We classify all cohomogeneity one manifolds with principal orbit Q^111=SU(2)^3/U(1)^2 or M^110=(SU(3) x SU(2))/(SU(2) x U(1)) whose holonomy is contained in Spin(7). Various metrics with different kinds of singular orbits can be constructed by our methods. It turns out that the holonomy of our metrics is automatically SU(4) and that they are asymptotically conical. Moreover, we investigate the smoothness of the metrics at the singular orbit.
We construct a continuous 1-parameter family of smooth complete Ricci-flat metrics of cohomogeneity one on vector bundles over $\mathbb{CP}^2$, $\mathbb{HP}^2$ and $\mathbb{OP}^2$ with respective principal orbits $G/K$ the Wallach spaces $SU(3)/T^2$, $Sp(3)/(Sp(1)Sp(1)Sp(1))$ and $F_4/\mathrm{spin}(8)$. Almost all the Ricci-flat metrics constructed have generic holonomy. The only exception is the complete $G_2$ metric discovered in [BS89][GPP90]. It lies in the interior of the 1-parameter family on $\bigwedge_-^2\mathbb{CP}^2$. All the Ricci-flat metrics constructed have asymptotically conical…
The aim of this paper is to prove that there exists no cohomogeneity one $G-$invariant proper biharmonic hypersurface into the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$, where $G$ denotes a tranformation group which acts on ${\mathbb R}^n$ by isometries, with codimension two principal orbits. This result may be considered in the context of the Chen conjecture, since this family of hypersurfaces includes examples with up to seven distinct principal curvatures. The paper uses the methods of equivariant differential geometry. In particular, the technique of proof provides a unified treatment for all these …
We study isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the (n+1)-dimensional Minkowski space up to orbit-equivalence. We give examples of isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Minkowski space whose orbit spaces are non-Hausdorff. We show that there exist isometric cohomogeneity one actions on the Minkowski space which are orbit-equivalent on the complement of an n-dimensional degenerate subspace and not orbit-equivalent on this degenerate subspace. We classify isometric cohomogeneity one actions on 2- and 3-dimensional Minkowski spaces up to orbit-equivalence.
We study nearly-Kahler 6-manifolds equipped with a cohomogeneity-two Lie group action for which the principal orbits are coisotropic. If the metric is complete, then we show that this last condition is automatically satisfied, and both the acting Lie group and the principal orbits are finite quotients of $S^3 \times S^1$. We partition the class of such nearly-Ka}hler structures into three types (called I, II, III) and prove a local existence and generality result for each type. Metrics of Types I and II are shown to be incomplete. We also derive a quasilinear elliptic PDE system on the 2-dimen…
In this article, we construct two continuous 1-parameter family of non-compact $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ metrics with both chiralities, with the principal orbit an Aloff--Wallach space $N_{k,l}$ and the singular orbit $\mathbb{CP}^2$. For generic $N_{k,l}$, metrics constructed are locally asymptotically conical (ALC). For $N_{1,1}$, we construct two continuous 1-parameter families with geometric transition from asymptotically conical (AC) metrics to ALC metrics.
The aim of this paper is to classify cohomogeneity one isometric actions on the 4-dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$, up to orbit equivalence. Representations, up to conjugacy, of the acting groups in $O(3,1)\ltimes \mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ are given in both cases, proper and non-proper actions. When the action is proper, the orbits and the orbit spaces are determined.
The aim of this paper is to study cohomogeneity one isometric linear actions on the $p+q$-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$. It is proved that the natural isometric action of the nilpotent factor of an Iwasawa decomposition of $SO(p,q)$ is not of cohomogeneity one. The orbits of cohomogeneity one actions of some subgroups of a maximal parabolic subgroup of the isometry group of $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$ are determined and it is proved that there exist cohomogeneity one isometric actions on $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$ which are orbit-equivalent on the complement of a $p$-dimensional degener…
The aim of this paper is to classify the cohomogeneity one conformal actions on the three-dimensional essential Riemannian spaces, up to orbit equivalence. Among other results, the representations of all connected Lie groups acting with cohomogeneity one or zero within the full conformal group of a given three-dimensional essential Riemannian space are determined, up to conjugacy, and the orbits are specified up to conformal equivalence.
In this paper we classify, up to orbit equivalence, cohomogeneity one actions of connected closed Lie subgroups of $U(1,n)$ on the $(2n+1)$-dimensional anti de Sitter spacetime $AdS^{2n+1}$. We also give some new examples of nonproper cohomogeneity one actions on $AdS^{n+1}$ and determine parabolic Lie subgroups of $SO(2,n)$ and their orbits in $AdS^{n+1}$
In this paper we give a classification of closed and connected Lie groups, up to conjugacy in $Iso({\bf adS_3})$, acting by cohomogeneity one on the three dimensional anti de sitter space ${\bf adS_3}$. Then we determine causal characters of the orbits and the orbit spaces, up to homeomorphism, in both cases, proper and nonproper actions. When the action is proper, we show that there is no exceptional orbit and causal characters of the principal orbits are the same.
The aim of this paper is to classify the cohomogeneity one conformal actions on the 3-dimensional Einstein universe $Ein^{1;2}$ , up to orbit equivalence. In a recent paper [21], we studied the unique (up to conjugacy) irreducible action of $PSL(2; \mathbb{R})$ on $Ein^{1;2}$ and we showed that the action is of cohomogeneity one. In the present paper, we determine all the subgroups of $Conf(Ein^{1;2})$, up to conjugacy, acting reducibly and with cohomogeneity one on $Ein^{1;2}$. We show that any cohomogeneity one reducible action on $Ein^{1;2}$ induces a fixed point in the 4-dimensional projec…
Let $M$ be a cohomogeneity one manifold of a compact semisimple Lie group $G$ with one singular orbit $S_0 = G/H$. Then $M$ is $G$- diffeomorphic to the total space $G \times_H V$ of the homogeneous vector bundle over $S_0$ defined by a sphere transitive representation of $G$ in a vector space $V$. We describe all such manifolds $M$ which admit an invariant Kahler structure of standard type. This means that the restriction $μ: S = Gx = G/L \rightarrow F = G/K$ of the moment map of $M$ to a regular orbit $S = G/L$ is a holomorphic map of $S$ with the induced CR structure onto a flag manifold $…
We investigate the geometry of Hermitian manifolds endowed with a compact Lie group action by holomorphic isometries with principal orbits of codimension one. In particular, we focus on a special class of these manifolds constructed by following Bérard-Bergery which includes, among the others, the holomorphic line bundles on $\mathbb C\mathbb P^{m-1}$, the linear Hopf manifolds and the Hirzebruch surfaces. We characterize their invariant special Hermitian metrics, such as balanced, Kähler-like, pluriclosed, locally conformally Kähler, Vaisman, Gauduchon. Furthermore, we construct new examples …
We study submanifolds whose principal curvatures, counted with multiplicities, do not depend on the normal direction. Such submanifolds, which we briefly call CPC submanifolds, are always austere, hence minimal, and have constant principal curvatures. Well-known classes of examples include totally geodesic submanifolds, homogeneous austere hypersurfaces, and singular orbits of cohomogeneity one actions. The main purpose of this article is to present a systematic approach to the construction and classification of homogeneous submanifolds whose principal curvatures are independent of the normal …
In this paper we give a classification of closed and connected Lie groups, up to conjugacy in $Iso({\mathbb{R}^3_1})$, acting by cohomogeneity one on the three dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^3_1$ in both cases, proper and nonproper actions. Then we determine causal characters of the orbits.
In this paper we discuss the smoothness conditions for metrics on a cohomogeneity one manifold, i.e. metrics invariant under a Lie group whose generic orbits are hypersurfaces. Along these hypersurfaces one describes the metrics in terms of a collection of functions defined along a geodesic normal to the hypersurfaces. In a neighborhood of a lower dimensional orbit the functions must satisfy certain smoothness conditions for the metric to extend smoothly. In general these can be quite complicated. We present a method that makes it straightforward to compute them, and illustrate it in several e…
F. Podestà and A. Spiro introduced a class of $G$-manifolds $M$ with a cohomogeneity one action of a compact semisimple Lie group $G$ which admit an invariant Kaehler structure $(g,J)$ (``standard $G$-manifolds") and studied invariant Kaehler and Kaehler-Einstein metrics on $M$. In the first part of this paper, we gave a combinatoric description of the standard non compact $G$-manifolds as the total space $M_φ$ of the homogeneous vector bundle $M = G\times_H V \to S_0 =G/H$ over a flag manifold $S_0$ and we gave necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an invariant Kaehler-Eins…
In this article, we construct non-compact complete Einstein metrics on two infinite series of manifolds. The first series of manifolds are vector bundles with $\mathbb{S}^{4m+3}$ as principal orbit and $\mathbb{HP}^{m}$ as singular orbit. The second series of manifolds are $\mathbb{R}^{4m+4}$ with the same principal orbit. For each case, a continuous 1-parameter family of complete Ricci-flat metrics and a continuous 2-parameter family of complete negative Einstein metrics are constructed. In particular, $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ metrics $\mathbb{A}_8$ and $\mathbb{B}_8$ discovered by Cvetič et al. in…
Six-dimensional nearly Kaehler manifolds of cohomogeneity one (II)
We conclude the classification of cohomogeneity one actions on symmetric spaces of rank one by classifying cohomogeneity one actions on quaternionic hyperbolic spaces up to orbit equivalence. As a by-product of our proof, we produce uncountably many examples of inhomogeneous isoparametric families of hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures in quaternionic hyperbolic spaces.
Coassociative submanifolds are 4-dimensional calibrated submanifolds in $G_{2}$-manifolds. In this paper, we construct explicit examples of coassociative submanifolds in $Λ^{2}_{-} S^{4}$, which is the complete $G_{2}$-manifold constructed by Bryant and Salamon. Classifying the Lie groups which have 3- or 4-dimensional orbits, we show that the only homogeneous coassociative submanifold is the zero section of $Λ^{2}_{-} S^{4}$ up to the automorphisms and construct many cohomogeneity one examples explicitly. In particular, we obtain examples of non-compact coassociative submanifolds with conical…
Let $M$ be a domain enclosed between two principal orbits on a cohomogeneity one manifold $M_1$. Suppose $T$ and $R$ are symmetric invariant (0,2)-tensor fields on $M$ and $\partial M$, respectively. The paper studies the prescribed Ricci curvature equation $\mathrm{Ric}(G)=T$ for a Riemannian metric $G$ on $M$ subject to the boundary condition $G_{\partial M}=R$ (the notation $G_{\partial M}$ here stands for the metric induced by $G$ on $\partial M$). Imposing a standard assumption on $M_1$, we describe a set of requirements on $T$ and $R$ that guarantee global and local solvability.
We consider compact manifolds $M$ with a cohomogeneity one action of a compact Lie group $G$ such that the orbit space $M/G$ is a closed interval. For $T$ a maximal torus of $G$, we find necessary and sufficient conditions on the group diagram of $M$ such that the $T$-action on $M$ is of GKM type, and describe its GKM graph. The general results are illustrated on explicit examples.
