data of the associated $2\times 2$ matrix linear Fuchsian system of ODE. The class may contain solutions with poles accumulating at the critical point. The study of this class closes a gap in the description of the transcendents in one to one correspondence with the monodromy data. These transcendents are reviewed in the paper. Some formulas that relate the monodromy data to the critical behaviors of the four real (two complex) parameter class of…
Painleve transcendents are usually considered as complex functions of a complex variable, but in applications it is often the real cases that are of interest. Under a reasonable assumption (concerning the behavior of a dynamical system associated with Painleve IV, as discussed in a recent paper), we give a number of results towards a classification of the real solutions of Painleve IV (or, more precisely, symmetric Painleve IV), according to their asymptotic behavior and singularities. We show the existence of globally nonsingular real solutions of symmetric Painleve IV for arbitrary nonzero v…
We will explain how some new algebraic solutions of the sixth Painleve equation arise from complex reflection groups, thereby extending some results of Hitchin and Dubrovin-Mazzocco for real reflection groups. The problem of finding explicit formulae for these solutions will be addressed elsewhere.
We find a one-parameter family of polynomial Hamiltonian system in two variables with $W({A}^{(1)}_1)$-symmetry. We also show that this system can be obtained by the compatibility conditions for the linear differential equations in three variables. We give a relation between it and the second member of the second Painlevé hierarchy. Moreover, we give some relations between an autonomous version of its polynomial Hamiltonian system in two variables and the mKdV hierarchies.
This paper first discusses irreducibility of a Painlevé equation $P$. We explain how the Painlevé property is helpful for the computation of special classical and algebraic solutions. As in a paper of Morales-Ruiz we associate an autonomous Hamiltonian $\mathbb{H}$ to a Painlevé equation $P$. Complete integrability of $\mathbb{H}$ is shown to imply that all solutions to $P$ are classical (which includes algebraic), so in particular $P$ is solvable by ''quadratures''. Next, we show that the variational equation of $P$ at a given algebraic solution coincides with the normal variational equation …
The Liénard equation is used in various applications. Therefore, constructing general analytical solutions of this equation is an important problem. Here we study connections between the Liénard equation and some equations from the Painlevé--Gambier classification. We show that with the help of such connections one can construct general analytical solutions of the Liénard equation's subfamilies. In particular, we find three new integrable families of the Liénard equation. We also propose and discuss an approach for finding one--parameter families of closed--form analytical solutions of the Lié…
In this survey, we review asymptotic results of some orthogonal polynomials which are relate to the Painlevé transcendents. They are obtained by applying Deift-Zhou's nonlinear steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems. In the last part of this article, we list several open problems.
In this paper, we study the Painlevé VI equation with parameter $(\frac {9}{8},\frac{-1}{8},\frac{1}{8},\frac{3}{8})$. We prove (i) An explicit formula to count the number of poles of an algebraic solution with the monodromy group $D_{N}$, where $D_{N}$ is the dihedral group of order $2N$. (ii) There are only four solutions without poles in $\mathbb{C}\backslash \left \{ 0,1\right \} $. (iii) If the monodromy group of the associated linear ODE of a solution $λ\left( t\right) $ is unitary, then $λ( t) $ has no poles in $\mathbb{R}% \backslash \{ 0,1\} $.
Although the theory of discrete Painlevé (dP) equations is rather young, more and more examples of such equations appear in interesting and important applications. Thus, it is essential to be able to recognize these equations, to be able to identify their type, and to see where they belong in the classification scheme. The definite classification scheme for dP equations was proposed by H. Sakai, who used geometric ideas to identify 22 different classes of these equations. However, in a major contrast with the theory of ordinary differential Painlevé equations, there are infinitely many non-equ…
Algebraic solutions of the sixth Painleve equation can be computed using pullback transformations of hypergeometric equations with respect to specially ramified rational coverings. In particular, as was noticed by the second author and Doran, some algebraic solutions can be constructed from a rational covering alone, without computation of the pullbacked Fuchsian equation. But the same covering can be used to pullback different hypergeometric equations, resulting in different algebraic Painleve VI solutions. This paper presents computations of explicit RS-pullback transformations, and derivati…
We prove that there exists the unique odd meromorphic solution of dP3, $u(τ)$ such that $u(0)=0$, and study some of its properties, mainly: the coefficients of its Taylor expansion at the origin and asymptotic behaviour as $τ\to+\infty$.
In this article we consider a first-order completely integrable system of partial differential equations $\partial \Fi/partial x=A(x, t) \Fi, \partial \Fi/partial t=B(x, t) \Fi$ with $\Fi=(\fi_1, \fi_2)^τ$ where $A(x, t)$ and $B(x, t)$ are 2 by 2 holomorphic matrices functions. Under some assumptions we find a variable change by which the system $\partial \Fi/\partial x=A(x, t) \Fi$ is reduced to an equation independent on the variable $t$. As an application we show that the R. Fuchs's conjecture for the Painlevé equations is true for some algebraic solutions.
After recalling some of the geometry of the sixth Painleve equation, we will describe how the Okamoto symmetries arise naturally from symmetries of Schlesinger's equations and summarise the classification of the Platonic Painleve six solutions. A key observation is that Painleve VI governs the isomonodromic deformations of certain Fuchsian systems on rank \emph{three} bundles.
We announce some results which might bring a new insight into the classification of algebraic solutions to the sixth Painleve equation. The main results consist of the rationality of parameters, trigonometric Diophantine conditions, and what the author calls the Tetrahedral Theorem regarding the absence of algebraic solutions in certain situations. The method is based on fruitful interactions between the moduli theoretical formulation of Painleve VI and dynamics on character varieties via the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.
We study the hermitian one matrix model with semi-classical potential. This is a general unitary invariant random matrix ensemble in which the potential has a derivative that is a rational function and the measure is supported on some collection of disjoint closed intervals. Such models have attracted much interest both due to their physical applications and relations to integrable systems. An object of central interest in random matrix theory is the correlation kernel, as this encodes the eigenvalue correlation functions. In recent years many results have been obtained proving that the correl…
We present some observations on the asymptotic behaviour of the coefficients in the Laurent series expansion of solutions of the first Painleve equation. For the general solution, explicit recursive formulae for the Taylor expansion of the tau-function around a zero are given, which are natural extensions of analogous formulae for the elliptic sigma function, as given by Weierstrass. Numerical and exact results on the symmetric solution which is singular at the origin are also presented.
We present some observations on the tau-function for the fourth Painlevé equation. By considering a Hirota bilinear equation of order four for this tau-function, we describe the general form of the Taylor expansion around an arbitrary movable zero. The corresponding Taylor series for the tau-functions of the first and second Painlevé equations, as well as that for the Weierstrass sigma function, arise naturally as special cases, by setting certain parameters to zero.
We consider three special cases of the initial value problem of the first Painlevé equation (PI). Our approach is based on the method of uniform asymptotics introduced by Bassom, Clarkson, Law and McLeod. A rigorous proof of a property of the PI solutions on the negative real axis, recently revealed by Bender and Komijani, is given by approximating the Stokes multipliers. Moreover, we build more precise relation between the large initial data of the PI solutions and their three different types of behavior as the independent variable tends to negative infinity. In addition, some limiting form c…
A new class of isomonodromy equations will be introduced and shown to admit Kac-Moody Weyl group symmetries. This puts into a general context some results of Okamoto on the 4th, 5th and 6th Painleve equations, and shows where such Kac-Moody root systems occur "in nature". A key point is that one may go beyond the class of affine Kac-Moody root systems. As examples, by considering certain hyperbolic Kac-Moody Dynkin diagrams, we find there is a sequence of higher order Painleve systems lying over each of the classical Painleve equations. This leads to a conjecture about the Hilbert scheme of po…
This is basically the text of a survey talk (entitled 'Painleve, Klein and the icosahedron') given at Hitchin's 60th birthday conference. It discusses the search for and construction of algebraic solutions of the sixth Painleve differential equation, which may be viewed as a nonlinear analogue of the Gauss hypergeometric equation. Both algebraic and transcendental methods are used and the story involves affine Weyl groups, braid groups and cubic surfaces. Some emphasis is given to the interpretation of the sixth Painleve equation as the explicit form of the simplest nonabelian Gauss-Manin conn…
